Nairaland General › Re: Nairaland's Journey To 1 Million Members by Jarus(m): 7:34pm On Jan 18, 2013
mukina2: Hello Nairalanders

as we get over a million members, we want to thank everyone that has been a member, a guest, and everyone who contributed to the growth of the forum.

When Nairaland started in march 2005, it was a brain child of Seun, and was from mobilenigeria.com his first ever project. He was the sole moderator/admin, slowly the forum started growing, there were few members but the forum was active.

In 2006, was when the forum grew even bigger, most people, more fights grin, more trolls, and you had the cliques, sports/romance derailers union but seun tried all he could to keep it balanced and under control, then he was the great obantalapipipi. grin,( obey the rules otherwise . .) most sections came to life, then Business, Job/vacancies, sports, romance and forum games where the 'happening' boards. Then a popular lady Papermoon faked her death, used another id to tell nairalanders 'she' died, people started mourning, changed signatures/locations etc,the thread grew only for her to come and post that she was just joking, people got angry, insults, missiles, bombs flew left right and centre, the drama got so bad that Seun had to introduce a new rule, 'It is a grievous offence to announce the death of a Nairaland member on the forum without the admin's explicit approval' Papermoon's saga was the reason behind this rule. Another popular lady posted a picture she lifted off google as a picture of her kitchen, some 'detectives' on nairaland found out it was fake and they had a field day.
class of 2006 rocked! cool

In December 2007, spammers/scammers became so much that seun had to lock the forum, forum members helped to fish out the scammers/spammers, the ones they got, were banned and the forum was back on course.

In 2008 we had the first set of 5 mods, Mukina2, Iice, FOD, Sam Milla and USPRY1. the forum got new active members, some oldies still stayed and some sections grew more.

In 2009, more moderators, new sub boards, new members and the politics section became very active, it was purely debates and legit arguments.A Popular Nairalander Jarus started forum awards.

2010 the forum became 5 years old, more moderators, more activity, more trolls sad, more guests (we appreciate them) more users. We also lost a member Bawomolo. cry

2011 and 2012 our traffic improved quite well, we crossed some milestones on google, we reclaimed our top spot in Nigeria/Africa . we also lost Perx cry

This year the forum will be 8 years old and we crossed over a million members
Happy to be part of Nairaland milestones.

In any case, let the followers of this thread read all the sides and go with whatever argument they find convincing. While I have a feeling that the OP is scam, I wish anyone that believes otherwise good luck.

2sexy: Ah... that is were most people miss it. Should I tell you that there more people like that at the romance section? I even know of a nairalander who works for a multinational but he hardly comes around the career section.

This what many of you are missing. Must everything in life be hard? so because she does not post here that makes it a lie... if you care to know where she worked, PM me and I will tell you with PROVE....

From what I know about Kitty-Kat, she does not believe in all that everything has to be hard to make it work...

What you believe is what will work for you...
While I also wont say being an oil coy staff doesn't mean one shouldn't participate in romance discussions (Debosky is actually an IOC person, but catches fun in romance section, in those days at least. Ditto for Davidylan) but I think I understand what oyb is talking about.

Well, oyb himself is known to me as an ex-senior colleague and a manager in an O&G company, before anyone says he doesn't know anything about the industry.
Sports › Re: Zambia, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia - AFCON 2013 Group C by Jarus(m): 1:31pm On Jan 17, 2013
Well, as usual, Nigeria will reach Semi-Finals, and most likely come back home with a medal. We have failed to qualify for semi finals only twice in all our appearances in the last 35 years, except in 96 and 98 that we didnt go for political reason and in 2012 that we didnt qualify.

Once we participate, semi final is almost a guarantee. Only in 1982 (group stage) and 2008 (quarter final) that we particiapted and didn't reach semi final. I don't see this changing. SE will reach semi-finals. We have 2 golds(1st), 4 silvers (second) and 7 bronzes (3rd) - the record medal for any country. I don't see us doing worse.

Vikin: If he is one of those with Oba of Oba land as community chief, it's possible....don't judge by the way he types his English. But in OP case what I see its someone with a contract position( not too experienced and knowledgeable) but to give him the benefit of doubt, even if he is in permanent position, it must be through the quota system of community.

Trust me, they never cross a certain point unless they go further to buy other certificate that will make them climb higher the ladder.

But you still find a way to sort them out.
There are a number of them here too. We even have Community Liaison Officers in all our local governments of operations.
These are indigenes of host communities, just to placate them, lest they mobilize to disrupt your operations.

I have been talking having in mind professionals (engineers, geologists, accountants etc) who are permanent staff, not these community guys.

I am actually not against us discussing jobs in oil and gas industry in this thread. Networking is very good and can be helpful, not only in O&G but anywhere. In fact, I entered the thread with that aim. I came to share my insights and ideas. Of course, I can't guarantee anybody job, but I can offer useful tips. That was my intention from outset. But we should not throw lies around. I find that disgusting.
Career › Re: Oil Workers Zone. by Jarus(m): 11:37am On Jan 17, 2013
It is easy to believe Vikin. His aura is oil-esque.

I can talk more for Shell, and probably Chevron. I can't vouch for Mobil as 100% merit-driven, but definitely not through gateman too. I have a classmate there that got there in manner I suspect to be backdoor (I may be wrong, but it appears so). Her dad, before retirement, was a big gun in Mobil, worked there for 30 years and retired as a GM. We suspect he influenced the lady's entry. I know many other oil companies and I seriously doubt you can get a permanent position with dropping physical CV (do people still use paper CV?).

