I remember two years ago during the nationwide strike following the fuel increment, while many Nigerians took to the streets to stage protests, an even greater number sat in their houses, behind computer screens and drew ridiculous pictures with even more ridiculous, albeit hilarious captions. While their counterparts in the Middle East the previous year bled and died during the Arab spring, Nigerians conducted their own 'Naija spring' on the internet, circulating funny pictures and memes as their own contribution to the struggle.
In other countries, when a government official goofs publicly, the citizens immediately demand accountability. Not so in Nigeria. After Mr Anselm disgraced the NSCDC on national and international television (Channels tv), Nigerians immediately responded by flooding the internet with rib cracking memes and caricatures, even going to the extent of producing branded tshirts of our 'Oga-at-the-top'.
Whenever you see the cartoon of a woman in wearing an awkward gele, with a puffy, scrunched up face, streaming eyeglasses, and white handkerchief, you immediately know who it is. Patience Jonathan has been immortalised.
The one that really got me puzzled is this new Ebola inspired craze. One would think that something as serious as an incurable disease that kills within days would provoke sober reflection on the feeble state of mankind, but NO, the opposite is the case. I have seen so many silly jokes about the Ebola virus on BBM, Nairaland, facebook and other social networking forums. Must everything be a joke?
I voiced my observations to some of my colleague and was promptly laughed at. While one said "wo, a le para wa jor'' (we can't kill ourselves jor), another remarked on his facebook wall: "Ebola! Your fada. No matter how you strong your face reach, we must break you down". This dude followedea this statement with some very funny memes on his wall. ( I don't know the jobless people that come up with all those funny pictures).
Smh. No wonder the international community can never take us seriously.

oladapolif: From day one, I have never believed this virus was natural and I have been following the news and waiting to see where its going to end. Now, I am watching CNN and its just came right in front of me, that they have secret medicine for the virus, now its working the American patient, when the American patient is the first American patient and first patient on American soil. Do the math, a bastard white created this virus and have the cure. Why did the states wait this long until their own is infected before releasing this cure?? If its not created by them, why cure within a week

I have been saying for so long that the whole Ebola hysteria is being deliberately generated by the white man to disadvantage and us in some way.

I predicted that we may be denied visas.

They may even degrade our trade with the rest of the world (and stupidly ) we may be panicked into breaking trading relationships with other African countries.

Rabies is more deadly than Ebola!

Influenza is more contagious than Ebola!

Upto 500,000 die annually from Influenza.

Why are there no hysteria from BBC and CNN about Rabies and Influenza?

Ebola was first discovered in 1967. Ever since then the west had begun serious research and what could bring an end to the dreaded disease. They don't wait till everything is damaged before they start running around like our leaders do in Africa (pre-occupying themselves with embezzlement of funds). US in particular has been preparing themselves for this and this is the result of their hard hard work. The provision of a powerful serum to deal with the virus. You don't insult them but you plead that they extend this favor to Africa. If they decide to behave like Russia and some countries who don't care about 3rd world countries, how many of us do you think will be left in Africa. Thank God for America at least we all know that there is a serum somewhere.

donnypool: Africans don't listen, the thought of an average african mind is "Nor be only me this ebola go kill, i must not go down alone" because ppl who are sick should at least go to the hospital themselves, but no, they must infect their family members and friends first.
Ebola is not easily contagious as we thought it is, because research shows that if the symptoms is not fully manifested the virus is powerless and it can be taken care of if detected earlier, but no our stu..pid superstitious believe will make us sit at home till the dying minute thereby infecting all our closest friends before sicking help.
