The Travails of Chukwuemeka(3)

Emeka’s journey to lagos was a hard and tedious one. This was the first time he would leave the Biafran heartland and he was both anxious and scared at the same time.

He could not sleep a wink for the entire duration of the 12 hour trip,he wondered aloud to himself. . .”I hope those ngati Yoruba will not attack me on the streets”, he equally wondered the kind of reception he would receive from ‘Uncle Majestic’ once he arrived Lagos.

They finally arrived Orile park in Lagos close to 12 midnight ! “This is Lagos “ he wondered aloud again.

“I will conquer you by the great power of Amadiaoha”, ”I will complete what my lord and master Ojukwu could not accomplish in the late 60s”.

As he alighted, he was confident everyone would know his great Uncle and probably take him to majestic’s house once they realized he was a relative.
He spoke little English & could barely communicate with the Hausa suya man & Yoruba conductors at the park,he searched for someone who could at least understand his thick Igbo .

Finally he was able to sight an Igbo man ,whom he identified by the loud Mbaise music blaring from his shop.
“Nna Kedu” Emeka greeted, “Kedu” came the reply ,the shopkeeper looked like he was in his early thirties and assessed Mekus suspiciously. “E be kini je “ “where are you going” asked Mr shopkeeper.

“I’m a relative of uncle majestic and I want you to take me to his house” mekus confidently replied in his rather deep Uli dialect.
“Uncle who” said the shopkeeper. “Uncle Majestic” replied mekus,” He’s also known as Uchendu the spare parts dealer”.

The shopkeeper held back himself from bursting out in laughter. “You are looking for Uche the spare parts dealer, in orile or in Lagos?” he said.
“He’s in Lagos, I’m sure you must know him” replied Mekus,he was tired and was not ready for any games,he made a mental note to report this guy to his Uncle for wasting his time.

Now the shopkeeper could not hold back himself, he called out to his friends who were trying to sleep at the back of the shop.
“Please see me see wahala o “ he said “ This bush baby has just come from Ihiala and is looking for Uche in Lagos” he shouted.

The entire carpark was thrown into a serious fit of laughter .
“Uche in Lagos?!” Onlookers gathered around Mekus, who wondered what all the fuss was about.
Afterall his uncle was known all over Uli, what was the joke ?

Finally one of the Igbo boys came to him , noticing he was genuinely confused,
“Nne, we have thousands of Uches selling spare parts in Lagos, as a matter of fact in Orile alone we have almost 40”

Mekus realised he was in deep trouble, he suddenly longed for his bed made of palm fronds in his mud hut close to the fermenting area of his hamlet in quiet Uli.

The Travails of Chukwuemeka(2)

Moving to Lagos was not going to be easy for Emeka,as his mother would have none of it. The palmwine business was booming at the time and there were younger ones to cater for. However Mekus (as he was known to is village mates) was adamant. He insisted he had to explore new grounds and not grow up a professional palmwine tapper/farmer.

"Nwanu, who do you know in this Lagos sef. . " his mother asked

"Nana,it doesn't matter,I know i can make it there" he said

"Hmmmmm" sighed his mother

"Afterall Nna Majestic made his millions in Lagos after the war,even Oliver De Coque sang his praise in his last album" Emeka continued;

he was referring to his relative 'Uncle Majestic' whose real name was actually Uchendu ,he got his nickname from a spelling competition organised by the catholic priest in the 50s.

'Uncle Majestic' was a successful spare parts dealer in Lagos and was well known and respected in Uli.

So despite his mother's resistance,Emeka packed a few belongings and set out to the motor park one early morning in May 1994,at the age of 14,praying that Chineke would guide his part and give him the strength to show those Yoruba infidels that Biafra would be great again.

He had over time come to lose interest in the Hausa-Fulani,as he believed they were irrelevant to the scheme of things. . . it was the 'ngati Yoruba' he would seek to dominate and disgrace as they had played a 'traitor' role with their leader Awolowo during the fall of Biafra.

As he got into the bus that would take him from the village to the central Lagos park in ihiala, all he could think of was making his first million naira and showing those Yorubas who was the best.

illusion2:
The Travails of Chukwuemeka

Chukwuemeka Biafra (aka mekusxxx) was born into a humble home in Uli suburb of Ihiala town in the southeastern part of Nigeria.

Born into relative poverty,he resolved to be the very best he could ever be. Having lost many relatives to the civil war which ended 10 years earlier,he had the inane determination of getting back at the Nigeria 'establishment'-especially the Yoruba,Hausa-Fulanis,who held responsible for the humiliation his ethnic group suffered between 1967-1970.

His family were predominantly farmers/palmwine tappers, and he had cousins who had worked at the moribund Biafra International Airport,Uli.

