NYSC / Re: How Relevant Is National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) In This Dispensation? by jintujinta(m): 11:58am On Sep 18, 2008
Segzyjoe, i agree with most of your views but i also wish to state that a lot needs to be done in the area of accommodation and feeding in camp, then remuneration during service. Since most employers may not be able to provide accommodation for their corps members, the scheme should be able to provide initial allowance that will enable them to get accommodation or compel employers to give accommodation.

And i wonder how a corper can survive with N10,000 a month in Lagos. Yes, may be in other states but not Lagos.

I also think you should be part of the seminars for corpers, so you can share your ideas and opinion with the corpers and let them satrt seeing it in good faith. If possible, your organization can also visit final year students in universities to sensitize them to issues on NYSC.

but i am not sure that they have such program, don't think people that studied abroad are allowed into the program.

They are allowed into the programme, as long as your institution is recognized in Nigeria. The service year, in my time offered more than the parade and jamboree thing. There were manuals for the three major languages- Hausa, igbo and yoruba, so that people from other tribes could learn other languages. There were also seminars that speakers came to deliver.

It was an opportunity to really mix and taste life from other cultures' point of view and get to know things that were really required for starting life. I dont know if such seminars and workshop still exist on the NYSC scheme. But am sure the abroad graduates will also have one or two things to learn before getting into the main labour market in Nigeria. I believe it is a kind of "acclimatization" for them.

I think overhauling would be a good idea, and they should give excemption to those that studied out of Nigeria.

Well, if we all agree that the scheme helps people to mix with other cultures and peoples, helps to serve as a training school and gives opportunity for mistakes to be made and rectified before the real work and that it also provides "cheap" labour for some schools where such corpers teach, then i don't think anyone should be exempted.

That is where we see our true patriotism. Those who schooled abroad should also meet with their mates in camp, mingle with them to know their orientation and psychology because when they start working, they are the people the "abroad" graduates will still interact with. so let them start blending from the camp and service year.

The service year will also serve to re-orientate the "abroad" graduates who may have gone for too long about our values and culture which they may have forgotten.
NYSC / Re: How Relevant Is National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) In This Dispensation? by jintujinta(m): 7:14pm On Sep 15, 2008
While i may not be advocating total scrapping of the scheme, i just wonder if that is how it works in other places, especially America, where they have such schemes.

I believe government can put up some measure to just make it more appealing. In our days, we used to look forward to it. But these days, guys just want to pay someone to do it for them while they go look for a job.
NYSC / How Relevant Is National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) In This Dispensation? by jintujinta(m): 7:01pm On Sep 12, 2008
Well, this may not really fall into politics but i believe it's an issue in governance. I wonder what informed the policy for the NYSC scheme and i also wonder, is it still relevant in this dispensation?

Is the programme meant to provide cheap labour for employers?
Is it meant to give fresh graduates something to call "work experience" before entering the job market
Or is it just a compulsory service to the nation( without adding values to anyone) ?

Should this programme really continue and how can it be made more effective?

Hmm, i never got to write one. Ladies usually showed one another, so i was scared stiff that they would show my letters and make me their subject of discussion. i was so shy but i couldnt stand ridicule. So inever aloowed the thought of a letter. Ah, that will be an evidence of my toasting her and she would be able to say she " Nailed" me.

Politics / Re: Bakassi: Whose Fault Is It? by jintujinta(m): 6:56pm On Aug 14, 2008
In war, or desperate situations, man could make erroneous decisions that could back fire later. Bakkasi issue is one of them. The land was traded off for support from Cameroonians, so it was a decision made during desperation. No one should be blamed for that.

My concern is that the resident should be properly relocated so that life can continue well. they will sure lose their lands and some jobs because some professions are dependent on that land but i believe they can still be relocated and re established.

if there was no war, in the first place, there would be no need to trade out the land for help. So if we want to apportion blame, we will go farther back into history than just Gowon giving the land out.

This is not the time for blames, it is time to rescue what is left to be salvaged.
Education / Re: The Nigerian Teacher/Tutor And The Cane by jintujinta(m): 1:40pm On Jul 29, 2008
Well, i guess it depends on who is caning you and why he is doing that. My parents were teachers and they caned other people's children, so you can imagine that mine was double the dose they gave other people's children.

