As a proud Igbo son and Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I am glad to see our illustrious sons and daughter making headway in the latest appointments into the Federal Executive Cabinet.

During my discussions with some of the Ministerial nominees after their successful screening exercises at the Senate Chambers, I expressed staunch confidence in the versatility of experience and leadership that they are poised to bring to bear in their respective Ministries and urged them to distinguish themselves as worthy ambassadors of the South East and our country in general by promoting Regional Economic Development and political stability.

Nairaland GeneralA Case Study Of Tyre Burst Incidents In The Global Aviation Sector. by grassrootsig(op): 10:06pm On Jul 24, 2019
A CASE STUDY OF TYRE BURST INCIDENTS IN THE GLOBAL AVIATION SECTOR.

Aircraft tyres, like any other rubber product, are sometimes affected by sunlight, extreme weather conditions and wide range of factors. Most modern airlines have at one time or the other, suffered tyre burst mishaps during takeoff or landing.

However, Airline tyre burst occurrence is not a sign of incompetence or compromise of air safety standards. As a matter of fact, most of these airlines have continued to wax stronger and remain leading air carriers in the global aviation sector.

*GLOBAL CASES OF AIRLINES TYRE MISHAPS.*

Nairaland General250 Words Assessment Of Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah's Performance In One Month. by grassrootsig(op): 2:23pm On Jul 24, 2019
250 Words Assessment of Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah's performance in one month.

By Ebuka Onyekwelu.

In the last one month as the Senator representing Anambra South, Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah has demonstrated what it means to hit the ground running.
First of all, he infiltrated the high powered politics of National Assembly leadership, then now, he has shown to be fully prepared, dedicated and capable for the job he was sent to do in Abuja. A good lawmaker must be conversant with the politics of the legislature and also must make worthy contributions in parliamentary deliberations. This two must go together, if a lawmaker must succeed in his task.

Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah has been making exceptional contributions at the floor of the Nigerian Senate and there is little doubt as to the intent and purposes of his very laudable contributions.
Certainly, many people will be surprised, but if you have met and discussed with Sen. Ubah, you will know he is vast and knowledgeable.

I also observed that Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah seems to have mastered the art of politics and the Nigerian brand to be precise, much better than he did before. I have seen some strategic and masterful political moves from his side and I know there is serious business going on.

One can also see that his focus so far, is not in doubt.
I am delighted that Anambra South is duly represented in the 9th Senate and it is not business as usual. Sen. Ubah is not just speaking but also making quality inputs and I extol most profoundly, his performance so far.

Nairaland GeneralDownstream inefficiency, Ifeanyi Ubah, Okoji & others call for subsidy removal by grassrootsig(op):
SENATOR (DR.) PATRICK IFEANYI UBAH's VIEWPOINTS ON TODAY'S PLENARY AT THE SENATE.

On the floor of the Senate today being July 23rd 2019, I co-sponsored a motion on “Exiting Fuel Subsidy: Ensuring Self-Sufficiency in Domestic Refining of Petroleum Products”. This motion was sponsored by Senator Oko Rose Okoji of Cross River North.

In my contribution, I advocated for the urgent need to invite major stakeholders in the downstream sector such as;the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN), Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria(IPMAN), Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association(DAPPMA) and Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) to discuss the ideal approach to Liberalization of the downstream sector which can help eliminate the N1.7trillion subsidy payment currently incurred in the process of massive fuel importation. Full liberalization of the sector would address inflation, eradicate corruption and ameliorate the economic uncertainty that has characterized our nation.

Furthermore, I gave an analysis noting that the citation of 5 domestic modular refineries with a “$1billion support fund” from the Federal Government would eliminate the endemic fuel importation problem we are facing in Nigeria. In my analysis, I stated that each modular refinery out of the 5 will be collectively run and managed by 10 indigenous investors with proven capacity under a “10 year repayment plan” in which these 50 companies will mortgage their assets as guarantees for repayment of the loan. This pattern if adopted, will elevate these 50 indigenous marketers from marketing to manufacturing, hereby creating employment, eliminating corruption and increasing efficiency through innovation and healthy competition.

I further reminded the Senate that it would be very difficult for 10 indigenous companies to collectively engage in any shady deal that can jeopardize their hard earned assets. I noted that this strategy if adopted, will generate an increased revenue of N250-300 billion for Nigerians monthly and aid the Government in the actualization of the N30,000 minimum wage benchmark.

I also noted with dismay the sardonic fact that Nigeria as the “Giant of Africa” still gives crude oil to Coted'voire to refine for us. Conclusively, I also emphasized the need to adopt the “Ship to Shore” refinery pattern (which has been adopted by Dangote) as against the “pipeline to refinery” model which has proved ineffectual and disastrous as a result of incessant pipeline attacks and lack of transparency and accountability on the actual amount of crude oil sent and received.

SENATOR IFEANYI UBAH AND HIS IGBO ECONOMIC AGENDA IN THE NINTH ASSEMBLY

Why Nigeria must protect local carriers

The sloppy performance of Nigerian airlines on international routes is gaining currency within the aviation sector with concerned stakeholders pushing for a raft of protectionist policies to sustain local operators on the global stage.

Although, Nigeria does not rank among the world’s developed economies, it’s citizens nonetheless are grouped among nations contributing to air transport passengers traffic growth across major international airports in the world.

A recent data on passenger movement released by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) said there were 227,834 aircraft flights that moved in and out of Nigeria in 2018 carrying an estimated 15.2 million passengers.

