Politics / Re: Sagay Tells Buhari To Seek Senate’s Confirmation For Magu Again by freeze001(f): 9:04am On Nov 21, 2019
I believe there should be a limit to holding an appointment in acting capacity, say not more than six months. Within that time all investigations should have been concluded and confirmation, where required, is secured from the Senate. In fact, any serious-minded appointing authority should have identified and discreetly screened/investigated likely appointees within the last six months of the substantive office holder so as that tenure ends, there are no unnecessary lapses or tenure extensions.

It should not be that a person like Magu who has been acting Chairman of the EFCC for almost 5 years, if confirmed now, would be a eligible for a statutory tenure which is also renewable by another tenure. It should not also be that a person is kept acting in perpetuity, not knowing his fate. It should not also be that the Executive will still have its way despite non confirmation by the majority of the Senate who represent the people. Where is the power of checks and balances then?

So many things wrong with the Constitution and statute books of this country, breeding and enabling impunity. Like someone said, there is no president as irresponsible as a Nigerian president because he has too much powers!

Alanpoza007:

I agree with your intelligent comment to a large extent but your point of him contacting Onyeama privately assuming his story is true is where I disagree. If Onyeama put his business and not his emotion first, he wouldn't deny a customer who booked a valid flight ticket the chance to travel with his Airline regardless of political reasons. The moment he did that, then he should be ready to stomach any unnecessary media wash-down like this one cos Igbokwe would want to massage his already deflated ego by that incident.

Have you read Air Peace's official statement on this issue? If no, please look for it and read. For your information, Allen Onyema is not that petty an individual to supposedly block just one person from using his airline for an incident that occurred over a year ago. Like I asked, why this one now when he had since been using the airline all along? He clearly stated that he came late, the next flights were not available so whose fault is it that he failed to arrive in time? Is Allen working at the airport as check-in staff? There are rules Joe should have complied with and he failed so why the fuss?

More importantly, if Joe was not a mere trouble maker without roots, always out to badmouth Igbos just to look good to others, he would have reached out privately to Allen, he has that access. There are also other channels for laying formal reports but not to deliberately set out on social media to tarnish the image of a business more so that of a brother that he knows has no special patronage from government like Dangote and co. Has he ever commended Air Peace for good work? He is a mad man!

They have sent this one to start bad-mouthing Air Peace abi? If he was actually barred, why was he able to fly the air line last week as claimed?

Talking of criticism, how well does the APC/government he works for take criticism? Why are we hearing nonsense hate speech and social media regulation bills? If he meant well, he could have contacted Allen Onyema personally/directly as a brother, i.e assuming his story is true but here he is trying all he can to discredit a brother and his business. Dirty gutter cow!

Did he ever publicly commend this same Air Peace for magnanimously offering his services free of charge to victims of attacks in South Africa? Smelly, silly lout!

It appears that the news is not authentic. However, those of you rejoicing, have you forgotten that there is a subsisting judgment against the APC nullifying the APC Baysela primaries? If there is an actual judgement against PDP and both are upheld, it would mean the neither APC nor PDP would be qualified to field candidates...

I agree with you 100% about insensitivity, but on the other hand, showing neatly dressed children caught hawking during school hours conveyed nothing, that's basically misrepresenting the situation with neatly dressed children in a classroom that doesn't highlight the seriousness and damaging impact of the situation and the toll on the society.

Pictures sometimes mobilize and galvanize us to take a stand and make needed changes.

My emphasis was on the last picture. If the idea was to stop them from hawking and provide better alternatives/options, they should not have been made to pick up and carry the same items that represent their unfortunate situations. The other pictures with them sitting with those bowls sufficiently captured whatever essence without further dehumanising them. You can see them in one picture hiding their faces and then they are forced to stand up, carry the hawking items and smile for the camera! Where then is the relief? How would you feel if you were in such a situation?

It is usually criminals that are caught in the act that are shamed by forcing them to continue holding unto whatever item they were caught with in public glare. However, these children are not criminals, so they did not have to be used/portrayed in such a callous manner.

