By Tunde Gbotemi Totally false! As at 8th October, 2020, evidence shows that Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former minister of finance, is yet to be declared director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). Recalled that VOICE AIR MEDIA reported that Okonjo-Iweala and Yoo Myung-hee, former South Korean minister of trade, are the two final candidates for the top position in WTO. The final shortlist for the office of the WTO DG was released by the trade body on Thursday. Whoever emerges between the duo will become the first female WTO DG since the organisation was set up 25 years ago. Following the announcement of Okonjo-Iweala as a final contestant for the role, information has been spreading on several platforms across social media that she has been declared winner. A check on social media saw Amanda Chisom posted her emergence on her Facebook handle and there is no truth in her claim! HER CLAIM: "*Breaking News:* Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been appointed as the first female leader of the WTO." VERIFICATION: TO Verify Amanda Chisom's claim, Paul Nwabuikwu, Okonjo-Iweala’s media adviser, said the ex-minister has not been declared winner. In the statement, Nwabuikwu said the race is ongoing, adding that a winner will be announced in two to three weeks. “The race for the WTO director-general is still very much on. Contrary to inaccurate information released online by an unidentified source, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has not yet been declared winner,” the statement reads. “As announced by WTO, the former managing director of the World Bank and South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee are the final two contestants left in the race. Now, The Facts! “The winner should be announced in two to three weeks. That remains the correct position. “Dr Okonjo-Iweala is appreciative and energised by the enthusiastic support of Nigerians. And she is urging all to keep praying until the final whistle.” Source, Details here...https://www.voiceairmedia.com/2020/10/fact-check-amanda-chisom-lied-okonjo.html

Unlike the joint force of the candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Osun state 2018 governorship election, Iyiola Omisore, members of the party and supporters who had teamed up with the All Progressives Congress (APC) in September, 2018 supplementary poll to help Gboyega Oyetola emerged as Osun state governor, VOICE AIR MEDIA has reliably gathered. The struggle for the seat of power in Ondo State, witnessed a new twist on Monday, as the candidate of the opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP), Mr. Peter Fasua stepped down from the race to support the Incumbent Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, saying that “ I share the same vision with Akeredolu”. While, The SDP member representing Idanre/Ifedore Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Adefisoye, also endorsed Akeredolu for reelection, saying “Mr. Governor has assured me that he would develop Idanre”. The development indicates that the SDP has partly supported the candidates of the two major political parties in the state and that the party no longer has a Candidate for the governorship election. The Osun SDP's decision was documented in a communique titled “SDP communique on Osun election from meetings held at Osogbo, Iwo, Ile-Ife, Ede and Ilesha on Monday, September 24.” The party, whose candidate returned third with 128,049 votes in the election on Saturday, said its decision was made after consultations with its leaderships and members in the 30 local government areas of Osun State. VOICE AIR MEDIA learnt that Adefisoye, popularly known as Small Alhaji, who addressed his supporters in Idanre on Monday, said “after consulting very widely with the leaders of SDP and other important leaders within and outside of Ondo State, especially the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, I have decided to support the APC. But I want to assure that this decision was primarily taken for the sake of continuous development in Idanre/Ifedore federal constituency. Ahead of the October 10, governorship election in Ondo state, the aspiration of the candidate of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), also the embattled Deputy Governor, Hon Agboola Ajayi, and that of his counterpart in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, have reportedly stirred up more division among PDP governors over whom to support. Investigation revealed that some of the governors were divided in their opinions during a conference telephone conversation with former President Olusegun Obasanjo following the outcome of the visit and closed door meeting of immediate past governor of Ondo state, Dr. Segun Mimiko and Obasanjo on Tuesday at Abeokuta. Upon invitation for discussion, the former Ondo State governor, Olusegun Mimiko had visited Obasanjo at his Hiltop Mansion at Abeokuta, where discussions were held on the possibility of having an alliance of the two opposition parties, the PDP and ZLP against the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) in Ondo State. It was gathered that Mimiko had justified and convinced Obasanjo beyond any considerable reason why the candidacy of Jegede, the candidate of the PDP cannot fly with the people of Ondo state. Mimiko was said