http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/04/24/close.call.ap/index.html WASHINGTON (AP) -- Human beings may have had a brush with extinction 70,000 years ago, an extensive genetic study suggests. The human population at that time was reduced to small isolated groups in Africa, apparently because of drought, according to an analysis released Thursday. The report notes that a separate study by researchers at Stanford University estimated that the number of early humans may have shrunk as low as 2,000 before numbers began to expand again in the early Stone Age. "This study illustrates the extraordinary power of genetics to reveal insights into some of the key events in our species' history," said Spencer Wells, National Geographic Society explorer in residence. "Tiny bands of early humans, forced apart by harsh environmental conditions, coming back from the brink to reunite and populate the world. Truly an epic drama, written in our DNA." Wells is director of the Genographic Project, launched in 2005 to study anthropology using genetics. The report was published in the American Journal of Human Genetics. Studies using mitochondrial DNA, which is passed down through mothers, have traced modern humans to a single "mitochondrial Eve," who lived in Africa about 200,000 years ago. The migrations of humans out of Africa to populate the rest of the world appear to have begun about 60,000 years ago, but little has been known about humans between Eve and that dispersal. The new study looks at the mitochondrial DNA of the Khoi and San people in South Africa, who appear to have diverged from other people between 90,000 and 150,000 years ago. The researchers led by Doron Behar of Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, Israel, and Saharon Rosset of IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York, and Tel Aviv University concluded that humans separated into small populations before the Stone Age, when they came back together and began to increase in numbers and spread to other areas. Eastern Africa experienced a series of severe droughts between 135,000 and 90,000 years ago, and researchers said this climatological shift may have contributed to the population changes, dividing into small, isolated groups that developed independently. Paleontologist Meave Leakey, a Genographic adviser, asked, "Who would have thought that as recently as 70,000 years ago, extremes of climate had reduced our population to such small numbers that we were on the very edge of extinction?" Today, more than 6.6 billion people inhabit the globe, according to the US. Census Bureau. The research was funded by the National Geographic Society, IBM, the Waitt Family Foundation, the Seaver Family Foundation, Family Tree DNA and Arizona Research Labs. http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/04/24/close.call.ap/index.html http://anthropology.net/2008/04/25/on-mtdna-diversity-within-africa-before-the-out-of-africa-migrations/?referer=sphere_related_content |
luvus:Evolution as a theory was not propounded until the 1800s. But the artifact of evolution have been around for billions of years. Why did satan have to wait billions of years before coming up with this "lie"? |
Answers to some of the Questions: 3) Which Book of the Old Testament contains the following words; "Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death." ? Exodus 21: 17. How many Christians know that there is such a barbaric injunction in their holy book? Why do they not observe this law? Jesus warns against the abandonment of the laws in Matthew 5. So why should this one not be observed? 4) Which OT character sacrifice his daughter to the Lord, after the Lord help him defeat his enemies? Jephthah, in Judges 11. I wonder what moral lesson can be drawn from this barbaric act! 5) When was the book of Daniel written? The book of Daniel presents itself as having being written in the 6th century BCE, during the reigns of the Babylonian rulers Nebuchadnezzar and Belshazzar and the Persians Cyrus and Darius. From that point in time it presents itself as predicting events in the ancient Near East during the 5th, 4th, 3rd and 2nd centuries BCE. But strangely, whenever Daniel talks about the 6th century it is vague and inaccurate and when it talks about the second century it is quite detailed and exact. This gives some idea as to the time of composition. With regard to the 6th century, the book of Daniel opens with; 1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it. 2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god. But in fact Jehoiakim reigned for eleven years: it was only in the first year of his son and successor Jehioachin that Nebuchadnezzar laid siege to Jerusalem, captured it, and "carried off the treasures of the House of the Lord" (2 Kings 28:8-13). The author of Daniel is quite weak on the facts about the 6th century BCE, and continues to be so in his account of the fall of Babylon to Persia in the year 539. He writes that "Belshazzar king of the Chaldaeans was slain, and Darius the Mede took the kingdom" (Daniel 5:30). But it was Cyrus the Persian who conquered Babylon (Ezra 1:1); there was never a king Darius the Mede. The author of Daniel confusedly imagines him in place of Darius the Persian, who succeeded Cyrus' son Cambyses in 521 BCE. The author of Daniel also confusedly imagines that Cyrus succeeded Darius (though in fact Darius succeeded Cyrus' son), and imagines that Balshazzar was the son of Nebuchadnezzar (5:11) though he was in fact the son of Nabonidus. Nabonidus, in turn, was not related to any of his predecessors, including Nebuchadnezzar; so the author of Daniel was ignorant even of the lineage of the ruler, Belshazzar, in whose court Daniel was said to be "chief of the Magicians" (5:11). Thus it ought not surprise the attentive reader of the book of Daniel that modern critical scholars of the bible are unanimous in their conviction that Daniel "actually comes from the 2nd century BCE", and that its pretence of coming from the 6th century BCE is literary fiction intended to impress its readers with the supposed accuracy of its foreknowledge of the next several hundred years. (Source: Who wrote the Gospels, Randel Helms) 6) What combination of animals were taken into the ark? How long was the flood event? What type of bird was sent out by Noah? Two of a Kind: Genesis 7: 7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood. Genesis 