ChrisKels: Same here bro. To me Aina's success with the Eagles at this afcon is already swaying some of them, especially the ones he is close friends with.
Ademola, Tomori et al
Lookman is now "close" to Nigeria.
I think almost all of them will want to play for Nigeria.
soetanoreoluwa: South Africa Coach Baxter Reveals Plans To Stop Penalty Box Predator Ighalo
South Africa coach Stuart Baxter has claimed that Bafana Bafana defenders will not man-mark Odion Ighalo when they face Nigeria in Wednesday evening's Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal clash in Cairo.
The former Watford striker has been Nigeria's most influential player at the ongoing tournament, having a hand in four (3 goals, 1 assists) of the five goals scored by the three-time African champions.
And Baxter has revealed that one of the ways to nullify Ighalo's threat is simply to cut off supply to the Super Eagles number 9.
''We don’t make individual plans for players in terms of man marking. We would solve that as a team,'' Baxter said.
''We would make it difficult for them (Nigeria) to play quality balls to their strikers and would defend like we normally defend.
''That is part of the ways you can make individual strategies to certain players. Being a central striker, Ighalo will fall into the back four as a unit, and we’ll screen the midfield which will make it difficult for him.''
Ighalo specializes in scoring from inside the penalty area and all his international goals have come from inside the box with the exception of his opener in a 4-0 win vs Cameroon in September 2017.
I have never been sold to the idea of Chukwueze starting but I am beginning to think he should start. We really need someone confident enough to take on all BB defenders if possible.
A problem I have is all our wingers are poor ball crossers (Musa, Simon, Iwobi, and even Chukwueze). Thankfully, they all have decent amount of skills and speed, and taking on the BB defenders and cutting inside remains our best bet in my view.
darado: @ Jarus plz help. Plz who knows about NNPC Governance Risk Management and Compliance (GRC) division? They travel for inspection/audit alot? I like work that carries me out of office. Thanks for anticipated response.
I have no knowledge of how often they travel, but I expect any compliance job to involve travel.
Bunique: I have recently seen replays of some of our matches at the 2013 afcon, all the group matches and the final menh to be honest our play was crappy.
True. The only good games were the wins against Mali and CIV.
edi287: Nelson Mandela challenge back in 04. We lost 2-1. I watched that game live at Ellis Park. We had a weak team but Martins was the main attraction. I still remember that last ditch tackle Aaron Mokoena made in the early minutes preventing Martins from acoring.
Martins was a beast in this game. I think that was his debut match for Nigeria.
That was the first time SA defeated Nigeria in like 14 years (or even first time ever), if I remember well.
Martins' Serie A friend, Ayodele Makinwa also played that game.
samtol4: Hate him or like him ...Rohr has given younger players like Osihmen, Henry and Chukueze opportunity to be at cup of nations ...though his tactics are too conservative for super eagles to play free flow football we are known for .Most of our locals are just too corrupt hence kills talent . The former one took Agbim to world cup and render the reserved bench useless .Before the match against Cameroon many people on this forum said this is our first test of strength and concluded the eagles will loose .once we won they change again " the team was just too luck " Again tomorrow when they defeat SA they will cry luck luck . Rohr is not Dutch coach or Spanish coach to play entertaining football ,he is more defense minded ....if he can improve his tactical changes during matches we will play final
lol
Maybe because he was a defender in his playing days
He played for Bayern and Bordeaux.
Spent 12 seasons in Bordeaux. Got French citizenship and that's where he is based till today.
Ran into him at the airport in Paris in October 2017. Had a brief chat and he said he was on his way home to Bordeaux after qualifying Nigeria for WC.
I remember Olofinjana was the Mikel Agu of this team
What was more impressive was Kanu's pass and not really Utaka's goal. Do we have players that can pass like that now?
Udeze was also another carpenter. Back then Enyeama hadn't unleashed
Back then when I was still quite optimistic.
One of my most memorable Eagles' matches. I watched it in Awo Hall as an undergrad in Ife.
The last 10 minutes of that game were the most tensed 10 minutes of any game I have ever watched. Eagles showed great resilience to stop them from equalizing as Camerounians put great pressure on us.
JJ won MVP in that tournament despite Nigeria getting knocked out in the semis.
darkelf: I told some people here that Moussa Marega is an overrated Striker. I will pick even Ighalo ahead of him any day any time.
How can you be a striker playing for Porto and not find the net in 4 games. So tell me what this guy brings to the table now. Some of you were defending him.
Una see now
It happens. Kanu as an Arsenal player played several CAN games without scoring.
Even Drogba did not score many goals in CAN.