Deprived of quality nursery/primary education,he learnt to write his name at the age of 9 and dropped out of formal education altogether at age 12. Thereafter,Emeka made up his mind to leave the family profession ,to pursue a career in trading. . . .and this is what led him to the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria (Lagos)

He was likely doing a 2 year research masters program. Schools in the UK offer 2 year research programs- when I am bored I could easily find the schools which offer 2 years research degrees in Molecular biology.
Why are you explaining his degree for him na ,if indeed he has 2 masters & a PhD he should be able to explain himself. ?  undecided
I personally suspect its his Master(- the man that brought him to Alaba from the village )'s son that has all these degrees and he's promoting the guy's identity as his own.

SEFAGO:
i was talking of in science (of course remove oxford which is losing its grounds in science). Moreover, although I schooled in the US, I have worked at one of these schools  wink. Gave me the opportunity to compare across systems since this was supposed to be the top school in the country.

Insead is a business school, warwick's reputation likewise- a lot in maths/business. Some poeple claim its engineering school like Bristol is good- but it would be at pat with lower-class engineering depts in theU. Rep is also limited more to the UK.

Ignorance- have u attended school in both the US and the UK? Also take a good look at rankings of any sort- which are usually biased towards research, and are compiled by very biased groups but they still have US schools on top. British/European schoolsare reputable in Europe. However, You would never see any nobel laureate or field medalists be churned out from them in the coming future. I have a good idea of the schools that are reputable in the UK/Europe.Unilag/UI are good schools in Nigeria, so is University of Capetown in South Africa but that does not mean they are equivalent to Harvard- is that really that hard to understand.

Really? Retard  grin. I know you did not attend any of the golden 5 in the UK judging by your previous comments, its simple deduction. As a molecular biologist from a supposed UK institution- you should be aware of the history of molecular biology research. I would expect that your program exposed you to research papers on molecular biology. I would also have expected you to notice while reading those papers, that contributions to molecular biology and biophysics started at MRC Cambridge laboratory and then moved to Yale MBB, and has stayed there for a while.

The US has always lagged in basic education, its not their forte, but they seem to be doing something right if they are still producing the greatest scientific innovations. FYI UK Schools have not produced any significant contributions to science bar MRC laboratory at cambridge- which I pray to work for Amen  grin grin grin. Japanese Universities have surpassed British Universities- no one in the US thinks British schools are as good as Japanese schools for science. Birmingham ko, sausageham ni

@truly. . .I'm glad you have identified the major difference between Christianity & Islam.

While Islam has earthly political dimensions. . .Christianity as enunciated by our Lord Jesus Christ is focused on heaven.

The Israelites were initially of the opinion that the Messiah as prophesied in the Old Testament of the Bible (Jesus) would be a political leader after the mould of King David and deliver them from Roman occupation(via warfare etc),but he made it clear to them in the Gospels (esp John 16),that he was on earth to reconcile mankind WITH GOD.

Conversely the Holy prophet Mohammed(pbuh) was a POLITICAL leader, hence the ease at which ,political grieviances (e.g Taliban,Hamas,Hezbollah),can take on a religious toga.

So I appreciate its difficult to have your faith been brought to disrepute like this, but its difficult (like Osama Bin Hiding said) to completely dissociate Islam from politcal aggitation & war.

There lies the difference,Jesus Christ was fully pre-occupied with SPIRITUAL WAR,but the same cannot be said about Islam. . .Sad but true. . . . . cry

NYC bomb suspect nabbed aboard Dubai-bound planeBy TOM HAYS and COLLEEN LONG, Associated Press Writers Tom Hays And Colleen Long, Associated Press Writers
1 hr 2 mins ago

NEW YORK – A U.S. citizen who had recently returned from a five-month trip to his native Pakistan, where he had a wife, was arrested at a New York airport on charges that he drove a bomb-laden SUV meant to cause a fireball in Times Square, federal authorities said.

Faisal Shahzad was on board a Dubai-bound flight at Kennedy Airport when FBI agents and New York Police Department detectives took him into custody late Monday, law enforcement officials said. One official said he claimed to have acted alone.

U.S. authorities "will not rest until we have brought everyone responsible to justice," Attorney Eric Holder said early Tuesday, suggesting additional suspects are being sought.

Shahzad, 30, is a naturalized U.S. citizen and had recently returned from a five-month trip to Pakistan, where he had a wife, according to law enforcement officials who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the investigation into the failed car bombing.

Investigators hadn't established an immediate connection to the Pakistani Taliban — which had claimed responsibility for the botched bombing in three videos — or any foreign terrorist groups, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

"He's claimed to have acted alone, but these are things that have to be investigated," the official said.

Another law enforcement official said Shahzad was not known to the U.S. intelligence community before the failed bombing attempt.

