No fewer than 300 people have reportedly died in Iran with a further 1,000 getting sick after consuming methanol thinking it will protect them against the coronavirus disease.

In respect to the reports on the effectiveness of hand sanitizer in combating coronavirus, social media posts across Iran have been awash recently with theories that industrial alcohol such as methanol could cure and prevent coronavirus.

Fox News reported that after some social media posts claimed that a British school teacher and others cured themselves of the coronavirus with whisky and honey, bootleggers started packaging industrial alcohol to Iranians, with the misconception that it prevents coronavirus, since the consumption of alcohol is banned in the Islamic country.

“Other countries have only one problem, which is the new coronavirus pandemic,” said Dr. Hossein Hassanian, an adviser to Iran’s Health Ministry disclosed.

“We have to both cure the people with the alcohol poisoning and also fight the coronavirus.”

But according health ministry, it is “Unfortunately in some provinces, including Khuzestan and Fars, deaths from drinking methanol has exceeded the number of deaths by the new coronavirus,” Hassanian said.

Iran has reported over 29,000 confirmed cases and more than 2,200 deaths from the virus, but the World Health Organization and some International experts, fear Iran may be under-reporting its cases.

The General Secretary, National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), Comrade Joe Ajaero, has threatened that the union would be forced to embark on strike to protect its members against COVID-19.

Ajaero made this known on Wednesday in a letter to the Minister of Power, Mr Sule Mamman, after he reported to work on March 23 from a trip to Germany and Egpyt.

He said the minister did not self isolate himself for the compulsory 14 days.

According to him, the minister will be solely responsible for the transmission of COVID-19 to any staff in Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

Ajaero said that by this action the minister failed to provide adequate precautionary measures to protect staff and would be responsible for his failure to comply with the Federal Government directive.

The letter read in part:
“Our attention has been drawn to the return of the Minister of Power, Sule Mamman, from his trip to Germany and Egypt while on the entourage of the Chief of Staff to the President.

“The minister despite the president’s directive to self-isolate reported at the office in the midst of agitation and complains from the staff at TCN Headquarters in Abuja.

“If not for the intervention of the union, there would have been pandemonium at the office, on March 23.

“In view of recent developments, the union wishes to state unequivocally that the minister will be held responsible for the transmission of COVID-19 to any staff in TCN.”

Ajaero said that the union was giving employers in the power sector whose staff constantly interface with customers and the public, 24-hours to put adequate precautionary measures in place to protect staff.

CrimeOndo LG Poll: SDP Condemns Kidnap Attempt On Chairmanship Candidate by Honbright(op): 5:45am On Mar 24, 2020
…Urges ODIEC, Police, Traditional rulers and Leaders to swing into action

THE Social Democratic Party, SDP, has condemned the alleged attempt kidnap on its Idanre local government candidate, Bankole Akinselure and the attack of innocent Idanre citizen on Monday evening by APC political thugs.

The party in a statement, signed by the chairman, said, the attack shows that the All Progressives Congress and Chairmanship Candidate of the party have become jittery over Bankyposal candidacy’s soaring popularity across the local government which signals “an impending inevitable electoral defeat for the APC at the April election.”

The statement read, "the attack was lunched this evening by the APC thugs led by the APC Idale lemikan ward councillorship candidate in person of Mr Betiku Akinwale a.k.a 10-10 in my visit to the SDP ward meeting. Him and his men came fully armed to disrupt our meeting and destroyed the canopy, break the chairs, beat our members and as well threatening to kidnap myself and my vice Chairman."

The APC thugs attempt to kidnap our flagbearer but failed, flogged and scattered everybody with cutlass and guns.

“The SDP however cautions the APC to note that there is a limit to what the people of Idanre local government, who have made up their minds to vote in Bankole as their next chairman, can stomach, particularly at this critical time.

“The SDP states that resorting to violence cannot help the APC in this election. This is so because Idanre LG is home to SDP and the people have made up their minds to replace APC government with Akinselure Bankole on April 18, and nothing can change that resolve.