Without a doubt, Nigerians travel a lot. A population of over 200 million people with limited job opportunities has seen Nigerians migrating more than any other African nationals in search of greener pastures in various  developed countries in Europe, America, and Asia. These economic migrants – alongside those going for academic, sports, diplomatic, trade, medical and tourism purposes – drive the huge population of Nigerian traffic coming in and out of the country’s international airports. Sadly, with the absence of a vibrant national or flag carrier, the bulk of the Nigerian passengers are carried by foreign airlines with the attendant capital flight.

Stakeholders complaints
Recent data released by the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), indicated that foreign airlines repatriate about $3billion out of Nigeria annually. But in raising the alarm, the greater worry for the local airline owners is the havoc done the value of the local currency with the repatriation of  such huge funds  by foreign airlines.
According to the Chairman of the AON, Capt. Nogie Meggison, it would be impossible for the government desiring to diversify its economy and boost the aviation sector contribution to national GDP to achieve its goal in an environment where about $3billion (monies generated by Nigerians) is lost annually to foreign airlines and their bankers. Something ought to be done to halt the slide, Meggison said.

It is a view also shared by the Aviation Round Table (the think-tank of the industry). It’s President, Gabriel Olowo, called for urgent steps be taken by the Federal Government to protect the local airline industry.

Among other challenges , the AON and the ART identified the multiple designation of routes and frequencies assigned foreign airlines operating into Nigeria, the failure of the government to assist local airlines weather the storms of international aero-politics, and the exorbitant and multiple taxes paid by local airlines as factors hindering their competitiveness at the international aero-market.
The aero-politics angle
According to the Chairman of the Airline Operators of Nigeria, Captain Nogie Meggison, the issue of aero politics led to early exit of most of Nigeria’s local airlines on international routes.

*“Operators like Bellview were frustrated out of the India market; Arik Air was given a distant parking bay in Dubai at the far end of the terminal; Medview was frustrated out of the London route by sheer regulatory technicalities and so called safety deficiencies,* unfair slot allocation, exorbitant airport charges, levies and fees,” said Meggison.
“There are all forms of excuses  mainly to discredit the Nigerian  airline as a means of edging them out of the route in order to get rid of the competition posed to their own local operators on the route and to protect their own,” Meggison said.

It was a view corroborated by the Chairman/CEO of Air Peace, Mr. Allen Onyema, who also sees ‘aero-politics’ as one critical issues the Federal Government has to take serious if the problem of capital flight and poor participation of Nigerian airlines in the international market is to be tackled.
“Most countries see Nigeria as a huge market that offers them the opportunity to make so much money and they can only do this if their airlines operate into Nigeria (as a monopoly) without a Nigerian carrier flying in reciprocity,” said Onyema.
“You find a situation where some countries do everything to block a Nigerian airline flying into their country. *They impose all manner of exorbitant charges to discourage Nigerian airlines;they charge you for in-bound and out-bound flights, but when they come to Nigeria they are given red-carpet reception. In fact, our own people in Nigeria assist them to get what they want even to the detriment of Nigerian carriers. And when you complain they say they are creating more options for Nigerian passengers. But in reality, there is no Nigerian carrier on such a route offering any competition.*

This must change. There is no reason to give them what they are not ready to give us. The government of Nigeria should reciprocate these charges to serve as a deterrent and protect Nigerian airlines,” Onyema added.

Multiple routes designation
The move by officials of the Federal Ministry of Transport to grant a third frequency to Emirates to fly out of Lagos is already infuriating stakeholders in the aviation sector with the Nigerian Senate calling for a review of the BASA agreements signed by the Federal Government given the lopsidedness that tends to favour foreign airlines.

According to *Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who moved the motion for the Nigerian Senate to review the BASA agreements with other countries, continuous offer of multiple routes and frequencies by ministry officials will never allow foreign airlines to interline or code-share with local airlines as it is done in other countries.* Ubah, said an emerging local airline like Air Peace will be heading for a financial crash on the newly launched Lagos-Dubai route if a third daily frequency is given to a gulf airline to fly from the Lagos-Dubai route and mop up at a much reduced fare passengers that ought to fly with the local carrier.
“You find a situation where because Air Peace is now going to Dubai and Sharjah, some gulf airlines have started a promo to offer ticket fares that ordinarily won’t take a passenger from Lagos to Owerri and this ticket also comes with free accommodation,” explained a top official of a local airline calling for a review of existing BASA deals.
“Nigerians don’t know that this is a trap. They are very happy. They want to give them a third frequency to fly from Lagos, plus the one frequency they have in Abuja. The target is to run the Nigerian airline out of the route. They are ready to incur the short-term loses. But once they succeed, the next thing they do is to jack up the airfares immediately.  And by the time they are operating as a monopoly, Nigerians will be paying even more. That’s the trick; that’s the danger of allowing multiple entries and frequencies to foreign airlines which they can’t allow in their countries.

*....as Senator Uche Ekwunife, Stella Oduah and myself make case for erosion menace in Anambra.*

Today being Thursday, July 18, 2019, I co-sponsored a motion presented by Senator Uche Ekwunife of Anambra Central on the “Devastating storm in Obosi, Nkpor and Oraukwu communities of Anambra State.

