Ruddyface:
Don't mind the poster (Finecat or is it Finedog?), he is filled with delusion. People just speak out of envious speculations, they do not even know the industry well. Is banking all about cash transactions that ATMs would almost replace people? When the machines cash out, who would reload them? Machines? Not even in the US is that done.

Would machine also take up functions of treasury operations, credit booking, credit risk management, legal, HR, financial control, internal control, systems security management, IT, applications management, corporate services and communications, audit/ inspection, physical security, property management and transport pool management e.t.c

Ignorance is really a disease. We still recruit people for banks in droves. This is the sector that has done the most for Nigerian graduates. Go and see what V***phone and co are doing to Nigerian graduates, they trek round towns and cities on peanut salaries with promises to make their appointments permanent only if they meet set target over a period. And they don't mind how this is achieved.

I am serious about connecting the poster if he is so bitter about his not being employed by any bank, even Un**n Bank, which is also recruiting at the moment.
That is a whole lot of Bull crap you just vomitted. I can succesfully employ you and 10 bank workers. Nigerian banks and managements are a true reflections of the Nigerian Govt. lies lies and more lies. I wish the banks well but only if they can be truthful and practise in good faith. YOU MY FRIEND OBVIOUSLY KNOWS NOTHING YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT, I DON'T BLAME YOU FOR DEFENDING YOUR BOYFRIEND'S EMPLOYERS (BANKS). I refuse to argue any further with a naive individual.

Bank Workers Groan Under Deposit Targets: Thousands To Lose Jobs - Experts Speak On Danger Ahead
By Bankole Makinde, Abuja and Seyi Geshinde - 23.08.2008

A mass wave of retrenchment will soon hit the banking industry as managements of banks across the country have reportedly resolved to do away with the services of thousands of their members of staff who could not attain the deposit target recently set for them.

There are presently close to 50,000 workers in the banking sector, out of which more than 60 per cent would ultimately join the labour market under the new dispensation.

Saturday Tribune gathered authoritatively from workers in the various banks that the management of the 25 capitalized banks, have devised fool-proof and unchallengeable mechanism to ease workers out of the system.

The move, according to Saturday Tribune source, is aimed at shoring up the deposit base of banks for expansion and enhance both their liquidity and profitability index.

To achieve this without much protest from the public, the banks were said to have set definite unattainable deposit targets for staffers to quicken their exit from the system.

For example, deposit targets set for attainment before the end of the year hover between N3 billion per branch, N1.3 billion for new intakes and N1.6 billion for old hands per annum.

To compound their predicament, the introduction of the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) has rendered most of them redundant as the jobs of hitherto cashier staff of banks are more or less not needed by the banks.

Not minding the fact that the economy is in near comatose, bank staff are mandated to meet the set target or bid bye to their jobs.

Worst hit, according to Saturday Tribune investigations across many banks in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are “Freshers” and diploma holders who are, out of compulsion, ordered to turn in between N960 million per person annually and Branch Managers who must garner an average of N500 million per annum, just like old staff who must turn in an average of N1.6 billion per annum.

The most liberal bank on the policy, according to Saturday Tribune research, is a first generation bank which has set a “reasonable” N5 million to N50 million deposit target for its staff per annum.

Following the development, most bankers are now looking for less demanding jobs, irrespective of the payment portfolio to get out of the logjam.

Expectedly, fresh female graduates who are good looking remained the major targets of the banks to bring in the “loot” but the ladies too were reportedly complaining that potential depositors would always demand for “sex for cash,” thus making them trooping out of the industry in droves.

The House of Representatives recently invited the bigwigs in the Banking Sector to demand from them the reason why they should engage the ladies in the “sex trade on account of looking for deposit.”

The bankers too were said to have convinced the lawmakers that the issue was that of “offer and acceptance” as no one was forcefully coerced into accepting the job, but that the banks could only survive the stringent monetary policy of the Federal Government by sourcing for funds wherever and however possible.

Saturday Tribune gathered that the lawmakers complained that using the ladies as “experimental rats” could complicate the HIV/AIDS situation in the country.

A top banker who spoke with Saturday Tribune on condition of strict anonymity, declared that the amount of the deposit target chosen by any bank was a direct reflection of its liquidity base and solvency in the banking industry.

However, speaking on the trauma that could follow the sudden lay-off of workers from their duty posts, the Head, Department of Psychiatry, University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Prof Oye Gureje, said depression could set in, thereby leading to psychological problems which were injurious to the victims and the society at large.

He said though, people have their different ways of handling the situation, many, especially, breadwinners in their families, might not be able to adapt favourably with the development when it dawned on them that they could no longer meet their daily obligations.

“If a worker is laid off suddenly from his duty post without any buffer, or certain benefits or sustenance means like pension, along the line, depression may set in and can lead to psychological problems.

“When someone who has been working before could no longer go to work or a breadwinner could no longer provide for his family, such becomes frustrated owing to the need to depend on other people for daily living.

“Again, it leads to anger and some may result to crime as a way of venting the anger on the society.

“Another is if such a person does not have the coping skill or support to sustain while still being unemployed, he/she may take to crime,” Gureje said.

Without offering the needed support, he said the victims might gradually lost their sense of worth and value when they could no longer do what they used to do or meet up with already set plans.

“But when complications begin to set in, the best is to seek for professional help,” Gureje said.