“Our party therefore calls on the ODIEC, Police, traditional ruler(Kabiesi) and the leaders of the community to guarantee adequate security ahead of the election and ensure that the APC does not in any way, achieve its aim of disrupting the electoral process, knowing that it will be defeated.”

PoliticsCovid-19 : Ondo Rep Member, Adefisoye Counsels Constituents by Honbright(op): 3:50pm On Mar 22, 2020
By Tunde Olorungbotemi, Idanre

Following the fear of suspected case of the dreaded coronavirus in Ondo State, Rep.Tajudeen Adefisoye has counselled the constituents of Idanre/Ifedore Federal Constituency not to dismiss the dangers that the deadly corona virus could pose to human health.

Adefisoye encouraged his constituents and the good people of Ondo State at large to heed the expert advise of regular washing of hands with soap, social distancing and the use of hand sanitizers. He also urged his constituents that cannot afford to buy hand sanitizers to prepare the mixture of lime with the local ‘ogogoro’ drink, which he described as equally effective.

In a similar vein, Adefisoye has urged his constituents to avoid large gatherings of people that are more than 20, pending when a vaccine will be developed for the corona virus which is fast assuming pandemic status across the world.

Also, the lawmaker has counselled his constituents to avoid travels that are not compulsory, particularly inter-state journeys; in order to avoid having body contacts with carriers of the most deadly disease.

However, Adefisoye has appealed to parents in Idanre/Ifedore Federal Constituency to ensure that their children and wards whose schools have been shut on instruction of Ondo State government are kept indoor and not allowed to roam the streets.

He added that school children could become vulnerable to the dreaded Covid -19 in the course of roaming the streets where there is large gathering of people.

Meanwhile, in the unlikely event that any constituent of Idanre/Ifedore may be manifesting symptoms that are similar to that of Covid-19, Adefisoye has urged such individual to quickly visit the nearest government or private hospitals for appropriate medical attention.

Likewise, the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Army has advised anyone in Idanre/Ifedore Federal Constituency that may have recently returned from any of the high risk corona virus countries to observe two weeks self isolation.

He added that this advice of self isolation has become necessary so as to prevent the outbreak of Covid- 19 disease in Ondo State.

PoliticsCoronavirus: Buhari's Silence And Boko Haram Calmness - Busy Brain by Honbright(op): 6:54am On Mar 22, 2020
Could this be the sign that the world is gradually moving to the end or what is really happening. I asked myself! this has even gone beyond gradual process, if the world is moving to the end through this virus, it is moving with high acceleration. From China to the rest of the world.

Countries are closing boarders to halt movements. Economy at the lowest ebb. Sports, mosques, churches, market places, social gatherings, schools and colleges locked down. Who said this is not the sign to the end of the world?

I asked myself again with a deep breath.

I was actually brainstorming, if for example this lead to the judgement day, what could be regarded as my savings that would grant me salvation hereafter. Trying to recall my flaws and comparing to my good deeds. To be candid, I am a sinner like other person but I will make heaven.

Few seconds later, something whispered to my ears and said: "Busy Brain, stop that gothic thought. You have a long way to go and many dreams to fulfill. Don't let the world end now. Coronavirus has come and it would go by God's grace." It was the good spirit in me that gave me the courage and cleared my horrible thoughts. Swiftly, everything fled.

For the fact that am lonely, I couldn't just let go of some things. I was actually picking them one after the other. I was wondering why the whole China who has grown old with grey hairs in technologies could not find a substantial solution to the virus and US, the custodian of nuclear weapons like missile, drone could not deploy any to defeat corona virus. Italy, France, Spain death toll on the rise. The pellucid solution is a mere guess work of chloroquine, paracetamol, Vitamin C...etc. At this point, I realized I needed water to step down. What a pity. I shook my head.

