Commissioner for Transport will have his work cut out with the current traffic situation in Lagos.

I hope these appointees build on Fashola's achievement and make Lagos a state to be emulated by other states.

OldJohn:
grin grin do you think if they were being taken care of by the government, they will be out there sweeping?? I don't see the need of putting youths on the road to be sweeping for 10000. That's a waste of manpower and intelligence especially. They should help youths with agricultural programs or more intellectual challenging programs not wasting quality time of your life sweeping roads
Mr. Man, don get me wrong. We are here to talk about old people employed as street sweepers. Nowhere did I say youths should be employed as street sweepers.

Na wa Oo. Does their being old affect their effectiveness? These are the kind of people that need these kind of jobs.. my opinion though
Just to ask you are question, how many old people (60 and above) can do a strenuous job like sweeping expressways or dual carriage ways filled with crazy drivers?

In a sane clime, these grandmas shouldn't be working but be taken care of by the government.
PoliticsRe: Why We Have To Allow The Naira To Be Devalued Pt 1 by GenOrumov: 1:00am On Oct 08, 2015
@ laudate

Its great to learn that you too are intelligent and well informed against portfolio investors, bankers, currency speculators, some manufacturers and greedy capitalists who have had their source of earning MORE MONEY blocked for the time being.

Imagine the government agreeing to devalue the naira and thus set a date for the commencement of that policy, you will see that these bunch of capitalists mentioned above will go ahead to buy all the dollars in the market in anticipation of the windfall that they will benefit from. The anticipation of the devaluation exercise was part of the reasons why dollar was so high to the naira some months ago.

@ Realdeals

"but government is not just about business but protection of the interest of its citizen especially the larger populace"

You couldn't have said it any better. Thumbs up.

@ Hakagure

My point is before we devalue our currency, we should diversify our economy so as to ensure what happened during Babaginda's regime doesn't happen to Nigerians again. So until we can't postpone the evil day no more (we won't even get to that evil day if we start that diversification today), I support that we continue to use our dollar reserve (dollar that won't even enter my own hands but will end up being looted by politicians and their croonies) to protect the naira.
PoliticsRe: Why We Have To Allow The Naira To Be Devalued Pt 1 by GenOrumov: 1:13am On Oct 07, 2015
Sorry I didn't bother to read the whole article except the ninth paragraph which listed the effects of pegging a country's currency as against other currencies because I still stand by Buhari's decision not to devalue the Naira.

Pardon my ignorant view. I am not an economist but you don't have to be an economist or be learned to figure out that Nigerians (the middle class and the poor which are in the majority) will be doomed if that happens. The rich will get richer while the poor will get poorer.

For God's sake, we all know that devaluation is the right thing to do in a sane clime where "all things being equal" but you and I know that all things are not equal in Nigeria e.g 2+2 is not 4

The effects you listed above let me take for instance - drives up cost of capital
As an entrepreneur myself, I feel the pinch of having to spend more in my quest to grow my business but from my own point of view, that will be nothing compared to the hits I will receive if the naira is devalued as a result of the spiral effect of that decision. This further goes to buttress my point that the rich will get richer while the poor will get poorer because as a business man trying to stay in business, I will transfer the burden from my business to the consumers. While I get rich, they will get more poor(er)

*i have other sentimental reasons why the naira shouldn't be devalued but tired to be compelled to go beyond this point at the moment.

Parting shot - Before the naira is subjected to a debate whether to be devalued or not, the government should have put other things in motion e.g the diversification of our source of income from crude oil alone to other things.

sweettease:
No, they won't. I recently got a new one because my old birth certificate was mishandled and it wasn't as neat as I'd want it to... The size wasn't up to A4 but it's an exact replica of the one my sister has been using from birth. They are usually in charge of recording birth and death so they have easy access to the required document and stamps.
Maybe you were lucky but I know someone that went to Somolu LG, Lagos State and got a fake one from those hustlers at the gate and guess what.... She was denied a visa by the British high commission just for that.
Anyone that wants to go to any government office should for documents of this nature should ensure they speak with someone seated in the office and not those hanging around the entrance to the building lest you fall into the hands of scammers.

