Excessive Vitamin C in Early Pregnancy
By Lillian Downey

Staying healthy is vital during pregnancy. Vitamin C is touted as one of the keys to good health because of its immune-boosting reputation. While some vitamin C is essential to a healthy pregnancy, too much may lead to problems in both you and your baby, especially in early pregnancy. Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, you should get all of the vitamin C you need from a healthy, well-balanced diet and your prenatal vitamin, not from vitamin C supplements.

Safe Dosage
Safe dosage recommendations vary. The American Pregnancy Association recommends 80 to 85 mg daily, while the National Institutes of Health's Medline Plus suggests that pregnant women consume around 120 milligrams daily. The negative effects of vitamin C likely occur at dosages above the 2,000 milligrams tolerable upper intake level. Manage your intake by eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables for their vitamin C content, rather than taking supplements to meet your nutritional needs.

Newborn Scurvy
Too much vitamin C during pregnancy can cause your baby to be born with a vitamin C deficiency, also called scurvy, according to the American Pregnancy Association. When you ingest too much vitamin C, your baby can develop an intolerance or resistance. Your own kidneys contribute by increasing the amount of vitamin C they excrete, even after you stop taking high doses.

Pre-eclampsia Cure?
Pregnant women used to turn to vitamin C as a natural way to manage pre-eclampsia, or pregnancy-induced high blood pressure. The National Institutes of Health issued a statement in April 2010 indicating that, according to its research, vitamin C supplements, usually taken in combination with vitamin E supplements, do not reduce your risk of pre-eclampsia or minimize its negative effects on you and your baby. Pre-eclampsia can cause growth restriction in your baby and may lead to stroke or heart attack for you. The condition must be closely monitored by your health-care provider.

Miscarriage
High doses of vitamin C may cause miscarriages, which prompts some women to use the vitamin as a home remedy for abortion. There is much controversy surrounding this concept, but some health practitioners believe that vitamin C encourages menstruation, resulting in a miscarriage, explains Pregnancy Baby Care. The amount of vitamin C found in a prenatal vitamin or other multivitamin does not have the high doses that may result in miscarriage, but if you have concerns, talk with your doctor about possible complication

Politics / OMAR BANGURA From Sierra Leone Has This To Tell Nigerians; by Iyomomoreloaded: 1:27pm On Dec 31, 2016
OMAR BANGURA from Sierra Leone has this to
tell Nigerians;
"I don't think you guys know what you are
playing with. You can call each other names and
laugh about it now but when you end up inciting
hate here as I read through your posts here and
a real civil war start in your country you will
regret what you are doing now. Your religious
and political leaders are trying to divide you
between religious lines and you are helping them
do that rather than standing up and say we are
all nigerians never mind our tribe, region or
religion. That's the only stand that will save your
blessed nation. The foreign powers pushing the
government to take certain decisions will
abandon you when you start killing each other
and reject you from running to their countries so
be careful. Our 11 years war in Sierra Leone was
not even based on religious or tribal difference
and see what we did to our country. The worst
conflicts are those based on tribal and religious
differences. See Central Africa, Bosnia. My heart
bleeds when I read what you guys are saying
because I know what this will lead to. You will be
the losers all of you whether Christian, Muslim,
ibo, yoruba or hausa. Stand as one and save
your nation together because you have only one
Nigeria that has the potential to lead Africa."
PLEASE HELP SAVE NIGERIA!

@ spiceeamiee,
Is the cough productive?
Anyways, brew ginger and lemon tee and you get some relief. Cheers
Ginger isn't all that safe in 1st trimester, except in very small quantities (I think they say 200mg or so) or in meals

@spiceeamiee Kpele dear, pregnancy smx reduces our immunity. Cough is a viral infection and doesn't easily respond to meds. U can try ways to relieve the symptoms, till it finally goes on its own.
D dry harmattan air is not ur friend at all, do the steam bath ur doc advised,to help moisten and relax ur airways.
Fill a flask with hot/warm water, squeeze in some lemon juice and original honey, sip it throughout the day, say 30 mins intervals( u might think it's a lot of water, but you need to be hydrated). Refill as needed.
Take a tablespoon of honey 3-4x daily in place of cough syrup.
Prop ur head on 2 pillows when u lay down, as coughing gets worse wen our head isn't elevated.
Vit. C tabs 100mg 3x daily.
Hopefully you'll get relief.

WHY I'LL TEACH MY DAUGHTER NOT TO WAIT!!!

Purity comes in many forms.

I don’t really want kids. I’ve never really been into the idea of having kids. (My mother disagrees with me.)

But if I were to have a child…particularly a daughter.

(Jesus take the wheel.)

I would teach her not to wait.

For anything or anyone.

I would tell her not to wait around for a boy to come sweeping in and save her. I would make it a point to teach her that the world has tried to convince women that they need men to feel complete and that that is a big fat, ugly lie.

That she is too full of depth and honesty to “play dumb” for some insecure boy.

