Adire uses Wax print in order to give it the desired pattern, just like Ankara uses Wax!

That said, the Dutch wax print may have been been brought from overseas but Yoruba were the first to accept it and gave it a name because it looks similar to the local we're have here! Ankara simply means different patterns/colours!

Now, we've incorporated the style into our local ones and has started to produce it!
You're confirming a stereotype...

Wax prints existed all over Nigeria and the process of making batik is much different and more superior to simple indigo on white cotton tie and dye. Please look up Indonesian batik, furthermore ankara is printed.

OPCNAIRALAND:
To pazienza and ezeagu,
In all of colonial England, Manchester and Liverpool were singularly famous for their wool and cotton industries. There is nobody and nowhere in Europe that grows cotton but all over the globe English cotton and wool was a popular and best brand.

Do you know who was the single major supplier of cotton to Liverpool and Manchester? Let's start from this foundation before I give you instruction on the root of ankara and other fabrics connected with Yoruba culture.

Go and read up on the cotton growers of Yorubaland first and get some sense and sober up.

You need to know the footprint of Yoruba antiquity and its contributions and influence on popular culture and fashion around the globe.
I really hope you're not suggesting "Yorubaland" was supplying the bulk of cotton in Liverpool and Manchester and not the slave-holding Southern United States.

What we're talking about here isn't ankara, because we know that that was a result of a failed European mission to copy and destroy the Indonesian batik industry that took a turn and became popular in (west) Africa.

No, what we're talking about here in general is the styling of 'aso ebi' and so on.

if u can't decode the msg am tryn 2 pass across in dat msg of mine, there might not be much I cud do.

I was born and bred outside of igbo land, but b4 my 16th birthday,av read scores of igbo novels like 'isi akwu dara n'ala',..'Omenuko'..,'Juo obinna' and a host of other igbo literatures including religious books. U can now imagine the justice I do to igbo spoken language and parables,..!
Oga one cud be dynamic while not forgetting his roots.
We all cudt hav been born and brought up in igbo land,..wots important is dat u teach ur children and wards our culture, traditions and values.( I have relatives living in the east, but speak v rusty igbo and wit v low igbo values,..I also knw a couplr living in holland,..but their kids dere speak fluent igbo).
Taking up cultures pointlessly or wearing other peoples garments which have no meaning to you, unless you're attending a function themed in the respective culture, does not really say 'dynamic', it just means that a person does not have a strong sense of self, which is why Yoruba and Hausa people do not wear Igbo clothing, whatever that may be in this day and age, who knows. You said Igbo people may even adopt "primitive" aspects of others culture which is what really stood out in the post and that kinda of rubbishes the idea of some kind of beneficial flexibility.

If we're arguing about acculturation anyway then that would mean agbada or babariga would now be considered an Igbo costume, which it is not, therefore nothing has been taken into Igbo culture, it's just a bunch of Igbo people wearing random clothing for no particular reason. A good example of sensible cultural borrowing is the stripy long caps Igbo people wear which was gotten from Ibibio people, now we can say what the hat represents and that it belongs to those communities who had the ekpe mens society, unlike agbada that means nothing in Igbo society.

Jews (using this example with the risk of brining up Jewish 'origin theories') are probably the most 'dynamic' cultural group on earth, but they do not mess with their attires or their customs, Jews wear the costume of their host communities usually, but I have not seen Jews enter a synagogue with a thawb or lederhosen.

igbos are dynamic.we hav no qualms adopting ppls culture (evn the primitive ones),..and modifying it 2 suit purposes.

U will notice dat it's only the igboman dat will dorn hausa and yoruba attires without thinking anytin abt it. But u'd hardly see a yorubaor hausa man puttin on igbo attires (except ofcourse wen dey com beggin 4 votes).
Igbos are dynamic and unrestrained in terms of openheartedness and adventurism.

Dats y u'd always hear (and see for urself) dat 'igbo amaka'

Truth is ours smiley
Igbo people cannot be on the internet shouting "Afonja, Afonja" up and down only to then go and wear agbada and say it's because they are "dynamic". There also isn't much dynamism in Biafra.

There's nothing dynamic about dumping your culture and traditions. That's how Igbo people ended up deserting Igboland to go an be routinely butchered up in Kano.

Nonsense. Call a spade a spade, there is a lost core ideal for Igbo culture which is why Igbo children speak their language less than other major ethnic groups, or is that one "dynamism" as well?

One word: Tourism. People troop in to see the statue from all over the word, and these people spend millions of dollars yearly in the process of buying food, staying in hotels, transport, etc. Not to talk of the aspect of exposure to other peoples cultures and ideas, which is a fast track to economic and infrastructural development.
Don't wanna step on any toe, but I don't think anyone is going to 'troop' into the state just to see this statue. I don't think many people understand Nigeria's main selling points or in general African and other countries points and attractions they use in selling tourism. Nigeria's should be original culture and nature and wildlife, this isn't it.

Still it's better than that nonsense white Jesus statue they built in the east somewhere.

Please I'd be grateful if you could share the meaning of these names.

@ezeagu, I was reading a paper online and I came across another meaning of the name "Onuora". It meant someone who overcame a multitude i.e Onuo ora.
I thought it meant 'Mouth of the people.'

What do you think?
In general people go with 'leader or representative', and if someone were using the other meaning the pronunciation at least would be very different I think, plus in dialects that use lu instead of nu, Onuora is Onuoha, so.

Dubious man, anyway, am not surprised, kalu got degree certificate in 6month. How dubious can one be. Thief.
I don't really understand people who support this guy just because he wasn't in APC. You guys know he's a thief but still hail him because he's Igbo and not in the so-called ruling part.

A shame, not surprising, but a shame nonetheless.

CultureRe: Where Were Africans? by ezeagu(m): 1:38am On Oct 30, 2016
OP your post is actually a case in point in the reason Africans haven't advanced to the take a seat at the league of nations, when other countries and nations see they are lagging about they don't sit down and sulk and feel sorry for themselves choosing to believe their mates are somehow superior to them, instead they strategise and even an individual can bring great change among them to catch up with others.

Look at Taiwan and South Korea in the 50s, and you will know what this means.

Democracy is not suitable for Africa. It has made things worse, much worse.

There are many countries doing very great without democracy. Why must we practice what is alien to us? See what the most expensive form of government has done to our dear nation! Corruption, division, hatred, bigotry, deceit, killing and maiming all because of political positions.

Na God go punish the colonial masters. Dem for leave us to our varous traditional monarchical systems. We will have found our ways to greatness naturally.
Monarchial system back then was running on slave economy and invading others. Parts of the country had what was similar to democracy back then. There are no excuses for corruption apart from a poor system of checks and balances.

I think Chimamanda got it wrong here though Why did she have to express disappointment if any? And she finally alluded to the fact she had lots of interviews after the song hit the market. Isn't that contradictory already?

To be fair, I was proud of her when I heard the song and it is one of the few Beyonce songs I personally downloaded cos of the Chimamanda Factor
She would have kept quiet and let it slide cos hate it or love it Beyonce helped her career in no small measure and not the other way round.

And what is the talk about women though! Even the spelling of woman had MAN in it, what did she expect they talk about!

Feminism thrash!
Why does everyone on here keep saying thrash instead of trash?
