Car TalkRe: Car Producing Black Smoke by Ikenna351(m): 8:17pm On Nov 05, 2013
joebeckz: Dear nairalanders, i drive a toyota carina e, the rate at which it consumes fuel baffles me, i cant use a thousand naira fuel for a 30kilometer drive without receiving d red fuel indicator light. I fired the car and checked d silencer only to see black smoke, took it to an injector specialist, he changed one thing he called smokin sensor under d car close to d silencer,it is a plug with a round head. It reduced but started again. All this started when i was managing fuel n drivin d car on red for long or even til d car goes off. Cud my injector b bad entirely or is there any remedy. Please i need response cos am jus a corper managin my alawee here in abuja n dis ca saves ma a*s cos my office is situated where taxis cant go in so i need dat car. Waiting for ur response please.
Lol @ smoking sensor.

Before we start, what model year is your Carina E? Or would i say, your car production year?

Before i forget, please, you must not drive car everyday. So, a day you can't afford to fuel your car beyond reserve tank, leave the car. The more you drive the car on reserve tank or drive till the fuel finishes and the car stalls/goes off because of inadequate fuel in the tank, you are creating more problems for yourself.

By the way, it's oxygen sensor. Don't mind your so called "Injector specialist". Smoking sensor indeed!

Car TalkRe: When To Change Your Car Engine Oil: The Mileage Way! by Ikenna351(m):
oyinbogirl: I do my oil every 10, 000 kms, as per logbook guidelines. But my pistons are now worn, and the engine burns a lil oil now, I always find im topping up btween services. Here are some Varying factors for doing it every 5000 kms :

: type of driving you do (city or long distance) short drives, in traffic, stopping & starting can shorten oil life span

: If your engine is worn at all or has over 300 000 kms

: dirt roads rather than bitumen or sealed

: generally speaking older cars will need more frequent oil changes unless the driving conditions you currently are in are extreme eg high temperatures (cuts down oil life)

But if none of these apply to you, go with the manufacturers reccomendation.

Oh, and lastly before I forget, Check the appearance of the oil, you should check it each week (as well as the coolant) make sure it is'nt black & sludgy, and when you touch the oil between your fingers it should have some viscosity (should cling & make a kind of 'string' between your fingertips) if it has no viscosity - the oil is finished & needs changing, cos it wont be clinging to your pistons and moving parts. Hope I was of some help to you. cheers
There is nothing wrong in one being confused once in a while, you know. But when one tries to rationalize why being in a state of confusion is good, is where it gets funny.

I wouldn't say you were completely wrong (at least, you weren't completely confused), but that your engine started to burn oil simply because of long duration of oil change, is where you really sounded confused. What do you think would happen if your engine run without oil or ran out of oil? You think the combustion chambers are where the severe damage would take place? If your engine oil turns to water, what do you think would happen to that engine? Where would a severe fiction take place in an engine when there is no oil or loss of lubricating fluid? What do you think that would happen if fuel goes into the oil pan and dilutes engine oil? You could be right that bad oil would cause oil burn, but ..........

Even if you change your engine oil every week with the best fully synthetic oil in the market, but run your engine without thermostat, your engine will start burning oil, even before you finish paying for the car, if it was bought with loan. Even if you replace your engine oil every month but rev or race your engine hard at cold start or first start every morning, your engine will start burning oil, before you could brag "how durable my car is" to friends who drive other brands and knew when you bought her. Your car engine will burn oil mercilessly if you ignore to break-in the engine when new, whether out of ignorance or Nigerian thing (na tear rubber). My point? A lot would make an engine burn oil, even if you change your engine oil every month.

About your theory that every car that has done 300, 000 km or older cars should change their oil frequently. I mean, seriously ?

Car TalkRe: Does Putting On Car Air Condition Affect Its Fuel Consumption! by Ikenna351(m): 8:26pm On Nov 04, 2013

As good as it were, how realistically safe, secure and healthy it is to wind down car windows in our environment during traffic gridlock with beggars, touts, and opportunistic security and traffic agents milling around.
Fuel must be a trade off in such circumstances in naija.
[b][/b
Op asked a question and he answered his question.

Yes, running AC in the city will consume more fuel, unlike the highway. Whether reducing fuel consumption by lowering windows in traffic is worth it or not, it's a different matter all together. After all, I don't lower my windows, whether in traffic, city, highway, hot or cold weather. It's a personal choice.

Car TalkRe: Does Putting On Car Air Condition Affect Its Fuel Consumption! by Ikenna351(m): 5:37pm On Nov 04, 2013
lomomike: When you are at a stop, idling, gridlock, slow speed traffic or normal city driving, it is advisable you turn off your Air conditioning system in your car and wind your windows down to cut down on fuel consumption.

