PoliticsRe: Obj Is Bad Yes, But He's Still Nigeria's Best Ever President. No Contest by Gekko(m): 6:44pm On May 24, 2010
strangleyo:
It's interesting this thread, I see most posters have no clue what they are talking about.

Electricity, crime, corruption, and so on have all gotten worse not because the president made it worse, but because of uncontrolled population growth without any investment in infrastructure to accommodate that growth. The truth is, we don't know how to.

A few people mentioned that Obj was a decent president, but his own ego sometimes got in the way of his job. That is correct.

Most of Nigeria's problems are beyond the grasp of one man's control. Ibb, Abacha, Obj, Shagari, we can name them all day, none of them could alone stop the rot. Its comes within the depths of our own past and the nature of our psyche.

Take something as simple as civil service; administrative duties such as property tax collection, and the re-allocation of resources at the municipal level for public works projects such as sewers, roads, health clinics, street lamps, local schools and then their maintenance. How many people at the civil service level know how the process works? How many Nigerians know how this process works?

Did IBB not try and reign in on civil service ineptitude? Was he successful? Absolutely not? Why? Because we do not have, and never have had the proper framework for nationhood. We are 4 nations. No. 4 major Ethnic groups lumped together, and none of us, I mean, none, can make this thing actually work.

Nigeria is a shambolic geographic location. I will refrain from even calling it a country.

Obasanjo did what he could, as did Yar'Adua, and the countless before them, but the system is simply non-existent and the framework of nationhood is not something the average Nigerian has any interest in.

Anything short of wholesale Soviet or China style restructuring of our system from both the top down and bottom up will fail and making this thing work.

Truthfully I've become despondent about our prospects for the future, perhaps slaughtering all of our leaders like Russia, China, France and countless other 'success' stories is the only option we may have at restructuring the system. When I say leaders I don't mean politicians, I mean our "real" leaders, the ones that sold our brothers to the Portuguese for gold nuggets and mirrors, the elders, the preachers, the tribal kings, that's where half of our problems lie.

You know where the other half are,

And its not in the presidential villa.
Good post, us Nigerians are the least patriotic people ever, especially when it comes to nation building.  We are the architects of our own misfortune. EOS

oh yeah, OBJ is the least worst President.

@Kobojunkie

I agree with you 100 percent.

I will continue to remain pessimistic about Nigeria until all those criminals who are still walking freely with their ill gotten wealth are brought to justice. My opinion.
What type of interaction and opinion does GJ think of getting through Facebook that the masses have not made known to the various criminal president since the so called independence of that contraption called Nigeria.

If GJ is a Nigerian, born and grew up in Nigeria, he does not have to search far to see and hear the cries of the people and what the Nigerian people badly wants. The suffering, voices and weeping of the Nigerian people should be enough of a facebook.

The question is : Do Nigerians need jobs, do we need electricity, water, house, food, good roads, schools, hospitals etc. The answer is yes and if yes, what are the plans of the current administration in achieving these basics and primary essentials of life.
If he does not have any plans instead of embarking on Obama style campaign  he should honestly resign and never think of contesting any election in Nigeria for the rest of his life.

The truth is that for those trying in vain to compare the dissemination of information between the USA and the contraption called Nigerian should know that the former have already succeeded in providing the essentials of life for its citizens while the latter have not been able to do so.

Mr GJ go and do your homework, just go to work, go to work for God sake. This is no time to start these old and pretentious attitude to hear opinions from Nigerians. Have you not heard enough? You know what the people need or don't you. If you do not please kindly resign honourably, but if you do then go to work.
Well said!! cool

paddy_lo:

Isnt this a kind of chicken and egg situation?

We dont pay enough for electricity. . so foriegn companies are not incentivized to come in

and if they are incentivized to come in. . Then the cost of electricity will be too much to afford

I believe that the Govt can deregulate the price of power. .
but it can also help the companies by giving them tax breaks. .or cheap funding(1%) to build power plants

I know its not the same, but Foreign telecomms companies have spent close to $18billion since 2000 to roll out services in nigeria
If we can get something like that in the power sector,it should be a win win

Perhaps they can use prepaid meters, and people can buy what they can afford upfront
I am paying roughly the equivalent of 6000 naira for uninterrupted electricty abroad, isn't Nigerians paying more to buy diesel to power generators?

Being on facebook doesn't stop him from carrying out his duties. I bet y'all prefer those bastards in the military who will only dictate and you must obey! How dare you cough when they speak? And to crown it all nothing will still move in Nigeria.

Now, you have a President who wants to reach out to you and hear you but no you prefer to be left in the rat hole and die grumbling without no one giving a hoot about your pathetic life!

