Nairaland General › Re: Welcome the New Nairaland Political Section Moderator ( OAM4J) by Jarus(m): 8:53am On Jun 02, 2011
I am still very much around. Being a volatile section, it is only natural that one person cannot run it with maximum efficiency. Aisha2 excused herself, and even though one would have loved that she is still around with us, one can't help moving on. Hence the appointment of OAM4J as my partner.

Any issue against OAMJ?
Politics › Re: Matters Arising by Jarus(op): 10:41am On Jun 01, 2011
Yeah, I'm proposing 1 and 2, because:

1, They belong 2 different camps of opinions. The GEJ/Niger Delta people will have one of their own in authority and he will know better how to approach them. The other camp will also have someone in authority. One is also almost opposite of the other, working together, some level of friendship will be developed and it will be good for teh forum.

2, Both are toughie, straight-shooters. I think we need tough hands, while I continue with my own mid-way approach.

3, Both are located in time zones different from mine, so while I'm asleep here in Naija, they can be battling the tribalists running amok in the section.

4, Both may be controversial and hard on their opinions,  but they are intelligent, not the sickening tribal warlords that abound on the forum.

5, But we can't choose just one of them, as it will evoke uproarious protests from either camp.

If this idea is not bought by other authorities, then I will be okay with any of the three others.

The quintet are being considered as co-Mod(s) for this section:

1, Beaf
2, Kobojunkie
3, Odunnu
4, Andre Uweh
5, Mbulela

I'm disposed to working with anyone or two of them.
For strategic reason, No 1 & 2 are however mutually exclusive. It's either we take both of them or none of them.
If it is decided that we are not settling for them, then anyone or two of the other 3 will be selected.

Business › Re: Why Are We Not Making Money Like Dangote? by Jarus(m): 9:41am On Jun 01, 2011
Kilode has said it all, everybody can't make money like a Billionaire, just like every student cannot make a First Class or every staff rise to become CEO.

For those saying he acquired his wealth illegally, this is most sickening. Dangote shot into national limelight in 1996, but he had been doing his business, making money between 1977-1996, when he was just an average millionaire, upcoming businessman. Truth is, before even you get government attention, you must have been rich(thru your personal efforts) to some extent. Why can't every Alhaji Danmasa or Chief Olawale or Chief Eze, CEO of DOE Investment Ltd, have access to government? Reason: Before you get govt attention on large scale, you must have make your mark before.

And anotehr question, is it only Dangote that had government patronage? Why are the Arthur Ezes of this world not as rich as Dangote, despite having unlimited access to FG under Abacha?

And for the person that mentioned introduced tribe/religion into Dangote's source of wealth, one can only shake one's head. Dangote's greatest govt benefactor was Obasanjo government, a Christian/Southerner.

Let's give it to the guy, he dey try. There is no way you can that rich in a capitalist system and ignore government, but before you even have access to government, you must have worked your azz off on your own.

I however agree that 500,000 in 1977 was big money, very big money, like 10m today, but notwithstanding, even with 100m start-up capital, very few of us can grow the money into Billions in 20 years like Dangote did, teh reason why the children of Abiola, SB Bakare, Henry Fajemirokun, Odutola etc despite the hundreds of millions bequeathed to them, couldn't stand even those that started with meagre capital.

All comments read and noted.

The forum owner reserves the right to choose a moderator using the system he wants. If he wants election, so be it, but I don't think the CEO of Zenith bank will appoint a Manager by open voting. He knows those he can work with. Just consider that.

And for those moving for Aisha's impeachment, she has resigned voluntarily long ago, so carry your motion go another place.

I'm already suggesting three names for Admin to consider as co-Mod for me. I will also suggest the 3 mods and time-zone considerations for him.

i fail to understand what you mean by the bold part.
the place is still filled with all sort of silly ethnic threads. What exactly have these authorities done, that you are applauding?
The 'report to moderator' button is it not valid?
They did things. For example when I accessed NL thru my phone(from where I cannot perform Mod duties of deleting, moving, locking etc) I saw a lot of tribal threads, which I was not able to remove. When I opened this place thru my system to remove them, they had been cleared by someone else, obviously Admin or Supermod. Hence, the 'bolded part'.

