As long as they don't engage the protesters. The soldiers have to be extra careful as all eyes are on Nigeria now. The youths are not armed and they are not threats to national security. The army can stay anywhere they want but they should allow the protesters free passage. The anger in the nation now is beyond the fear of the military. People are actually willing to die and that is rare for Nigerians. 49 Likes 1 Share |

From Ughelli to the world Buhari didn't see this coming at all. No one did. Who would have thought that Nigerians would grow such wings almost over night. If these protests don't change Nigeria then nothing else, apart from outright war, can change Nigeria. 40 Likes 1 Share |

Police season All Nigerian police officers should normally be subjected to random drug tests and psychological evaluation. In fact, psychological assessment should be part of their promotion criteria and the assessors should be independent of the Police Force. I really like how we are exposing the officers. They should be on their toes when discharging their duties. Nigerian youths are watching. Nigerian youths do not forgive. Nigerian youths do not forget. 8 Likes |

Maxsbez: Not necessarily. If your serum creatinine result is normal and they didn't discover other complications from the urinalysis and x-ray, you'll pass the medicals. However, if the high BP is caused by kidney, liver or heart issues, you'll be asked to go for further tests. Generally, as long as you're healthy, you shouldn't bother about high BP in your medicals. Many people have what's called "white coat hypertension". |

Crime / Re: When Bail Is Actually Free, I Will Believe The Police Has Been Reformed by fratermathy(m): 7:25am On Oct 13, 2020 |
You are on point. I've always wondered why people pay to bail themselves when it's clear that bail is free. There was a time that a close relation had a police case and when his name was cleared, the DPO demanded N20,000 as bail. I quickly called the PCRRU on 08057000003. I spoke to an officer about the bail situation and they coerced the DPO to release the person without any payment. I think the time has come for Nigerians to use these avenues as a way of changing things. If any policeman harasses you or asks for money for bail, do not suffer in silence. Escalate the issue and you'll be surpised that the situation will change. The PCRRU is also on Twitter and Facebook. They have an app and a WhatsApp line. You can even send texts discreetly and get responses. If we stand together and say no to impunity and extortion, we will succeed as a nation. 36 Likes 10 Shares |

Great news. However, we shouldn't relent. Focus should now be on SAKS, SACS, and other dubious units which may be inclined to take over from SARS. The former SARS officers should also be assessed well before redeployment to any unit that deals with civilians. Many people may think that this achievement is small or inconsequential but rest assured that its impact is in the message that was sent. The message was strong and should be enough to scare anyone who thinks that civilians have no rights. In fact, the government as a whole should be scared of this success. 243 Likes 13 Shares |

ethicallyright: You have made intelligent points and I agree with you on many of them. However, my problem with SARS is that the officers clearly lack professionalism. They treat everyone they see as a potential criminal and they profile you based on subjective parameters. I'm a young lecturer and I have been harassed several times by SARS officers just because I'm young, drive a car, and look neat. I usually have to show them my ID card before I am let off the hook. In one or two cases, the SARS officer completely ignored my ID and proceeded to harass me. I vehemently refused them from searching my phone and I threatened fire and brimstone on them. I could only do that because it was a public place and I know my rights. The average Nigerian youth has been psychologically oriented to fear armed officers and the officers take advantage of this. Imagine what the trigger happy officers would do if I had demanded my rights in a secluded location? Tales and facts abound of how SARS officers have killed, maimed and tortured innocent people who dared to ask simple questions. I do not personally advocate for the end of SARS because that won't change a thing. Other police officers will just take their place. I want a situation where the SARS officers can be held accountable. We may have to start the use of body cameras, location tracking, retraining, psychological evaluation and routine substance abuse tests. SARS officers should be placed within a clear structure in which someone is accountable for their actions. If a squad messes up, their leader or the zonal leader should be arrested and made to produce the squad. The officers should also be prevented from stopping cars or blocking roads. They can do their jobs more effectively as patrol teams. Investigations should be done in collaboration with non-SARS officers who would check for human rights violation. The point I'm making is that SARS, and indeed the entire police force, has to be overhauled and rebranded for contemporary needs and with contemporary technology and developments. The police still has a colonial mentality and until that changes, all the noise we are making will amount to nothing. 3 Likes |

adeniyi3971: If she gets admitted, she won't have issues getting the study permit. However, be prepared to show proof of adequate funds. I know someone in this program at McGill who already has an AIP. I wouldn't advise your sister to apply with her kid immediately except the child is less than 4 years of age. If she must apply with the child, she should be ready to show proof of more funds. Basically, if she gets admitted, she should plan to show proof of at least 10million in her account (tuition+living expenses). |

