PoliticsONDO 2020: PDP Is Showing Lazy Opposition — Ojogo, Information Comm by Honbright(op): 7:15am On Jan 02, 2020
...Akeredolu’s projects ‘re 2020 campaign points

By Dayo Johnson

MR. Donald Ojogo is the Information and Orientation Commissioner in Ondo State, In this interview, Ojogo speaks on the people’s expectations and government desires for 2020; he equally faulted claims of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state ahead of this year’s governorship election.

The governorship election is due this year, what should the people of Ondo state expect?

The year 2020 is the year of so many expectations. It will be a year of expectation from the electorate and the people of Ondo state. It is also the year of desires on the part of the government because there are several things that are ongoing that should be taken to the destination of our minds.

There are so many things that the government is trying to initiate in form of projects. 2020 is promising on all sides.

The first and most important thing we desire from God is a long life and peace for all to witness those good things in 2020.

Reports have it that many ongoing projects will be inaugurated by governor Akeredolu this year. Is that not political or is it coincidental?

Well, if you say it is coincidental, you are correct and if you say it is strategic on the part of the government to complete them as you have said yes we ought to have completed them before now because our desire was not just to keep them in abeyance, No. I don’t think so but if you say so, you might not be totally wrong.

What is even wrong if we commission them and make them our campaign points?

Fine, because one of the reasons this government came into power is to be able to bring development closer to the people and if there are one or two things that have been initiated by the government in form of projects and they are likely to be commissioned in an election year, so be it.

It is a plus to any government to have tangible things to point out when it is the time to campaign. So we thank God that we have a lot of things to point out during our campaign period.

The opposition PDP in the state is of the opinion that much should not be expected from your government because it has failed the people of Ondo State.

Well, I never expected anybody in the PDP to say anything different from what you have said he reportedly said.

I wouldn’t expect anybody to say anything different.

The government that has within three years taken very courageous steps in terms of developmental initiatives that have surpassed the previous years of PDP government that was in place, how would PDP person commend. No right-thinking PDP man will clap for this government. That is the truth.

So, if they are not clapping for us, we won’t be angry and we are not even taking it in any negative form. That is the duty of the opposition and if they are not saying that, who will say it?

But the truth of the matter is that whoever is saying that, is just trying to echo the mindset of the frustrated minority.

Whatever they are saying is the voice of the frustrated minority.

The PDP spokesman was emphatic about the level of transparency of your government in the execution of projects.

If he acknowledged the fact that projects are executed, that’s fair enough of him. But the other leg which, he intends to know much about if the projects executed are not transparently done, the books are there.

Why do we have the ministries of Budget and finance?

Let them go and verify. They can take maximum advantage and leverage on the freedom of information law.

Let them come out with facts and figures. Our books are clean and transparent enough. This government is courageously accountable to the people. So if they feel some projects have been done, I salute their courage for saying that.

The other leg where they feel there was no transparency or accountability in the course of the execution of those projects, it is left for them.

We are serious in delivering good governance and we cannot add the burden of trying to get facts for the opposition. That cannot be added to the duties of the government. They must do that. They should not be lazy.

Won’t governance be affected as governor Akeredolu will be so busy attending to more political engagements this year?

I can assure you that no government activities will be affected in any way. Since 2016 that government came into place alongside major political activities in 2015 and 2019, nothing was affected in governance and 2020 will not be different.

The payment of salaries will not be affected in 2020.

Governor Akeredolu prioritises the welfare of workers in the state and that resolve is strong and unwavering in him and we have all inculcated the belief that the welfare of workers is paramount.

Politics cannot take the shine of the welfare of workers in the state, he said.

PoliticsSave Our Local Govt:letter To Governor Oyetola-de-moon Speaks (read Full Letter) by Honbright(op): 4:59pm On Dec 29, 2019
SAVE OUR LOCAL GOVERNMENTS FROM DEMOCRATIC EXTINCTION, IN AN OPEN LETTER TO THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF OSUN, OGBENI GBOYEGA OYETOLA

Your Excellency,

With utmost respect and unreserved humility, I welcome you back home from the holly land and I pray your wishes be granted.

Sir, I deem it imperative to call on the Governor, leaders, elders and general stakeholders of various communities in Osun State, mostly those within the ruling party to rise up in the interest of the masses and for the protection of democracy at the sixty-four local government areas in Osun from poor governance and democratic extinction.