The motion which noted with deep concern, the devastating storm that storm place during the weekend at Obosi, Nkpor Oraukwu Communities in Idemili North LGA of Anambra State which destroyed a lot of homes and rendered residents of that area homeless. Shops, markets, roads and properties worth billions of Naira were destroyed. The residents were forced to flee and take refuge in neighboring towns and villages.

Having identified Anambra State as the worst hit South Eastern State by the erosion menace with over 1000 active erosion sites existing in the state, the motion also noted that unless immediate steps are taken to control the widening erosion gullies, the residents of the communities will continue to be exposed to greater risk of loss of life and properties.

The motion raised further concerns about recent reports and studies indicating that over 20% of the total landmass of Anambra State is being devastated by flooding and gully erosion.

Desirous of taking immediate remedial measures to check the scourge of this erosion menace in affected communities, Senator Ekwunife presented two prayers urging the Senate to:

1. Request the Ecological Fund Office to immediately visit the affected areas, provide remedy and advance solutions to this erosion menace.

2. Direct the National Emergency Management Agency to provide relief materials and all other support as may be necessary to mitigate the damages suffered by these communities.

In contribution to Senator Ekwunife’s motion,
I commended her for sponsoring a very detailed and apt motion which could not have come at a better time than now. However, I reminded the hallowed chamber that last week I made mention of the biggest motorcycle and auto parts market in West Africa; Nkwo Nnewi market which is situated along 100 Foot Road Nnewi in a neighboring Senatorial zone next to that of Senator Ekwunife. I noted with worry that the market is currently threatened by the same erosion menace, thereby forcing traders to offload their containers far away from their warehouses/shops, leaving them with no other option than to use wheelbarrows to convey their goods to the market as a result of the erosion stricken road.

I humbly requested the addition of a prayer requesting a delegation from the Ecological Fund Office to be sent down to Anambra South to have a firsthand view and assessment of: *100 Foot Road Nnewi erosion site, Ekwulobia- Oko-Umunze- Ibinta Road, Agulu-Nanka gully erosion site, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (Awka and Nnewi campuses) as well as Umueze erosion site Uga-Aguata and others* to witness the deplorable state of infrastructure and untold suffering men and women go through as a result of the pervasive erosion menace.

The Senate accordingly adopted the prayers of the motion and also resolved to send a delegation from the Ecological Fund Office and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) down to Anambra Central, South and North to visit areas struck by the erosion to witness the severity of damage caused by erosion so as to mobilize funds, technical assistance and expertise required to tackle the problem. menace in Anambra.*

Nairaland GeneralIn line with my promise to keep my constituency abreast of my daily activities. by grassrootsig(op):
In line with my promise to keep my constituency abreast of my daily activities, here are the viewpoints of my legislative activities yesterday, Tuesday, 16th of July, 2019.

On the floor of the Senate, I co-sponsored an urgent motion which was presented by Senator (Dr.) Patrick Ayo Akinyelure of Ondo Central on the “State of insecurity in the Nation and gruesome murder of Mrs. Funke Olakunrin; daughter of Pa Reuben Fasoranti the NonAgenarian leader of Afenifere on July 12, 2019 by some armed gang and kidnappers along Akure-Ore Lagos Highway”.

Having noted the rising level of insecurity in our nation and the deplorable incessant killings and kidnappings of people by some criminals through incessant bush attacks on our major highways. The Senate expressed deep concerns that these frequent insurgencies may soon result into breakdown of laws and order or etho-communal clashes in the southern part of the country if adequate measures are not taken to fish out the perpetrators of these criminal acts.

The Senate also noted that despite the assurances received from security agencies, that they are on top of the security situations; emphasizing on the fact that the existing security measures in place have not effectively and satisfactorily addressed the security challenges in many parts of the country.

In view of these points raised, The Senate accordingly resolved to observe a “one minute” silence in honour of Mrs. Funke Olakunrin and many other Nigerians known and unknown who died in similar circumstances in recent times across the country. The Senate also resolved to draw the attention of the Federal Government to the continued rising level of insecurity and tension in different parts of the nation, as well as urge the Government to tackle the prevailing problem of insecurity which has created serious issues of social protection with its attendant effect on the business cycle and the nation’s economy. This is not far fetched from the fact that no foreign investor would be interested in moving their funds into high risk areas where there are incidents of major breakdown of law and order.

The Senate also resolved to urge the Service Chiefs to urgently review the scope and re-assess the operational roles of the security forces to effectively combat the different criminal activities in the country especially the recent increase in highway attacks. The Senate also urged the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FEMA) to accelerate action in maintaining potholes on major potholes on Federal highways across the country where most of the perpetrators of this evil act of kidnapping and attacks on innocent citizens always hide to kill at will.

Conclusively, The Senate urged State Governors and Local Government chairmen to cooperate and collaborate with needed logistics in their respective states and local governments areas in this respect, while directing the Budget Office, The Senate Committees on Appropriation and Defence when constituted, to ensure that necessary funds are allocated in the 2020 Appropriation bill for the operations of joint patrol of Armed Forces and other security agencies.

Nairaland GeneralSenate Worried Over The Infrastructural Decadence Ravaging Our Mkts/industries by grassrootsig(op): 1:58pm On Jul 12, 2019
NIGERIAN MEMBERSHIP OF THE AFRICAN CONTINENTAL FREE TRADE AGREEMENT (ACFTA) SIGNED BY NIGERIA’S PRESIDENT; MUHAMMADU BUHARI LAST WEEKEND.

