Most of our things are now expensive, and we need something to be done," says businesswoman Esther Mbone.

With fewer dollars in reserve, the exchange rate to buy dollars with Kenyan shillings has increased, in some cases by more than 10%.

Kenya's declining forex reserves — which have hit 8-year lows — have also put the Kenyan shilling under intense pressure against other major currencies.

The government says there is no cause for alarm, saying there are still enough reserves of hard currency. But the Central Bank of Kenya has directed commercial banks to ration dollars to protect reserves.

Kenya: Dollar shortage hits motorists and traders
Cai Nebe | Andrew Wasike
16 hours ago16 hours ago

Kenya's economy is grappling with a shortage of foreign exchange reserves. As consumers feel the pain, bigger structural problems remain, and experts say relief might not come.

Kenya, the most dynamic economy in East Africa, has a shortage of dollars. Most fuel and oil importers claim they cannot import the commodities because of the dip in the supply of foreign currency.

This has led to fuel shortages in major places around the country especially the capital, Nairobi, where motorist Ibrahim Ngaumbua waits in a long line to fill up.

"This is the third petrol station that I have come to," he complains. "I am looking for fuel."

This Shell filling station has run out of regular petrol, but the more expensive V-Power fuel is still available.

"I just decided to fuel V-Power but I don't know where I can get the regular petroleum anymore," Ngaumbua told DW.

Domino effect
The dip in Kenya's foreign exchange (forex) reserves is being blamed for the current crunch hitting Kenyan consumers. The first to feel the pain are traders and motorists trying to fill up, with some filling stations running out of petrol and diesel, especially in Nairobi.

Because Kenya's oil and fuel importers use U.S dollars to buy fuel, the forex shortage has had a direct impact on the country's fuel supplies, and by extension, the country's supply chain.

But it has has also impacted essential imports such as medicine and food. With insufficient hard currency, both major and small-scale traders claim they cannot import goods.

Let me educate you

2015 elections was a contest between your two main political parties which the opposition party won so people had every right to jubilate.

But in this case the ruling party won hands down even in the face of all the difficulties the country is facing

Fast-forward
The 2023 election was keenly contested by your two main political parties and a third force (which is Labour Party)
This goes to show that your 2015 and 2023 elections are different on all counts.

For the first time a rulling party has retained the seat after 8years of rule so you don't expect people to jubilate like you did in 2015.
Do you want the losers to have BP and forment trouble?

You guys really need proper Political education from we Ghanaians.
You are right, even Tinubu's speech while receiving his certificate hinted that his supporters must be magnanimous in victory given the keen contest and the nature of the election whereby he won with only 36% of the votes. It would have been foolish to go around celebrating. That's like calling for more disunity and resentment.

One small correction however, PDP ruled for 16 years before the APC organised themselves by coming together as a strong unit to pull them out. Before then, Buhari was the Peter Obi of the North with millions of votes in every election but he continually lost in every election from 2003 to 2011 until he aligned with the other opposition parties in the South. Only then could they take out the very strong PDP.

In those days, just like the Peter Obi supporters of today, northerners used to wonder why their favourite man Buhari (given how popular he was in their eyes) continually lost, until they realized he could never win without aligning properly with the South (any of South-East or South-West was just okay). To take out the PDP in 2015, APC was then a combination of 4 major sects.

..Buhari's CPC (With the large northern following )

..Tinubu's ACN (the strongest Southern Block)

...Rochas Okorocha's APGA (the South-Eastern block)

....Old PDP ( consisting of former PDP Politicians, which was always going to be the weakest link going forward).

angry grin grin grin grin ;Dwhy are you withdrawing your support.I think ,ruto cant be blamed.what happened to ruto is like someone who entered in sinking ship.Ruto came at a wrong time.
Kenyan economy was already in huge debts, food production was already too low, wages were already too high, the value of Schilling was already sinking( remember few years back when imf said Kenya's currency was overvalued by over 30%)and dollar scarcity was already there.
I think any guy who could've beena president was going to be in the similar situation or even worse. Remember the fuel shortage of last year? And again the very similar thing is now coming back.Issues of food production is not a new thing, since independence kenya have struggled to feed herself, Ruto can't change that for these few months.
All those problems can't have a quick solutions. Honestly, you need at least a period of over 5 to 10 years to change those. But the nature of Kenyans and most africans is to love artificial stuff, they won't take that hard and disciplinary measures to rectify the situation for the sake of their coming generation.
This. A common trait of many Africans.