Other teachers also gave me double for every offense that i committed with other students. Atimes i wish i wasn't a student in my mother's school, school where she was teaching, that is.

I responded well to the chastisement/ caning of some teachers, the elderly ones, most of the time. But the young teachers sometimes acted like the trigger happy juveniles. They just wanted to beat you for everything you did wrong. There was no warning in their dictionary, there was no threat in it either. it was beating all through. I hated such. But some mothers among the teachers would only pull your ears after much threatening and kneeling down, etc but the message sank. Same with some other elderly male teachers.

In all, the Bible says that madness locks in the heart of the child and only the cane can cure him of the madness. Caning can be corrective and it can be destructive. Thank God i had parents that caned me and teachers that followed suit. They helped in shaping me up. I wouldn't frown if any teacher canes to chastise my child but if any canes to maim, i will sue for justice.
Religion / Re: I Don't Feel Like Going To Church: What's Wrong? by jintujinta(m): 12:10pm On Jul 09, 2008
People are excited about a place, when there is something to look forward to. So the question is what were you looking forward to in those days that you were excited to go to church, if you were ever excited to be there, that is?

Have you changed since you started going to church? People easily get bored when everything is stagnant. If you havent grown in the faith, if you are still where you were when you first knew HIM, then you are bound to be bored. You need a revival in your spirit. Even God said He despises lukewarmness. You either be hot or cold, no room for lukewarmness in the Lord.

If the Word you get in your church is not motivating, not inspiring , not nutritious enough to feed your soul, i guess you look for another place. if your church is telling you what you already know, you are bound to be bored, so look for a place where you can get refreshing interpretation of the Word.

I pray the Lord give, you the grace to rediscover the fire in you.
Politics / Re: Nigeria Without It's Vast Oil Reserves by jintujinta(m): 5:09pm On Jun 26, 2008
"Ki agbado too de, inkankan ni adiye nje" Before the discovery of maize chickens fed on something. Nigeria survived buoyantly with agriculture before the discovery of oil. So without oil, Nigeria will only open her eyes to new areas that are yet untapped. Do you know how many mineral resources we have in Kogi state?

Let us not deceive ourselves necessity is the mother of invention. Nigeria can survive without oil. When the oil ceases to be, we will shift to other resources. But it would have been better for us to develop those resources now so that the transition period from oil to those resources would not be too trying.

youngies:

There is no confusion of who rules the country, Yaradua to be exact. But who leads the country? Is Yaradua showing leadership? I'm sorry you are going to worry more if your only concern is that the country is losing millions of dollars. Soon there will be nothing to lose, because those "crooks" will be making it very difficult for the Nigerian State to continue stealing their oil.
What is the definition of a Freedom fighter? Where is the UN Freedom Fighting Chatter? Dude if you don't have anything meaningful to say, why not continue sipping your coffee than ridicule yourself in a public forum
Yaradua should roll in the tanks and the troopers and get them crushed? You are a neophite in conflict resolution and management.
You can only say this because you have managed to smuggle yourself into another man's country.

Then they will be busy stealing their own oil? We know that has been their problem now. That is why they don't want any amicable settlement. They don't want to pursue the way of peace. Has peace ever failed to resolve anything in life? Or you think what peace can not resolve it is violence that will resolve it? They only make matters worse with their wanton destruction, two wrongs don't make a right.

Religion / Re: The Church And Slavery by jintujinta(m): 3:02pm On Jun 25, 2008
You will only be a slave when you choose to. There is a supreme being that rules over all. He is spirit not physical and all must acknowlege His being and worship Him. If you now allow other people to dictate how you enjoy relationship with your maker, you may be enslaved to them but let those who know how to worship Him show you how to without you worshipping them rather than your maker.

If you dont acknowledge God and worship Him, you will worship man and images and become the worst slave.

Hello moderator,
I was surprised yesterday that you misrepresented my view in my post due to your "moderation". I wrote "Mo, " in my post and you changed it to "The great Prophet". i went back to change it to "Prophet M, but you changed it again to "The great Prophet" . So my question is this: is it wrong for me to mention that name "M, or to write it? Is that not what he was called when he was living? Or why did you call him "The great Prophet" for me? What if i do not see him as the great Prophet? Please, lets be objective in our moderation and not misrepresent people's views in our bid to moderate their posts.

