You’ve got a very valid point, Debosky.

But I don’t think it’s that difficult to set aside personal views on the matter. It only takes average maturity and I’m sure the Coordinator did not just choose the Judges randomly.

My personal view is against the motion, but judging criteria is well set-out that it will take extra-ordinary interest to lose objectivity. Interestingly, I scored Coogar highest in the first round and joint-highest in the final round, yet he argued for the motion. The criteria even make it difficult to allow personal sentiments override objectivity. For example, it will be difficult to score Coogar low on delivery, just as it will be difficult to rate him very high on factual back-up.

PhysicsQED: If he thinks there are compromises, why not propose some?
He has always proposed both parties(Berom and Fulani elders) coming together and working out a way to underplay the indigene-settler dichotomy. He specifically opines that the earlier the issue of settlership is dropped the better - that the Berom should not see the Fulanis and others as settlers again, while the Fulani should replicate same in teh states they dominate. Of course, it will alter much the political power, as the 'indigenes' can always rely on their numerical strenght to get the larger share of political power, democratically. For example, it will be easier for Berrom to produce a LG Chairman via election in an area occupied by both, while a sensitive elected Chairman can consider appointing a Fulani Vice Chair. And where the Fulanis are more, if any, they can bank on their size to achieve political power too.

I have always respected Simon Kolawole, and he never disappoints.

He is to me the best columnist in the country today. He may snot be at par with the Sam Omatseyes of thsi word in wordsmithery, but his ideas on resolving the national problems are the best among Nigeria's legion of public commentators.

He is very detribalized, and hardly let religious affiliation becloud his opinions. The government can learn a lot from reading, digesting and taking clues from this guy's propositions.

I fully agree with all his submissions in the above piece, as with his other writings.
Politics › Bigotry And Hardline Posture The Causes Of BH, Plateau Crises - Simon Kolawole by Jarus(op): 7:34am On Jul 23, 2012
There are possibly one thousand and two reasons why Nigeria is like this, but an undeniable fact is that we are a nation of bigots and hardliners. There are people who specialise in stoking sectional tension. Boy, they enjoy it to no end! They spend all their days amplifying our ethnic and religious differences. Every opinion they hold and propagate is based on ethnic or religious sentiments. All their analyses and perceptions are derived from sectionalism. That is the only thing that excites them. I concede that religion and ethnicity stir up the deepest emotions in us. So maybe we should situate the hard-line positions being taken by some leaders and elders within this context.

However, the challenge, really, is to rise above these sentiments and deal with issues case by case. I cannot tell myself a Yoruba man is always right and a Christian can never be wrong. If I harbour such a mentality, it means whenever I see a Yoruba man and an Igbo man fighting, I will never listen to what the issues are. I will automatically join hands with the Yoruba man to pummel the Igbo man without asking questions. That is the life of hardliners. Yet common logic tells us that the world is not black and white. There are different shades of grey. I have been thoroughly appalled by the positions some respected commentators are taking on the Boko Haram insurgency and the Plateau civil war (it’s a civil war, friends, let’s stop pretending). I am now convinced, more than ever, that we are in for the long haul, except these hardliners—who seem to be having the upper hand in the public sphere—begin to pipe down in the interest of peace.

Hard-line positions will never resolve the crises. I want to focus on the Plateau war today as we continue to deal with the grim reality we have found ourselves. Why has blood been flowing like a river in the state? It depends on who you are asking the question. If you ask the Hausa/Fulani, they will tell you that after living in Jos for generations, they are still being treated as “settlers” by the Berom people who claim to be the “indigenes”. The Jasawa crave equality—they want to be seen as citizens not “settlers”; they would not mind having an emirate of their own in order to be able to fully express their religious beliefs within an Islamic set-up; they seek high-level political recognition such that they would be able to produce at least the deputy governor, if not the governor; and they want some form of affirmative action to guarantee them some political offices.

Now turn to the Berom and ask them the same question. Their answer will be something like this: this land belongs to us; the Fulani came to settle here and now they are trying to conquer us and lord it over us in our own land; what Uthman Dan Fodiyo couldn’t complete with his jihad, the Fulani want to get through the backdoor; we the Berom people have never been conquered by the Fulani, and we will never be conquered by them; the Urhobo, Yoruba and Igbo were living here long before the Fulani, yet they are not laying any claim to Jos—so why are the Fulani different? What the Fulani will not accept from “settlers” in Sokoto or Kano, they want to come and impose on us here! We will never accept that!!