The U.S. attorney's office in Manhattan was handling the case and said Shahzad would appear in court Tuesday, but the charges were not made public. FBI agents searched the home at a known address for Shahzad in Bridgeport, Conn., early Tuesday, said agent Kimberly Mertz, who wouldn't answer questions about the search.

Authorities removed filled plastic bags from the house overnight in a mixed-race, working-class neighborhood of multi-family homes in Connecticut's largest city. A bomb squad came and went without entering as local police and FBI agents gathered in the cordoned-off street.

Shahzad was being held in New York overnight and couldn't be contacted. A phone number at a listed address for Shahzad in Shelton, Conn., wasn't in service.

He used to live in a two-story grayish-brown Colonial with a sloping yard in a working-class neighborhood in Shelton. On Tuesday morning, the home looked as if it had been unoccupied for a while, with grass growing in the driveway and bags of garbage lying about.

Neighbors offered diverging descriptions of Shahzad but agreed that he kept to himself. One, Brenda Thurman, said Shahzad had told her husband he worked on Wall Street, while another neighbor, Audrey Sokol, said she thought he worked in nearby Norwalk.

Thurman, 37, said he lived in Shelton with his wife and two small children until last year.

"He was a little bit strange," she said. "He didn't like to come out during the day."

Sokol, a teacher who lives next door to Shahzad's old house, said that he would wave and say hello and that he seemed normal to her.

Law enforcement officials say Shahzad bought the SUV, a 1993 Nissan Pathfinder, from a Connecticut man about three weeks ago and paid cash. The officials spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the case.

The vehicle identification number had been removed from the Pathfinder's dashboard, but it was stamped on the engine, and investigators used it to find the owner of record, who told them he had sold the vehicle to a stranger. As the SUV buyer came into focus, investigators backed off other leads.

The SUV was parked on Saturday night on a busy midtown Manhattan street near a theater showing "The Lion King." The explosive device inside it had cheap-looking alarm clocks connected to a 16-ounce can filled with fireworks, which were apparently intended to detonate gas cans and set propane tanks afire in a chain reaction "to cause mayhem, to create casualties," police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.

A metal rifle cabinet placed in the SUV's cargo area was packed with fertilizer, but NYPD bomb experts believe it was not a type volatile enough to explode like the ammonium nitrate grade fertilizer used in previous terrorist bombings.

Police said the SUV bomb could have produced "a significant fireball" and sprayed shrapnel with enough force to kill pedestrians and knock out windows.

A vendor alerted a police officer to the parked SUV, which was smoking. Times Square, clogged with tourists on a warm evening, was shut down for 10 hours. A bomb squad dismantled the explosive device, and no one was hurt.

But Holder said Americans should remain vigilant.

"It's clear," he said, "that the intent behind this terrorist act was to kill Americans."

Authorities did not address Shahzad's plans in Dubai. The airport there is the Middle East's busiest and is a major transit point for passengers traveling between the West and much of Asia, particularly India and Pakistan.

Dubai-based Emirates airline said three passengers were pulled from Flight EK202, which was delayed for about seven hours. The airline did not identify Shahzad by name or identify the other two passengers.

The aircraft and passengers were then re-screened before taking off Tuesday morning, and the airline is "cooperating with the local authorities," Emirates said in a statement e-mailed to the AP.

In Pakistan, Interior Minister Rehman Malik told the AP that authorities had not been formally asked for help in the probe but would cooperate if asked.

More than a dozen people with American citizenship or residency, like Shahzad, have been accused in the past two years of supporting or carrying out terrorism attempts on U.S. soil, cases that illustrate the threat of violent extremism from within the U.S.

Among them are Army Maj. Nidal Hasan, a U.S.-born Army psychiatrist of Palestinian descent, charged with fatally shooting 13 people last year at Fort Hood, Texas; Najibullah Zazi, a Denver-area airport shuttle driver who pleaded guilty in February in a plot to bomb New York subways; and a Pennsylvania woman who authorities say became radicalized online as "Jihad Jane" and plotted to kill a Swedish artist whose work offended Muslims.

@Ifyalways: It was a pity you did not get my point in my last post. The point was this; the Bible reported that Jesus in many instances, especially at the time of his prayers for the removal of the "crucification cup" in the garden of geshemane, he prostrated his face and spoke in begging, praising, etc of the God that sent him. Such a prayer must have been the most important and the sincerest from him to God. It has to be more desired than "The Lord's Prayer" prayed at anytime. Afterall, he didnt pray it at the Garden's most crucial prayer deserving time, asking God to spare him of the impending death.

We see that the muslims pray just like Jesus prayed at the garden. The muslims and Jesus who prostrated their faces must be most God conscious at this time, showing the greatest reverence to God. This was my point; Those who pray like Jesus prayed at the garden are quite in higher level of spiritual consciousness than those who are praying the Lord's prayer, everytime, all the time, without ever prayed like Jesus of the Garden.