RE: THE URGENT NEED TO LOOK INTO THE INFRASTRUCTURAL DECADENCE RAVAGING THE NKWO NNEWI COMMERCIAL CLUSTER, TRADE FAIR COMPLEX ALONG LAGOS-BADAGRY EXPRESSWAY AND OSHODI APAPA EXPRESSWAY WHCH LEADS TO NIGERIA’S BIGGEST SEAPORTS - TINCAN AND APAPA WHARF.

On the floor of the Senate yesterday, being Thursday, 11th of July, 2019, I made a case for Nkwo Nnewi motorcycle and auto spare parts market, Lagos Trade Fair complex and the deteriorated Oshodi-Apapa Expressway which leads to Nigeria’s biggest seaports (Tincan and Wharf).

In my contribution to the motion presented by Sen. Barau Jibrin which I also cosponsored, I made a case for the protection of large markets and industrial clusters such as;

1. Trade Fair Complex situated along the Lagos-Badagry expressway comprising of Balogun Business Association (BBA), Auto Spare Parts and Machinery Dealers Association (ASPAMDA) and 16 other market associations where over 300,000 businessmen and women engage in commercial activities daily.
2. Nkwo Nnewi motorcycle and auto spare parts market situated along 100 foot road, Nnewi which is the biggest motorcycle and auto spare parts market in West Africa. The road which has been destroyed by erosion has made life difficult for traders as they are forced to offload their containers far away from their warehouses/shops and are left with no other option than to use wheelbarrows in conveying their goods to the market. This ugly trend has negatively affected a huge number of traders.
3. Oshodi Apapa Expressway which leads to Nigeria’s main seaports; Tincan and Apapa Wharf which I have in the past and on several occasions, offered to proffer solutions that will end the traffic gridlock.

What is ACFTA?

ACFTA is a trade agreement aimed at opening up markets within Africa, where African countries intertrade with 90% tariff reduction as well as free movement of goods and services across the African continent.

As part of my recommendations, I urged the Federal Government to give urgent attention to the erosion stricken 100 foot road that leads to Nkwo-Nnewi market located in Nnewi North Local Government of Anambra State. Having elaborately reminded the Senate that Nkwo Nnewi is the biggest motorcycle and auto spare parts market in West Africa as well as the centrepiece of the Igbo Economy, I beckoned on the Senate President; His Excellency, Dr. Ahmad Lawan to send a delegation to Nnewi so as to have a firsthand view and assessment of the deplorable state of infrastructure and untold hardship businessmen and women go through daily because of the erosion menace at 100 foot road, which will in no little measure, boost our local economy and African Continental Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA) understanding.

I also called the attention of the Senate to the deplorable state of the Lagos-Badagry expressway which plays host to the biggest commodity market in West Africa; The Lagos Trade Fair Complex, pointing out the massive loss of revenue occasioned by the poor state of the road as commercial activities have suffered greatly and movement has been hindered.

I noted that the dilapidated Apapa-Oshodi expressway which leads to Tincan island port, Apapa wharf and several indigenous companies such as Dangote, Honeywell, Sahara, MRS, BUA, Sifax Bonded Terminal and numerous other oil companies, car dealers, auto parts dealers and shipping companies have led to the stagnation of several businesses including Small medium enterprises. The losses suffered by the ports alone, runs into billions of Naira daily, while business men and woman have been forced to abandon their sources

Nairaland GeneralSenate Asks Foreign Airlines To Provide Records Of Nigerians In Their Employment by grassrootsig(op): 8:17am On Jul 11, 2019
Senate asks foreign airlines to provide records of Nigerians in their employment.

Some senators on Wednesday advocated for the protection of Nigerian airlines from what they described as unfair competition from their foreign counterparts.
As one of the measures to surmount this challenge, the lawmakers directed foreign airlines to provide statistics of Nigerians in their employment.
*The subject was brought to the Senate through a motion by Sen. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah (Anambra-YPP).*
Sen. Ubah informed his colleagues that foreign airlines are now designated to multiple routes within Nigeria noting that this development threatens the survival of local airlines.
“For example, Ethiopia Airlines operates in five cities namely; Enugu, Kano, Kaduna, Abuja, and Lagos; Turkish Airlines operates in four cities: Abuja, Kano, Lagos, and Port Harcourt and Emirates Airlines operates two frequencies daily into Lagos and one to Abuja.”
He noted that besides multiple designations, foreign airlines are now being encouraged to do multiple frequencies into the country and within the country, a practice which he said is not allowed in other countries.
“For instance, Turkish Airlines has just started Istanbul to Abuja, Abuja to Port Harcourt, Port Harcourt to Abuja, then Abuja to Istanbul. Lufthansa and Air France are also doing same, thereby running indigenous airlines out of business.
“Concerned that while Emirates has two frequencies into Lagos and one to Abuja, it has announced plans to introduce a third flight in and out of Lagos to start very soon, making it three flights daily to Lagos.”
Sen. Ubah stated that Nigerian airlines such as Arik, Virgin Nigeria, Medview and others, had in the past run out of international routes through this’ trend of unfair advantages allowed foreign airlines in Nigeria.’
He said that indigenous airlines have the capacity to cover all the domestic routes being operated now by these foreign airlines. He added that the practice in international aviation is for foreign airlines to partner with local airlines to help them distribute their passengers within the domestic routes.
He said further, “The Senate notes that the unrestrained grant of designations and multiple frequencies to foreign airlines is not only hurting the growth of our indigenous carriers but also a monumental disservice to the economy of Nigeria in several ways. Besides threatening the continuous existence of our indigenous carriers, the capital flight out of Nigeria engendered by this unwholesome practice is monumental and harmful to our economy;

