Abibio,
Probably Beaf meant substantial. As as last count, CPC has 6 Senators and 35 House of rep members, and most likely going to clinch the Kaduna North still pending. But this is no approval of CPC's faulty strategy of being about presidential election alone, in contrast to ACN which appear not interested in presidential but in Guber and legislative.

@Odunnu,
Who stoned GEJ in PDP rallies? Who chanted 'Sai PDP guber candidate, Sai Buhari' in PDP rallies? I'm not saying CPC members were not there, they were there but PDP crowds who wanted Buhari were also there? If all the 12m pple that voted for Buhari in the North were CPC members, why did CPC lose in other elections.

Informed verdict: the rioters were both CPC and PDP people who united for Buhari in presidential!
Politics › Re: North Embrace Pdp, Cpc Loses Again. by Jarus(m): 6:09pm On Apr 27, 2011
CPC has always been about Buhari, and he won his stronghold. I, for one, had never expected CPC to do well in NASS and Guber.

If you guys don't know, a lot of the rioters were PDP members who wanted Buhari ahead of their party's Jonathan, obviously due to zoning and religious sentiments.

Politics › Re: Secret Behind Sanusi Lamido's Appointment by Jarus(m): 7:29pm On Apr 23, 2011
How Sanusi was appointed was no secret to any follower of news at the time, especially readers of Newswatch and other investigative journals.

1, Yar'adua was aware of the mess in the sector, so reluctant to renew Soludo's term, especially as Soludo's romance with politics(confirmed by his contesting for Anambra guber shortly after) showed he was gradually losing the zeal and committment he started with.

2, Like any other top position, the North-South or, if you like Federal character factor was inevitable. The last 3 Guvs were from the South(Ogwuma, Joseph Sanusi and Soludo), so the next man for the job should be from the North. If you want to criticize this, blame it on your constitution.

4,Yar'adua knew virtually nothing about northern bankers/economists. A lot of names came up: Obadiah Mailafiah, Isa Yuguda, Mansur Mukhtar, Falalu Bello, etc

5, Yaradua consulted Dr Umaru Muttalab, FCA,FCCA, the north's most veteran and experienced banker. Like the Subomi Baloguns, Pascal Dozies of the South. Muttalab was MD of UBA in the 80's to early 90's, later Chairman of First Bank till 2009.

6, Muttalab had worked with Sanusi in FBN and knew his capability. He recommended him to Yar'adua, who knew nothing about him.

7, Sanusi's brilliance and do-it-right-no-matter-the-consequence was not in doubt. He was rated among the Top 3, if not the best, expert in risk mgt in the whole of Nigerian banking industry. He was nicknamed 'Mr Risk'. He was also known for being fearless, and taking fearless decisions, including refusing to append his signature to First Bank's contribution to Transcorp when Obasanjo arm-twisted Banks to contribute to Transcorps. Having analysed the risk, he concluded Transcorp was not worthwhile for FBN to invest in, as ED Risk Mgt. He was also always speaking against his co-CEOs that perpetrated shady deals to window-dress their performance, an action Intercontinental's Akingbola called demarketing.

8, Akingbola, Ibru and co, having known Sanusi, tried all their possible best, including, as I heard, raising billions, to forestall a Sanusi regulatorship, but it was too late. Sanusi scaled all hurdles, including dazing the bribed legislators at the screening.

9, Sanusi got the job and walked his past talk of let's-do-it-right.

I know many other things which I have written many articles on. The poster is actually not worth engaging as I have seen many other gaffes from his subsequent posts.

Just go ask Renaissance Professionals, if you know who they are.

When 2 years ago on NL here, some of us, who have studied him, were defending him against northern/Islamic agenda conspiracy theorists, they called us all sorts of names. His offence, to many Nairalanders and Nigerians then, was that he is aboki(wetin aboki sabi), he did not school in an Ivy League school, he studied Sharia etc. I'm happy I have been vindicated and the energy I put into making many Nairalanders see beyond their sectional nose did not go in vain.

Some of us will continue to defend people or ideas we see as noble, even if 95% of other Nigerians see it otherwise.
Politics › Re: Attn. Jarus, Where Is Aisha2? by Jarus(m): 7:37am On Apr 22, 2011
Pardoning many display of ignorance I have seen in the early part of this thread, let me try to let off the cat in this thread.

