PoliticsRe: Was Murtala Mohammed a good man? by Hunter(op): 12:32pm On May 16, 2005
Thanks, I just picked him as he seemed to be one of the more influental in nigerian history (on the money, airport named after him etc)
TV/MoviesRe: Is Anyone Into Indian Movies? by Hunter(m): 8:55am On May 16, 2005

PhonesRe: NITEL Up For Sale Soon by Hunter(m): 12:59am On May 15, 2005
I think that this can only be a good thing as nitel atm is poorly run and offers unreliable services, with privatization a company cannot afford to have a company run like that, so they will need to improve it...
GamingRe: Your Top 10 Video Games by Hunter(m): 2:02pm On May 14, 2005

EntertainmentRe: Original CD/DVD Music and Movies in Nigeria by Hunter(m): 2:00pm On May 14, 2005
I didn't see anywhere to purchase them but as a rough idea how much they cost around the world usually about $30 AUD (N3000) for a new release.

Was Murtala Murhammad a good man?

Well this is something I'm not really familar with but I am wondering if Murtala Mohammed was actually a good and well respected person rather than just a military dictator.

It's very hard to find information on this so I thought here would be a good place to start.
ComputersRe: Laptop Troubleshooting by Hunter(m): 1:21pm On May 13, 2005
It's possible that all that was missing was the drivers and that prevented it running normally, once we get some more information we should be able to help you more.
PhonesRe: [please vote] Most Commonly Used Phones in Nigeria ... by Hunter(m): 1:18pm On May 13, 2005
I use my sony ericsson T610 when I come nigeria and I use my carriers global roaming smiley I chose it because it has alot of advanced features with good usability for a cheap price smiley
PoliticsRe: 1,000 Naira Note: Will there be inflation? by Hunter(m): 10:02am On May 12, 2005
it would be good if they got polymer notes (yay australian invention) because the current paper ones are quite disgusting sometimes.

As for inflation, I cannot see anyway that it won't avoided.
WebmastersRe: How To Get A .Com Website With Macromedia Flash by Hunter(m): 9:59am On May 12, 2005
Macromedia flash is quite difficult to work with so i suggest picking up a few books on it so you don't learn any bad habit's when you start.

.com's or what ever are usually fairly cheap so that shouldn't be a problem smiley (I think you should be able to get a nigerian address (.com.ng) for cheaper (Australia is one of the only countries were our country address's cost more)
PoliticsRe: Nigerian Police Installing Automated Fingerprinting Machines. Criminals Beware! by Hunter(m): 9:06am On May 10, 2005
Lie detector's aren't that advanced they measure the temperature in a bit of the body that heats up when someone is lie (nervous) and study other patterns (voice tone etc)

Unfortantly they're not reliable and tend to call someone a lier if there just nervous.
TV/MoviesRe: Nigeria has a Satellite in Orbit! (NigeriaSat-1) by Hunter(m): 9:01am On May 10, 2005
woah, that definaltly comes as a surprise good to see though, hopefully Nigeria can help other african nations gain scientific knoweledge as well.
PoliticsRe: Nigerian Police Installing Automated Fingerprinting Machines. Criminals Beware! by Hunter(m): 1:33pm On May 09, 2005
Manual technique's don't work too well in humid conditions though because the print would be damaged easily (also the population distribution of nigeria would make it again easily damaged (the sheer amount of people in places -- in perticular lagos))
PhonesRe: Smiley on cellphones. by Hunter(m): 1:31pm On May 09, 2005
Some phone's have a feature (mine does) that automatically convert's : ) to smiley or similar so have a poke around for it, I would be careful about inserting them though you might end up paying for a MMS for insterting a tiny little smiley sad
PoliticsRe: Nigerian Police Installing Automated Fingerprinting Machines. Criminals Beware! by Hunter(m): 8:14am On May 09, 2005
so um before this there was no system in place to actually check them? undecided
CareerRe: Profession: What Do You Do For a Living? by Hunter(op): 10:12am On May 06, 2005
but how do you get paid?
CareerProfession: What Do You Do For a Living? by Hunter(op): 8:39am On May 05, 2005
Just wondering what people do for a living?

Personally I am unemployed and a student full time (attending high-school - only a year and a half left yay) and on the side studying for a Cisco networking certificate smiley

dominobaby I just sent you an invite smiley
PhonesRe: Is 'Propre' a good name for a GSM network service? by Hunter(m): 8:35am On May 05, 2005
Personally i would choose soemthing easily marketable and recognizable perhaps something like Streamline communications would be hard to market compared to something like ZING!