Mr Governor, our dear elders and stakeholders, I understand you have in diverse capacity struggled and laboured earnestly for the development of our dear state since its creation, therefore I want to believe as a matter of fact that the transformation going on in the state is an answer to your prayers, a relief to your struggle and a reward to your age long labour. My desire is for Osun State to stand tall in the committees of State in terms of political stability, human cum economic growth and development.

As a journalist and campaigner for good governance, I wish to register my displeasure over the spate of local government mal-administration in the state and also wish to slate forward a corrective measure to enhance good leadership and democratic sustenance at the third tier arm of government.

In recent time, more than twenty-seven (27) local government parliaments have raised issues of mal-administration against their leadership (genuinely or counterfeit) but we have openly recorded up to five administrative rancor through petitions, Vote of no confidence and impeachment from five different local government areas in Osun despite being of same political party across board (Ayedaade, Olorunda, Osogbo South and Olorunda North as case study).

Your Excellency, if truly Osun is indeed interested in parliamentary system of government at our local government areas, your action is highly needed by reviewing the guidelines on which the local governments are operating and adopt home-based training for all elected councillors across the state or better still the system be reversed after the expiration of their current tenure by 2021.

Despite the fact that the parliamentary system is new to our local governments, Osun can as usual lead by good example for other states in running parliamentary system across all local governments in Nigeria but the motive behind its establishment by your predecessor is gradually being defeated by the way of practising it in Osun, and it is affecting the ruling party.

Apart from power play, political fractionalization and personal interest within the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Osun which will be one of your major obstacles to your re-election bid, the leadership of our local governments must be your utmost concern as it is  the closest government to the grassroots; if you wish to gain the heart of the masses. Relationship between your leadership and the state Assembly, party Congress and local government election should top your political agenda (discussion for another day).

Mr Governor, it is a clear fact that every councillor (including Chairman) belongs to one political dynasty or the other, identifying the owner of each dynasty and their interest in your government is another preventing measure to this brouhaha.

Sir, as I am bringing this letter to a close, permit me to say in my opinion that you've started on a good footing and I hope you will sustain the momentum if the needed drastic actions are taken by you as at when due to correct some abnormalities not minding of stepping on toes, your timely action is highly needed. (Obaseki of Edo and Ambode of Lagos on my mind).

CelebritiesDayo Amusa Reacts After Being Dragged For Saying She Enjoys Having Sex by Honbright(op): 4:13pm On Dec 29, 2019
Actress Dayo Amusa has fired back at trolls after being dragged for publicly admitting that she enjoys having sex.

The heated exchange came after the Nollywood actress shared her thoughts about sex and the stereotype attached to women having sex with different partners.

Dayo Amusa wrote;
The ish am about to raise here now might probably offend some of you, even if it result to an unfollown, Iyen gan tun nice. Proceed with caution

I enjoy having sex. I mean good sexual intercourse. You know the thing that people do that is acceptable in society if you're married, or if you've been in a partnership with somebody for sometime but most definitely not acceptable if you have sex with somebody on the first date or if you have sex somebody that you don't know all that well. Why can't people just have sex for the sake of having sex?

Why can't people just have sex for the sake of havings ex?

Why the actual Bleep does a woman that enjoys having sexual relationships with a partner or partners automatically make people jump to conclusion that the woman doesn't respect herself?

Why does a woman have to justify herself?

I don't give a Bleep if you sleep with 200 people or you've only ever been with 1 or none. I don't a Bleep if you're sleeping with two, three or twenty partners. I don't give a Bleep if you have sex on the first date or wait until the 30th date. Want to know why I do't give a Bleep?

Because it's none of fucking business.

You know your body, and at the end of the day it's your body therefor you make the rules.

Why are women being shamed for having sexual relationships?

The sad part is majority of it is women shaming other women.

SUPPORT EACH OTHER FOR Bleep SAKES. SEX IS A NATURAL HUMAN INTERACTION. Bleep who you want, when you want, where you want. You don't owe an explanation to anybody. And you surely are not 'disrepectin yourself' because you enjoy having sex. Be transparent, and educate yourself before expressing such stupidity. But make sure you are playing safe o. Make safe choices.

The actress was however forced to react to certain comments which attacked her career and accused her of not being a good role model and representative of the Yoruba culture.

