Medical teams from 15 African nations are convening in Dakar, Senegal, on Thursday for an emergency workshop on the first layer of preparedness for the virus.


WHO officials have said 24 countries, encompassing most of Africa’s population, will receive the material needed to conduct the tests by the end of the week.


Meanwhile, two suspected cases of the novel coronavirus in Ghana have tested negative at the Noguchi Memorial Institute, according to the Chief Executive Officer of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Daniel Asare.


The Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital on Wednesday isolated two foreign nationals; a Chinese and an Argentine for showing symptoms associated with the coronavirus, which has already claimed over 500 lives and infected more than 25,000 people in other parts of the world.



Addressing the media, Chief Executive Officer of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Daniel Asare said: 
      “The preliminary confirmation was negative and the next one that came, which is the actual confirmation, shows that they are negative.”

“Ghana is safe, Korle-Bu is safe, tourists coming in are safe,” he added.

Africa’s first suspected case of the novel coronavirus in Africa emerged last month in the Ivory Coast.

That case also came back negative.

Ghana is one of only six countries in Africa with testing capabilities for the novel coronavirus.

A reckless driver has allegedly killed a woman identified to be a native of Aramoko-Ekiti, the headquarters of Ekiti West Local Government Area of Ekiti State as some residents of the ancient took to the street to protest againist the killing of the innocent women.

According to reports from a reliable source said the vehicle lost focus while driving and hit two persons this afternoon along Erio-Aramoko-Ado-Ekiti road.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident was caused as a result of the recklessness on the part of the driver who was at high speed before skidding off the road to crush the victim to death who was on a motorcycle.

He added the motorcyclist who sustained serious injury had been taken to the hospital for medicare.

As a result of the sudden incident, some angry youths stormed the street to express their aggrieved concerned over the death of the victim.

They barricaded the highway for almost two hours thereby causing vehicular restrictions.

The Public Relations Officer Ekiti State command, Sunday Abutu, confirmed the incident adding that the driver is currently in the police custody for further investigation.

A corps member serving in Kaduna state was praised in front of his colleagues after he returned the excess allowance paid into his account, VAM News has gathered.


The youth corps member was paid 66,000 Naira instead of his 33,000 Naira allowance in January and he promptly alerted his superiors to the error.

THE Ondo State Governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, has announced the recruitment forms for the Operation Amotekun outfit will be ready next week.

The governor, who spoke through his Special Adviser on Security Matter, Alhaji Jimoh Dojumo, said the recruitment on the operation process had begun.

He said, “ We are yet to issue out forms and if there is any form that is out now in Ondo State, it is illegal, we have drafted the forms but we have not issued them out.

Activist and lawyer, Mr. Tope Akinyode, has sued Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for banning commercial motorcycles otherwise known as Okada, and commercial tricycles in six Local Government Areas and nine Local Council Development Areas.

Akinyode also joined the Lagos State Government, the state Attorney-General, the Speaker and the House of Assembly in the suit, The PUNCH reports.

In the suit with number, TEMP/5013/2020, Akinyode, who is also the National President of Revolutionary Lawyer’s Forum, asked the Ikeja State High Court to declare that the restriction on Okada and Keke NAPEP was illegal and at variance with sections 41 and 44 of the 1999 Constitution.

He is also seeking an order of interim injunction restraining the respondents or their agents from enforcing the Transport Sector and Reform Law, 2017.

The lawyer prayed the court to restrain the respondents and their agents perpetually from enforcing the Transport Sector and Reform Law, 2017.

THE authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun state has suspended another lecturer, Monday Omo-Etan, for alleged sexual assault on a 19-year-old female student.

A release by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, stated that the University has also handed over Omo-Etan to the police.

The statement read in part,
“Less than three weeks after the Management of OAU, Ile Ife, expressed her zero-tolerance against sexual harassment by investigating and suspending a lecturer of the Department of International Relations, Mr. Olabisi Olaleye, the University has suspended Omo-Etan, a staff of the University’s Centre for Distance Learning for sexually molesting a 19-year-old female student.

“The Management has reinstated her commitment to the total eradication of any form of sexual harassment, molestation or other social vices.”