The level of trolling is not only irritating, it has become tiring.
If permanent action is not taken against these ethnic jingoists, this problem will persis
With due respect to all hard working mods,i often wonder if this site runs on auto-pilot.
It's not run on auto-pilot.
Anything that is public has the challenge of control. The publicness brings the issue of limited control. Except one will sit here 24/7, being in every thread at the same time, it is impossible to have a perfect public forum. There is no way one can know the intention of a registrant at teh point of registration, and even when banned, they simply register a new ID, you keep banning and banning.
A perfect forum doesn't exist anywhere. Looking for perfection on Nairaland, to me, is removing humanness from forum handlers.

Saw your pic with Finance Minister Olusegun Aganga the other day and I pray when I grow up I want to be like you(lol), rubbing shoulders with Ministers, winning global awards.

I have never doubted your potential, right from your Ife days when as a Jambite and you in final year, I used to see you read at the thick of the Bush in central mosque. Good to see you turn into a world-class professional in short time.

This one sounds like folklore but I'm sure some parts of it are true

Monkelewu – The healer of Saki

Oral tradition has it that Monkelewu was born in a small village near Igboho or Saki (can’t remember which). She was reported to have been born bearing a water pot and unusually large bosoms (Omu roro).

From a young age, she referred to the water from her pot as omi ogun (medicinal water) and could use it to cure all ailments known to man. When she became ripe for marriage, all intended suitors would immediately reject her on account of her unusually large bosoms once they saw her. She continued in her role as a healer to her people.

In far away Saki, Okere –a king, warrior and hunter who often suffered from a mysterious stomach ailment that had defied all known cures heard about Monkelewu and summoned her. She was able to cure Okere’s ailment who had asked for her hand in marriage in return.

She was said to have pleaded with the Okere to never slight her on account of her bosom; he also asked her to never enter the room where he kept his powers because the presence of another mortal in the room would render useless the potency of the powers.

Okere went hunting one day leaving his most powerful aso agbara to hang in the sun and the clouds gathered as if a storm was on its way; Monkelewu knowing that this particularly vest must not become wet and fearing that Okere would not return in time took a stick to pick the vest and threw it into the ile agbara facing backwards.

Okere returned in time but assumed that Monkelewu must have entered the room he’d warned her not to enter and retaliated by doing what he had warned him not to do.

Monkelewu angry and hurt took her water pot and ran from Okere’s palace until she got to a place near Ofiki where blinded by her tears she fell and broke her water pot.

Okere went in search of his beloved having been informed of how she saved his vest, but only found and an endless flow of water from the broken pieces. The water from the pot became the Ogun River and in anguish Okere swore to never set his sights on the Ogun River ever again.

Politics › Re: Great Leaders In Nigeria's History Before Total Colonisation by Jarus(m): 4:57pm On May 26, 2011
MOREMI AJASORO
Moremi hailed from Ile Ife, a kingdom that is said to have been at war with an adjoining tribe who were known to them as the Forest people (Ìgbò in the Yoruba language, though the said tribe is believed by scholars to have had no relation to the contemporary Ìgbòs of modern Nigeria). Scores of Ife citizens were being enslaved by these people, and because of this they were generally regarded with disdain by the Yoruba city-states.

Moremi was a very brave and beautiful woman who, in order to deal with the problem facing her people, offered anything she had to give in sacrifice to the Spirit of the river Esimirin so that she could discover the strength of her nation's enemies.

In a manner that has certain parallels with the biblical stories of Moses, Miriam and Esther, she is then said to have been taken as a slave by the Igbo and, due to her beauty, married their ruler as his anointed queen. After familiarising herself with the secrets of her new husband's army, she escaped to Ile-Ife and revealed this to the Yorubas who were able to subsequently defeat them in battle.