Education#buhari At 77: NAPS Frowns At Discrimination Against HND Holders by Honbright(op): 2:59pm On Dec 17, 2019
....NAPS demands complete removal of discrimination against HND holders

The leadership of National Association of Polytechnic Student's (NAPS), Ably led by the National President Elect  Activist Sunday A. Asuku a student of Kaduna Polytechnic, from the department of Chemical Engineering  blew hot this morning at the NUJ secretariat Kaduna state chapter.

Following the recent Development by the house of Representatives were the bill to abolish dichotomy was sponsored by Hon. Ali Isa from Gombe state and the Hon. Edward Pwajok from plateau state which passed second reading since April 2017,Hon. Pwajok said, the discrimination against the Hnd holders had no moral justification and that it will make the international community look down on the status of the Educational institutions in the country.

Furthermore Pwajok said there are a lot of segregation at employment level as those with first degree are placed on grade level 8 while those with Hnd are place on grade level 6 or 7, These high rate of discrimination also reflect in salaries as some organizations pay Bscholders #100,000 at entry level while Hnd holders gets #70,000 at entry level.

It was perceived that there is need for review of the Polytechnic act in order to fasttrack the abolishment of the old rugged Dichotomy,  special thanks to President Muhamadu Buhari who finally signed the bill into law.

However, it is so appalling and pathetic that the bill that has been long  signed into law is yet to be implemented, that gives the leadership of NAPS serious worries as the said dichotomy still hunts Hnd holders.

The National Secretariat of NAPS in a statement made available to VAM News today, received the sad news of the exclusion of Hnd Holders from the On-going Promotion Examination which start today (17th Dec. - 20th Dec. 2019) at eagle square Abuja.

The promotion Examination which is meant for all civil Servants on grade level 14 migrating to grade 15 and beyond still discriminate against Nigeria Polytechnic graduates, thereby the ministry of Education is  hiding under the flimsy excuse  that they are yet to get the implementation Circular/Memo from the Head of Service.

We appeals to President Muhamadu Buhari who Clocks 77yrs today to consider and monitor the implementation of the bill that abolish the Dichotomy between Hnd and Bsc as the rate/degree of discrimination will continue to have negative effect on the growth of Nigeria Economy,  Particularly in the era which Mr President have decided to prioritize  made in Nigeria products which lead to the closure of our borders.

We urge Mr President to bring to book every saboteurs and ensure the complete abolishment of Dichotomy. It is also advisable and encouraging to state fresh promotion exercise/Examination that will capture Hnd Holders migrating from level grade 14 to level grade 15 and beyond.

The leadership of NAPS under the leadership of Activist Sunday A. Asuku Heartly Celebrate  President Muhamadu Buhari on the Occasion of his 77th birthday, may your reign pilot the country to her promised land.

EducationAdo Poly Rector, Oladebeye Reacts Over Agitations For SUG Election by Honbright(op): 3:10pm On Dec 14, 2019
...SUG election to hold immediately Academic activities resume

The assurance was given when the Leadership of the Senate arm of National Association of Polytechnic Students, (NAPS), proactively swung into action after numerous calls from students.

The Senate president of NAPS, Dio Oghale Emeka Rex, in a release on his official Facebook page confirmed the Management said the SUG was only suspended as against the rumour it was banned.

He further said, the Rector gave his assurances that the suspension would be lifted immediately the school resumes academic activities.

THE RELEASE READS:
“The Leadership of NAPS Senate received in good fate the online calls for swift intervention on the ban placed on the SUG of FEDPOLY Ado-Ekiti.

“As a revolutionary in the scientific struggle of Aluta, to balance the online journalism, the Senate placed a call across to the SUG President who confirmed the story to be true but noting that it’s not recent as claimed and also the school is not on session now.

“On the other part of implementing the 3Cs of Aluta, the Senate also on a phone call reached out to the Rector of the institution (Dr Oladebeye).

Another Part of release reads, “on our conversation with the Rector, the following were noted and resolved,

•That the management didn’t ban students union, rather placed it on temporary suspension following the crisis during the SUG poll as sponsored by enemies of the polytechnic.

•That the outgone Senate President of NAPS who’s now the Incumbent President of NAPS Adekanbi Sunday has visited the institution on a fact finding in regards to it, and that the management will uplift the suspension when the institution resumes academic activities.

•That the management has never and is not planning to increase the tuition fee.