OBI Is challenging the process that led to the declaration, and the declaration itself.
So if the process is wrong according to the electoral law, then the declaration won't stand.
In other words, the declaration didn't follow the process which is the law. So it's null and void.
The process would have to be revisited for the declared results to stand and tally.
So the winner could be cancelled and the process revisited or the election entirely would be cancelled and reconducted according to the process/law, in addition to other irregularities in the election (coming very late to the election polling unit, snatching of BVAS and ballot boxes, mutilation of results, violence, and multiple intimidations and disenfranchisements.
Better heal fast and let's work together with Bola Tinubu the incoming President to move the country forward.

Obi is going to court just to satisfy you guys and keep his movement on till 2027. He knows he lost the election but he can't control his social media mob.

Even if there were irregularities, election cannot be cancelled again simply because of irregularities in some polling units because those irregularities affected all parties across the nation for the most part. Obi also would have to first prove that he beat Atiku before even thinking of Tinubu, he must also show data that proves he got minimum 25% in 24 states from 17 states.

After the close of poll, with election results not uploaded in real time, even a fool can change the election results and upload any figures on INEC'S iREV portal after the end of polls. And you are talking about results still uploading in INEC'S iREV portal more than 2 weeks after the election. Only a daft like you may wish that the results not uploaded at the INEC portal immediately after the close of poll, is authentic.

Guess why they say that Tinubu's supporters are senseless.
If that is the case, Labour Party had about 140,000 agents right? They must have also signed the original copies at the polling units. So all the Labour Party have to do is compile those signed results from their agents and compare with what's on the Irev portal even if the results are uploaded on Irev 100 years later.

Both APC and PDP were in their control rooms and got real time feedback from their agents at the polling units.

Subsaharan:
I just thought about the economic consequences of quantitative easing that Central banks took as a response to the recession caused by COVID and Central banks have been trying to manage the repercussion of that monetary policy. Inflation since then has been rampant largely attributed to excess market liquidity, global supply chain disruptions, and the Russia - Ukraine war.
The Federal reserve bank has opted for a conventional tool to curb inflation in the U.S., Increasing interest rates. this has caused major disruptions to the global economy from the scarcity of Fx in countries like Kenya to the chaos we just saw a couple of days ago in SVB.

Now I think CBN's method of managing the consequences of quantitative easing Is this cashless policy within 2 months, the CBN was able to successfully take ₦2trn worth of cash out of the economy slowing down inflation even with its unintended consequences to the economy, a little bit unconventional but very effective. The marginal rate hikes by the Fed would do nothing to slow down inflation at least not as quickly as they would like. Now they have to "invent" money to bail out SVB depositors to contain the situation.

But nobody knows what the consequences of the Supreme Court ruling would be. With a huge value of liquidity taken out of circulation, what would be the repercussions of a sudden release of liquidity back into the economy? What impact would it have on inflation? Wouldn't that amount to economic terrorism? Shouldn't National interest be prioritized? I suspect those questions to be answered in the coming weeks and months as I will be keenly watching events.
I already knew what the CBN was up to from time, this is why I largely ignored the political conspiracy theories that arose. The problem now is: Why the terrible implementation?

Couldn't they have done it in a way that we didn't have to get to the point we are now whereby we are using naira to buy naira and other burdens it brought?

I think the argument of who wins and how the election was won shouldn't be a problem. The problem is transparency and uploading of original result. In a sane country, INEC should be demanded to bring forth all the original results their staff submitted to them while all the political parties will bring forth the originals their agents submitted to them. No mutilation should be entertained. Why is INEC finding it difficult to be very transparent, at least, this critical time. Why are they refusing the BVAS inspection, uploading of results and bringing forth the results of the disputed areas? My brother, something is really very wrong and if we play emotional games, it will consume us in future. It's better we stand firm and correct it now
First let the LP polling agents bring out all the results they signed at the polling units. Abi una nor get agents ni? Parties had their own control rooms with constant feedback from their agents.

Is it tinubu that will increase the GDP or the citizens who are motivated enough to work for their country?

You think citizens that believe their choice of leadership has been denied them will be motivated to work for their country?

I believe in the national government saving money if savings is for a purpose other than itself. For a government that prints its own currency, to save that currency merely for saving’s sake is to accumulate worthless paper.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu----2014.

I wonder if Tinubu still holds this view though. For me, saving dollars in an excess crude account is the only wise thing to do but saving naira in a bank makes no sense.