Following the war she returned to her first husband, King Oramiyan of Ife (and later Oyo), who immediately had her re-instated as his Princess Consort. In order to fulfil the pledge she made to Esimirin before embarking on her mission, her son Olurogbo was given in sacrifice to the Spirit because this is what it asked her for when she returned to its shrine.

The Edi Festival is said to have then been started as a means of celebrating the sacrifice the princess made for the people of Yorubaland. Furthermore, a number of public places are named after the princess in contemporary Nigeria, such as the Female Halls of Residence in the University of Lagos and Obafemi Awolowo University.

Now, Sule Lamido has finally lost it. This was the same man that got a boy arrested for insulting him on Facebook.
If you don't like DT's coverage of your activities, stop reading it or prompt your PR team to work more, or, better still, establish your own newspaper like Osun's Aregbesola's Osun Defender or Tinubu's The Nation. To ban a newspaper reporter from being present at public functions, just because you're also there, is dictatorial, and reminds one of military.

If one remembers that this was the same progressive Sule Lamido, trained together with Abubakar Rimi, by Aminu Kano in the second republic, one can only shakes one head. Aminu Kano must be turning in his grave for this.

Two, I agree DT has sympathy for the North and Islam, but it will be most unfair to accuse them of this while forgetting other papers like Tribune and Champions which also have regional/religious bend. DT is owned by a northerner and has the North as its main base.

Btw, Theophilus Abbah, one of their Editors, is a Christian.

Spent almost 2 hours between Abuja and Lagos. I slept immediately we were airborne, woke up, checked time, more than the expected 45 minutes, joked with the man beside me that 'we've been on air for more than 1 hr, abi we don pass Lagos ni?', and he told me that there had been an announcement while I was sleeping that we were having difficulty landing. Hovered for another 30 minutes before being able to land.

Meanwhile, thread moved to Travel Section.

Jarus, Kwara, Yoruba.

To think all these years, I have not been able to figure Becomrich's state, but I'm sure he is not from Kwara, only schooled in Kwara. I have a feeling he is from Oke Ogun side of Oyo state.

Also, Odunnu is not from Kaduna/Hausa. Only lived in the North, she's from the East.

Kobojunkie is from Lagos, I guess.

But for Police, I have not had much personal encounter wt them.

NYSC › Re: Which Institution Offers The Highest Salary For Nysc Workers by Jarus(m): 9:43am On May 24, 2011
Around 2006/2007 when I served, StanbicIBTC was paying 106k per month for a youth corper but you would have passed through normal recruitment process of test, interviews with EDs and CEO etc shortly before goin for service. A friend served there. But after finishing serving, the pay only rose marginally to around 120k.

But they cut it to 30k after my friend's set.

Most investment banking firms used to pay corpers 50k then but I don't know whether they have cut it now.

Now, most firms pay between 25-40k for corpers, but not just corper NYSC posts there, the ones that scale their internal selection(test) process.

Let's rise above ethnic and regional sentiments in our analysis.

This is politics, every party will back whoever it feels is best for it.

Tambuwal has been a ranking member of HOR since 2003 and he is widely respected as a rallying voice anytime commotion brews in the House.

I don't have any preference as regards these guys, but raising a baseless suspicion about somebody you don't know, just because it is CPC or he is Hausa, is what I find discomfiting.

By the way, why is ACN also backing Mulikat Adeola-Akande, a Yoruba/South-westerner?

Somebody in my company, one of those Nairalanders that only read, when he got to know that I was the Jarus he'd been seeing on NL all these years, in our Nairaland discussion on our way home(inside staff bus), was telling me that Sagamite was one guy he would like to meet, that he gained very valuable info from his posts(I think on this thread or that on foreign schools) that helped him make a decision sometime ago.

Only that Sagamite is not gentle; he doesn't take prisoners grin