7: 8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth, Genesis 7: 9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah. Genesis 7: 15 And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the breath of life. Seven of a Kind: Genesis 7: 2 Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female. Genesis 7: 3 Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth. The Forth Days Flood Account Genesis 7: 4 For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth. Genesis 7: 12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights. Genesis 7: 17 And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth. Genesis 8: 6 And it came to pass at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made: The One Hundred and Fifty Days Flood Account Genesis 7: 24 And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days. Genesis 8: 3 And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated. Genesis 8: 4 And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat. Genesis 8: 5 And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month: in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, were the tops of the mountains seen. What kind of bird (raven or dove) was sent out? Genesis 8: 7 And he sent forth a raven, which went forth to and fro, until the waters were dried up from off the earth. Genesis 8: 8 Also he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the ground; Genesis 8: 9 But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth: then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto him into the ark. Genesis 8: 10 And he stayed yet other seven days; and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark; Genesis 8: 11 And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth. Genesis 8: 12 And he stayed yet other seven days; and sent forth the dove; which returned not again unto him any more. 7) Which of these dates is likely to be the date of Jesus' birth; before 4BCE or after 6CE? Matthew claims Jesus was born in the reign of Herod the Great, who died in 4 BCE. Luke claims Jesus was born during the census conducted by Quirinus the governor of Syria. But Quirinius was not governor until 6 CE, a 10 year gap. So when was jesus born? 8-) Who were the administrative rulers of Syria in the 1st century CE? The Romans 9-) How did Judas Iscariot died? He either hung himself as in one account of stabbed himself and burst open his guts, as in another account. 10-) When was Jesus crucified? On the day of passover or the day before passover? One bible account says the day of passover, while another says the day of passover. 11-) Are rulers of countries ordained by God? Romans 13 says the rulers of countries are ordained by God. So God has got to be held responsible for rulers like Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Sadam etc. |
Another example of suffering imposed by the adhoc clerical authorities to deprive people of the joys of marriage and parenthood. Celibacy in the Catholic church is a recent depraved imposition. All or most of the earliest church fathers and Popes where married and had countless illegitimate children. You only have to study the historyof the Papacy to see the deprave nature of the Catholic authorities in the Midddle to Dark Ages. Check out the book by the Catholic Priest, Peter De Rosa, "Vicars of Christ"; http://www.amazon.com/Vicars-Christ-Peter-Rosa/dp/184223000X/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1208979219&sr=8-2 |
olabowale:How does any of the above non-sense show that the origin of mankind is Africa. All you just said was quote recent past events or old untestable (or unproveable) history and mythology. The oldest of the old event in the bible/k-ran is no more than 10000 years old. |
olabowale:Fortunately, this is something science can comment on. Science provide unimpeachable evidence that the origin of mankind is Africa, NOT the Arabian desert as the moronic desert dogmas suggest. Can you provide a single shred of evidence that suggest that your dogmas are right? |
Paul explicitly said women should be silent in churches, unless you want to re-inrterpret Paul. |
Would be nice to know which set of 10 Commandments you guys are fighting over? Exodus 20 or Exodus 34? |
~Lady~:You are right, I missed it. It would be nice if the pledge of marriage were changed to: , for better or worse till death or SIN do us part. ![]() |
~Lady~:Would you stay in a marriage if your partner was physically abusive to you? That is not adultery. But you have to stay for "better or worse" in the Christian notion of marriage, haven't you? |
olabowale:Is there anything in the least bit comprehensible in the above? What a waste of gray cell, damage by religious dogmatism! |
~Lady~:I agree with the general sentiment, but just want to pick up on the "for better or for worse" comment. While I know that this is another subject, what if one partner was physically, mentally abusive and untrustworthy? Should they carry on in the relationship, no matter what "for better or for worse"? |
This is a very naive question, but I think I get the gist. Allow me to re-phrase like this and see which side you fall one: Should one break a relationship ( with spouse, friends, neighbours, colleagues etc) on grounds of illness? Answering this question should throw more light on your specific question. Never mind the fact that one is (or not) a Christian. How's that? |
Pastor AIO:Glad to learn you are reading and enjoying the site. BTW what is a Dualist? |
Pastor AIO:What is the criteria for disregarding one rather than the other? Are you saying that those people who god killed for touching the Ark of the Covenant would have lost their lives over something that would later be disregarded by subsequent generations? What a waste? JeSoul:I am NOT pretending, far from it. You know my other pseudonyms(therationa, tpaine). What we now generally accept as the 10C have essentially been established by tradition rather than analysis. So it is no surprise the Ex20 is given preference over Ex34. The question I am asking is why this is so, when clearly Ex34 are a replacement of Ex20. Did the people who lost their lives over the Ark do so in vain. What was the purpose of securing the Ex34 10C in the Ark and in the Holy of Holies, if it would only be ignored by modern day believers? |
JeSoul:What should we do with those commandments in Exodus 34 then? Disregard them? Mind you, these were the commandments in the Holy of Holies. |