“The Senate notes equally that Nigerian jobs are seriously at risk as a result of this dire situation since it is the indigenous airlines that provide massive job opportunities for our people; the number of jobs created by all the foreign airlines put together is not up to what Air Peace alone created in its first one year of existence. That airline alone has over 3,000 employees and has also created over 8000 ancillary jobs.” Sen. Ubah said the practice is a threat to the survival and growth of Nigeria’s aviation industry and if unchecked, would ultimately lead to the collapse of Nigeria’s indigenous airlines.
Contributing, Sen.Yusuf Abubakar Yusuf (Taraba-APC) urged the federal government to look into the regulation of the industry as the existing ‘environment does not support fair competition.’
Sen.Kabiru Gaya (Kano-APC) and Sen.Aishatu Ahmed (Adamawa-APC) urged better collaboration between Nigeria and foreign airlines.

Sen.Betty Apiafi (Rivers-PDP) charged indigenous airlines to be more professional rather than seeking protection from competition. “We can’t keep protecting (them). Government gave them money in the last administration but they were not accounted for. We shouldn’t just be sentimental, our airlines need to be professional,” she said.
The Senate resolved to invite the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, the Director General of Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and Managing Director of FAAN to explain why foreign airlines are allowed to fly multiple routes within Nigeria to mop up passengers; a practice not allowed in other countries.
The lawmakers also asked foreign airlines to provide statistics of Nigerians in their employment, encourage them to employ more Nigerians and partner with indigenous Airlines.
While urging the federal government to give the indigenous airlines the necessary support and protection, the lawmakers resolved to invite the indigenous airline operators to explain to the Senate the challenges they are facing in the aviation industry.
Sen. Lawan in his concluding comments urged the government to give more support to indigenous firms operating in the economy.

“We should do enough to encourage our patriots who have the courage to put their resources in any part of the economy,” he said.

Nairaland GeneralSen. Ifeanyi Ubah On Needs To Protect Nigerian Indigenous Airlines by grassrootsig(op):
“UNFAIR COMPETITION: URGENT NEED TO PROTECT NIGERIA’S INDIGENOUS AIRLINES FROM EXTINCTION DUE TO MULTIPLE DESIGNATIONS AND FREQUENCIES GRANTED FOREIGN AIRLINES IN NIGERIA.” This motion is aimed at strengthening and repositioning indigenous airlines and Air Peace in particular, in line with my determination to revamp Southeast and Nigerian economy.

Through the motion, I got the Senate to note that foreign airlines are now designated to multiple routes within Nigeria. For example, Ethopia Airlines operates in five cities namely; Enugu, Kano, Kaduna, Abuja and Lagos. Turkish Airlines operates in four cities; Abuja, Kano, Lagos and Port Harcourt, and Emirates operates two frequencies daily into Lagos and one to Abuja.

I expressed worry about the fate of the indigenous airlines with the spate of multiple designations given to the foreign airlines. Besides multiple designations, foreign airlines are now being encouraged to do multiple frequencies into the country and within the country, which is not allowed in other countries. For instance, Turkish Airlines has just started Istanbul to Abuja, Abuja to Port Harcourt, Port Harcourt to Abuja, then Abuja to Istanbul. Lufthansa and Air France are also doing the same, thereby running running indigenous airlines out of international routes. For the avoidance of doubt, while Emirates has two frequencies into Lagos and one to Abuja, it has announced plans to introduce a third flight in and out of Lagos to start very soon, making it three flights daily to Lagos.

With extreme gladness i noted that Air Peace being Nigeria, Central Africa and West Africa’s biggest Airline had commenced international flight operations into Sharjah, and Dubai on the 5th of July, 2019. I am however worried that this initiative can be stifled with the unfair advantage given to foreign airlines. Cognizant of the fact that other Nigerian Airlines such as ARIK, Virgin Nigeria, Medview and others, have in the past been run out of local patronage and international routes by this trend of unfair advantages allowed foreign airlines in Nigeria. So, my motion was to forestall a recurrence.

For example, a Lufthansa airplane flying from Lagos to New York cannot fly passengers to Atlanta too. Lufthansa as a foreign airline can only stop travelers in New York and then transfer Atlanta passengers to a local American airline they are partnering with or codesharing to ferry the passengers to Atlanta. By so doing, America is supporting their independent airlines and creating more jobs for its citizens. In the same vein, a foreign airline coming into Nigeria can fly from its base directly to Lagos, but should not stop in Lagos and make a final flight to Kano. It can also fly directly to Kano from its base. Anything done otherwise is an unfair advantage which deprives our indigenous airlines of their rights and discourages local content while stifling our economy and reducing employment opportunities. By partnering with our indigenous airlines they can improve efficiency when these local airlines know that they are partnering with internationally reputed airlines with strict monitoring and penalties.

I believe that our indigenous airlines have the capacity to cover all the domestic routes being operated now by these foreign airlines and will do better if supported by government. I also raised awareness on the fact that the practice in international aviation is for foreign airlines to partner with local airlines to help them distribute their passengers within the domestic routes.

