There is a terrible veiled message here. Even those who buy cars - MERE cars to add to their existing fleet! - of more than N10m, are purporting to "support" the ailing guy by posting appeals on their social media accounts asking for donations from all and sundry.

There is a mocking undertone that any self-respecting guy would immediately discern: make money at all costs - invest, invent, get lucky, defraud, peddle drugs, whatever! (but don't use violent means sha, if you ask me). Do anything ' socially acceptable' to make money, and spare yourself the shame of such nonsensical public opprobrium and drama. If one fool can buy a car of N70m to add to her fleet of cars, and yet can 'help' you her supposed "close friend" save your life by publicly soliciting crumb donations for your kidney transplant, then the message is clear: you are on your own.

Make money anyhow you can (but don't kill or maim or traumatise your fellow man sha, anything else goes). It's a jungle out there, and people are determined to humiliate you. Idiots would spend millions on a meaningless night out or party or celebration, but would advertise your need for crumbs needed to survive, with pictures of you bedridden and pitifully begging for some money to live. And they are your so-called "friends". Joke.

Prefer to die trying to make money anyhow you can than to be humiliated.

When women say these kinds of things, then it reinforces misogyny and gender inequality. There are 'rich' prostitutes in Banana Island and there are regular prostitutes hustling in Ojuelegba. The difference is luck, circumstances and packaging. Your area code or the car you drive doesn't wash away your ignominy, neither does the beauty/quality of the gift wrap increase the value or quality of the gift inside. Francis Edegware, father of member of the National Youth Service Corps, Grace Oghene Edegware, who was abducted by suspected Fulani herdsmen, has confirmed that he paid N200,000 ransom to secure her freedom.

According to him, his wife who took the money to the kidnappers went to the Lions’ den to get his daughter released.

Edegware was speaking to THE PUNCH on Sunday on how his family succeeded in getting his daughter freed from the herdsmen.

The ‘Corper’, a graduate of Accountancy from the Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro, was deployed by the NYSC to Lagos State.

She and two other sisters were said to be travelling in a bus belonging to God is Good Motors on Wednesday when they were robbed at gun point and taken into the bush where a ransom of N15m were demanded from their family members.

While they demanded N5m from the family of the two sisters, the kidnappers asked for N10m from Grace Oghene’s family.

He said, “My dear journalist, I am pleased to inform you that I have secured the release of my daughter from the bush. She was released on Saturday evening. You can hear the noise of people who have been jubilating. I appreciate your concern, I appreciate PUNCH for your assistance.

“You know with God, all things are possible. In every step in life, there is a risk and we have to take the risk. We believe in God, the Holy Bible says that there are many afflictions for the righteous, but God will see them through. We believe in the word of God that we will be victorious at the end. That is why my wife took the money inside the bush along Abaji Road. She gave the kidnappers the money and my wife was released with another woman whose husband came there too.

And so it came to be that people's beloved daughters and sisters are spending Christmas in an unknown bush, at the mercy of heartless beasts. This makes me really sad. Why haven't we heard anything about rescue efforts and so forth?

Now we are talking about human lives and a real case of violent criminality, yet nobody in the police is interested in swinging into action.