I was not only sad but felt embarrassed that Nigerians could politicise a virus that doesn't recognize any political party. The cross carpeting and 2023 madness still remains a priority at this dire period. What a shame! Politicians are toying with a pandemic virus that has helped to kill Boko Haram. Since its outbreak, Boko Haram has remained calm and I think their back bones have stopped visiting them for the sake of corona virus. I doubt if the sponsors of Boko Haram members are Nigerians. Who knows?

Irrespective of the Country or Region the sponsors might have come from, they will never know peace. I prayed.

At that moment, I was in a maelstrom on why Buhari's silence should be headache. Many people calling for Buhari's head because he has not addressed the country since the outbreak is of no value. Buhari is not a medical expert. He cannot write his address himself. His speech would be prepared and that cannot change corona virus carriers' status to negative. What Nigerians need as information should come from Ministry of Health and National Centre for Disease Control and these bodies saddled with that responsibility have been doing absolutely well in sensitization, precaution measures and media orientation across the country. Whether Buhari addresses the country or not, the great task ahead goes beyond blame game.

Before I rounded up my lonesome adventure, Corona Virus is a clarion call on us...

PoliticsCovid-19: Osun Government Places Ban On All Public Gatherings- VAM News by Honbright(op): 7:39am On Mar 20, 2020
The Government of the State of Osun has placed a ban on all gatherings that would bring together 50 or more persons in the same place.

This measure takes immediate effect and will be in place until further notice.

The ban will affect all Schools in Osun, Churches, Mosques, Night Clubs and Sports arenas among others.

The government, which advised the citizenry not to panic, especially because no case has been recorded in the state so far, noted that it arrived at the decision it took after wide consultations with health professionals and stakeholders in the health sector over COVID-19.

In a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, Ismail Omipidan, the government noted that the ban became necessary following Federal Government's directive to ensure precautionary measures are taken to prevent the spread of the disease.

Besides, the government noted that the mere fact that few cases have been reported in its neighbouring states makes it imperative to act.

"As at 18th March 2020, the total number of cases as announced by the Honorable Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, stands at eight (cool, with one of the five (5) recent cases confirmed on Wednesday, in Ekiti State.

"Though we have not recorded any case of the deadly virus, as a responsible government, we must be prepared so that we are not taken by surprise. The corona virus scourge is a complex public health emergency, the type the world had never seen.

"Therefore, to protect our dear state, our children, and our economy will require our collective response and sacrifice. Government at both state and local government levels will lead but we will all need to do our bit to get through this bad patch.

"As a responsible and responsive government that places premium on the well-being of its people, we will protect our citizens from potential and actual threats.

"We also urge our people to dedicatedly observe the precautionary protocols of thorough washing of hands with soap and clean water and the use of hand sanitiser; observing social distance and avoiding large gatherings, and alerting the authority of any suspected case.

"Our Technical Action Committee is working round the clock to beef up the State's capacity for epidemiological control and management. We therefore call on citizens not to give in to undue panic" the statement added.

EducationNANS Impersonators Exposed, Nigerian Students Beware(photos) by Honbright(op): 6:33am On Mar 20, 2020
By OLADIMEJI UTHMAN ”DAN FODIO”

The attention of the leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students {NANS} South West Zone under the auspices of Comrade Kappo Olawale Samuel has been propelled towards some impersonators and unscrupulous individuals who have been fictitiously appointing some sets of students under the disguise as an office holder in our great association, Voiceairmedia has received.

See full press statement below:

Upon their recent undue appointments by one of the impersonators known as Comrade Akinwunmi Akeem Akinshola who acclaimed himself as the Deputy Coordinator of the South West Zone of NANS even without his spirit nor body at the convention ground at Lagos State College of Health Technology, Yaba (LASCOHEALTH) which produced the leadership of the Zone on Saturday, 7th of December 2019.

