BusinessRe: CBN Rolls Back Reforms -Universal Banking To Be Phased Out 2011 by Gekko(m): 5:10pm On Mar 16, 2010
OYB_MEND:
I know whats available in global practice

Barclays, HSBC, Santandier, etc were not prevented from engaging in mortgage or insurance business because of the global recession.

By the way its been up to 8 months since the reforms started. I find it curious that you think I should still be waiting for the framework of about an 8 month old reform programme.

are we acting before planning here?
like i said im no banker, what i got from the article is that he is attempting to shine some light on the dark shadowy areas of banking where high risk banking, trading etc intersects with commercial banking.  The plan to reform was announced just recently and the deadline is 18months after drawing up a viable solution working in conjunction with all the stakeholders in banking.  I see no reason to raise alarm until they present their plans.

OYB_MEND:
what is traditional banking? Intermediation
Is there any Bank in the developed world right now that does nothing but Intermediation. I don't know of one.

The money which people deposit on Bank will be used to finance other businesses to make profit, this is how Banks make the money they pay as interest to depositors. The Morgage companies will also need loans from Banks to finance Mortgages.
So the end result is the same thing except that Banks have simply been prevented from engaging in developing new Businesses.

Whatever you do their will be risk in Business. So we will see where are this noise of risk management wil take us. All Sanusi's policies are retrogressive.

He accused Banks of being too big and Bankers of being larger than life. Well now we have a CBN Over playing its hands, destroying the economy and banks and taking over the role of Banks in the economy.

After destroying Banks the CBN now want to finance Power projects on its own, NNPC is running abroad to seek loans, Dangote paid off his loans in Nigeria only to run to South Africa  to seek loans.

Slowly but surely Sanusi is killing our economy.
go back and read his article.

his reforms is going to be in line with global practices and i think you should wait till they draw a framework before you prematurely draw conclusions.
BusinessRe: CBN Rolls Back Reforms -Universal Banking To Be Phased Out 2011 by Gekko(m): 3:58pm On Mar 16, 2010
im no banker, but isn't he simply trying to separate banks that combine traditional commercial banking with high-risk investment banking to protect customers? isn't this what  triggered the recession in U.S?
I dont see whats islamic about it.

PoliticsRe: Lets Rally Round To Support Donald Duke For President Come 2011 by Gekko(m): 7:42pm On Mar 12, 2010
insideview:
I am a Cross Riverian. The State that presently recieves about N1.2b in federal allocation, about the lowest in Nigeria. Juxtapose Akwa Ibom's N10Bn+ monthly for effect. (Source: Fed Min. of Fin website)

Donald Duke did set up a nice street party in calabar. Tarred roads, and provided a nice atmosphere for calabar. In a country bereft of leadership and vision, his approach, coupled with skillful use of the media (borderline propaganda), was a breath of fresh air for an absolutely starved populace.

people hold the erroneous belief that TINAPA is a private sector development midwifed by the State under Donald, it was anything but. TINAPA was not built with private sector funds, the State Government under Donald took on huge loans from commercial banks, at commercial rates (i stand to be corrected), by some estimates as much as N80bn+, to undertake the project, payment of which is now a first line charge on the state's federal allocation. While the private sector did contribute, the volume of the state's investment is such that one may safely assert that it was State financed.  From a critical point of view, financially, TINAPA is a black hole for the state. Legal framework and sundry issues critical to its success were not addressed before committing huge sums to the project hence its present status. Its nice to look at, but as an investment decision, I'm not so sure.

Donald Duke did define a new narrative for Cross River State, & he put it on the map as some have rightly pointed out; but ultimately, Donald Duke chose to and will be judged by the fate of TINAPA, a "Luxury Shopping Resort" in a country where 70% of the populace live on less than $1 a day, situated in one of the most disadvantaged states in the federation. It is the single biggest investment decision taken in Cross River and one that will have an impact on the state's finances for years to come (cost inclusive of interest payments on loans from commercial banks for a development project of a long term nature, return on investment, time value of money, opportunity cost of forgone roads, schools, infrastructure, health facilities, etc).

Ultimately, was the decision to commit Cross River state to TINAPA a  good idea, some would say so, it surely is a nice place to visit; but that it was a sound decision, that would yield the greatest good, to the greatest number of Cross Riverians (it was thier monies that were used and thier collective futures mortgaged), i'm not so sure.

Making a choice based purely on his persona, what the newspapers said he did, what some believe he did, what he actually did,  the cleanliness of calabar, or sundry stuff, 2011 is in the kitty. But if i am to base my decision on TINAPA for which he choses to be defined and what i think will become of it (Ala Dubai's debt fuelled and ultimately unsustainable boom), and make no mistake, in the end, "its the economy silly", I'll pass on 2011. I'm sure by then Nigeria will throw up an "alternative", it always does. (not like we go out to vote anyway)

ps.
Its a democracy, we dont all have to subscribe to a single view. that would be facsist. (for those with a diffenrent opinion)
Spectacular insight, much appreciated.