Or has your system been programmed to change the name to that, so we know that it is the computer that is doing the moderation and not people?

Thanks.

Politics / Re: Yar’adua Declares War On Militants by jintujinta(m): 1:13pm On Jun 25, 2008
Attack is the best form of defence. This declaration of Yar adua ought to have come in the days of Obasanjo. Because the militants were not checked, they have graduated into kidnapping and all sorts of crimes to extort money and even torment innocent children. The earlier they are met with greater force, the better for Nigeria.

The truth is that you may have a good cause, but the way you pursue the cause may make a nonsense of your struggle. I believe that the militants have gone too far. If need be, let them be treated like the Odi community. There is a need to restore sanity in that region and only force could do that now. I only pray that the Nigerian soldiers be really ready for the task and do not under estimate the adversary. The operation should also be short and direct to the enemy camp so that not many civilians and innocent citizens will be affected.

The truth is that the militants' mouth has become too big, so even if you resolve the deprivation problem in the region they will become jobless and hungry. They can only thrive in chaos and turbulent situations where they will have opportunity to steal and extort money. They dont have the interest of the masses at heart.

Fight them to their last man and get rid of them!
Politics / The New Lagos by jintujinta(m): 12:33pm On Jun 25, 2008
Obviously Lagos state has been taking on a new look since the inception of this Governor Fashola's regime. Various responses have greeted the changes; which of the changes do you consider great and which ones does the government needs to improve upon and which ones are outrightly unnecessary? With this new thing evolving, how do you picture Lagos state in the next seven years?

fotodaddy:

ol boy, you are missing the point. The aim of the fine is not for people to pay it na!!! This is not revenue generation na!!!

The aim is for it to act as a deterent!!! So if you know that the concequencies are so severe, then perhaps that will make you think twice about breaking the law!!!

But since the law have you heard of any arrest? You see some things will just be too outrageous that people wont believe it. Even the law enforcement agent, am sure, are finding the law to be ridiculous. It's got to be realistic to be workable.

Don't you think that it would have sounded more realistic if N50k had been the penalty instead of N250 k?

Car Talk / Re: Traffic Violations In Lagos State Attract Ridiculous Fines by jintujinta(m): 12:03pm On Jun 18, 2008
It is laudable to have a law to check the excesses of the lagos drivers but it it also expedient to make such laws realistic. When setting goals, there is a need to make them challenging but achievable. I think same applies to laws or rules. Am afraid this law is not achievable.

How many kabukabu can afford 250,00? They will rather abandon the vehicle and go and buy anew one, afterall how much is a tokunboh car. Just add 150,000 to 250,000 and you will buy a tokunboh.

Besides, i think they have just made the policemen more greedy. It means they will now ask for more egunje. Bribe. Where they are collecting 1,000 for offences before, they will now demand 5,000. They also open room for vehicle confiscation when people cant afford the fine. That means some people will also have the opportunity to steal the confiscated vehicles, or sell it a t a ridiculous price to their relatives as the customs do these days.

That law is ridiculous, they should amend the fines, especially the ones that even bothers on the passengers. Or do they wan pSSENGERS TO BE JUMPING DOWN FROM THE VEHICLES WHEN THE DRIVERS MISBEHAVE? oR WONT THE DRIVER STOP BEFORE THEY WILL DISEMBARK?

Nairaland / General / Re: Street Party Ban In Lagos State by jintujinta(m): 2:57pm On Jun 09, 2008
It sounds like a welcome idea but can they really keep it? The fine is too low. I organize a party on the street and get fined N25,000, its okay. Afterall if i go to a hall, i pay that same amount to rent hall. The only bad thing is if the party is interrupted and every body sent packing.

In my opinion, i think the penalty is too mild. Stricter measure should be employed to stop street party.

Well, since you have to work, i think if you have to do it, pls do it. But in doing it, please mind how you cut your age o. So you wont be starting primary school at the age of two. The truth is that employers believe in bringing in new blood but i believe that age does not really matter. So do what you have to do to get your job afterall , all those players are doing it and becoming millionaires.