A lot actually went on underground between Me, Aisha2 and Seun in the run-off to that election. When threads sprang up by some people accusing me and Aisha2 tilting the section in favour of our candidate. I sent him a PM about one homepage topic I felt was misleadingly titled. The topic incidentally had something to do with Buhari and he accused me, albeit stylishly, of favouring Buhari. That allegation infuriated and I saw it as an attack on my integrity. The exchange continued and I tendered my resignation to him. He made several inquiries from some people I don't know and he said he got good comments on my objectivity and he retracted his accusation and pleaded with me to carry on. I rescinded my decision.

As for Aisha2, I'm aware she and Seun also had issues, especially on our(BB Integrity Vanguard) page on Facebook. At least, I'm aware of hot exchange btw them. And I'm also aware Aisha2 offered to resign as Mod. And I believe Aisha2 is away before she is having issues with Seun.

I also believe its been settled underground.

On other allegations against me, I can only ignore, because I have outgrown engaging in petty accusations, especially when such is coming from people that knew nothing about politics or political personalities.

Northerners should be grateful that they are Nigerians.
If Buhari or Ribadu had won, there probably would be no carnage in the north now, to warrant the agony.

We probably would have been writing about the agonizing Niger militants and non-militants now, who, based on their pre-election threat, had promised to unleash terror if their son did not win.

sir george:
Dear Jarus

I'm in my final year of mech.eng at a nigerian university.will probably be coming out with a 2.2.
I strongly desire a career in the IB industry so i've been reading a lot on financially related subjects like accounting and economics.I heard of the importance of spreadsheets and so i've started work on my excel skills also.My plan pre-NYSC and during NYSC is to get an internship in the IB industry or other financial related institutions.i'll probably go for an MBA after that.Been following the thread for a long time now and i've seen CIS and CFA come up.I'll like to know exactly how they can fit in with my short term plans.I've heard of the long hours and everything but if it were possible i would probably work for free.I guess that's the depth of my desire.I've always had a fascination about money markets( for me its not a hollywood or glamour thing).I really need a guiding hand right now so please feel free to point out any flaws in my plans.I'll really appreciate the advice.
I believe AJK and Sagamite have done justice to this.

Spreadsheet knowledge is key, but at entry level stage, you need no more than basic, maybe plus few extra things. No matter how great you are in spreadsheet, just coming fresh from Uni, I don't think any comapny will give you more than entry level position. Knowledge of spreadsheet, without knowledge of industry/practical factors, is almost useless. How will you generate your assumptions? etc I have a school mate(he was in accounting, I, Economics). Whe we entered labour market, he got offer with GTB. He was rated one of the Top 5 most knowledgeable guys in Spreadsheet in the whole of GTB in Nigeria, but he got no more than entry level. A couple of years later, he had an offer from my company, but they couldn't agree on pay. My company was not ready to pay his price because with 2 years experience, even if he was teh best spreadsheet person in Nigeria, the value he will add cannot be more than that of someone that has better knowledge of industry/business.

As for doing your pre-NYSC and NYSC in an IB firm, that's fully ok. That will prepare you very well for the practical knowledge of teh industry, and when you finish your service and join the industry fully, you will hit the ground running, hot. This is in fact the case with one of my brothers, who joined IBTC as a pre-NYSC staff in 1998, served there 1998/1999, became full staff 1999 after service, and 5 years later, in 2004, had risen to become the CEO of one their subsidiaries at 27, one of the fastest career rise anywhere. So it's a good idea you want to do pre-NYSC and NYSC there. If your interest is actually IB, pls join as early as possible and define your career goal.

As for teh MBA immediately after service, i will not advise you do that, as AJK and Saga said. Still on our case study, this brother of mine only did his MBA 2005/2006. Get enough experience before you do MBA pls.