•That election will be conducted again as the management has not and will not set up a caretaker committee.”

“The Rector who appreciated the Senate Arm for investigating issues thoroughly noted that he’s also an alumnus of the institution and for any reason he can’t undermine students unionism as the management cannot function without the leadership of the students.

“He uses same vein to congratulate the newly elected leadership of the NAPS Senate led by my noble self as he stated that he has been following the the NAPS leadership transition that brought on board this current leadership and promised the unflinching support of the management team in building an egalitarian society through working in synergy.”

EducationNAPS Discredits Attention Seekers On Ado Poly SUG Suspension(photos) by Honbright(op): 12:03pm On Dec 14, 2019
THE National association of polytechnics students (NAPS) leadership ably led by the National President elect Activist Sunday A. Asuku from the department of Chemical Engineering HND11 blew hot upon the report that some mischief makers who are in search of cheap attention threatened to close the institution.

While speaking with newsmen, it is on record that as the former Senate President of NAPS, my team was fully on ground to observe the election which was conducted by APECO, the report gathered was that there were irregularities, the number of votes counted was far beyond the accredited voters which of course will be in favour of a candidate and definitely against another, the APECO finally declared the election inconclusive resulting from the said irregularities, the leading side took on rampage and demanded that the result be announced and the winner be declared, immediately the report got to the management, the Rector of the institution Dr Hephzibah Oladebeye rapidly summourned an emergency meeting with the security, National student bodies and the management staff where it was unainimously agreed that the electioneering process be suspended in order not to cause any closure that will affect the exams which was to commence in two weeks time, the management upon seeing students advancing to the faculty of the opposition immediately call for the vacation of students from campus and resume back on Sunday prior to the commencement of exams on monday.

It is well understood that the Rector has done well in averting the coming crisis, as much as we love the union and Wouldn't want anything to affect it, we must equally understand that it is only when the school is running then union can operate not when the school is shut down!

In the late 2017, upon my emergence as the Senate President of NAPS, i visited same Adopoly when students went on rampage resulting from the poor state of school medical centre which claimed the life of a student, the then Rector insisted that students must pay huge damages or NO EXAM, it took the intervention of NAPS and the then NANS PRO Comr. ID Aluta to water down the huge amount students were to pay and ensure the quick resumption of academic activities.

The leadership of NAPS hereby once again applaud the Rector Dr. Hephzibah Oladebeye who did everything humanly possible to avert the seen crisis.

However, the SUG activities was suspended by the management amidst security threat on campus, the leadership of NAPS have equally pleaded with the management and security agencies to please find a better time to lift the suspension when the atmosphere is calm enough.

In a statement signed by Activist Sunday A. Asuku(GCNPS), National President Elect(NAPS),

Finally, we advise fellow Nigeria students to remain calm, resolute and law abiding.

EducationNAPS Demands Re-opening Of BIDA Polytechnic by Honbright(op): 10:53pm On Dec 12, 2019
....WHERE TWO ELEPHANTS FIGHTS, THE GRASS SUFFERS......

The leadership of National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) appeal to both the management and ASUP FPB chapter to shift grounds and consider the suffering students.

Activist Sunday A. Asuku, the National President Elect said in a statement while addressing the media in IMT Enugu during his working visit to the institute, Strike actions and other vices that interrupt academic calenders are best described as deliberate wastage of time and destiny, it is certain that when two mighty elephants combats, the grass there suffers it all.

The teeming students of Federal polytechnic Bida, Niger state deserves the best and should not be made to suffer what they know not, it is obvious that some students cant meet up with service any longer due to age bracket, some have engaged in shady business while some go back home and become liabilities courtesy of the ugly delay, all these won't deny the management and staff of same institution from getting their full salaries and allowances thereby leaving the fate of Nigeria students hanging.

The leadership of NAPS passionately appeal to the conscience of the titans to allow our fellow students write their exams and as well allow the free flow of academic activities on campus, while activities are on-going, the management and ASUP should continue with dialogue and invite external bodies to mediate where neccessary, NYSC wont admit strike as a reason to allow any student above 30yrs go for service, who then will advocate for the helpless students?

We urge the newly democratically elected ASUP President to swing into action as a matter of urgency and curb the excesses affecting Nigeria students.