However, when on high speed or travelling on a highway, it is advisable you wind up all windows, and turn on your car Air conditioning system to reduce drag, air turbulence, and dangerous crosswinds effects and also reduce the rate fuel your car consume.
Agreed.

505 V6 Specifications with Pictures

Though, I stopped discussing 505 here long time ago, because I realised that bringing up talk on old cars with Nigerians is such a right discussion in a wrong arena. So I only do that now with non Nigerians, off this forum, with those that values and appreciate good things, irrespective of how old and new they are. I have made a lot of good friends in USA, Canada, Australia and Europe, simply for owing that car; friends who still drive the car (505/V6) and wouldn't let go, irrespective that they have other newer cars. We talk more off forums via mails & phone calls, both car related and personal matters. I know how many of them I have helped to source for 505 parts and shipped to them, since some of those parts are no longer available in their various countries, but still available here.

Anyway, recently, about 4 Nigerians have contacted me, indicating interest in owing 505 V6, hence, reason for this post. I also observed that some of us really don't know the 505 V6 specifications. A lot of us judge all 505 with the 505 PAN production. Unfortunately, that is very wrong. They are not the same in all ramifications. The superiority is overwhelming. The 505 V6 comes with most the gadgets you will find in modern cars. Find them below:

Good luck for those hunting for 505 V6. If I could get one, you can.

Car TalkRe: Check Engine Light Problem On My Camry 2.2L Manual by Ikenna351(m):
Your car will likely not be OBD-II compliant, considering the model year. But will have OBD port. But you can check to be sure. I think OBD-II scan port has 16 pins, while OBD has less. Count yours.

If the car happens to be non-OBD II, then manual troubleshooting is the available option, unless you have the adopter for scanning OBD system with OBD-II scan tool.

Manual troubleshooting doesn't mean throwing parts at the car until the problem stops. It means testing sensors/components with Digital MultiMeter to find out one that has fallen short of factory values, among other methods and manual troubleshooting tools, like the Fuel pressure gauge to know how good a fuel pump is, etc.

Your car symptom sounds more like an injection issue, not ignition. So replacing spark plugs was a waste of money. The spark plugs shouldn't be on the list of components to test, considering the symptom.

I believe your injection system uses AFM, not MAF. You can start from there. But you need to know the factory values required of your AFM to signal to the ECU and the AFM wires to test (ECU signal wires). Since the fault is intermittent, swapping in another AFM may not give you instant result, unless the seller would allow you to drive out and test before you pay. It wouldn't hurt to clean the AFM in the car first, it could solve your problem.

I doubt if it's your distributor (if thats what your ignition system has), since a failing distributor, distributor cap or spark plug leads would give constant rough idling and misfiring sometimes. Hence, i wouldn't bother with ignition system, for now. But then, i don't really know how Toyota ignition system works. So, it could still be your ignition after all.

When the CEL comes on and the power drops, does it emit a particular colour of smoke from the exhaust? If you don't know, next time it happens, stop and observe it. If possible, have someone depress the accelertor hard, while you watch the exhaust at the car rear.

There are other injection components that give such symptom, but will stop here for now, until you give us more details.

But if you can find an OBD scanner, then you wont need all I explained above. Good luck !

Car TalkRe: When And Engine Oil Is Overguaged In Your Car. by Ikenna351(m): 9:34pm On Nov 01, 2013
Plenty.

It will kill the main bearing oil seal, among other things.

Simply, unplug the oil drain plug and drain out some quantity and re-tight the plug. Yes, its likely to go below normal gauge when you do that. But thats the price you have to pay. You can always buy new can of oil of the same oil grade in the engine, and gradually refill to normal level on the dipstick.

On another note.

Last week Thursday, i drove to Garki II, in my SV D9, to inspect a tokunbo 406 V6 someone was interested to buy. I parked the car in the Automated Car Wash compound, which it shares with Garki Super Market. I left to inspect the car and came back two hours later, jumped in, started the car and drove out. I didn't drive the car the next day. The 2nd day, Saturday, i decided to wash the car. I always start the washing from the windscreen. As i pulled the wiper blade, i was shocked at what i saw. " No, this can't be it", i muttered. I stepped back, looked well at the car, to be sure it was my SV D9. Of course, it was. I looked back at the wiper blade and couldn't believe it. The wiper blade on that screen wasn't mine!

When I got the car, the wiper blade was no longer doing a good job. So decided to change it. I tried those plastic wiper blades people carry about everywhere. The noise from it was terrible. I couldn't bear it. So i looked for proper 406 wiper blade and bought one, Valeo. I bought the set 1k. The noise was no more and the cleaning job was good.