In lieu of this defacing acts from the power tussled impersonators, the office of the duely elected and sworn in Deputy Coordinator of NANS South West Zone in person of Comrade Oladimeji Uthman seizes this opportunity to call the attention of the entire Nigerian Students populace across all institutions in South West region particularly the Gateway State {Ogun} to beware and keep distance from these set of impersonators and appointees from their ends who operate in the capacity of NANS South West Zone at large.

Furthermore, this is to enlighten and inform the students populace in the South West region to abstain from these set of impersonators and not to have any form of official business or relations with them because whosoever does this, is at his or her own peril.

Though, necessary steps have been taken and the issue has been duly reported to the law enforcement agencies in all South Western states and they would face the wrath of the law soon.

However, NANS South West Zone assures the entire students populace not to give room to any form of impersonation that could cause harm or vandalize the image of NANS as a reputable and responsible body and also calling the attention of security personnel in the states that falls under the region respectively to be at alert as the interest of our students is second to non under our leadership.

Most importantly, the genuinely elected and inaugurated leadership of NANS South West Zone {Zone D}, uses this medium to send a note of warning to these set of impersonators to desist from this unlawful act as information has it that their purported inauguration was also disrupted and unapproved by the institution management of the self acclaimed impersonating Coordinator.

PoliticsCovid-19: Akeredolu Shuts Down All Varsities, Poly And Others In Ondo by Honbright(op): 7:20pm On Mar 19, 2020
My dear good people of Ondo state, as you are aware, the world is currently experiencing an outbreak of corona virus (COVID-19) infection. This is a highly infectious disease spreading all over the world.

The disease is easily transmitted from one person to another. Our country Nigeria has not been spared of this attack.

In the last few weeks, the fear of its presence in our country has been confirmed.

The major symptoms of this viral attack are fever, cough, sore throat, sneezing, runny nose and difficulty with breathing. Any individual with these symptoms especially those who have recently travelled to areas where there is a serious outbreak should embark on self-isolation for a minimum of 14 days.

Such individuals should also in the interest of our corporate existence, report in any of our healthcare facilities nearest to them or call any of our emergency lines that will be released for assistance if they develop any of the symptoms.

On our part, this administration had taken the following steps to ensure that the health system is ready to manage the situation effectively in collaboration with the federal government and our development partners. These steps include:
Equipping the state infectious disease hospital as a treatment center for the disease.

Upgrading the state disease surveillance network to be able to identify cases and ensure proper community surveillance.

Roll out a sustained media campaign on the COVID-19 infection.

Ensure a seamless collaboration with federal government and other development partners.

To further strengthen our capacity to respond effectively to this emergency, we have set up a high level inter-ministerial committee to coordinate state’s response to the COVID-19 challenge.

The committee which is chaired by the hon commissioner for health, has members cutting across relevant institutions and MDAS.

SportsMan Arrested For Digging Up Legend Kobe Bryant And Gigi's Grave by Honbright(op): 7:32am On Mar 19, 2020
A man has been arrested for digging up a gravesite reported to belong to Kobe Bryant and daughter Gianna Bryant.

Back in February, Dailymail reported that the gravesite in Newport Beach is where Kobe and Gigi were laid to rest.

However, last Friday, a man was arrested and placed in handcuffs after he allegedly tried to dig up the gravesite.

MTO reports that "the man snuck onto the private gravesite with tools and began digging. Police say that the man peeled back the grass and began digging - and he dug fairly deep into the ground. "

The publication has now released "exclusive images" showing police putting the man in handcuffs and taking photos of the crime scene.

The unidentified man had been seen wearing knee pads, and carrying equipment that he used to dig through the area where he believed Kobe and Gianna had been laid to rest.

"He appeared to focus his efforts on one particular corner of the area and what appeared to be rectangular cutting marks could be seen through the grass," the publication adds.

EducationASUU Strike: Union Describes FG Incompetency A Call For Indefinite Action by Honbright(op): 12:20am On Mar 17, 2020
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has today revealed that the Federal Government has not showed any sign of settling the issues that made the Union to embark on the two-week warning strike.