I would not let her grow up with the “sleeping beauty” mentality, thinking and expecting some guy to waltz up the ivory tower to wake her up.

I would tell her she is already awake and that she is full of fire that would melt that ivory tower to the ground.

And then I would tell her that when she sorts through the boys that have tried to knock on her door and been denied, that the right one will come. When he does that she needs to thoroughly understand emotional purity. She needs to know that purity comes in many forms and that emotional purity is equally as important as physical purity.

And then she would ask, “Mom, what is emotional purity?”

I would say, “Baby, emotional purity means that you know who you are and what your heart wants. While knowing what your heart wants, knowing that you are in control of your feelings. Your feelings don’t own you. You own them.”

I would tell her that she is not allowed to hide her true self for other people’s comfort.

She is a round house kick to the face of conformity and that that is the best thing about her.

I would tell her if there is an adventure in her heart that she should do everything in her power to make it happen. I will tell her to rally her resources, seek advice from mentors and close friends and then to go fight for what she wants.

I would tell her that the world has been waiting for her since the beginning of time.

I would tell her that she is 1,000 bouquets of roses and a million adventure novels wrapped up into one.

I would sit her in front of the bathroom mirror, like my mother did for me, and make her repeat over and over the things that she loves about herself, even if she didn’t necessarily believe them at the time. She needs to hear that vocally and I’m going to make sure she does.

After our talk, I would hug her tight and say,

“The world is yours. Go get it. I’ll be right behind you the whole time.”

Health / Pregnant Doctor Carries Son Into The Theatre While Performing A Cesarean Section by Iyomomoreloaded: 8:07am On Dec 28, 2016
Kenyan doctor Swabra Swaleh Breik shared this photo along with the moving story behind it on her Facebook page:

I hate and love this picture because it depicts my life, to be specific my career life in equal measures.

I had my Sick and cranky son with me in theater because on that specific call week, I had no nanny,my able nanny was at a burial. My partner was away, we worked in different hospitals hundreds of kilometers apart. It was a weekend, so no colleague would have helped.

The understaffed Olkalou district hospital has only one doctor covering the hospital every night and all weekend. no nurse would have helped carry my Temi, they were engaged in labour suite, the only available nurse covering the hospital had gone for a referral to nakuru pgh. everything had worked to lead us here.

I was three months pregnant. It was not the first time, this had happened severally, mostly when, like any mother, previous nannies would be overwhelmed by my call weeks.

I hate that I have my son in theatre when he should be well settled in his bed.
I hate that I was weak, tired and nauseous, and yet still yielded a knife in my hand.
I hate the fact I couldnt refer this woman, the mother and baby wouldn’t have made it.
I love that they both lived.
I love that my nanny came back and rescued us.

I hate that, after three years of service to Olkalou district hospital the county went ahead to deny me my well deserved study leave despite sponsoring every other doctor therein with less years experience simply because, in their words, “what assurance did they have I’d return as a consultant? “.my last name is swaleh, not kamau, kinyanjui, karanja…. I was forced into a resignation.

I hate that the county is still rife with corruption, extravagance, buying Christmas trees worth 2 million each, instead of dealing with all these inadequacies, failed systems, instead of paying me my well deserved money.

I’ve neared that point where I’ll no longer care, I’ve given way too much of myself, my family, my kid, my marriage, my emotions,my health, to this failed system. Like a damaged lover who takes all the life from you and leaves you as a shell of your former self.this failed system keeps stealing my joy in this great profession.

Only the CBA can right these wrongs. It is not government pay doctors. No. For what is a full pocket if I still have to go through all these motions again?

It is, government implement the cba. Simple. I want my stolen joy restored.
Kenyans should be asking for their joy too.

Tell me how comfortable you would be seeing your pregnant surgeon carrying a cranky sick crying toddler while operating on you?

Swedish photojournalist Lennart Nilsson gained global recognition after his mind-blowing photo series of human embryos got published in Life magazine in 1965. After spending 10-12 years trying to photograph the start and development of human fetus, Nilsson finally got perfect images that showed the conception and growth process of the embryo.
So how did he manage to capture such images? Using a cystoscope. Cystoscope is a medical instrument used to examine the urinary bladder, to which Nilsson attached a small camera and a tiny light and captured the process of child birth inside a mother’s womb.
Nilsson’s marvellous photograph collection was republished into a book version titled A Child is Born , which sold more than 8 million copies within the first week. There’s no doubt that what he created is truly magnificent and something everyone should see.

What do you think of these photos?

Nicoleswizzi wan shine eye! tongue Lol. Generally they say alcohol is prohibited in pregnancy, but some people still take it. I don't think if u take it in a very responsible dose, it will harm. It should be a treat, not everyday indulgence. Some doctors prescribe beer for pregnant women, for relaxing d nerves or so.

Don't worry dear, it's your body adjusting to pregnancy, last pregnancy I had it from 7-15 weeks , dis time around it started around 6weeks. Doc says no cause for alarm, as long as its not accompanied by pelvic pain, no need for unnecessary medication. It's part of the package grin