Hello Jarus; tkb417 & Sagamite,
don't know if this is the right thread to do this.
a grad (agric - econs 2.2); acib (associate, CIBN) and working in the financial services (credit) for some time now. really really want to do the cfa but don't know where to go for lectures here in lag. secondly after finishing my cibn; there has been a deluge of different ideas- mostly ppl saying cfa is hard; expensive and irrelevant to a credit person. so i kinda need your help - do you think cfa is relevant to credit. i don't want to do the credit admin of nigeria thing; think its lame. i am yet to get any other credit prof body of repute. i am analytical; fairly good with numbers too. i just want to give my career a boost really. so what do u advise pls??
I have quit IB for O&G industry since 2008, so I'm not sure I have full insider info in the industry again, as someone like TKB will do. So bear this in mind in my response. I may be missing some things.
For any aspect of Finance, CFA is not only useful but golden. I, for one, don't believe an exam cannot be passed, although I admit some exams are very tough and very demanding. CFA is one of such. Is it tough? Yes. Should that discourage you? No and No. Can you pass? I believe you can, but with great deal of efforts.

CIBN is not an A-list professional exam, but no qualification is totally useless. Go for CFA, apart from the certificate, it sharpens your knowledge and makes you hot.

However, as an extra, let me advise you that apart from professional certifications and all that, one very important key to succeeding in one's career is smartness, versatility and mentorship. Broaden your skills, be aware in many things beyond your 'credit' thing, ensure you know everything about your 'credit' function not some monotonous, mechanical daily processes. This is a personal observation from my study of successful people(and some are close to me), especially those that rise to top without any support.
Politics › Re: Report Your Efforts On Buhari-bakare Team Here by Jarus(op): 12:43pm On Apr 20, 2011
I can take up the challenge, but the reason I have been so hesitant is that I have a no of groups I coordinate, which has not been easy for me. I've got a lot in my hand already - my primary job, moderating NL, coordinating one or two other groups, writing/public affairs commentary, attending to personal issues etc. All these for a young man trying to set his foothold strong. That's why I've been footdragging in initiating this. But if someone else is ready to take up teh challenge, I'm more than ready to support.
Politics › Re: Jonathan Suspends The Minister Responsible For Internal Security by Jarus(m): 11:43am On Apr 20, 2011
Even before I got full reports in papers today, when I saw the reasons put up there for teh sack, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I have read so many ridiculous comments, especially in teh early pages of this thread.
How on earth can some people believe that the 'Minsiter for Interior' is teh right person to sack when violence breaks out in a section of the country, when we have IG, NSA, CDS etc? That's one of the most ridiculous things I have read from otherwise informed Nairalanders.

The minister was sacked for anti-party activities, pure and simple, not because he did not perform his statutory duties. I thought anti-party activities should only call for sack of the party member by the party, not from the cabinet, if actually teh President is not that of PDP but of Nigeria.

1.jarus pls explain why there is a section for ethnic and tribal warfare when all u need to do is delete the topic.
I'm not the forum owner. The forum owner considers it necessary. And I reason with him. Tribalism and sectionalism is not about insults and name calling alone, you know.

2.pls explain why you allow people to repeat post continually i.e. same topic in 7 to 10 posts
It's a serious issue we are battling. We try to lock, and sometimes delete, multiple threads. But sometimes, same issue can be looked at from different perspectives, maybe thru different newspaper accounts or poster intention to use the story for own argument/point, different from what other posters used it for.

3. pls explain why there are more tribal and ethnic posts than other topics.
I don't have an answer to this. That's the general mindset of many Nigerians. And I can't stop a person from opening tribal threads. I can only act on it when it contravenes forum rules. Sectional threads ordinary dont contravene forum rules.

By Abubakar Sanusi

At times like this it is worth remembering the phrase popularized by TajuddeenAbdulrahim which I have borrowed for the title of today’s column. We have just gone through the most divisive election in our nation’s history.

Ethnicity, religion and money determined the outcome, along with control of the police. Fraudulent INEC staff and some naïve youth coppers played their part too. The rigging was massive, crude, cheeky and often violent. The PDP had a target to reach by hook or by crook. It was, after all, a ‘do or die’ affair, as BabaIyabo kept insisting. Now we can truly understand the significance of the “opinion polls” used to sensitize us to accept the inevitability of Jonathan’s landslide. Also, not a few so-called observers and NGO were bought to proclaim the election “free and fair”. The script was open for all to see. Some just refused to accept it was possible. Now we have the landslide or, as The Punchgleefully termed it, the “Jonathan Hurricane” I expected nothing less.