The Union is demanding that rather than force universities to embrace the IPPS system, the Federal Government should work at addressing the deficiency and decay in the university system.

The union also warned that it would sanction its members who had gone ahead to enrol in the system, despite instructions from the national body.

Both ASUU and FG were to reconvene today but the scheduled meeting became void after the Senior Staff Association of Universities, SSANU, also joined in the rejection of IPPS.

As it stands, the ASUU nationwide strike is very much ongoing and progressing across the universities in Nigeria.

Nigerian students in fear mood that ASUU might embark on an indefinite Strike 'if' FG continues to display reluctancy.

BusinessDollar Scarcity Looming As Naira Trades At N375 To A Dollar, Nigerians React by Honbright(op): 9:31am On Mar 12, 2020
There's a panic in the Nigerian market following a scarcity of dollars which came after market speculators began stocking up their dollar reserves.

At the beginning of the year, the Naira traded at N360 to a dollar.

However following the crash in oil price, the naira is now trading at N375 to a dollar in Lagos and between N370 and N372 in Abuja.

Nigeria’s Eurobonds due 2047 dropped for the sixth straight day on Wednesday March 11 according to Bloomberg, pushing investors into dumping the notes over fears of a naira devaluation after global oil prices plunged this week.

Yields on the dollar securities jumped 28 basis points to 10.4% with currency speculators now betting that the central bank of Africa’s top oil producer will be forced to allow the naira to weaken.

While traders told The Cable that they are waiting for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) weekly intervention of up to $210 million into the forex market to support the naira, the apex bank's Governor, Godwin Emefiele on Wednesday announced that they will protect the economy from the negative fall out of the sudden drop in oil prices.

Ainu Gwadabe, President of Bureau de Change Operators of Nigeria in Lagos said;

"The fall in oil markets is a cause for panic in the foreign exchange market.
“The situation has created unhealthy economic behavior like hoarding and speculation.”

Some People have also advised Nigerians to buy and stock up dollars as the exchange rate might go high.

EducationASUU Strike:why LASU Is Yet To Join As FG Describes Industrial Action Illegal by Honbright(op): 6:32am On Mar 12, 2020
By Bright Olorungbotemi

Ongoing nationwide warning strike embarked by the Academic staff union of universities, Lagos state University chapter has opened up the real reason they are yet to join the industrial action as the federal government on Wednesday, announced the ASUU decision to withdraw their services is illegal and corruption, Voiceairmedia reports.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Lagos State University (ASUU-LASU) Chapter has revealed reasons it is yet to take a stand over the ongoing two-week warning strike.

The ASUU-LASU Chairman, Dr. Ibrahim Bakare, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos that academic activities were ongoing in the university as his chapter was yet to join the two-week warning strike.

ASUU had on Monday declared a two-week warning strike over the Federal Government’s refusal to pay lecturers not enrolled in the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) and the non-implementation of the 2009 agreement, among other issues.

“It is only our congress that will direct us on what to do. Our colleagues should not be intimidated. They should remain available for our students.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has described the ongoing two-week warning strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as illegal and an act of corruption.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, made the government position known while fielding questions from State House correspondents at the end of the meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

The meeting, which lasted for over seven hours, was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday.

Ngige, however, expressed shock over the ASUU decision to withdraw their services, saying that the mandatory strike notice was not given by the union and hence making the industrial action illegal.

“I was shocked on Monday when I read and saw some people coming out of the university that lecturers have gone on strike.

“I have my children in Nigerian university and I saw them and it is not a very cherry news. They didn’t give us the mandatory notice before going on strike. So for a start, this strike is illegal.

“They said it is a warning striking but there is nothing like warning strike. A strike is withdrawal of services for which you are being paid.

l
“Then, the question will arise, if you don’t go to work, do you want to be paid? Is it not corruption? So this is the dilemma,’’ he said.

“By next week, the congress will have its meeting as there are quite a number of pending issues concerning the welfare of our academic members that need to be addressed.
