nigerians are very lazy people and since they want quick money farming is not in their available alternatives.
wow, a nice broad brushstroke there...

some might even say lazy...

well i guess you just proved your own point...

Was the [pain of war] also part of the 'bible prophesy'?

Those people have suffered, undeservedly so.

I'm glad that the situation there is somewhat settled now.  And also, that people are using their initiative: making the best use of what they have; turning a negative instrument into a positive one.
Christianity EtcRe: why did the church (and christians) choose to ignore the issue of usury... by exu(op): 4:27pm On Nov 30, 2005
the word usury is sometimes used to describe the selling of money as a commodity...

but it usually means (or the dictionary definition) of the word is:

An excessive or illegally high rate of interest charged on borrowed money.

the old dictionary defniniton:

Interest charged or paid on a loan
Christianity Etcwhy did the church (and christians) choose to ignore the issue of usury... by exu(op): 3:49pm On Nov 30, 2005
and what the bible says about ithuh?

just curious?

usury (and subsequently poverty) causes more damage to mankind and society than a lot of the other so called "issues" that religious groups like to make a fuss about...

so, any thoughts?

when i said i didn't want endless biblical quotes i was trying to sway people away from what i usually see around here; picking a passage from the bible and then not explaining it in relation to the question.

if you scroll up you'll notice that aji was kind enough to explain his quranic verse.

thanks,

i'm sorry if some of you have got the wrong end of the stick.

thank you aji, for bringing the islamic point of view into this debate...

however:

Have not those who disbelieve known that the heavens and the earth were joined together as one united piece (/as one unit of creation), before We clove them asunder (/then We parted them)? We made from water every living thing, Will they not then believe?

also, what's this 'we' business; i thought there was only one God/Allah...

Trying to prove the existence of God using logic is an endless waste of effort. But looking at circumstances surrounding us, one can easily tell that there's truely a GOD.
contradict yourself muchhuh

using the evidence we see in the world was exactly what i was asking people to do...

this is one of my problems with religion, specifically christianity, the use of logic only when it suits said religion...

p.s.
We once had a prayer session in my church which was based on God showering the rains of blessings on us.
i bet this happened during the rainy season...some people  rolleyes

If you admit that you're overwhelmed and astonished by the awe of our existence, I'll say you make sense. Pinch your self... hard!... harder!.... Did you feel the pain? If the answer is yes, you're alive! That means EXISTENCE! That makes more sense
cute, and yet you still haven't answered any of the questions...
Christianity EtcRe: Why Does God Keep Silent? by exu(m): 7:43pm On Nov 16, 2005
certainly no one can be forced into religion but remember whatever u reap , u'll sow.
does that mean that i'll go to paradise/heaven for living the according to the most basic of human laws; that one should only do to others what they wish to be done unto them, but not accepting old myths as the truths...whilst a roman catholic priest who abused 100s of children, believed in, and advertised, the teachings of the church will go to hellhuh?
Christianity EtcRe: The Logic Behind the Idea of God by exu(op): 3:29pm On Nov 15, 2005
I believe in the possibility of the 'unseen'...

but anyone making claims to having the truth about our existence and failing to back up those claims with hard facts is senseless...

still no (attempted) answers...

i'd like to point out that bellview has suffered only one plane crash is 15 years...

plane crashes happen all the time, all over the world due to misfortune, or a slight miscalculation, not because of 'how nigeria is'....

other than that i agree with wesleyana's first comments/observations...
Christianity EtcRe: The Logic Behind the Idea of God by exu(op): 3:28pm On Nov 12, 2005
@ ka: seeing as the brain is as the centre of everything we do your claim that logic is not all important is untrue...

also, at some point every religious sect has claimed to have proof, which has more often than not been proved to be (at best) questionable and at worst manufactured...

only when the creditability of these said 'proofs' have been destroyed have people fallen back on the old claim that 'religion is a question of faith' and not perceived reality...

for those of you struggling to understand my line of thinking, all i'm attempting to establish is why it is that some people claim to believe things that appear to be nonsense to others...

why is that what you believe is almost entirely dependent on where you're fromhuh or where you're family is fromhuh your position in societyhuh??
(sorry to go off topic)

p.s.
if i said that i 'believe' that the being you refer to as 'satan' is the creator of the world, without backing up my claim...

claiming that is the truth and everything else is a lie...how would that influence your way of thinkinghuh??

p.p.s.
i find it interesting that not one person has even attempted to answer one of the questions...
Christianity EtcRe: The Logic Behind the Idea of God by exu(op): 1:59pm On Nov 11, 2005
who says i'm trying to upset people, i'm trying to understand what it is that makes people believe that there is a 'god' and only one 'god'....

logic/reasoning is behind everything we do: i've often seen people claim that they have proof that what they 'believe' is real; all i'm asking is that these people show their evidence...

why is it wrong to ask questions- how are people expected to learn/better themselves if they don't askhuh

p.s.
my agenda, as always, is to establish the truth...