Make it kinda mysterious and it will spread like wildfire, people will start talking about this mysterious new company cheesy
PhonesRe: How much to purchase a phone outright? ₦ by Hunter(op): 1:16pm On May 04, 2005
it's not the shipping that costs us the big bucks it's the fact they come from hong kong and we have to pay %33 import tax :/
Science/TechnologyRe: Free Invitations to GMail, Orkut and Yahoo 360 are available by Hunter(m): 1:11pm On May 04, 2005
Yep i can spare invites as well if needed smiley
CareerRe: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by Hunter(m): 12:21pm On May 02, 2005
From my understanding a poly would be a trade school (technical college) kinda arangement?

If all of your poly's would be converted into uni's you are going to have skill shortages as the practical sides that aren't addressed as well at uni's.
PhonesRe: How much to purchase a phone outright? ₦ by Hunter(op): 1:58am On May 01, 2005
so a little more expensive for the T610 and a little less for the 7260, though warranty could be an issue...
ComputersRe: To Create Broadband Internet Access by Hunter(m): 9:36am On Apr 30, 2005
Once you have broadband you cannot go back, I find dial-up unbearably slow now having used it from 1993->1999 (various speeds obviously) video streaming is not the only thing broadband is used for (infact it's not really used at all for that here) but mostly convenience. You find your self just going to "quickly" surf up the session times to movies, grab a mp3 etc.

Believe me once you get it you can't go back smiley

Also I think that if a carrier was going to start rolling out broadband via wireless (802.11) Voice over ip potentially has a massive market in nigeria. smiley

how high is the likely hood that it will show up?
WebmastersRe: I Need Free Website Hosting With Subdomain URL by Hunter(m): 4:42am On Apr 30, 2005
just one thing you need to be careful about though is browser compatability, testing is a must.
PhonesHow much to purchase a phone outright? ₦ by Hunter(op): 1:45am On Apr 30, 2005
Just wondering how much a mobile phone say costs in nigeria compared to here (just for reference say a phone with a colour screen and a basic camera (maybe a sony ericsson T610) and then say a Nokia 7260

The sony costs $200 (about N20000) here outright (so you can use prepaid) and the Nokia costs $500 (about N50000)

I ask because I'm wondering if it's cheaper to get my dad to pick up me a new phone in nigeria than buy it here (my phone has decided it needs to have a over bright section in the screen and I really can't be bothered getting it fixed)

for those unfamilar with the model number here is the phones (so you can see a picture and details)

(T610)

ComputersRe: To Create Broadband Internet Access by Hunter(m): 1:26am On Apr 30, 2005
To give you an idea of what's in place here, have a look at

http://www.agile.com.au/pdf/agile-network-map-mar05.pdf
(There a third party providor not out main one)

http://telstraglobal.com/flash_map/
(external links on our main tier 1 providor)

http://info.connect.com.au/docs/network/netmap.html
(another third party providor)

Telstra is our main providor however they don't reveal there complete network however it's not unreasonable to say get up to 1.2mb (yes megabytes) a second on the cable network (all for a tasty $60 Australian Dollars a month (about $50 american)) and ADSL at a somewhat slower speed (some providors are just rolling out services that will allow people to get speeds up to about 2.5mb a second (though finding a server on the internet that can upload that fast is problably harder))

But what I am trying to say is unless there is competition what's going to make them make it a cheap product, for instance If i was the only person in the world that sold hamburgers i could say charge $1000 a burger because there is no-one else that sells or makes them so there is no competition I have to beat by lowering my prices.

Also i have yet to find a NITEL website, does one exist?
ComputersRe: To Create Broadband Internet Access by Hunter(m): 3:43pm On Apr 29, 2005
The main problem is the lack of communication infrastructure in place, the real problem is that it has to go to the sattalite in the first place if you look at how high speed internet is offered in other countries you will see that satallite is very rarely used due to the latency it incours.

I don't know if nigeria peers into any communication links to Europe etc but the emerging wimax technology could be something to look into if high speed links are available.

Also if your interested I'll briefly explain how broadband in australia works, we have our local telephone exchanges (land line) which house a thing called a DSLAM which provides ADSL(broadband) to people within a certain range (about 7km max) from the local exchange it travels via fibre (very very very expensive to lay and purchase equipment) and then goes to a larger exchange and then finally ends up in the whole state exchange and then depending on where it needs to go it either goes locally out or via underwater cable to the US or Asia.
As you can see it's quite a complicated setup/practice so it's unsurprising that it isn't available in a few countries, but there is hope, Africa is close to europe so theoritically a high speed link could be installed to link the two without the use of a satallite (a nearly dead internet technology here)

Anyways I hope I kind of explained whats missing etc infrastructure wise etc and question just post away and I'll try to answer my best (I know a fair bit about networking concepts and the such)

Anyways Good Luck

ps. I'm off to bed now it's nearly 1am :S