The last picture is a complete aberration and should not have been taken, least of all released to the public. If the state government is supposedly trying to take these children off the streets, which is commendable, why were they then required to take pictures with the very items that represent the ills of their conditions and with the Commissioner standing right there? These are children whose identities should be protected yet the same government has released such an uncomplimentary picture, to what end? Someone obviously asked them to carry those bowls and stand with the commissioner, it is not a random picture and that is the worst form of insensitivity!

Governance/leadership in this country leaves a lot to be desired. The better picture should have been to show these children enrolled in schools and dressed in clean uniforms within a learning environment not this! Their families should also be evaluated and provided with sustainable livelihood skills and some capital or equipment to keep the kids off the streets.

I am not quite certain you read and understood my post especially the bold parts. It is not only for juvenile offenses that the identities of children should be protected hence your reference to crime. Also, I clearly did not refer to crime in any way, rather I highlighted the insensitivity of such a picture. There were other pictures with them sitting on the floor, some with hidden faces and those bowls away from their heads. Those were sufficient to drive home the message that they were found hawking during school hours and the state intends to curb such activities.

Now, if they had actually rehabilitated those kids and their families and took pictures of them in clean uniforms, enrolled in appropriate places of learning as I had suggested, that would have sent a message of hope and joy that indeed the state had put positive actions to its stated intentions. It is absolutely unfair, insensitive and downright abusive to have made those children carry those heavy bowls of water to take pictures with the Commissioner. If you understood the concept of symbolism, you'd have known that it is more effective and appealing to divest them of all signs and props/representations of abuse which those underage children had been put through due most likely, to economic hardship!

It is far easier to believe that the state government means good business on this issue when the general populace can honestly say that children are no longer found hawking especially during school hours than through some ill-thought photo op. Real time evidence makes all the difference! If the government chooses not to follow through and actually enroll them in schools, they will be back on the streets and then what purpose would such a nasty picture have served? She is a commissioner and not some random person, an accusation of child kidnap will not even be remotely considered in the circumstance.

mickykhe:

I don't think u r more intelligent then the commissioner who chooses to show her fave with them in the picture, look at this from a different angle. That picture is an evidence that this children where catch Hawking during school hours, and dat they r with the commissioner too, they where not kidnapped, this is a cases of children and is very complicated, in case any of the parent or guardians decide to make case of this possible support by an opposition party and term the woman a kidnapper and child trafficking. Another case can be, if some random pix of well dressed children r posted online and said to be children catch from the street and sent back to school by the commissioner me and u will not easier believe her, so she has every right to do dis, the children r not doing are crime and r not criminals, so nothing to be ashamed of in the future.

The great irony in your attempt at calling Sowore a hypocrite is that you've only managed to showcase your own brazen hypocrisy: what you really resent is Sowore's having had anything bad to say about your plaster god GEJ, regardless of whether or not those statements were based in fact.

What are you yapping about? You should have taken the time to read through the thread before jumping in with your comments. My post was not directed at Sowore, rather to all them so called Buharists on this forum that never thought 2ice over calling Jonathan names and framed all the propaganda they could in the name of fighting bad governance but are suddenly gentle now that Buhari is clearly even worse than Jonathan ever was. That is why my post was centred on calling out those hypocrites that called Jonathan directly over any perceived wrongdoing committed by other persons just because he was president but find it difficult to maintain such tempo and do same to Buhari now that he is president.

You are quick to start looking for how to throw insults without taking the time to properly digest issues. That's a major character flaw you need to address really quickly.

There is no crime in fighting for national interest as you claim. The crime is when you employ different standards. If you were bold to call out Jonathan directly for bad governance, do the same to Buhari. For all the time you called a former president clueless and all other uncomplimentary invectives, we expect to do the same to another serving president whose administration is also fraught with bad governance issues. Very simple. For as long as you are unable to do that, hypocrisy becomes you.

seunmsg:

Nigeria has always been a cesspit of impunity and corruption. Obasanjo, Yar’adua, Jonathan all abused the powers of their office during their administration. Atiku would have been worse judging by how he abused his office as Vice President between 1999-2003. No sensible Nigerian would have supported Jonathan to continue in 2015 or Atiku to take over in 2019.