Essentially, my argument was centered on the unrestrained grant of designations and multiple frequencies to foreign airlines that is not only hurting the growth of our indigenous carriers but also a monumental disservice to the economy of Nigeria in several ways. Besides threatening the continuous existence of our indigenous carriers, the capital flight out of Nigeria engendered by this unwholesome practice is monumental and harmful to our economy and concern evey reasonable Nigerian.

There is no doubt that jobs are seriously at risk as a result of this dire situation since it is the indigenous airline that provide massive job opportunities for our people; the number of jobs created by all the foreign airlines put together is not up to what Air Peace alone created in its first year of existence. Air Peace Airline alone has over 3,000 employees and has also created over 8000 ancillary jobs.

I am therefore disturbed that this unwholesome practice is not only threatening the survival and growth of Nigeria’s aviation industry but, to a large extent, harming the economy of the nation. In other words, I am convinced that if this practice is not checked immediately, it would ultimately lead to the collapse of Nigerian indigenous Airlines;

The Senate, totally agreeing with me, approved all my 4 prayers in the motion and they are:

1. To invite the permanent secretary of the ministry of Transport, the Director General of Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority(NCAA) and Managing Director of FAAN to explain to the Senate why foreign airlines are allowed to fly multiple routes within Nigeria to mop up passengers; a practice not allowed in other countries;

2. To mandate foreign airlines to provide statistics of Nigerians in their employment and encourage them to employ more Nigerians and to partner with indigenous airlines;

3. To urge the Federal Government to give the indigenous Airlines the necessary support and protection so as to keep them afloat; and

4. Invite the indigenous airline operators to explain to the Senate the challenges they are facing in the aviation industry in Nigeria as well as to point the way forward.

Nairaland GeneralSen.ifeanyi Ubah, Keeping His Constituency Abreast Of His Legislative Activities by grassrootsig(op): 11:00pm On Jul 09, 2019
In line with my promise to keep my constituency abreast of my daily legislative activities, here are the viewpoints I canvassed in my legislative activities today, Tuesday, 9th of July, 2019:

1. On the floor of the Senate, I co-sponsored a motion. The motion was sponsored by Senator T.A Orji of Abia Central on the urgent need to look into the “Rising incidence of suicides amongst Nigerians”. I shared the Senate's grave concern over the rising cases of suicide, particularly amongst young Nigerians in recent times, as well as the weak disposition of the Government, religious institutions and other relevant corporate bodies who have not been able to effectively address the menace in the country. Through the motion, we urged the Federal Government through the Ministry of Information and the Ministry of Health to create urgent awareness on how to control depression and establish trauma centres across the Federation. We also got the Senate to also resolve to engage the Executive arm on the need to expand the scope and content of Special Intervention Programmes of Government in creating economic opportunities for the vulnerable sections of the nation's population.

2. I also co-sponsored another motion on the “Death of Nine Nigerian migrants in Libya”, which was presented by Sen. Barau I. Jibrin of Kano North. The motion raised awareness on the killing of nine Nigerian citizens in a double air strike on a detention center outside Tripoli, the capital of Libya and condemned the air strike in its entirety. We got the Senate to urge the ministry of Foreign Affairs to react to this unfortunate development and to hasten the process of bringing back Nigerian migrants from Libya's detention camps. We equally called on the United Nations to investigate the perpetrators of the dastardly act and bring them to Justice.

3. Also, as a member of the Senate Adhoc committee on media and public affairs, i actively participated in the first Senate media briefing chaired by Senator Dayo Adeyeye. In the media chat, we assured Nigerians of our commitment to creating a 9th Senate that will work for all Nigerians under the leadership of His Excellency Senator Ahmed Lawan, as well as a parliament that will be marked by transparency and accountability through proper and articulation and timely communication of the views and agenda of the Senate to the general public.

4. Finally, I participated in the extensive deliberations with the Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Legislative Agenda chaired by Senator Mohammed Adamu Aliero of which I am also a member. As the committee saddled with the responsibility of charting the policy direction framework for the 9th Senate, I pushed the position for the Senators to unite in order to perform optimally for the common good of our constituents and Nigeria at large.

Nairaland GeneralSen.ifeanyi Ubah Urges Chinese Govt To Make Its Visa Procurement Less Cumbersome by grassrootsig(op): 4:27pm On Jul 05, 2019
Sen. Dr patrick Ifeanyi Ubah visits the Chinese ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency, Dr. Zhou Pingjian, at the Chinese Consulate Concerning VISA Issuance To Igbo Businessmen As Well As Promotion Of Made In Nigeria Goods In China.

Yesterday, I paid a courtesy visit to the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency, Dr. Zhou Pingjian to discuss the increasing difficulty and mass refusal of visas suffered by well-meaning Nigerians especially my constituents who on a daily basis, are denied Chinese visas for reasons which are unclear and sometimes unsatisfactory. I noted that over 70 percent of visa applicants who are mostly business men and women of repute find it difficult to secure Chinese visas.

I reminded the Ambassador that as the Senator representing Anambra South, my allegiance is distilled to the interests and wellbeing of my constituents and Nigerians to a larger extent. Furthermore, I advised the People's Republic of China to consider the adoption of a more effective visa policy framework that will not destabilize the long-standing commercial ties that exist between both countries as Nigerians all over the world are known for excellence and entrepreneurship.

The meeting was an excellent forum to discuss ways to enhance bilateral trade relations between both Nations as well as the need to positively review the visa rejection issue and related difficulties that serve as unnecessary impediments for Nigerians who wish to travel to China, especially for business purposes.