In a press statement signed by Activist Sunday A. Asuku (GCNPS), National President Elect (NAPS) also crave the indulgence of all stakeholders, community elders, state and Federal Government to rescue the glowing glory of the institution before it's too late.

PoliticsSuspension Of Strike Without Electricity Is An Assault To Nigerians - One Class by Honbright(op): 2:50pm On Dec 12, 2019
Comrade Olorungbotemi Tunde Bright, One Voice, the Publisher of VAM Online Newspaper made an appeal to the Federal Government of Nigeria to listen and pay adequate attention to the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) leadership in a statement at a press conference held in Lagos.

Olorungbotemi call on the Federal Government to look at the effect of the strike on Nigeria’s economy at a time like this.

As many Small and Medium Scale Enterprises are the ones at the loosing end; increasing the sufferings of the poor masses.
l
“It is unethical as a nation with a developing capacity to be in a dilemma of total blackout despite the nemesis engraved in it repercussions. The lacadastic altitude of the government to the electricity workers is unpalatable to humanity.”

The Chairman of NUEE, Federal Capital Territory Chapter, Godfrey Aba, said the union were at the ministry to protest the non-payment of severance package to members who were employees of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria.

Recall the union embarked on an indefinite strike on Wednesday at the end of a 21-day ultimatum issued to the government concerning some working conditions in the sector. He further accused the government of doing nothing throughout the period the ultimatum lasted.

Suspension Of The Industrial Action:
What a goodnews, but according to my research they brought the light about fifteen minutes within the early hours of thursday morning, even though the reasons are yet to be made public as i speak.” and imagine a private owned establishment is embarking on a strike to the detriment of it's customers and subscribers. Although, we understand that the Government are the regulators of the sector.

Olorungbotemi added that, “It is on this note i urge the Federal Government to consider every Nigerian at this crucial time of the festive period, majority of the less privileged citizens make use of electricity even though it is not stable; one day we shall get it right in this nation.

I applaud the electricity workers’ union for taking Nigeria first in shifting grounds and enjoin the Federal Government not to take their negotiation for granted and desist from making industrial actions. It is disgusting that the only language our government understand is 'Protest/Strike' before sorting issues that matter to National Interest.

Nigerians desirous of a growth in the power sector, we need an efficient stable electricity, our government and the NUEE officials should work together to give us the best according to what we deserve as a great nation, and what is obtainable in other part of the globe" he said.

The house proceeded to the constitution of the Communique Drafting Committee (CDC) with the nomination of Comrade Abidoye Omololu Victor (CASTRO) as Chairman of the CDC who in turn rejected the nomination stating that he is no longer a student and that a student should be appointed instead. The Communique Drafting Committee (CDC) was then unanimously appointed by the entire house and was announced by the Convention Chairman. The house appointed Olayiwola Taiwo (OYO) as Chairman, CDC. Lawal Qudus (LAGOS) as Secretary, CDC. and Rahmon Opeyemi (OSUN) as Member, CDC.

After the formation of the CDC, the entire house unanimously agreed to proceed with the Election. Christianity EtcDon’t Mess Up Your Chance Of A Good Christmas By Having A Fling? by Honbright(op): 7:43am On Dec 08, 2019
Heaven only knows what intriguing capers lovers will be up to this festive period.

With all the disappointment we’ve had since the beginning of the year, looking into our bags of tricks and coming up with something cheerful, looks a bit daunting. But look we must – after all, it is Christmas, a season of being merry.

Gloria told me she was still licking the wounds from last Christmas’ nightmare. She’d planned to spend it abroad with her partner.

Unfortunately, something came up and he had to cancel his trip. “You know how it is with these businessmen”, said Gloria, a banker.

“The nod he was expecting from government to start a multi-million Naira project hadn’t come and he would be foolish to take any trip until it materialized.

Since we’d booked the flight, he urged me to go alone, especially since I would be attending my niece’s wedding”.

“One of the advantages of flying first class is that your chances of meeting spare-
parts sellers, travelling to order new purchases with their hard currency tied round their waists, is virtually non-existence.

Instead, you’re likely to meet top of the range chief executives and business tycoons on short trips either to clinch yet another mega-deal or to take a well-deserved rest for a few days.

As soon as I got inside the plane, I found myself seated next to a vulnerable looking middle-aged businessman.

Naturally, we got chatting during the flight and the trip took an interesting turn as the man turned out to be very intelligent and friendly.