Police again!! Why is the Nigerian police mostly in the news for all the wrong reasons these days? I think the signs are enough that the entire police force should be overhauled and remodelled. Things are not looking good at all. One idiot with an AK47 will just drink dry gin or ogogoro and think innocent people are their shooting targets... The average Nigerian doesn't like or trust the police. That's how low we've descended as a nation. 88 Likes 4 Shares |

fehinebony: Hi Fehinebony, This situation is not quite common, but I will tell you to be positive because your eligibility is indicated as passed. I must assume then that the VO initially refused you but through some intervention or change of mind, s/he changed the decision and indicated this with the "entered in error" function that we see in the GCMS note. It is also possible for the reverse to be the case but that is unlikely since you said you received the first stage clearance letter some weeks later. I am curious to know if that is the only note made by the VO. Are there other notes? If there are, we should see them too. It will also be helpful for us to know the program you applied for, the school, and its duration. 1 Like |

gbadeolu1: Hi Gbadeolu1, Congratulations on your admission and your funding offer. Your funding offer is strong enough to get you through the study permit application process. With regard to your questions, I will try to answer them from my perspective. 1. If you are applying from Nigeria, you may have to actually deposit the balance from your scholarship in your Naira account and attach the letter in order to show the VO the source of the money. The VO wouldn't question it because you already have funding and that answers most questions concerning your proof of finance. 2. If your wife has a business (even without a CAC), simply say so and then possibly upload her SoA to prove that she can take care of herself and your child in your absence. You can consolidate this by also indicating your desire to send her a monthly stipend from your funding money. Try to be specific with this amount. IRCC requires you to show proof of C$10,000 for living expenses but you have C$14,000. You can commit $2000 per year to support your family, in addition to what your wife makes. This would make sense. 3. A survey plan and perhaps deed of transfer or sales receipt. Basically, you have strong home ties with your family. The landed property only consolidates this and makes your claim stronger. 4. Please, do not use any third party sponsor. You are a PhD study permit applicant. You are also sponsoring yourself with the funding money you received. Don't complicate your application with too many documents and seemingly "desperate" maneuvers. All the best! 1 Like 1 Share |

ayoadefantastic: Your BVL message can indicate only one of two things but given your profile, I doubt that it is a rejection. However, since many people are not receiving passport requests at the time, we really can't say what is in store for your application. Do keep us updated when an update comes. |

Uki247: From what I see, the first VO assessed you positively but somehow, the same VO or another one reassessed your file and changed your eligibility status to failed. Something is wrong along the line. Maybe there's a mixup. I would raise a webform if I were you, especially if indeed you got a medical request. I am assuming that you didn't get an AIP because you didn't mention it but if you did, kindly tell us. Don't slide into despair. Good news may yet come your way. 1 Like |

Oghogho1313: Hi Oghogho1313, You seem to have quite a strong profile, hence my intervention. Everything appears reasonable and good with your documents. Many people get approved with even fewer documents. It appears the VO was not quite satisfied concerning your reasons for doing an MBA, especially since your first degree was in Engineering. You may have to address this issue directly as it seems to be the major issue with your application. Perhaps, when reapplying, you should write a comprehensive L.O.E. and state why an MBA is the best path for you now, considering your prior work experience and future prospects in terms of career advancement. You have to show that an MBA is absolutely necessary for your career and that you will get a return on investment. It is interesting that the VO did not comment negatively on your proof of finance. That's a good thing. The family ties that is mentioned is basically within the context of your failure to prove that an MBA is the logical and necessary step for you, especially in Canada, and more especially as an MBA can easily be done in Nigeria. I wish you good luck as you repackage your application. May the odds favour you next time. 2 Likes |

ojzreal: I read the entire article. It appears that the conversation on how to welcome international students in this pandemic situation is currently ongoing. It's good that they have a figure now. I had suspected that one of the purposes of the AIP was for IRCC to have a figure that they can work with when thinking of allowing international students back in. 3 Likes |

Trip2: I am talking as a fully funded PhD student who is acquainted with the PhD funding dynamics of the Humanities and Social Sciences in North America. Guaranteed funding offers are binding till the end of the offer duration, hence the word "guaranteed". They will not be rescinded or reduced except the student loses studentship or some serious economic catastrophe happens. So what you're saying is that funding is rescinded on account of lack of progress with research and my counter argument is that funding is not actually rescinded for that but rather, studentship is lost and with it, the funding. Failure to thrive in graduate school doesn't implicate only funding but studentship and one cannot leave while the other remains. No one will take away guaranteed funding offered except the condition for that offer is no more and in almost all instances, the condition for that offer is to maintain active full-time student status. To maintain active student status means to work towards your degree. In essence, they won't rescind funding just because you have a little setback for a semester, for instance. However, if the setback progresses into stagnation and failure to meet the necessary degree milestones, the person loses studentship entirely and with it, the funding offer. On the issue of study permit refusal with funding, it is quite rare for that to happen but even when it does happens, the reason is not because of financial capacity but more like home ties, academic progression, and other allied reasons. When it is because of finance, then it may be tied to insufficient funds, especially if the tuition is so high that the balance drops to less than C$10,000 per year. I've seen people get visas with full funding and a personal account balance of just N100,000. No kidding. Since it appears we are both talking from experience, let's not argue over this. Experiences can indeed change the way we see things. All experiences are not the same and the essence of exchanges like this is for others to see the broader picture and adapt accordingly despite the diversity of experiences. 3 Likes |