Btw, who are the you people? This is about Sowore and not me or the Yoruba ethnic group. Sowore is a fighter who is despised by all our political elites across party divide because he’s fighting for the masses. He fought the draconian military dictators, he fought the cabals of the Yar’adua administration, he fought the corrupt rogues of the Jonathan administration and he’s fighting the impunity of the Buhari administration.

So you see, the joke is on people like you who can’t see the bigger picture due to tribalism. Some of us are guided by altruistic national interest in making our political choices and not stupid tribal interest. We fight for Nigeria and nothing else. Period!

These APC supporters lurking around and dotting various threads with how they find the continuous incarceration of Sowore by the government they support, unacceptable, are not yet serious. Is that the only unacceptable thing they can talk about just to claim objectivity? Is it because this one is blatant and there is no way to explain it away or justify it?
I'm sure if an Igbo man was Head of DSS and this was happening, they would have been screaming out his name without compunction. I am surprised they have not gone to dig up one lie to claim that Jonathan did the same thing just to protect their master Buhari. Every Nigerian must demand? The few that have demanded have you not seen the pictures and videos of them being threatened and attacked by gun-wielding DSS officials? Is it not the same demand for good governance that landed Sowore in this mess now? Or will you separate good governance from respect for the rule of law including valid court orders?

Be bold enough to criticise Buhari that appointed the head of that office. They are the persons that are directly responsible for this wave of lawlessness that has been the hallmark if this administration. Stop these gentle posts, this was not how you were when PDP/GEJ were in office.

Any effort to combat the almajiri, street begging malaise is welcome. However, was it done the right way? What criteria were used to determine beneficiaries? Is there an identifiable database/record for this process that has led to the identification of these beggars? Was there some feasibility study showing that receipt of 30k by an individual for 6 months will indeed lift such person out of poverty? Is this is a sustainable initiative (long-term) and is there some sustainable business plan for beneficiaries that they can be mainstreamed into with adequate monitoring for a specified period of time? If yes, who are these monitors? Are there checks to ensure that they do not corrupt the process? Is the 30k/month a gift or a loan? What is the mode of disbursement? Direct payment into bank accounts of beneficiaries or through some middle man? Do all beneficiaries own bank accounts? How can Borno indigenes be sure that these monies are actually going to the supposed targets and is not some grand embezzlement scheme?

So many basic issues to address and questions to be answered, we hope these were taken into consideration but for dis Naija wey we know, it is well.

Akpabio should gift Ekpeyong the senatorial district. I see no issue here.

Overseeing NDDC makes Akpabio some sort of governor over 6 States, which is way more cooler than being the senator of 1 of 3 districts in a state.

I did not say they are not guilty, but Hausa man himself observed in a proverb that ‘if the fly is stubborn, the candy is sweet’,” the emir said.

You see this quote above especially the bold part? It is meant for people like you. You even went as far as calling him an accidental Emir just because of your political inclinations. You support idiots that refuse to tell the truth! If he had attacked the Igbo tribe for the activities of a few I'm sure you would have commended him for the grammar he would have used and even hailed him as the best Emir ever!

Just note that the victims were the wandering children who are most likely wondering why they had been brought back to dirt n hunger! Their parents were criminally negligent and in a sane, decent country, those kids would have been seized from them. In fact, prolific childbearing would have been curtailed both by legislation and policy! It is this irresponsible parenting and almajiri life that gives Nigeria the unenviable statistics of having the highest number of out-of-school children!

FriendNG:

Besides, these kidnappings weren't just random, they were well planned and organised. Instead of blaming the victims of this atrocious act, you're blame the community. This is like blaming a rape victim. Just because u are privileged to be a leader by an accident of birth doesn't give u the right to speak so arrogantly.

Indirectly he is giving the abductors an upper hand, because there is not a single sentence where he criminalised the abductors but he criminalised the victims.

I need someone to help me point out a single statement in the entire write-up where the accidental emir condemned the abductors.