However, my major concern here is the OP saying he is(or was) a Shell permananent staff and he can get people into Shell just like that!
Career › Re: Oil Workers Zone. by Jarus(m): 11:25am On Jan 17, 2013
You can never 'enter' Shell through a gateman. Never. Shell has a recruitment policy that is global(not only Nigeria o. They have a standardized global procedure, involving series of stages, the most rigorous being SRD. Well, if anyone falls for scam, that's his/her own cup of tea. Even the daughter of the former CEO of SPDC and now Chairman of SPDC, MS (initials),couldnt get his daughter (name withheld) into Shell, rather she was working for another oil company (whose name I'm not mentioning as a related party).

These guys have standard procedures that are followed globally, not just in Nigeria. Of course I'm talking about permanent staff. Contract staff are provided by third parties, anyway.

Kingsleyinfo: Rightly pointed out,
Personally i don't care if the guy is a shell staff, if he gives me valid information that's ok for me.

What 2sexy is saying is that, please next time vet the information not the person.

People should know better than to give money to anyone for Job related issues, all major multinationals have it on their site to that effect.

Some of us here could have easily verified the identity of the original poster, but that's not the point
The point is to understand the need and requirements of the industry and channel our energy properly.

I get it when you say shell staff are high performance people, and its normal to suspect anyone that doesn't live up to that billing
Howbeit, we must also learn the skill of diplomacy in communication, I can raise red flags in a person's post without even having to say it point blank.

And please stop overrating shell staffs o.... let me stop there abeg.. grin grin grin
End of discussion.

2sexy: That is where you are wrong, woman... When you dont know someone, dont say they are lying. Kitty Kat happen to be who she has presented herself to be--a staff of one the multinational oil companies in Nigeria. We are not talking about indigenous oil servicing companies.

She has made her mark in the industry. Does a person have to be Wole Soyinka or a Chinua Achebe before you accept that he or she is a staff of an oil company? That is what I am trying to find out because when this thread was created, a lot of people Jarus and co reviewed the OP as a fake person, possibly a scammer ,simply because he wrote in short hand.

Job hunt is no different from the sphere of life, a complex entity where a lot of things happen. People get job in different ways and I have seen it happen.
Honestly, I have stopped pitying Nigerians that fall for scam. This has only reinforced my position.

This guy is not a Shell staff for God's sake. This is not about short-hand or text, this guy cannot write simple English, nobody is asking for Soyinka-esque proficiency, this is about basic English. I have friends in Shell and have also undergone Shell recruitment process and I can tell a Shell staff from writing. Shell has perhaps the most rigorous recruitment process and half-bakeds will find it hard (impossible, actually) to scale it. There are Shell staff on Nairaland sef, and you hardly see them reveal it, rather, they code it.

This guy's aura is just lower than that of a Shell person, far lower.

I even doubt contract position with Shell sef. A number of my colleagues here are ex-Shell contract, and I know other Shell contracts.

At best, the guy worked for a servicing firm that had contracts/projects with Shell for months (or years)and know few internal things about Shell.

But if you don't believe and choose to fall for his scam, then good luck.
Jobs/Vacancies › Re: Imagine This Cover Letter: Can It Work Here in Nigeria? by Jarus(m):
In my former company, the biggest indigenous player in the oil and gas sector in Nigeria, one Nigerian from abroad sent a similar, sent similar daring email to the Group CEO. She must have researched our CEO's email address, probably contacting someone internally.

The Group CEO was amazed at the courage of the lady and replied her, copying all group staff, so we can learn:

Let me paraphrase the email (not verbatim pls):

This is not a scam sir. Please try to read in full. I am a Nigerian in United states, in my early thirties. I have ABC qualifications and worked briefly for XYZ in the United States. I am considering coming back home to Nigeria, and your organizations, which exploits in the oil and gas industry in Nigeria I have been following from here, comes to my mind.

Give me the job and I can assure you I will perform. blabla

Our Group CEO then replied, blindcopying all staff (not verbatim again):

Thank you for your interest in our organization. I would pass this to our HR and see if there is any opening that fits your profile.

I also did a similar thing when in 2006, just few days after I finished university. I researched teh email system at Accenture. firstname.surname@accenture.com. From newspaper readings I knew the name of their Country MD then (Omobola Johnson, now Minister for ICT). I generated th email address and sent my CV to her, boldly telling her what I can do. She replied, saying she had passed my CV to their HR. Their HR called me few days later for test, but because I hadn't collected my statement of results from my school, I couldn't attend the test. I got same invitation twice later and didn't show up too - one because I was already in an investment banking outfit and didnt have time to attend and the second time, I was far away in Sokoto state, doing my NYSC.

Personally, I have never been afraid to send emails to powerful people, the CEOs, after all, the worst is to ignore. Only couple of weeks ago I sent an email to CEO of Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria to wade into an issue involving me (service-related, not job related o) his lower staff were taking for granted, and I got results immediately.

Good one. Even in Nigeria, the guy is underrated and 'forgotten'. Nigerians dont even know he is their country's all-time 3rd highest goal scorer. So it is easy to forgive the British and EPL followers for forgetting or underrating him.

I agree. If someone told me 7.6m (which I have spent to date) wont finish it, I may not have started in the first place.

I started, thinking 3m will do it. But here I am, 7.6m gone, and still not looking like it wont it 10m. But scope and taste changed from the original plan.

But just start, even with 500k. I started with 1m.

Afam4eva: Which one is Kwara Yoruba again? The one spoken in Ilorin or Offa?
We both add 'fa' to our sentences, but unlike Ilorin, we don't call head 'eri', rather 'ori', which is what the mainstream Yoruba people call it.