PoliticsRe: Governor Ambode Is Overwhelmed: Cannot Run Lagos State by GenOrumov:
stevecantrell:
From the looks of things the remnant of disgruntled Fashola's men that survived the 'cleansing' exercise seem to be sabotaging the efforts of the new governor. The low morale among state workers also, seems to be a fallout from the owed salary arrears.

Money answereth all things. I pray Ambode gets the money to run Lagos, one way or another.
I agree we should give him more time. He must not disappoint us.

@ chinchum, I agree wit you too. We always lampooned Lastma because it seemed they were too high handed. But their presence under Fashola brought sanity.

Unfortunately, the Lastma under Ambode is like that of Rivers State. The traffic jam in Lagos is now the same thing in Rivers.

Ambode's model of tracing offenders home is the way forward provided the technology is on ground. I think this proposed approach is the cause of Lastma's inefficiency. They are intentionally sabotaging the governor's effort because there won't be side runs for them under this new system.

It will be 4 Months at the END of September/ beginning of October.
Perhaps there is NO money, that's why.

Ambode has nothing to gain holding up poor workers' salaries. I guess the last administration left the state in CASH CRUNCH.

Nice try, Mr Fasholite.

Maybe we need to probe the last admin but that could prove counter productive.
Ambode needs to seriously wake up!

It seems Fashola's shoes are too big for him to occupy with the current look of things. I agree it may be the cash crunch but he needs to not lower the bar Fashola raised.
The most annoying is the uselessness (permit me to use that word) of Lastma. I used up to an hour just to make a U-turn at Mile 12 this evening and guess what, it was those silly Danfo drivers and do you know the most astonishing thing, Lastma officials were just a few metres from where these buses were waiting and didn't do anything to correct them.

I have a serious headache now and I blame Ambode. True talk!

Saraki seemed to have won the battle but looks like he will lose the war.

Winning Round 1 is not an achievement but lasting till Round 12 and going on to win the bout is the achievement. Its left to be seen if he will scale past this Round 2.

And for senators that want to decamp to PDP because of Saraki, all I have to say to them is I pity them. They better leave him to face this fight alone before he drags them too to an early political grave.

I think the judge over-reach himself by his comments and actions, the court is a public place and not the judge's home while companies are private properties
Even though I'm not knowledgeable about the workings of a courthouse, what I'm sure of is that the judge is the head of a courthouse therefore whatever the judge says there is final.
You do not have to have been to a courthouse before you know that you cannot just go in there and take pics and videos without permission (because of security reasons) despite there being a public place.
As no man can come into your house to film it without your permission is the same way you can't go to a courthouse and behave in any manner you like.

Who told you that all the companies in Nigeria are listed on Nigeria Stock Exchange. Is Ota farm listed on NSE? Do you know the company and similar ones has shareholders?
Pardon me. I know not all companies in Nigeria are listed on the Stock Exchange.
Yes the company was shut down in 2008 but while it still existed it did business in hundreds of million dollars. Were the directors not paid off? Whether existing or not, whether it worth is less than a tissue paper or not the issue, did PMB declared it? The law says he should declare his asset and liability.
if you say he should declare his asset and you unearthed an asset that was shut down in 2008, then how can he declare in 2015 what was shut down 7 years ago and doesn't exist any longer ?

My point is how many more of such is not known to the public?
This was not your point when you quoted me the first time.

Don't be an olodo. I expected you to give me the total value of the listed stock that is even if the company still exists and still listed on the stock exchange.

Take for instance, Just because IBB has a share in let's say Mobil and due to the drop in oil prices, the share price of Mobil will not drop just because almighty "IBB" has shares in it abi?
Is that what dictates the share price of companies?

It is a lesson to everyone. Do not borrow money. Do not pledge your property for a consumption loan. The bankers who lent you the money make it impossible for you to pay back and will eventually acquire it at give-away price. This has traditionally been the trick of the Jews.
Borrowing isn't bad. Borrowing for a consumption loan is what is bad as you have rightly said.

Aren't you aware that it is money you use in making money. Go and ask Dangote. All the cement plants he's opening all over africa, do you think its his personal money he's using? The ability to pay as at when due is what should be considered when borrowing.

It amazes me how you think we should just take all the elderly ones with solid experience, send them home despite having something relevant to offer no matter how small it is.

What you should be advocating for is more opportunities for the youths, top positions for the youths that merit it and not "man no man" system that is currently in place.