Also contributing, a cardiologist, Dr. Abiodun Adeoye of the UCH, Ibadan, said though a pathetic situation, coping with the depression that might follow depended on a person’s previous health records.

He said if those who fell victims had not had previous records of Psychiatry cases, they might get over the disappointment with time, but if they had been patients, the resultant effects could be awkward.

“Some may not be able to sleep well again or wake up early, it leads to sympathetic drive and all these are what lead to stress which is a psychiatry problem.

“In the long run, it can cause hypertension (high blood pressure) because of excessive thinking, all these are psychological disorders and depression most importantly, it is a psychiatric case.

“For some, they take to excessive eating, gaining weight and if this happens, it can lead to fatness of the heart, which is a cardiac disorder, some may refuse to eat, thereby losing weight, it affects their health too.

“But the fact is that it is not everybody that will be negatively affected, some may be able to cope with the situation, while others may not be able to cope,” Adeoye said.

@Nigeria1

You obviously don't know anything about USA campaign laws. The 527 groups must be  based within the continental USA. And besides, all these people idiots raising money for Obama in Nigeria are not helping him at all. They are helping Mccain by painting Obama as the black candidate. Bad enough a book by Jerome Corsi about Obama that came out last week didn't help matters. The book is already claiming that Obama is an extreme Black liberation member. If Mccain camp gets hold of these nonsense about Ndi-Okereke, they will use it against Obama. These Idiots needs to stop these nonsense. Use your money to fix Nigerian schools, roads etc.

Hi, people please is there any career in Customer care? I would love to go for a masters in customer care and make my career in it. How good and how profitable is it? Is there a career growth in it? Relating with people seems to be something i do with ease and being able to help solve their probs is what i love.

Please do let me know , do you think it is a worthy career path? Do you know of people who have done it to a higher level? Should it be combined with something else?
Instead of wasting your time with a masters in customer care why not do a masters in Business administration?? MBA gives you to use the same skills you need for customer care and with more money and broader and better horizon. Goodluck.

Some thing is definitely wrong with our beloved bank.Every info. coming out of the bank has to do with pay slash.I think management should let people know the true state of the bank and what is really happening. The biggest banks in the world do experience problems, but the only way to overcome this is to address the root cause. All our jobs are on the line because of management irresponsibility and the earlier we realise this the better.
Most people i know in IBPLC are now looking for other jobs, including those in trainning school, can you believe it?person wey never start job wey don begin luk for another one.CHEI!

When we told you that this bank is NOT as strong or healthy as they claim, you chose to believe in fantasy and dayfream. I don't know why average Nigerians don't face reality. They get excited over fantasy. Most of us that knows what's going on with most of these banks has been suspicious since 2005 shortly after the so-called recapitallization. And intercontinental bank keeps getting loans and credit facilities from western banks that are in trouble also. So tell me, what do you expect?? If you seek jobs from these banks because of pay and not for career experience and job satisfactions, you will be disappointed in the long run. Nigerian banks are not what they claim to be. They are chasing the wind. I feeel so bad for most of our graduates and MY HEART BLEED FOR MY BELOVED NAIJA !!!

They refused and gave me a week to make my decision or forget about it or apply after being confirmed in my present bank.I will be due for confirmation in three months time

I suspect, you are working for unity Bank, going by your previous post. I don't know much about Unity Bank but if you have some sense of job security there then i'd advise you to stay there because there are no job security at intercontinental bank. Look here, intercontinental bank is not a financially healthy bank. On top of that, they will hire you as a marketer and dump you if their unrealistic target is not met. Very well put, most of these Nigerian bankers are airheads. Their so called well paying job is like a minimum wage in the states without all the useless stress attached. It's too sad for a country when a bank worker thinks he/she is among the best paying worker. MY HEART BLEEDS FOR NIGERIA. And i feel sorry for these bankers, because come December or January 2009 most of them will be out of job or work at a highly reduced wage. The new Govt. policy that harmonized their account declarations, will expose most of the banks. Atleast 8 to 10 banks are going under. Wait and see.

For a science student, bank work can kill my brain, abeg no crucify me o, I dey talk my own.
I totally agree with you. Even oil and Gas pay more than the banks and very much less stress !! My brother works for LNG and he lives like a king. he travels overseas every year with his young family. He doesn't have to worry about target, stress or some complaining customers. He works 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off. Banks can never be compared to the oil and gas.

feel you guys i am still an hopefull but it is jus the situation of our country that can make inter treat us like that my prayer is that by the time they are ready to call us we will have another place better so that at the end of the day we will not need to wait for their call. my point u guys did not get is that we are not suppose to be treated as shit i mean see we have done medicals for ova 2 months they shld deem it fit that ok o so so time u will be called even if it is next yyear or so so u are not going to make apply some other time something like that. their management have little or no regards for us and that is not so. see my point.
Kemoflash, don't mind those guys. It is good to be hopeful but be real at the same time. start searching for another form of employment because if you wait on the banks, it's a waste of time. I predicted this last year. And these banks will get a long of young guys in serious trouble. I foresaw trouble last year when intercontinental began to burrow money from foreign banks and yet posted a big profit. shortly after that, i read a MEMO sent to the employees by Akingbola. He told his employees that if they don't get customers to open accounts with inter, they would lose their jobs. I guess his threats are coming to past. PLEASE DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THESE BANKS. OIL AND GAS, PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES IS THE PLACE TO BE NOW.