Christianity EtcThe Logic Behind the Idea of God by exu(op): 11:22pm On Nov 10, 2005
ok, so i've decided to ask the people here why they believe that there is a 'god'; what is the logic behind the thinking that there is a supreme being...

and why is it that you feel so strongly that:

a) there is only ONE supreme being (or at least one above all others)

b) that this supreme being is all loving- what evidence can we see, on an everyday level, that this is truehuh

c) and all powerful- again what evidence is there in the world that this is truehuh

d) and perfect- how would you support this claimhuh

please remember this a question asking for logic (and not endless biblical quotes)...

i'm sure i'll enjoy reading your answers...

thanks for reading.

Christianity EtcDifference Between a Religion and a Cult by exu(op): 9:30pm On Nov 06, 2005
Just curious to see what you guys believe the difference between a religion and a cult to be.

I've seen a few threads with people complaining about the presence of cults within Nigeria. So I'm curious how these people (and the rest of you) define a 'cult'.

So, what is a cult and what makes them so bad whilst 'religions' are so inherently 'good'?
Christianity EtcRe: On the Apparent Correlation Between Religion and Social Ills by exu(op): 9:26pm On Nov 06, 2005
I think you guys have missed the point...

But to you, layi, in a religious country a vast number of the populace will have been 'indoctrinated' into a specific way of thinking, which will in turn manifest itself in everyday life and the laws of the land...

Take the ban on homosexuality in Nigeria for example...If anyone sought to have that law repealed the first thing people would say is that 'God' is against it because someone told them (via a book) that 'God' told them that men should have relations with women...

In a country where the people are less inclined to follow the advice of religious leaders, or use religious texts to support their unworldy/ignorant opinions the people would seek to ensure that all people are treated fairly and in the case of homosexuality the people would come to a 'logical' conclusion and allow them to live freely...

FamilyRe: What If I Don't Want Children? by exu(op): 8:16pm On Oct 12, 2005
Personally I don't care whether people have children or not, but the reasons given as to why they want children are often (if not always) selfish...

1. Because it's the 'done' thing (and you wouldn't want to look different!)

2. Because it cements the relationship (making it harder for either partner to leave the marriage, but placing pressure/importance on the child)

3. Because my parents want granchildren (laughable!)

There are host of other reasons that may come to me later...

But to summarise my feelings on child rearing:
Unless you sat down and decided that you wanted children 100% because it would benefit the rest of the world, with not a thought as to what you as a person desired, I do not think you can honestly claim that decision to be entirely altruistic.

FamilyWhat If I Don't Want Children? by exu(op): 2:28pm On Oct 12, 2005
Why do people look at you cross eyed when you say you "don't want kids"?  Never understood that.

I realise that some people feel as if they're obliged to get married and have children because that is what is drummed into them from birth.

However, there seem to be a lot of people out there who believe that EVERYONE should get married and EVERYONE should have children.  I'm pretty sure that this "one size fits all" mentality is the root of most of the problems and general discontent we see in society today.

Also, why is it considered selfish to not want children? Surely it is more selfish to desire an extension of yourself in the form of a child.

Christianity EtcRe: Buy a Flat on Your Church's Credit Card by exu(m): 6:18pm On Oct 11, 2005
If that is the case (that he is a legitimate businessman) then why does he feel the need to draw 'church' funds for his own private use...

Surely those funds could be out to better use, i.e. charity? Or is that no longer part of the christian doctrine?

If he wants to be an after dinner speaker then fine, that is his money and he should do as he wishes with it...

However if someone claims to be a 'man of God' and asks his congregation for money in order to fund 'God's work' then shouldn't that money actually be used, for the greater good, and not just to improve the quality of life for the fewhuh

Also, shouldn't he renounce all things worldly, as any good 'pastor' should and show himself to be good examplehuh

What kind of example is he setting and why does he think it's exceptablehuh?