So how come what i had on my windscreen that morning was now that nonsense plastic wiper blades i rejected long ago? It became clear to me that i was robbed, at that moment. The only place i could think of was that place i parked the car that Thursday evening at Garki II. But then, who could remove a genuine wiper blades from someone's car and replaced them with fake ones? So if caught and beaten to death by people, what would he tell his maker? That he was killed because he stole wiper blade that doesn't cost more than 1k? Common wiper blade kwa!

I tried to use the fake one the anumpama put on my windscreen, but the noise was unbearable and it was wiping off water well. Worst case, it was scratching the screen. I immediately went and bought another genuine Peugeot 406 wiper blades two days ago. This time, i bought Cogefa brand (with deflector), unlike the Valeo that didn't have deflector. I bought them 2k. I got home, remove the fake ones, put the cogefa ones ad tested the wiping. Wow! The noise was gone. The wiping is smoothless and soundless now.

My point is, becareful where you park your car. You may come back and not meet you car or meet it vandalised.

Car TalkYour Car, How Secured It Is? How Safe Where You Park Is? by Ikenna351(op):
This morning, 01/11/2013, I went to Old Federal Secretariat at Area 1, Garki, here in Abuja, for an official assignment. Few minutes later on arrival, people started shouting, gathering at the Secretariat Car Park, opposite Federal Ministry of Interior Blocks. What was the noise all about? Someone's car has just been stolen! Whose car? A name was mentioned. What! Someone I know. Not just someone I know I know, but we served together (NYSC) in the same department, the same year, the same Batch. A very quiet one. I couldn't believe he was the victim. I knew how he suffered after NYSC, got a job and eventually bought a Honda Accord (model withheld). And now the car has been stolen. What a sad day!

I left an hour later. This same evening, I met someone who was there at the Ministry when the sad thing happened. He told me that few hours after I left, a woman came to that same car park and started shouting, crying, that her Honda Accord (model withheld) has been stolen where she parked the car, in the same car park, after the first incident. It was unbelievable! Two Car robbery, the same brand, the same car park, the same day.

The guy went on, telling me that I am a lucky guy for driving Peugeot. That it was there that he learnt from people discussing, that Peugeot cars cannot be started without their original keys, no matter how good or techy the thief is. All I could do was smile, but remained silent. It wasn't a moment to gloat or "I told you so". That's something other brands cant take away from Peugeot: Always coming back to meet your Lion wherever you park it, as long as its BSI controlled. Topic for another day.

Anyway, I started this thread to remind or inform us of what it takes to own certain brand of cars. Please, if you have a Toyota, Honda or any Car brand that attracts car thieves, try and get a comprehensive insurance, if you can afford it. Also, get a tracking device installed in your car. And finally, get a good car security installed in your car. Don't rely on all these pedal/steering lock, those thieves have master keys that unlock them. Also, no matter how modern your Japs are, those thieves find it very easy bypass those electronic securities in them and carryout their act.

Then Peugeot owners with BSI system, you do not need to install aftermarket security system. Your BSI unit may see it as an unwanted program and send alert signal to your engine ECU and the engine ECU will lock itself up. And trust me, heaven and Earth will come down before that ECU will unlock. The key, BSI unit & ECU are coded together. Once the BSI receives a wrong or unknown code from any device other than the key , it will lock the engine ECU, such that no matter how you crank the engine, it will never start, even when you have reverted the system to factory. The same thing is applicable when you try to start a BSI Peugeot with wrong key, the BSI will sense a wrong code, signal alert code to engine Ecu, which will lock itself up. Then the BSI will immediately immobilize the car, such that both the BSI and ECu will be locked and wont communicate with each other. Even when you insert the right key, the car remain immobilized and ecu remain locked, until heaven comes down, before the 3 components will start seeing each other again. So don't play with your BSI. Am not sure suggesting one shouldn't install tracking device Is there to secure your car. Am not saying Peugeot owners with BSI systems should not install tracking system, but be careful. You may have to take it to Peugeot dealership to do that. Anyway, house members in peugeot thread already know this. I just wanted to enlighten peugeot owners who don't visit the house.

Hmm! More issues. Find the link below:

http://m.carcomplaints.com/Toyota/Camry/2012/engine/vehicle_speed_control.shtml

I will be careful henceforth if any new Toyota Camry or any new Toyota product is following behind. After reading the complaints in the above link, i couldn't believe that Toyota has not has fixed that self-accelerating issue they had with the Prius in 2004 or so.

If you don't want your car to be rear-ended, don't allow any 2012 or new Camry to stay behind your car at traffic light. Because the car could accelerate itself and finish off your car rear.

http://m.carcomplaints.com/Toyota/Camry/

It's so obvious that they still have more recalls to do or more repairs to do on the recalled ones, if they are interested.

Or probably butchered out.