Only few African players like Eto'o replicate club form in CAN.
fergie001: Several hours after the Bafana Bafana of South Africa ended the Pharaohs’ campaign in the on-going 2019 Afcon with a 1-0 defeat on Saturday, many Egyptians stayed rooted to their seats not believing what had happened to their darling team.
Thirteen years ago when Egypt hosted the African Cup of Nations, the Pharaohs displayed a brilliant performance by winning the trophy, beating the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire in the final.
Many Egyptians were looking forward to a repeat of the 2006 outing this time, but their campaign went up in flames in the round of 16 on Saturday, a few hours after the Super Eagles of Nigeria sent the defending champions, Indomitable Lions of Cameroon packing from the competition with a 3-2 defeat in Alexandria.
Though the encounter between the Pharaohs and Bafana Bafana took place in the capital, Cairo, the impact of the defeat was felt around the country. Like the typical Brazilian football fans, many Egyptians stayed away from other things, including sales and driving whenever the Pharaohs are on the field of play. The result was shocking. The entire country was like a graveyard.
And from Cairo to Alexandria, Zamalek, Port Said and to other major cities in Egypt, the fans wore long faces, mourning the defeat to South Africa. Now, the people want the Super Eagles of Nigeria to avenge the defeat for their country by beating the Bafana Bafana in their quarterfinal tie on Wednesday.
Those who spoke with The Guardian in Alexandria said they would pay their way to Cairo to support the Super Eagles in the encounter with South Africa.
Egyptians are crazy about national team football. Not like Nigerians. 1 million people voted for Salah in their last presidential election despite not being on ballot.
Anytime you meet an Egyptian in a foreign land and they know you are a Nigerian, they are most likely to start football discussion with you.
naijainstinct: So I wanted to fulfil my promise to pay N3 for every retweet if the e-protesters cross a benchmark of 1000 retweets.
I am perplexed and flabbergasted to find that the #DPR2016recruitmentInconclusive hashtag is yet to garner 3 retweets (I mean just three) after days of pushing forward the movement.
More disheartening is the fact that big media houses including @saharareporters @premiumtimesng @thecable and other prominent twitter influencers like @segalinks @omojuwa @ogundamisi etc were tagged in the e-protest.
I hate to do this but "DIDNT I WARN YOU?".
The so-called media houses and online influencers also sagaciously select their battles. They dont just jump at every allegation or protest. Commonsense is indeed uncommon.
Meanwhile I stand with @Ngwoike and others who 'know' and/or believe that a 2nd batch is very imminent. May God count us worthy to be among.
The guys you mentioned dont just jump into any cause.
What is your grudge with DPR?
DPR recruited, you went through same process like others, they chose the people that passed, and you are protesting that they should choose you?
You think Omojuwa, Sahara Reporters, Premium Times etc are fools that just jump into any Twitter campaign just because they are tagged?
Starboytwo: they didn't bully anything....infact I was surprised they were so ordinary....if them come with bully mentality I'm afraid they met the wrong team....
Even when Njie used lap to shove Aina aside and the guy tumbled like 3 times?!
Arsenalholic: I really wish Nigerian fans will tone down the bragging. Just allow the boys get to it and give it their best shot
One thing is crystal clear: this South African team is MILES better than the one we walloped in 2004. Plus our team is weaker compared to the SE team of 2004.
I was in awe watching the Bafana Bafana against Egypt. It was easily the most interesting game I'VE WATCHED at the tournament yet. They PRESSED Egypt and played some intricate, top-notch pass and move game. That was nice to see.
I hope our coach finally gets the memo and unleash our new golden boy, Chukwueze from the get-go. Just as Percy Tau will occupy Aina, I would like Chukwueze to occupy that Lanthi guy in RSA's "3" position.
I still prefer SA to Egypt. We sabi handle SA for competition.
darkelf: If I remember, he scored twice in that game
I just closed from extra mural class in SS3 on my way home to watch the game (around my secondary school staff quarters) when I heard shout of first goal.
Before then, SA had a good tournament in 96 and 98 when Nigeria did not feature and there was a debate on whether they would have gone that far if Nigeria featured and they began to see themselves as Nigeria's rivals.
We returned in 2000 and we met in QF (or was it semi sef?) and that game settled the matter.
Admittedly, SA had very good players in that generation.
Cameroun is Nigeria's traditional rival although Ghana also see themselves as Nigeria's rival. We don't pay attention to them like we do to Cameroun.
Ghanaians take games against Nigeria personal. Even friendlies. See the way Thomas Partey was playing in that game between ATletico Madrid and Nigeria's Super Eagles B. Every game against Nigeria is personal to Ghanaians.