This is a valid philosophical argument. Scientifically, it is even more crucial that there exist sufficient genetic variation in a breeding population otherwise the population would suffer tremendous genetic diseases and abnormalities. This has been very well studied in the Jewish and Indian communities where the prevalence of some genetic diseases have been ascribed to the marrying of very close relatives. In the animal kingdom, this problem also is well reported. The leopard population has very low levels of genetic variation, resulting the very high mortality of leopard cubs. In fact, it has been estimated that leopard are very close to the brink of extinction, not for their low numeric population but for their low genetic variation. If the human race had originated only from two identical individuals (noting that Eve was produced from the same genetical material as Adam), there would have been little or no variation. Resulting in very high mortality in their offsprings. There chances of surviving thousands of years would have been almost zero. |
Which commandments should we be debating about; those in Exodus 20 or those in Exodus 34? I think it is most important to establish this first before we can move the debate forward. |
To save you guys some time, I have taken the liberty to list them here: The REAL Ten Commandments (Exodus 34) are , 1. "For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:" (Exodus 34:14) 2. "Thou shalt make thee no molten gods." (Exodus 34:17) 3. "The feast of unleavened bread shalt thou keep. Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, as I commanded thee, in the time of the month Abib: for in the month Abib thou camest out from Egypt." (Exodus 34:18) 4a. "All that openeth the matrix is mine; and every firstling among thy cattle, whether ox or sheep, that is male." (Exodus 34:19) 4b. "But the firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb: and if thou redeem him not, then shalt thou break his neck. All the firstborn of thy sons thou shalt redeem. And none shall appear before me empty." (Exodus 34:20) 5. "Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest: in earing time and in harvest thou shalt rest." (Exodus 34:21) 6. "And thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the year's end." (Exodus 34:22) 7. "Thrice in the year shall all your menchildren appear before the LORD God, the God of Israel." (Exodus 34:23) 8. "Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven; neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the passover be left unto the morning." (Exodus 34:25) 9. "The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring unto the house of the LORD thy God." (Exodus 34:26) 10. "Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk." (Exodus 34:26) |
Some more important commandments from Exodus 34; 24 I will drive out nations before you and enlarge your territory, and no one will covet your land when you go up three times each year to appear before the LORD your God. 25 "Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast, and do not let any of the sacrifice from the Passover Feast remain until morning. 26 "Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the LORD your God. "Do not cook a young goat in its mother's milk." 27 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel." |
Never mind about the Catholic commandments. Which version of the 10 commandments should one observe: those given in Exodus 20, or those given in Exodus 34? I would argue that those given in Exodus 34 should take precedence over the Exodus 20 commandments. Ex34 were the replacements of the Ex20 commandments, after Moses had smashed the Ex20 set. God ordered Moses to build the Ark of the Covenant and place the Ex34 commandments therein. So these were the commandments that were observed and revered by the Jews. In fact, Ex34 commandments in the Ark were so "important" that God would strike people dead who so much as touch the Ark. Now, why are there discrepancies between the Ex20 and Ex34 commandment? Did god forgot what he had given Moses in the first set of commandments? Had he lost his mind? Remember, never try to cook a baby goat in its mothers milk, or you would be violating one of god's commandments. |

Let us assume that there are five houses of different colors next to each other on the same road. In each house lives a man of a different nationality. Every man has his favorite drink, his favorite brand of cigarettes, and keeps pets of a particular kind. 1. The Englishman lives in the red house. 2. The Swede keeps dogs. 3. The Dane drinks tea. 4. The green house is just to the left of the white one. 5. The owner of the green house drinks coffee. 6. The Pall Mall smoker keeps birds. 7. The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhills. 8. The man in the center house drinks milk. 9. The Norwegian lives in the first house. 10. The Blend smoker has a neighbor who keeps cats. 11. The man who smokes Blue Masters drinks bier. 12. The man who keeps horses lives next to the Dunhill smoker. 13. The German smokes Prince. 14. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house. 15. The Blend smoker has a neighbor who drinks water. The question to be answered is: Who keeps fish? |

The Pope Dies and Goes to Heaven The Pope dies and, naturally, goes to heaven. He's met by the reception committee and, after a whirlwind tour is told that he can enjoy any of the myriad recreations available. He decides that he wants to read all of the ancient original text of the Holy Scriptures, and spends the next eon or so learning the languages. After becoming a linguistics master, he sits down in the library and begins to pore over every version of the Bible, working back from the most recent "Easy Reading" to the original script. All of a sudden there is a scream in the library. The angels come running to him, only to find the Pope huddled in a chair, crying to himself, and muttering, "An 'R'! They left out the 'R'”. God takes him aside, offering comfort and asks him what the problem is. After collecting his wits, the Pope sobs again, "It's the letter 'R', the word was supposed to be CELEBRATE." |

In the morning, as the keeper comes to set the animals free, he notices that the same chimpanzee is still studiously reading both books. As he walks past the chimpanzee's enclosure, the chimpanzee takes a look at him and says "Am I my keeper's brother?" |