to have pleaded with Obasanjo to advise the leadership of the PDP to talk to Jegede to step down for Ajayi for the two parties to work together ahead of next weekend governorship election in the state. A source at the meeting also quoted Mimiko to have told Obasanjo that, “Ajayi is a grassroots politician with executive and legislative experiences and he is more rooted in the politics of Ondo State than Jegede.” The source hinted that Mimiko further told Obasanjo that the candidature of Jegede runs against fairness and equity with the political tradition of the good people of Ondo State in power-sharing, he (Mimiko) said it was a regrettable action he took in 2016. Our investigation report revealed that the PDP governors who spoke with Obasanjo were said to have been divided in their views, with some of them sharing in the views and opinion of Dr. Mimko, some were said to be against it, while some others are indifferent in their reactions. Elections are the only instrument of Democratic and peaceful transfer of power with the consent and choice of the majority as Edo state governorship election set to hold tomorrow, Saturday, 19th September, 2020. Reporting from the street of Benin, Edo State capital, Mrs Precious a member of the All Progressive congress (APC), told reporter that she had always cherished the “leadership strength and capacity of (the incumbent governor) Godwin Obaseki,” and would have love to vote him if he had not dumped the APC. So Mr Obaseki’s decamping to the PDP was a factor in deciding who will earn her vote tomorrow, she said. Also, a loyalist of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who want his name anonymous, said Pastor Ize Iyamu was a strong grassroot member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who contested in the last gubernatorial election with the hope of coming back to give a good governance to the state but under the same umbrella party to cover the people of Edo state but reverse is the case today... So tomorrow will decide, he said. Though, there are 14 candidates for the election, but the quest for the chief security officer of the state has been rested on the shoulder of two strong personalities in the race, between the current Governor, Godwin Obaseki(PDP) and his opponent four years ago, Osagie Ize-Iyamu(APC). This newspapers reported how both men swapped political parties and are now respective flag-bearers of the parties they opposed in the last governorship election — Mr Obaseki now upholds the umbrella of the PDP while Mr Ize-Iyamu now swings the broom of the APC. A bus driver along ring road Benin in his word “We just want him (Governor Obaseki) to complete his eight years term. He is a nice man,” Master Osanrenren, said. However, a young lady in the Bus said she will vote Mr Ize-Iyamu because of the support of Adams Oshiomhole, the state’s two-term former governor and APC former chairman, whose unending battle with Mr Obaseki accumulated to his sack as the party head and the former decamping to the opposition. “He has done so much for Edo State,” Glory, a student of Auchi polytechnic Edo State, said. By One Class The Academic Staff of Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) have warned the federal government against reopening tertiary institutions. VOICE AIR MEDIA observed that the union has supported the position of its sister union, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), that there are no provisions to meet COVID-19 precautionary guidelines in universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. The president of ASUP, Anderson Ezeibe, revealed the position of the union to PREMIUM TIMES in an interview on Tuesday. According to Mr Ezeibe, the federal government’s plan on resumption is a threat to students and lecturers. “The truth of the matter is that we need not to be emotional about the resumption. Institutions were closed down for COVID-19 pandemic. The spread is well known and the closure of institutions was precautionary to mitigate it. The question now is what steps have the government taken in tertiary institutions between March and now,” he said. “If schools resume now then we don’t have any need to have shut in the first place. The agitation of students and parents are only emotional and the position of private institutions owners are mainly for personal gain.” Mr Ezeibe, however, said the polytechnic lecturers are not ready to expose themselves to risks. “The truth is polytechnics are not ready. There are lots of practical preparations to be done. Many institutions have up to 10,000 students. We are expecting that before resumption, there should be stakeholders forum where reality steps should be discussed. Before now, polytechnic lecturers and cleaners are outsourced for nearly 10 years. What it means is that institutions rely on contractors to clean. We don’t have good healthcare facilities and many more. “Are there isolation spaces in tertiary institutions. What about hostels capacities? How will all these be managed? The government simply wants to turn students and lecturers into Guinea pigs. Let there be stakeholders’ meetings for conclusion on resumption. This is the best solution,” he said. Recall ASUU president, Biodun Ogunyemi, had released a press statement that schools should only be opened when considered safe for students and lecturers.