I have scanned a lot of that Accord model. The port is not hidden. So if you can't find it, then wahala dey. grin

By the way, is it American spec or Euro spec? If its Euro spec, is it Factory LHD or RHD convert? If its RHD convert, check under the glove box on the passenger's side. It should be there. But if its American spec, then it should be under the steering wheel ( not sure of Factory LHD Euro spec). If its not there, then you will have to pull out that plastic covering that steering column and look for it. Probably, it was removed from the original position and hanged somewhere there. Otherwise, ..... you know the rest.

My preference will easily be the Corolla as I don't see myself riding a 3 cylinder car with manual window controls in this age! Please don't crucify me its my choice anyway, others may like it. Besides, the Corolla has gained some reputation of reliability at this side of the world.
What part of "Green car" written all over the Peugeot 301 Access with 3-cylinder engine 5-speed manual, do you not understand ? Is that the only 301 version i attached the pics? Did I say all 301 displayed had 3-cylinder engine? You claimed you were there too, how come you didn't see 301 Active and Allure with 4-cylinder engines and with all the electrically controlled gadgets in them?

It's very amusing how some are comparing Peugeot 301 with Toyota Corolla. One even compared a 2010 production Peugeot 508 with the so called "2014 Toyota Camry". Sometimes, I wonder. Of course, no one has talked about 508 RXH and 508 GT. The other day, smartchoice started a thread on a massive recall on a brand we make so much noise about, but everyone kept quiet, pretended as if they didn't see the thread. https://www.nairaland.com/1484252/toyota-recalls-six-million-vehicles So much for reliability !

If you in interested in comparing, this is how it should be:

Peugeot 301 vs Toyota Yaris.
Peugeot 408 vs Toyota Corolla.

"Farher, forgive them, for they do not know what they are saying," is all I could think of.

Op did not sound like a novice to me not to know what misfiring and rough idling means for not to have mentioned it in the beginning.

Misled who? Can you tell you that I all I have suggested so far has nothing to do with fuel finding itself in the oil pan?

Guess work? Who is doing the guess work here? Myself? I can see that you don't know me that much or you are beginning to do. Sorry, we are different. I do elimination method/ manual troubleshooting and am good at it. I list out possible components/sensors which if failed would give a particular symptom and gradually start eliminating each one after the other until I get to the culprit. In the process, I would discover better method of troubleshooting, components about to fail that have not started giving warning and understand the car better. I do not see anything wrong in teaching someone how to fix an issue with his vehicle which he asked for.

Ikenna
Car TalkRe: When Engine Oil Dip Stick Smells Of Petrol. by Ikenna351(m):
Haba. Too many suggestions on this matter that one can get so confused on what to really do.

Fuel in your engine oil could be caused by a number of reasons but the most basic and obvious cause is usually the spark plugs not firing in the cylinders. This causes uncombusted petrol to remain in the cylinders. This fuel gradually finds its way through the piston rings and drip into the oil sump mixing with the engine oil.

Imagine the RPM of an engine having raw fuel dumped in a cylinder without spark in each firing cycle. That a lot of fuel.

You complained about the loss of power. That could be attributed to your plugs not firing well.

Check your spark plugs and be sure that they are firing ok. If not, change them and check the result. The code you pulled from the scan does not necessarily reflect to the issue at hand so ignore it for now.

Car-Doctor.
No matter how good spark plugs are and how properly gapped they might be, they cant burn all fuel when there is excessive fuelling. They have limited amount of fuel the spark can handle during the explosion. Otherwise, you are saying all black smoke symptom means faulty spark plugs?

When fuel spray into the intake manifold by the injectors is more than required amount of air, do you expect the combustion stroke to be properly done in those chambers?

Op said he changed his spark plugs recently with OEM. At least, copper plugs should last 20,000 km, not to think of if they are platinum or Iridium. I would lay more emphasis, especially on the injection, rather than ignition, in finding the culprit, in his case, without ruling out the ignition components though.

By the way, excessive fuelling would cause hesitation, poor acceleration or drop in power as well, until the rpm hits 4-5k rpm.
Thanks guys, the response is overwhelming. I cleared the code (p1349) and it reappeared after about an hour of driving. That's the only code I got.
You said you found the airfilter and MAF very dusty. What have you done about those two?

As simple as airfilter is, yes, it can cause such problem. Imagine when you close your nostrils and mouth, can you be able to breath or talk properly ? Thats what happens when the airfilter becomes too clogged to make it difficult for required amount of air, needed for the air-fuel mixture to take place in the intake manifold. Besides, it will affect other injection components like IAT.

As for the MAF, it's a different ball game. Sometimes, a failing MAF may not give any code. MAFs can be very difficult to diagnose, most times, better manually tested. I would clean off the dust with mild solvent and see what happens.