When the duty-free trolley was wheeled to where we sat, he looked interestingly at a couple of very expensive perfumes then turned to me: “I’m so hopeless at choosing perfumes”, he said, showing me what he’d got. `Can you make some selection for me?’

I like the one you’re wearing and I trust your judgement.”

“Of course, I was flattered. I helped him make a few selections and he paid for his purchase. He then gave me two of the perfumes as a `thank you gesture for helping him out. I was really surprised but I thanked him all the same, quickly putting my loot in my hand luggage.

“After we cleared customs, a driver was waiting to take him whilst I looked around for a taxi.

Chidi, that’s his name, offered me a lift and I accepted eagerly, thankful that the service flat that Toye, my partner, always got for me was in the best part of the city. The fridge would be well-stocked and other goodies would have been provided.

“Chidi looked impressed when he saw me to the flat. The least I could do was offer him a drink which he readily accepted. He quickly downed it, told me he had to go to his hotel to freshen up and he was sure I wanted to freshen up too.

But would I want dinner later in the evening?

Over dinner, I mentioned my niece’s wedding which was the next day and he offered to send me his car.

The car was to later bring me back to his place after the wedding, with any of my friends I wanted entertained. It was a real lively day and he spared no expenses in making sure we had fun.

“It was inevitable that we started an affair. Chidi is the sort of man very few women say no to – he is what you call a smoothie! He was in my flat two days to Christmas, along with a few of his friends, when the door-bell rang. Thinking it was yet another guest, I opened the door.

My jaw nearly hit the floor when I saw Toye smiling at me. He had a few free days on hi hands now that he’d gotten the nod he was waiting for and he’d come to surprise me by spending Christmas with me. I silently led him to the living room of the flat he’d paid for and there was Chidi, sipping champagne from the fridge, playing host by asking Toye what he wanted to drink.

One look at my face, and he quickly twigged on to what was going on. But he was hardly the type to scurry out of a room faced with opposition – he simply carried on with his drink. My friends, poor things, were nervous and that more than gave the game away.

“I’m glad you’re all having fun”, Toye said.

“I just came in from the airport actually. I will quickly go back to the hotel, to freshen up and come back. With a non-committal kiss on my forehead he calmly walked away, not portraying the hurt he must have felt.

A man who’d lavished love and money on his lover of over three years, walked into the territory he’d secured for her, only to find another man eating the fruits of his labour!

“So, here is another Christmas round the corner and I don’t have a regular guy- Toye is a tough act to beat. I wrote him a letter of apology and told him I didn’t expect our affair to continue.

He didn’t even bother to reply. I must have hurt him too deeply.

“Why did he appear on the scene all of a sudden that fateful day?

Did one of my so-called friends phone to tip him off?

It was very unlike him to spring a surprise like that on anyone. Why was he sure I would be in the flat?

He never even phoned from the airport that he’d arrived.

“My advice to readers this yuletide?

Akeem Amosun told reporters that the decision to moving from ANN to PDP would help him realize his political aspiration.

Adebutu welcomed the defectors, saying that the coalition became necessary as recent elections held in the country are being militarized.

He said:
“Our opponents are wicked, therefore, we need to be united. The nature of elections as seen throughout the federation are now being militarized brazenly.

“The forthcoming elections can only be won by landslide, therefore, I urge all parties to stand united and coalesce as one body so that when they come with their thugs from Lagos we shall resist them.

“The APC government in the state lack competence and compassion. They can’t do anything without getting approval from Lagos.

PoliticsAkeredolu Emphasizes The Need For Varsities To Prioritize Skill Acquisitions by Honbright(op): 9:21pm On Dec 04, 2019
Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu,SAN has emphasized the need for Universities and other tertiary institutions to prioritize skill acquisitions alongside the acquisition of certificates, VAM News has learnt.

The Governor said the practice of acquiring certificates without the skills and knowledge to solve problems cannot be equated with capacity.

Arakunrin Akeredolu, who delivered the 20th Founders' Day Anniversary Lecture of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, on Wednesday, said the acquisition of certificates should be evident in the capacity to engage challenges and break new grounds to accommodate the inherent dynamism in human affairs.

The Governor, who lamented the embarrassing presence of a multitude of unemployed youths in the polity, called for an urgent review of the current practices.

While pointing out the errors that is often made, Akeredolu said the society usually mistake being lettered to be the sole purpose of education, adding that the ability to read and write only opens doors for opportunities.