With these hard-line positions from both camps, what are the prospects for peace? It doesn’t look exciting at all. Blood will continue to flow. We have not seen anything yet. It is very, very scary and disheartening. However, the way forward, in my opinion, is that the elders in these communities must for once begin to see the larger picture. The larger picture, in this instance, is peaceful co-existence. They must begin to ask themselves the hard questions: will bloodshed solve this problem? If we continue to hold on to our hard-line positions, what are the prospects for peace? Will there be absolute winners at the end of it all? Are there some compromise positions we can negotiate? Are there avenues we can exploit to stem the slide? Are there mechanisms we can develop to address these longstanding and divisive matters amicably?

Good one.

Just a few comments as a Judge in this contest.

NEWACCA
Your arguments are sound and persuasive. I also admire your tenacity. But I deducted 0.5 from your content score because you referred to Ahmadu Bello as a former Sultan of Sokoto. He was neer Sultan of Sokoto, he was Sardauna of Sokoto. The current holder of that position is Alhaji Abubakar Dan Alhaji or Alhaji Sheu Malami(can't recall exactly for now, and no time to consult Google). But altogether, you did a very good job.

COOGER
You raised the intellectual bar in the debate. I admire your command of English. Your versatility is no doubt impeccable. But you were too general. You hardly dwelt on specifics.

BREEZY
A fresh breeze. I like your calmly disposition. You were the dark horse in the race. You also did very well in logical analysis of the topic, but you would have done better if you backed up your arguments with more facts.

Altogether, all the contestants did well.

Initially, I wasn't so disposed to the idea that this clearly political topic should be debated by people outside the active politics section posters. But after this first round I agree with Cuddle that it's a better idea having non-regular politics section gladiators as debaters. It made the debaters go extra mile, do some searching and prepare well. NewACCA and Shymmex confessed to consulting Google, which is a good idea. The latter has never even stepped into Nigeria, just as the former is not your regular active political discussant. Altogether, I think it's a good showing from all the participant, far beyond my expectation. Let's keep this up guys. We may consider making this a weekly event(Saturday/Sunday) or last weekend of every month or forthnightly.

For specific comment about each debater's performance, I reserve that till after the exercise, since I'm a Judge and my scores should be the talking for now.
Kudos guys.

coogar: can the judges kindly explain what they graded? seeing 5 - 8 - 6 is a tad confusing.
oam4j, over to you!
There were five judges, so a debater's score of 7-8-8-7-5=35, for example means, Judge A scored him 7; Judge B, 8; Judge C, 8; Judge D, 7; Judge E, 5.

maclatunji: The 6 People You Need in Your Corner

Nothing incredible is accomplished alone. You need others to help you, and you need to help others. With the right team, you can form a web of connections to make the seemingly impossible practically inevitable.

1. The Instigator:
Someone who pushes you, who makes you think. Who motivates you to get up and go, and try, and make things happen. You want to keep this person energized, and enthusiastic. This is the voice of inspiration.

2. The Cheerleader:
This person is a huge fan, a strong supporter, and a rabid evangelist for you and your work. Work to make this person rewarded, to keep them engaged. This is the voice of motivation.

3. The Doubter:

This is the devil’s advocate, who asks the hard questions and sees problems before they arise. You need this person’s perspective. They are looking out for you, and want you to be as safe as you are successful. This is the voice of reason.

4. The Taskmaster:

This is the loud and belligerent voice that demands you gets things done. This person is the steward of momentum, making sure deadlines are met and goals are reached. This is the voice of progress.

5. The Connector:

This person can help you find new avenues and new allies. This person breaks through roadblocks into finds ways to make magic happen. You need this person to reach people and places you can’t. This is the voice of cooperation and community.

6. The Example:

This is your mentor, you hero, your North Star. This is the person who you seek to emulate. This is your guiding entity, someone whose presence acts as a constant reminder that you, too, can do amazing things. You want to make this person proud. This is the voice of true authority.

To a great extent, very true. I'm applying it to my life in general, not only career.

But in my own case, a single person, my elder brothers, takes almost all the persona. My childhood friend also assumes some.