In response, the Chinese Ambassador, Dr Zhou who was thankful for the visit said that China is currently working on an improved communication system that would focus on updating Nigerians on the visa application procedures with the primary aim of bettering communication between visa applicants and the visa processing unit of the Chinese embassy in a bid to boost the number of Nigerians that are granted entry visas daily. While referring to Nigeria as the potential workshop of the world, the Ambassador also stated that increased visa issuance and entry of Nigerians into China would foster better understanding and friendship between both countries as well as increase revenue. In summary, he affirmed his commitment to my vision geared towards the creation of an era where more “Made in Nigeria goods” through the aid of China will thrive.

Nairaland GeneralHusbands And Wives, Stop Wasting Your Time Praying by grassrootsig(op): 10:15am On Jun 24, 2019
*"HUSBANDS AND WIVES , STOP WASTING YOUR TIME PRAYING"*

Benson and his wife don't sit next to each other during Church services.

Even when going to Church services, they go in different vehicles; and when they travel in the same car, it is usually a very quiet and uncomfortable ride.

Benson sat at his usual spot in the Church service; the fourth line on the far left row. His wife sat on the center row.

The Pastor took to the podium.

*"Husbands, stop wasting your time praying"* the Pastor began.

The congregants got alarmed. No one expects to hear a pastor saying prayer is a waste of time.

I am not here to discourage you to pray, but to encourage you to pray right.

Husbands, stop wasting your time praying if you are not treating your wives well.

You come to church driving your expensive cars, giving your offerings and tithes, active in Church, some of you are Church leaders; but how are you treating your wife?

You may look good to us Church members, but it is your wife and children that know who you truly are" said the Pastor.

Benson turned to face his wife. She looked at him. Benson could see her eyes.

Her left eye swollen from the blow he gave her last week when she confronted him about his alcoholism, pornography use and mischievous behavior.

People couldn't tell she had a black eye because of the make up she had on, so well done.

The Pastor continued, "People have perfected the art of cover up. Here in Church, so many are hurting but you wouldn't know.

People come here wearing their nice clothes, shiny smiles, they are active in ministry but hurting a lot in their marriage.

"We have become numb and plastic, brushing things under the carpet. But today we shall heal; and shall address those wounds we hide."

The Pastor cleared his throat and continued, "Many of those who are hurting their spouses are using the church to hide.

They think that because they give offering s and tithes, because they make public prayers, because they read the Word or because they hold a Church leadership position that they are right with God. God is also interested in what you do in your marriage and in your family.

The Word says that when you treat your wife badly, it hinders your prayers. Men, you claim to be prayerful?

Hear this, "Your first ministry is your home. Stop trying to blackmail God with your service in Church yet you are mean and hurtful towards your spouse."

Many of the members of the congregation got restless and unsettled.

The Pastor continued, "Many of those who are being hurt by their spouse hide their pain and want to project an image that all is well to validate that they are blessed and in control.

Some of you are active in Church to run away from the pain in your marriages".

The congregation was silent. Some straightening their ties, others fidgeting with their Bibles, adjusting their sitting position.

This pastor was preaching truth and it was uncomfortable.

The Pastor continued, "The husbands are not the only ones guilty here... Wives, don't you know the Bible says when your husband found you he found good virtuous woman and you brought favour?

Then why are you the source of your husband's headache and stress? Have you been so toxic that you have turned your prayerful husband into a prayer-less one?

Do you make him regret marrying you because you bring more complications than he had before marrying you?

How you treat your husband can be a stumbling block in his walk with God or an environment that encourages growth.

Many of you wives married your individual husbands primarily because of their relationship with God, so why are you now destroying their relationship with God instead of celebrating and nurturing it?

Why are you being a burden to your husband emotionally, spiritually, socially, sexually and financially instead of being one who brings favour?"

Benson's wife looked at her husband. Benson looked at her, and she looked away.

The Pastor paused to drink his glass of water.

And he continued, "When I am thirsty, I drink a glass of water.

When your spouse gets thirsty, will you allow God to use you to bless your spouse?

You've been told many sermons that focus on you as an individual, that God will make you prosper as an individual.

I am here to tell you your blessings are tied to people, you are blessed to be a blessing to others. Our God is not an individualistic God.

Your blessing is tied to your marriage, your family. It's not about you; it is about Jesus and Jesus is about love.

What good is it to prosper and be successful when you have no love? It is all vanity.

God cares about your family, how you treat your spouse and children"

Silence. Silence. Silence...

"Yes, we pray. But what kind of prayers does your spouse pray because of you?

When your spouse prays, is it largely to cry to God because of the hurt you bring?

Is it to plead with God to change you from the monster you've become?

Is it to plead for grace to deal with how difficult you are? Or is to give thanks for you?"

Silence. Silence as grave yard

"Are you really prayerful? Do you really value prayer? What is prayer?

Then why is it that many of you find it easy to come to us pastors for us to pray with you as an individual, you find it is easy to pray in public, in a Church service or Bible study, but find it so hard to pray with your spouse?

Isn't that telling of what is going on in your marriage? Don't you know that the more you pray with your spouse the stronger your marriage will be?

But how can you find it easy to pray with a spouse you hurt or who hurts you?"

The Pastor paused and looked at the congregation. Eyes staring at him.

"I challenge you. I challenge you to pray with your spouse and to treat your spouse well. You must save your home, your marriage, your love!