Two serving corps members identified as Mohammed Alhaji-Musa and Hauwa Yahaya-Bagudu are set to get married on Friday February 7, after meeting in NYSC's orientation camp in Kano almost a year ago. 

Mohammed Alhaji Musa is reportedly from Afo in Nassarawa State, while Hauwa Yahaya Bagudu is from Nupe ethnic group in Niger State. 

Recounting how he met his bride, Musa said their first meeting was at the NYSC orientation camp kitchen in Kano State. 

He said;

 “We met in camp during our platoon activities, especially the day we met during our platoon duty in the kitchen. 

"Since then love took hold of me like breeze from nowhere.  I was overwhelmed by her kindness and the kind of hospitality I received the first day I went to their house". 

On her own part, Hauwa said she never wanted to serve in Kano. She added that her deployment to the state has now turned out to be a huge blessing to her. 

The graduate of I.B.B University in Lapai, Niger State said; 
"Today I thank God because my being here has turned out to be a blessing".

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo state has described installation of cable car for Idanre Hill as part of his plans to revitalise tourism in the town.

Governor Akeredolu stated this on his official Twitter handle on Tuesday while responding to comments by followers on the need to install cable cars in Akure, the Ondo state capital.

In his response, Akeredolu said Idanre would be the first to witness such development for the purpose of tourism.

A Chicago rapper who hired a hit man to murder his own mum so that he can have access to her bank accounts and life insurance, has been sentenced to 99 years in prison.

The rising rapper, Qaw’mane Wilson AKA “Young QC” was on Friday found guilty of the murder-for-hire last year, and sentenced to spend the rest of his life behind bars. The gunman, Eugene Spencer, was sentenced to 100 years.

Cook County Judge Stanley Sacks who jailed the men said: “The word is ‘matricide,’ meaning murder of one’s own mother, is a big offense.

In 2012, Wilson, who was the only child of her mother hired a hitman Eugene Spencer to kill her so he could have access to her accounts. Yolanda Holmes was shot and stabbed to death by the hitman after he was ordered by Wilson to “make sure the b*tch is dead.”

It was also revealed that Spencer drove with Wilson’s girlfriend to the rapper’s mum’s home to kill her.

He reportledly shot Ms.Holmes as she slept in her bed, then struggled with her boyfriend, knocking him unconscious, before returning to stab Holmes after a phone conversation with Wilson, who ordered him to “make sure the bitch is dead.”

Months after his mother's death, Wilson collected the money in his mother’s bank accounts amd used it to fund his extravagant lifestyle.

On another ocassion, he withdrew thousands of dollars from a bank and tossed wads of cash to a crowd of people he said were his fans. He captured the the moments in a YouTube video that was played for the jury.

Cook County Judge Stanley Sacks said during the sentencing that Holmes was a devoted mother who gave her son anything he wanted.

“Whatever he wanted, his mother gave to him. A car. A job. One could say he was spoiled.“She gave Qaw’mane life, and it was his choice to take it way from her,” Judge Sacks told the court yesterday.

When asked if he had anything to say before Sacks made his ruling, He said" “I just want to say, noved my mother more than me,” he said. “She was all I had. That’s it.”

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has registered 1 .1 million candidates for the 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculations Examination which is billed for between March 14 and April 4.

The board gave this update in an interview with our correspondent on Saturday , noting that a total of 47 Computer - Based Test centres had been suspended nationwide over extortions, technical issues and other infractions.

According to research obtained from PUNCH, the UTME candidates were given a registration period of between January 13 and February 17, 2020 , and have already hit 1.1 million with over two weeks to the deadline.

In 2019 , over 1 .8 million candidates registered for the UTME.

The JAMB Head of Media and Information , Dr Fabian Benjamin, confirmed the figures on Saturday, noting that two CBT centres were suspended on Saturday and added to make a total of 47 CBT centres.

He said, “ So far , we have about 1 .1 million candidates registered as at today ( Saturday ). We still have more than two weeks of registration.

“ A lot of arrests have been made concerning fraudulent CBT centres and the arrests are ongoing.

Ogun state college of health Technology, in Ilese Ijebu, Ogun State, has announced the expulsion of 21 students from the institution, VAM News reports.


The college of Health technology also placed 3 others on indefinite suspension, according to a statement signed by the institution's public relations officer, Ayodele Alaga.