1,THE INSTIGATOR: When I was going to the university, bros told me: "If you can make a First Class. I will send you abroad for Masters". I never looked back and to Allah be the glory, made it; although he didn't sponsor my masters eventually, but I lonely reap the full benefits today. My other instigator was a childhood friend, who entered same university one year ahead of me. He set me up in competition against another friend of his, who was in my class. . Every semester in Uni, my target was scoring higher than this lady. Although I later overtook her in year 3. At the end of the day, I was the better for my friend's instigation.

2,THE CHEERLEADER: To a great extent, my friend again. Always using me to boast among his other friends. I knew I can't let him down. My Dad is also very crucial. He stands solidly behind me. The fear of disappointing him fires me up.

3,THE DOUBTER: A VIP in the family whose exact relationship I prefer anonymous. It's always difficult meeting him, discussing with him. Clearly, he wanted good for me, but his intention can be misrepresented with the way he goes about it.

4, THE TASKMASTER: Same person in No 3 up there assumes this role in my life

5,THE CONNECTOR: My bro again. When I finished uni, he just collected my CV, reworked it, and circulated within Corporate Nigeria. Calls for tests and interviews started flying in here in there. Needless to say I was spoilt with employment choices.

6, THE EXAMPLE: He is 'The Example' too. He has the fastest career I have ever seen. Joined a company for pre-NYSC job in 1998 and 6 years later, by 2004, already the CEO of one of the company's subsidiaries. Now a junior director(higher than GM, lower than ED) in the Group at just 34. I know I can't achieve that again, but he is the best career example I look up to.

Chill, the ICAN that passed and gave you prize when you did well at Fondation, has nothing to gain failing you in Intermedite if you did well. Maybe you were complacent.

I also won prizes in Foundation, including First Prize, but flunked a paper in old PE1 and 2 papers in new PE1(post syllabus change) before eventually qualifying. One thing about me is I hardly predict wrong outcome of my exams. I knew I didn't do well in those 3 papers I wrote twice.

Nairaland General › Re: Top 10 Rivalries On Nairaland 2005-2012 by Jarus(op): 10:24pm On Jul 20, 2012
On the radar:
Odunnu v 190
Jennykadri v Mamagee
Davidylan v Sauron/Cooger
Nairaland General › Top 10 Rivalries On Nairaland 2005-2012 by Jarus(op):
Nairaland was 7 in March this year. In its 7 years of existence, 5 of which I was actively a participant, I have witnessed many fierce rivalries among some members. For history purpose, I have started this thread to discuss the rivalries and how they played out.

For now, three come to my mind (in no order)

1, Beaf v Oyb: Since 2009 when Beaf joined Nairaland, he has never seen eye to eye with oyb. Both of them are always at the opposite heads of debates, always following one another about, throwing tantrums and punches, both serving bans in the process. So hot are their stand-offs that if it were to be real life, necks would have been wrung.

2, Beaf v Gbawe: For anybody familiar with Nigerian politics, it is well known that ACN are the biggest opposition to ruling PDP. Same has been playing out on Nairaland since at least 2010. The opposition camp is led by Gbawe while the PDP/GEJ camp is led by Beaf. Anywhere these two guys meet, it's war.

3, Olabowale v Davidylan:From 2006 through 2009, when the Nairaland Religion section was in its fiecest phase, there were two main gladiators: Davidylan and Olabowale. Olabowale, now out of Nairaland, led the NL Muslims ably supported by Babs787, while Davidylan and his lieutenant, Ohsisi, marshalled from the Christianity tent. With keyboards being smatched and phone keypads being punched, the Religion section was by far the hottest on Nairaland then. Seun's joker, albeit forced, of creating a separate childboard for the Muslims, to a reasonable extent, calmed frayed nerves.

4, Tpia v Funmi series:
One of the fiercest rivalries in the early years of Nairaland was that between Tpia and a lady called Funmi, who operated under different monikers such as Hotfunmi, Deepzone, Redhotchic, Earthmama, Osunamazon, pepperspray etc. Any thread they 'sighted' one another, it was war!

5, Becomrich v Imaginary Seun: Becomrich aka Musiwa has been on Nairaland for many years and he has only one person as his rival: Seun! Anything that happens to Becomrich, real or imagined, to him it is caused by Seun. He even claims Seun is responsible for his bad English. He pulled out of Nairaland to form his own site he called 'Globe'. Although the other guy ignores him, Becomrich appears not done yet on his Seunophobia.

Can we have more? And with justifications. Bust-ups in just one or two threads do not qualify to be 'hot rivalry' as used here.