He said:
”Proficiency in an official language of the State confirms elitism, not capacity. Being knowledgeable in specific areas of knowledge is an advantage. The needs of a society should be emphasized in a curriculum of training.

”A properly trained citizen is an asset to the community. An untrained compatriot is a perennial burden. A system of instruction must be purposeful; it must be designed to achieve an end. Acquisition of knowledge confers potential ability status on a people. Its application actualizes dreams and prevents untoward occurrences.”

Governor Akeredolu said universities in Nigeria will only contribute meaningfully to the development of the country if there is a remarkable change in attitude.

”Our universities must redirect their energies to peculiar areas of research, which will be beneficial to the environment. Until this is done, the tragic joke continues,” Akeredolu said.

While congratulating the graduating students, the Governor asked them to  consider the acquisition of their certificates as basic, saying that they need to acquire new skills to survive at this current period.

He saluted the vision of late Pa Adebayo Adefarati for establishing the university, adding that the state must ensure that the noble idea continues to grow.

In a press release signed by Olabode Richard Olatunde Special Assistant to the Governor (New Media), ”I am not oblivious of the significant strides already made by this great institution. I must, however, nudge you not to be complacent.

EducationTuition Fee Hike: NAUS Threatens Nationwide Protests by Honbright(op): 11:54am On Dec 03, 2019
...VC canvasses deregulation of education sector

National Association of University Students (NAUS) has threatened to hit the streets over the high fees charged by universities across the country, VAM NewsOnline reports.

It said the measure could increase the number of dropouts in no distant time. In a statement in Ado Ekiti yesterday, NAUS National Vice President, South West, Comrade David Aridiogo Aruson, said there might be nationwide protests in all universities that decided to put heavy financial burdens on students through obnoxious fees.

The students warned the managements of universities to stop transferring the burden of underfunding by governments to students who should enjoy their right to education.

They students called for immediate reduction in acceptance and tuition fees payable in universities to avert confrontation with the students’ body across the nation.

While speaking at the press conference, Aridiogo said it was pathetic that universities’ managements hide under underfunding to introduce all manners of fees that could deprive children of the poor necessary education.“In Ekiti State University, acceptance fee has increased from N70,000 to N100,000. The medical and law students are to pay N150,000.

“Beyond government’s inefficiency, the management of various universities in the country, especially in Ekiti, involving in evil activities with the introduction of levies and fees that are far outside their scope, all in the name of sourcing funds despite that it is expected of government to fund universities.

“We condemn in totality this trend in our universities and demand the abolition of alien fees, proper funding of education by the governments, democratisation of university administration and reversal of the increment in school fees in our universities,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, has advocated deregulation of the education sector, declaring that government alone can no longer finance education adequately in the country.

He stated this in Akure yesterday during a media briefing for the ninth convocation of the institution.

Ajibefun said the funding of the sector solely by government was not sustainable due to paucity of fund. The vice chancellor, who advocated inclusive funding for the university system, justified the recent increment in the tuition of the institution, declaring that the old fee was unrealistic.

He explained that it was long overdue and attributed the results achieved in the institution to the increment, which he said also impacted positively on the standard of teaching and learning.

“The newly elected national leadership of NAPS under my watch as the president of the entire polytechnic students sees it imperative to distance the well-meaning and intellectual polytechnic students from an integrity attacking reports flying in the media that the leadership of NAPS has rallied cum declared supports for governor Godwin Obaseki Of Edo State ahead of the 2020 Edo governorship election.

“The planned convention of our dear association scheduled for Edo State over the weekend commenced on disappointing note from the convention planning committee, chaired by Com Oluwole Jacob who carelessly dragged the hard-earned integrity of polytechnic students into dirty political atmosphere of Edo State, all because of monetary gains.

“The unsuspecting polytechnic students who had converged for convention in Edo State where dubiously lobbied into a rally tagged “SAVE EDUCATION RALLY” not knowing that the convention planning committee has already had unknown negotiations with the deputy governor of Edo State, Com Philip Shuabi, to turn the rally to an endorsement rally.

“The anti students’ act of the Convention planning committee got the teeming student Union president of polytechnics in the country to immediately pass a vote of no confidence on the Convention planning committee, thereby immediately appoint a Convention chairman that conducted the election,” he said.