The statement, published on January 30th on the school’s bulletin, contained the names, department and matriculation numbers of the expelled and suspended students.


Although no reason was given for the action, in the bulletin, according to the report from students disciplinary committee at its emergency meeting has directed that the following underlisted students be expelled/suspended from the college as their continued stay in the college is inimical to the wellbeing of the students populace.

In a bid to renew the annual contracts between The Nigeria Army and occupants of shop/office spaces, land and buildings from the controversial 3,646 Acres of land allegedly taken over from Kelebe-Omu Landowners Associations for more than four decades, the representatives of Nigeria Army reportedly held meetings with the occupants of parts of the said land in Osogbo on Monday.

In what could be described as a ‘renew of contract’ in the year 2020 by the Nigerian Army over the lingering 3,646 Acres of land debacle between both parties, our correspondent exclusively gathered that a fresh order has been issued to all occupants on the already leased or rented out lands in what is believed to be a quick attempt to reduce tension and public interest on the said land which has been a subject of litigation for long.

A fresh order was given by Sargeant Ojo and Captain Abubakar of Nigeria Army during one of the meetings with the occupants of the disputed land, stating the new dimensions of which the money would be paid to the Nigeria Army in monthly basis instead of the previous annual payment by those tenants.

Investigation also revealed that many of the occupants of the disputed land were living in fear because of the intimidation that may arise from their disputed landlord, this is why those who spoke with the OsunReporters.com claimed anonymity on the recent order circulated to tenants/occupants of the said land.

In Osogbo, some of the occupants of part of the said land who are using it for farming usually paid N5,000 per annum in not less than 200 acres of the land; numerous shop owners are paying N10,000 annually; those who are making use of the palm oil prospecting, felling of trees and sawmilling it into timber longs and planks are paying N20,000 per annum; construction of fish ponds, farming camps, sand/gravel digging/haulage were not left out while sales of land for private use cost about three hundred and seventy-five thousand naira N375,000 (military price) per 750-square meters, and five hundred and twenty-five thousand naira N525,000 for civilian were amongst those who are paying huge amount of money to the Nigeria Army which could have accumulated to several millions or billions of naira.

Recall that, the Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo recently adjourned for ruling over the jurisdiction on the age long land dispute involving the Nigeria army and the Kelebe-Omu landowners Association comprises of Osogbo, Olorunda, Obokun and Boripe Local Governments of Osun State.

Meanwhile, OsunReporters had earlier served the Nigerian Army, Engineering in Ede a letter of request to grant an interview over this matter. The three-day prayer and fasting declared by the Christian Association of Nigeria will start on Friday (today).

CAN President, Samson Ayokunle, said on Thursday that the three-day prayer and fasting was declared to save Nigeria and Christians in particular from being consumed by insurgents, Islamic terrorists, bandits, kidnappers and ritualists.


He enjoined every church in Nigeria to observe the spiritual exercise’s scheduled for between January 31 and February 2, 2020.

Ayokunle in a statement in Abuja said if possible, churches should meet in the evening of each day of fasting to pray together.

According to him, on Sunday February 2, there will be prayer walk around the locality of each church with Christians pronouncing ‘Jesus, the Prince of Peace as Lord’ and displaying placards with the inscription, ‘No to further killings.’

They should also demand that the federal and state governments should rise up to their responsibility of securing the lives and property of the citizens.

Ayokunle said, “Our prayers points include; we bind and rebuke all terrorists, Boko Haram, ISWAP, herdsmen, bandits and kidnappers operating anywhere in Nigeria in Jesus Name. We bind and rebuke all spirits of hatred and murder that are manifesting through terrorism, killings, banditry and kidnappings in Nigeria in Jesus Name. Adebayo Mukaila, a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps(NYSC) in Osun State was reportedly killed by two-man armed robbery gang on Tuesday 28th of January 2020, VAM News reports.

We gathered that the deceased owned a container made-shop at Omo-west Street close to the NYSC Secretariat in Osogbo the state capital, where he engaged in his daily business such as the sales of credit recharge cards, cable subscription and as well as money transfer.

Investigation revealed that Mukaila popularly called Alfa on the street was attacked after closing his shop around 11pm on Tuesday by the hoodlums.