In a free and fair election Goodluck Jonathan may very well have still won. He had the spread, and there was no way the South-East or the South-South could have given MuhammaduBuhari 25 percent in any run-off. What was rather surprising was that the PDP wanted him to win in such a manner that they humiliate his opponents and show that even in the North they could get at least 25 percent anywhere they desire. CPC will now most likely go to court (for what it is worth) and put its’ fate in the hands of a less than credible judiciary. The PDP knew that the youth would probably burn a few places. But no matter what, they would get a chance to continue in power.

The unfortunate incidences in Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Hadejia, Zaria and elsewhere could have been forestall but for the greed of PDP stalwarts who, having collected billions, had to show something for it. But why not go for something credible? To win by a million votes or even less is still a win. I am ashamed and angered that for the next eight years I shall be governed again by the PDP based on a very fraudulent election. (Don’t let anyone tell you he is going after one term. The same arguments used to justify not challenging a sitting president would still be used, when the time comes)

But the character of Nigerian politics has been changed forever. We are now openly more divided along a religious and ethnic divide which shall come to haunt us in future. Corruption remains, the all-powerful party contractors and fixers are still in-charge and Jonathan has shown his other, truer side. He may very well succeed in fixing our electricity but at huge, unjustifiable costs. Next time around we may not just have 90 to 100 percent voter turnout in South-South, but we could very well have double the registered voters actually voting for PDP. But we shall, God willing, survive these next four or eight years.

Needless to say I did not vote for Jonathan because I believe Buhari would have made a better president. Even then, the recent spate of violence and arson in some parts of the north, understandable as it is, is tragic and unfortunate. I am, like a lot of people are, disgusted with the PDP’s habit or rigging and challenging those cheated to go to court. It smacks of arrogance and impunity. Still, it is imperative that this mayhem ends. We must all join hands to prevail on the Northern youth to stop. They should as an alternative, seize the opportunity offered by the betrayals and rigging by their rulers to ensure that they follow the Yoruba example. They should start ensuring that their preferred party captures their states so that next time around there will be no oppressor in power at that level who could steal their votes.

This is important not just to entrench democracy but to end our enslavement to a few politicians and their families. With or without Jonathan, Bello, Anenih or Tafida the northern states will survive. And Nigeria is bigger than all of us. Whoever is in power, the sun will rise tomorrow. Our people need water, schools, hospitals, roads, houses, food and jobs. These are mostly the responsibility of our local leaders. So, instead of lamenting and burning, let us organize to get those who are fond of stealing our money, and our votes, out of office. Killing them or burning their houses is wrong, illegal and un-Islamic and may even prove counter-productive. Those who steal our money or our votes should be dealt with through due process of law. Yes, some of us will feel cheated because our candidate did not lose fair and square but anger and violence are not the solution. Don’t get mad; get even.

I am not just advocating a change of governors or getting rid of the PDP. By all means keep those you think are doing a good job, not the blubber mouths tyrants who do not keep trusts nor have an idea of service. After that, insists that the new leaders perform honestly, creditably and justly. For far too long we have developed the “hakane, rankayadade” mentality (translation: Yes, your excellency). We must treat them as leaders not rulers, and make them accountable to us for all their promises. No need replacing one set of tyrants with another.

In addition, the significance of Abuja or the federal Government must be de-emphasized. We should focus on creating businesses for ourselves wherever we are. Government jobs and contracts are good for those who are lucky enough to get them. So are the permits, allocations and plots. The future however is local and green. We have the people and the land, let us start getting our priorities right and getting our affairs in order. Too much reliance on government makes the struggle for the presidency appear so important.

Finally, I hope those traditional rulers who wanted to push some candidates down our throats have learnt their lessons. They should simply wish those visiting them luck, pray for peace and maintain their neutrality.

I have issues with some areas:

1, 90% plus voters turn-out in some SE and SS is very curious

2, The 1.1m votes GEJ got in Kano is suspect. But I may be wrong here.

All in all, I honestly believe GEJ still stood a greater chance to win without rigging, the difference would not have been more than 2m.

Although this one is normal politics, if AC had delivered SW to Buhari thru alliance, that 2m difference would have been made up for and run-off set in.

In summary, I believe there was rigging but it only widened the gap from possibly 2m to 10m, and if they had struck the alliance run-off could have happened.