Like being on facebook automatically means Nigeria is doomed! Go hit your head if you can't stand the news.
You are obviously a tool!  Jonathan is being remote controlled by those "bastards in the military" and its been 3months in office and we have no idea which direction he is taking Nigeria.  So far he is spent most of his time politicking and scheming on how to consolidate power.  He has less than year left before elections, you think this is the time to initiate dialogue on facebook?  huh  How about electoral reforms? implementation of the budget? UWais report? FOI bill?

Abeg cool down. The same Nigerians that shout that elections in Nigeria are not credible, and that winners are not necessarily carrying the peoples mandate, are the same ones that berate some other politicians that they have never had the people's mandate, simply because they have not contested as the primary candidate in any election. Did  Fashola win  any previuos elections before he became governor?

In Nigeria (at least for now), the deputy performs only the duties assigned to him by his boss, so GJ could as well leave him out of critical chores if he fails to show himself worthy.

For those expecting some big miracle in the few months left in this administration, please think again. Even with  very honest intentions , there is  only so little GJ can do now. When you consider the minimum time requirement  from initiation to harvest time for the critical areas we need him to look at, you will agree that much of the judgement can only be done in terms of direction and not necessarily tangible results.

As for those asking about what GJ achieved in Bayelsa, we need to be reminded that he spent just about a year as governor. I do not think he performed badly, expecially when one considers that within six months he had to get in the election fights .

I am learning to moderate my expectations from GJ, however i think his choice has some politcal value if he plans to run in 2011. I think it will be too tempting not to run. Forget all  dis becomerich theories.
Dont worry im cool as ice.  I've already adopted a sit-back- fold my arms- sip on ice tea attitude.  We shall all see how this unfolds.  For the sake of our dear country, i hope you are right.

I think Wole Soyinka is right on the money with his comments. Especially when he said." What I saw I found very unjust and sensationalist. What I saw was not an honest reportage. The problem is the title – it programmes the mind of the viewer in advance and sets the overall context" Perhaps BBC shouldve titled the show "welcome to the slums of Lagos"

Personally i enjoyed the show, the spirit of the characters impresses more than the images of slums.

I think it is lame of you to ask what i have done for my country.I know what i have done and many of you here have read and heard about my activities.I don't need to go into detail but those who are aware are aware. If you are debating with someone try to stay on point ,what has save nigeria group got to do with the nomination of ministers huh And i will use "we" and "us" because we all contribute to the backwardness of nigeria.

While i agree with your comment ,i disagree with the sentence bolded above.

Our problem is not education, if you look at the current government of Nigeria, you will find that over 70% of the people that make up our federal government are well educated. Some of them are even professors. The problem with these people is greed and lack of "forward thinking"

Bro i only have a Bsc in political science from LASU but i bet you my life that i can do a better job than all the presidents Nigeria has ever had. How am i so sure of this you may ask?

Well i am 30 years old and i own 4 successful companies which i run by myself and every year my companies profits grow by at least 30%.I am also well travelled and i have a lot of business ties worldwide. I am an idea driven guy, i don’t sit in one place and expect miracles to happen i read progressive books ,i blog ,i do spread trading online, i study financial markets and economies, i watch documentaries ,i study scientific gazettes, i monitor new technological developments all over the world.

I have a yearning to know everything and my drive has helped to me acquire the the kind of knowledge and skills i will never have acquired in a school. The problem with us Africans is that we think once we have acquired a PHD then we are perfect. Well that is just wrong.

You see a boy who has been a practicing farmer from the age of 16 will be smarter than a guy who has a PHD in agriculture because he is farm smart and he has tested the waters or you can use the term used in the military "battle tested"

The method of selecting ministers in Nigeria is crap, if i was Jonathan, what i will create a ministerial competition which only be open to young up and comng entrepreneurs in the Nigeria and i will select the best from every field to compete in the competition which will aired live for all to see. They will be tested with different task and eliminated from the race as they fail. For the final task the contestants will be asked to draw up a plan that will revolutionize their ministry. This plan will presented at a live debate where they will grill with question from both the judges and the studio audience.

A panel of judges preferably from the abroad will now select the best candidate and that candidate will be nominated the new minister for his/her particular ministry. This process will be similar to process used in the TV “Apprentice” to select the best professional. This way you will be able to select your freshest most talented candidate for the job. If this idea is taken seriously, a competition that will last 3 week can be created and experts hired from abroad to judge the candidates and select the best one.

To further strengthen the government and the ministries, once the new ministers are appointed, a new independent ministerial watch dog agency should be established that will monitor all the ministers. This agency should comprise of foreign professionals who are not prone to bribery and corruption. This agency will have the power to suspend a minister without the president’s intervention should he not be performing well. This will ensure transparency.

These watch dog agency will consist of former director, architects, doctors, financial forensic detective, it specialist e.t,c to deal and monitor each ministry. This agency will also be able to make recommendations to the ministers in area that the ministry is failing.