Husbands, you are the head of the home. I challenge you to stand up and go to where your wife is and pray with her as a start of a more prayerful chapter in your marriage.

Don't do it because I asked you to but because you want to. Your choice"

One by one, the husbands present stood up.

Benson stood up too.

Benson walked to where his wife was.

The face of Benson's wife overwhelmed with love, she looked on as her husband walked to her.

She almost stood up but he gave hand gestures at her to stay seated.

Benson reached where she sat. Their eyes met.

Benson knelt down. He stared at her then kissed her swollen left eye.

"I am sorry" he said.

"Can I pray with you?" He asked.

She got up from her seat and knelt down too.

There, on the floor as the Church service was still ongoing, husbands prayed with their wives.

Benson prayed kneeling with his wife.

They prayed for forgiveness, for thanksgiving, for love, for renewal, for peace, for direction; for their marriage.

Marriages were healed.

If You have been blessed by this message please share. You might just be saving a marriage at the verge of being broken.

Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah in Egypt for the greatest football fiesta in Africa, AFCON 2019.

The Senator representing Anambra South and the national leader of Young Progressives Party (YPP), Sen. (Dr.) Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah was among the dignitaries at the 20,000 capacity Alexandria Stadium, Alexandria, Egypt, where The "Super Eagles" of Nigeria defeated The "Swallows In Battle" of Burundi in the first match of Group B, in the on going African Nations Cup football tournament, AFCON 2019.

Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah is in Egypt for the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in his capacity as AFCON Organizing Committee Member. Recall that Sen. Ubah who is also the biggest football investor in Nigeria was also in Russia during the 2018 World Cup football tournament, as one of the FIFA'S special guest for the 2018 World Cup Fiesta with other world football stakeholders and investors.

Also, recall that during the 2019 Anambra South Senatorial campaign, Senator Ubah assured the people that if elected, he will sponsor quality bills that will efficiently and effectively harness potentials and opportunities that abound in the nation's sports industry, especially in the Football subsector, in order to provide Nigeria's economy the platform to reap the bountiful benefits.

He in company of the President of Nigerian football federation, NFF, Amaju Pinnick, ex-internationals like Kanu Papilo Nwankwo, Austine JJ Okocha, Daniel the Bull Amokachi and others had some encouraging pep talk with the nigerian super eagles players inside their dressing g room during the halftime break. And one won't be wrong by saying that their halftime pep talk with the players yielded a good result, because they won the match after that.

Super Eagles of Nigeria's next match will be on 26th June, 2019, against The "Syli
Nationale Stars" of Guinea. A win in that match, will automatically qualify the Nigerian Super Eagles for quarter finals stage of the competition.

Go Super Eagles!

Go Nigeria!

God has set for ndi Anambra state an open door which no man can close.

Nairaland GeneralAnambra State 2021 Begins by grassrootsig(op): 2:04pm On Jun 16, 2019
Anambra 2021 Begins...

When Dr Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah left APGA to YPP last year October, to vie for Anambra south senatorial election, many said it was an impossible task.

The naysayers argued that anyone contesting election on any platform other than APGA, PDP and to a smaller proportion APC will not win in Anambra state.

While these doubts were going on, a friend called me and said, ''I like your man Ifeanyi Ubah but he won't win the senate election." When I asked why he hastily concluded that Ifeanyi Ubah would not win, he asked me this question, "Eneh, APGA's logo is 'okuku', APC's logo is 'azizi', PDP is umbrella, so what's the logo of YPP? How will voters especially those women in the villages know the logo?"

In an attempt to clear his doubts, I told him that before the election that the canvassers would ensure the identity of YPP logo which is an 'open door' is simplified.

And the naysayers continued...

When I joined the campaign team of Dr Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah for senate Anambra south senatorial election after the 'ekperima' plot to stop him at APGA, some funny characters went to Ubah and told him that, whoever Eneh supports do not win election.

But Ubah being a man of faith rebuffed them. When I spoke with him on phone, Dr Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah said, "Eneh they said you don't win election, but we shall win this, I assure you we will win, I will win Anambra south senatorial election with YPP."

And to the Glory of God, YPP did not only win the Anambra south senatorial election, it was a landslide. When those who claimed to be political professors moved to the collation centre to rig the election, Almighty God intervened and stopped them. When the Returning Officer did a mysterious U-turn and declared the result inconclusive owing to a frivolous petition by the candidate of PDP, the same God who said the Uga family business is over and opened the doors of ndi Anambra south through YPP arrested the situation.

As a Senator-Elect, Dr Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah identified with senator Ahmed Lawan and endorsed him to run for senate president. Again, the naysayers doubted his choice of Lawan.

When the Igbo traders at the Lagos trader fair complex were served with revocation notice of their concession agreement, Dr Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah who was at Lagos with Senate President, Lawan and other senators quickly organised a meeting with the leadership of the trade fair. Today, that concession misunderstanding has been put to a hold - that's the YPP open door to Ndigbo.

AIF Media predicated that Lawan would emerge senate president, the same way This Forum, predicted and appealed to all youths and women to join all YPP support groups that Ubah would win February 23 Anambra south senatorial election.

With the political manual of Dr Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, on June 11, 2019 senator Ahmed Lawan was elected the Senate President.

As the Anambra state 2021 governorship election draws closer, it is not APGA, it is not PDP...

...A new party is coming - God has opened a new door for ndigbo.

Eneh Victor Chigozie
Head, AIF Media.