An eyewitnes in the same resident, lamented they heard the sound of gunshots but, no one was bold enough to challenge and rescue the deceased.

Meanwhile, the NYSC officials in the state, Mr Ayodele Adegoke has confirmed the incident, he said they have contacted the family of the deceased and also commiserated with them.

Nigerian businessman, Adebutu Kessington popularly known as Baba Ijebu is reportedly being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over an alleged tax fraud and economic sabotage.

The investigation which was rolled out after Western Lotto (another betting company which is owned by former Ogun Senator Buruji Kashamu) petitioned the anti-graft agency, has led to the detention of one of Adebutu's sons and a management official of Premier Lotto at the Lagos office of the EFCC.

EFCC sources told Premium Times that they have identified at least N5 billion in revenue losses against the government since the investigation began, directly blaming the management of Premier Lotto for allegedly shortchanging Nigerians.

Though the EFCC has not officially filed any charges against Premier Lotto, it is however speculated that the probe might be expanded to include other betting companies and investigate claims of sharp practices and how some firms allegedly withhold funds from winning customers.

Before now, Baba Ijebu has been widely hailed as pioneering inclusive gambling in Nigeria and shooting it into the mainstream. Although it was only in 2001 that he registered Premier Lotto, the betting franchise that accounts for the largest share of his wealth.

Chief Adebutu and former Senator Buruji Kashamu are no strangers to each other as there has always been a lotto turf war between them.

The FCT Police Command has confirmed the abduction of Gift Abiikor, a 17-year-old student of Federal Government College in Rubochi, Abuja.

FCT's Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Anjuguri Manzah revealed that the student was abducted by unknown persons in the early hours of Tuesday January 28.

It was gathered that FCT's Commissioner of Police, CP Bala Ciroma has already ordered an investigation into the abduction. 

The statement read in parts; 
 “According to one Ahmed Adamu, who reported the incident to the police, some armed men stormed his house at about 0100hrs and abducted Gift Abiikor while asleep in the same bed with his children.

“The unfortunate incident happened at the residence of Ahmed Adamu, which is outside the premises of Federal Government College Rubochi.”

A 26-year-old woman identified as Titilayo Akinsola, reportedly died of Lassa fever on Saturday January 25 at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Idi-Aba community of Abeokuta, Ogun State's capital.

The hospital's spokesperson, Segun Orisajo who confirmed the death told newsmen that series of tests showed the deceased had Lassa fever. 

He also disclosed that they did everything possible to save her life.

Orisajo said;
“She (the victim) was rushed to the hospital four days ago and series of tests confirmed that she had Lassa fever. Our medical team did everything possible to save her life but unfortunately she died."

Orisajo allayed fears of members of the public by stating that they are working with the state government to contain the spread of the disease. 

Ogun State's Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker has also confirmed the development.

The Ondo State Police Command has brought before the Akure Magistrate Court one Olaleye Ifayemi aka 'General' for Impersonating Distinguished Senator Ayo Akinyelure, who represents Ondo Central in the National Assembly, VAM News reports.

The adage that says, 'everyday is for the thief while one day is for the owner' came to fulfilment on Friday as a 27-year old man, Olaleye Ifayemi aka 'General' was arraigned on Tuesday, 24th January for impersonation.

It was gathered that Fayemi, a native of Ilaje in Ese-Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State paraded himself as Senator Ayo Akinyelure on phone number 08044486968 with intention to defraud one Adesanya Fayemi aka Ade Basket when he demanded the sum of N300,000 to facilitate the approval of employment for his daughter, one Miss Loveth Fayehun.

VAM News correspondent while speaking with Charles Akinwon, SA (Media & Strategy) to the Distinguished Senator sounded a note of warning to whoever is out to tarnish the good image of the Distinguished Senator to desist from such act as the law will take its full course on whoever is caught.

VAM News learnt that the court has admitted the defendant to bail and further hearing on the matter has been adjourned till March 11, 2020.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has declared a 3-day national fast for all churches in Nigeria and all christians both home and abroad.

Chairman and leader of the CAN, Dr. Samson Ayokunle, said in a statement on Friday, that the fasting exercise was to end the growing concerns of brutal killings of innocent Nigerians.



