Roda94: Well here in London there seems to be more of an interest for Yoruba teenagers wanting to speak Yoruba well. I'd say in the next few years those that speak fluently will increase significantly. The question should be is the quality of the language depleting? As Titilayo rightly said, few of us know what window is in Yoruba. We have become so used to peppering Yoruba with traces of English thus in the process forgetting what some words are in Yoruba. I am optimistic however that the only way on is up and there will be many people who become more fluent and hopefully in the process the quality of the language becomes better. As for extinction? Roda94: As for extinction? Yoruba could never be distinctWith the way things are going, Yoruba as a distinct language is facing extinction, happening surreptitiously. It's a blare fact that Yoruba folks down here communicate with each other in Yoruba but always speak and compel their children to respond in English. Another instance is the fact that most Yorubas of today prefer to name their babies with foreign names mostly Jewish and English, ignorantly ebbing the Yorubaness in them by throwing a given Yoruba name to the back. I once asked for the native name of someone I met, very dark in complexion male who so proud he wasn't given any native name, as his first, middle and surname are all English. You see, with this sort of pattern trending, it's only a matter of time before it reaches 89% extinction or worst as it is - vitiated. The Yoruba movies who think they are helping are infact one of the instrument jeopardizing the soon-to-vanish language. My attitude towards the Igbo dominated so called Nigerian films used to be the same for Yoruba movies until recently, however as before, still poorly directed, overused cliches, weak plot, unrealistic and predictable story and worst of it all, they both relish profit in the bastardization and demonization of our cultures and traditions, both of which are in tandem with our indigenous language. Check out the so called Yoruba films in respect to their error prone subtitles which will ofcourse confuse and mis-teach the young growing ones and other non-Yorubas interested in the language, that aside, why should it be called a Yoruba movie when all the time, its actors and actresses can't make a complete sentence in Yoruba without employing two or more English words? Is it that we don't have the equivalent of 'but' in Yoruba? There are even two; 'sugbon' and 'amo' but one frequently hear statements like “Chief mofe ran yi but se mope moyin school lowo, mi deni fe ki education mi lo wa affected”. Don't misconstrue me, as I don't mean extinction in the 'dinosaur' sense. What I'm trying to say is Yoruba as an ethnic identity may eventually become de-concatenated from its original true language. Evidence of this is occurring on daily basis, everywhere in Yorubland, it is so subtle that most speaking it don't even realize it. I know this because I'm sensitive to it all the time. Couples of months ago, at a buddy's place, there was this young lady who visited Nigeria for the first, with her Yoruba mum both from Germany. Her mum could speak Yoruba, but she could neither speak nor understood Yoruba at all. Even her English is poor. You see what I'm talking about. These reasons and many more are what made an high profile institution whose name I can't recall for now, classified the Yoruba language among five or so other lingua francas that are fast wiping out, given to which became the sole reason why those 5 Americans decide to major in the study of Yoruba language at the University of Ibadan. Those linguistic experts do observe and analyse these traits periodically. Now to prove their extinction theory right, let me test you. Hope you are ready... Thrash Metal and Death Metal are not synonyms of Heavy Metal as i see you describe it as Heavy/Thrash/Death Metal Thrash and Death Metal are sub-genres to the genre of music called Heavy Metal. Up till now I still find it quite hard to relate to metal music in general. BTW, Cypress Hill, to me lack luster, infact their wacky counterpart Limp Bizkit are a tad better by style and delivery than them, though over punkish. I mean, after buying their bones and skull album, I felt stupid to have been swooned by the glossy artwork of their cover, na growsy tracks full the 2 CDs, original album for that matter. D tin pain me dat time I no fit break am. Ehem! Back to the Head Bangers, So ma guy, yarn me how una take dey feel those noise and growling for metals? Aside from few of their beautiful application as soundtracks to action movie scenes, car racing games, wrestling jingles and wrestler's intro into the ring, how does one or how do you feel metal music? I bought Metallica DVD, which I still do have, very clean, d tin never scratch cos I no dey hear am. I have tried and tried. E no be like Linky and 3daysGrace or A7X or Adema etc. And also, I know some of these 'mentalo' deliver sensible messages just like my hard rock bands, but how do they expect listener to hear when their instrumentals is so chaotically noisy such that it blots out their lyrics? And come to think of it, don't you think they ought to be Chaos Metal? If not, maybe we should start it. |

Too Hard rock Like most of the tracks from artiste/bands I listed^ who rarely compose soft, melodious strings except for Linkin Park who now do that a lot now. Heavy/Thrash/Death metal Una know them na. Dem de tok sense o, but d noise 3 much. Mastodon, Childeren of Bodom. Cradle of Filth, Korn etc . This sub-genre of rock is what an average Nigeria thinks of, when the word 'rock music' is mentioned. I've asked females before severally, do you listen to rock music? And it mostly: "ehn! God forbid, I don't listen to all those devilish music, me I like Celine Dion and westlife". Though, that was back then, I wouldn't know about now since I've stopped bothering to ask. One day I'm going to write a piece about Nigerians mis-reaction to rock music as a chapter within the topic: A Critical Look of the Nigerian Entertainment Industry. BTW I like this soft rock track by Kasabian or so, the track is: Processed Beat. You all should check it out, very cool and sweeeeeeet. |

I still don't understand why many of you both on NL and out here, like mild rock trax? As for me I listen mostly to H A R D R O C K, cos they fuel my imaginations and fires my creativity. Mine are: Nirvana Smells Like Teen Spirit only, the rest na noise. Linkin Park 90% of all tracks in Hybrid Theory, Reanimation & Meteora are the best Adema Giving In, [The Way You Like It, Planets, Cold and Jaded Foo Fighter Pretenders only, the test na noise. But, however as it seems, it's like many of the deities whom are native to various ethnicity, possess higher level of authority within themselves. For instance, Ayilala, who is native and unique to certain locale, and responds to cases within the premise of, mostly indignation, can affect any human irrespective of race, ethnicity and tribe. But, since she's an Orisha would be less powerful if compared to the NB: if I were a Idoma I'd say Idoma Advanced Sciences.