The bolded is wrong. The success of the Obama approach in Nigeria can succeed in devastating ways if the manifesto is right and leaders of the campaign machinery at ground level are both technically savvy, street wise and intelligent. But more than anything, it hinges around the manifesto.
If pastors can greatly extend their reach with the most crude and rudimentry aspects of the web, what about a politician with the "right" message?
you are right only if a brilliant strategy is employed to disseminate information to the masses by organizing foot soldiers thats going to carry the message to the people.

the effectiveness of obama campaign has lot to do with his communication strategy, i am not convinced campaigning on facebook or any social media network can yield any favorable results for a Nigerian candidate using the same methods.

You still don't get it. Facebook, celebrities etc do not represent the grassroot. Matter of fact, many of those people will not even vote! Do you that even University students work for the grassroot politicians? It's cash and carry my friend. You are obviously not a grassroot yourself.

I watched one campaign rally that Utomi did on TV in Lagos(imagine in Lagos), people in attendance were not up to hundred. Was wondering where all the progressive were.

These progressives have to either learn grassroot politics from Sarakis, Tinubus etc or join the grassroots of like minds and be willing to play by the rules for a term like Fashola. Then they can launch out on their own later. I believe if the performance is good, the masses will eventually see the difference and support. But, as a start
I agree with you Akanbi. I am not going to even delude myself into thinking Duke can win an election in Nigeria because he is saying the right things or because hes charismatic. Unless he turns into Hulk Hogan and wrestles the power from the grips of the cabal he has no shot. We stilll have a long way to go to educate and orientate "voting Nigerians" on how to select leadership. campaigning on facebook and reaching out to folks in Houston is not even a tenth of the battle. First we need electoral reforms before he even gets a slight chance then he needs to convince the Okada riders, Market women, Taxis drivers, Laborers, Students, Farmers, civil workers, almajiris, militants, etc . most these folks dont use facebook, what worked for obama is not going to work in Nigeria.

Yes, I know about Tinapa, but its shortcomings are as sweeping as the vision that created it. Tinapa cannot provide the sort of anwers I am after (though it satisfies me that he is intelligent and forward looking), neither can basic research (I'll do that anyway grin). The sort of stuff I need are things that he has done to better the lot of the common man, what his personality is like, his outlook on life etc.
hes a party animal fo sure, i heard his yearly carnival is to place to be.

Dangiwa Umar is no leader, he is a social critic.

What we need is a decisive leader, Donald Duke is a very decisive leader. All you need to run a country is a good head on your shoulder and a large heart. This has been lacking. The greatest Militaries in the world have had lawyers run them, we must not always resort to soldiers to run Nigeria.

We simply need smart guys ready to be decisive. Dangiwa Umar does not fall in this category.
Good points and i can't argue with you since i have much to learn about Nigeria's political landscape
but we need smart guys with the ability to roll with the punches when the going gets rough, and it certainly will.
are u sure duke wont get overwhelmed and fold under pressure? is he savvy or strong enough to tame the animals in this country?

Do you honestly believe that Abubakar Umar will make a better leader than Donald Duke or Fashola?
Governing a state is a world of difference than leading a nation like Nigeria. I believe we still need a strong hand paired with a young vibrant leader like a fashola or duke to forge ahead.  I am not convinced fash or duke is prepared for Aso rock,  perhaps im wrong.

Just don't think he has the political muscle to lift a country like Nigeria.  And to be realistic, since there is no formidable voice of opposition to PDP in the country our prospects are limited to a northerner.
So i am praying for a miracle at this point.

I posted pictures of Lagos city and he posted pictures of places outside Lagos city. Obviously, he misunderstood my post and was trying to counterbalance what I posted so, I simply let him know the difference between the 2.

It's OK to challenge my post based on what I claimed, not what I did not claim because I didn't say anything about other cities in Lagos state, I said Lagos city.

People just need to read and understand before going for their keyboards.

And if I might add, loving and being proud of your state is not a crime and it doesn't mean you are an apologist or a paid agent. It's nothing but pride and sense of belonging good or bad. I wish other folks have the same level of love and admiration for their different states, towns and villages. Part of our problem in Nigeria is the fact that a lot of us are very cynical about other people and fail to muster the same level of energy used in criticizing other people to do same back in our respective states. We spend too much time worrying about other people when in fact our is not any better.

Lagos is by far not a perfect state, but good or bad, it's still my state and I love it for what it is.
correct me if i'm wrong but isnt Ajegunle, Mushin, Agege, and co all part of Metropolitan Lagos.

At this point in time, a good decision making is necessary on the part of the Acting President.

If he fails to take control of the military and change the present security arrangements as well as the ministers, he'll end up in a very bad situation where his order on instruction will not hold any substance.
some of you folks are asking too much from a guy who never had any ambitions for becoming the president, he is not built for this. I bet he is learning on the job as we speak, he has no military experience, he is not a lawyer, never campaigned for office, has limited experience in aso rock i can go on and on. I suggest you manage your expectations and save yourself from hypertension.