The cleric further stated that the fasting is to equip the Nigerian government with the spiritual capacity to sudue the activities of insurgents within the nation.



According to him, “Sunday 2nd February 2020 is declared a Special Prayer Walk by Christians in all the States of the Federation in the form of a procession to be led by States CAN Chairmen in their CAN Secretariats and pastors of churches in all churches in Nigeria”.

The Turkish government is planning to introduce a new law that will allow men accused of raping underage girls to avoid punishment by marrying their victims, a move which has outraged women's rights campaigners who say the law will pave the way for 'child exploitation and legitimize child marriage and statutory rape.'

The "marry your rapist" bill is set to be introduced to parliament at the end of the month. 

Although, the Turkey's opposition party, the Peoples' Democratic Party has called for the bill to be axed.

Suad Abu-Dayyeh, a campaigner for Equality Now, told The Independent:
      "I applaud the brave work of women’s rights campaigners in Turkey who are taking a stand against this discriminatory bill and pushing back again regressive forces that are seeking to remove current legal protections for girls.

“Similar 'marry-your-rapist' legal provisions have been on the statute books of countries across the Middle East and North Africa.

"Thanks to years of campaigning by women’s rights activists and lawmakers, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia, and Palestine have all removed these loopholes in recent years.

“Rather than attempting to introduce legislation that harms women's rights and protections, Turkish lawmakers should take heed of these advances in repealing gender discriminatory laws.”

The management of the Federal Polytechnic Offa, Kwara State led by Dr. Lateef  Olatunji has admonished the students of the institution, particularly, the newly admitted students to always dress morally and appropriately  as the school will never tolerate indecent dressing of any kind from the students, VAM News reports. 

This was contained in the rector's address to the newly admitted students made known to VAM News during the orientation program held on 22nd, January 2020 in 1000 capacity hall at the school permanent site. Dr. Lateef Olatunji, during his address, welcomes the new intakes to the fastest growing polytechnic and enjoins them to stay clear of any indecent act that can terminate their studentship on campus.

According to him: 
           "I urge you all to avoid all acts of indecencies and violence as the Management would deal decisively with any student found to be involved in anti-social behaviour. In addition, the Polytechnic Academic Board will not hesitate to withdraw any student who performs below expected standards in his or her academic work. You have been warned that offences like examination malpractices, cultism, sexual harassment, cyber-crime, indecent dressing and the likes are gross misconduct which attracts serious sanction"

"This Polytechnic attaches great importance to decent and modest dressing. Your dressing is an expression of who you are. 

Good dressing will add values to your personality, self-confidence and self-worth. The saying, “the way you dress is the way you will be addressed” is very instructive. 

The following are some of the things prohibited at the Polytechnic: wearing of dirty, tattered and crazy jeans, wearing of slippers, pulling down of trouser to the hips (sagging), tattooing of the body, piercing of nose or any part of the body except the ears (for female only), colouring of hair and attachments, wearing of revealing and over clinging clothes such as body hugs etc.

You are advised to adhere strictly with the recommended dress and personal code as violation will attract severe disciplinary action" The Rector added.

Similarly, Divisional Police Officer of Offa Local Government, speaking at the program advised the students to make good choice for themselves and never engage in anything that would get them to the police station. 

He said: 
          "Police station is like a hospital, once you get there, the story is always unpalatable and if you have ever been detained in a police station,it would be on a record and one day, someone would dig it. So make choices, finish here and go outside to make positive impact in order to be good alumni of this institution"

Also speaking at the orientation program, the polytechnic Directorate of Information, Public Relations and Protocol, Mr Olayinka Iroye sounds a severe warning to the students not to engage in cultism and other social vices. 

He therefore lays emphasis on indecent dressing adding that, the polytechnic will never condone immorality and marlians' dress style. 

He said: 
      "Cultism is an unholy act, please shun it, avoid it the way you will avoid a dangerous snake. This anti-social behaviour is a menace to the society. Join only clubs, associations or societies that are registered by the Directorate of Students’ Affairs. Be a good ambassador of your family. 

If you are caught associating yourself with any illegal group, you will not only be expelled, you will be handed over to the law enforcement agents for prosecution."
