Henry240: Yes, SAAF crashes are as a result of inadequate pilot training, technical incompetence and forced BEE quota system.
This is the 4 Nigerian A109 crash, 2 from the Navy and this is the 2nd one from the Air Force.
The crashes are not unusual, considering the thousands of sorties they carry out each year.
N/B, I never defended the A109. At least SAAF never crashed a C130 carrying 200+ passengers due to pilot error. |

SupremeCourt: I am not interested in trade of words between you guys, but its bound to happen with a dozen men posting war photos, they will also be at war with themselves once in a while and later adjust their hot heads back to cool mode. That is the issue of Nigerians vs South Africans, they will argue but settle after. Your comment is beyond my ability to reply, I am eager to see why you rate Nigerian military as ordinary average on continental level despite the photos we see here showing Nigeria is the most experienced African country in 21st century war. Curious to know if your opinion about South African armed forces versus Nigerian side is realistic, I pushed your comment to some military officers here in the FCT, anti-corruption cases are in court probing their spending from past governments, it is easy to ask some nice military boys private questions when its relaxing time.
Much as I have hammered into the Nigerians heads about slow payment and slow delivery of equipment, I have asked those who know better and I have further information:
(A) Only Nigeria has ability to attack an enemy with guiding missile air drones in Africa. (B) All remaining 10 mi35m will be delivered to NAF, completed by late months of 2018, draft budget provision covers it. Only Nigeria has guiding missile equipped helicopters in Africa excluding Mediterranean Arabs. They are purchased to destroy Boko Haram anti aircraft jeeps and any standard army that threatens Nigeria's territorial integrity. (C) The jf17 is testing AESAA radar in country of origin and offered to NAF, it is planned that some NAF delivery 2018-2020 will beat any air opponent in Africa excluding again Mediterranean Arabs. Budget covers it. (D) Nigerian navy lacks real warship but budget is drafted for one huge supply replenishment ship of Asian origin between 7,000 - 10,000 tonne with some real warship equipment. It will replenish all ships in maritime security deep off shore. (E) It is decided to equip NAF jf17 to counter surface any enemy warship in Nigerian deep off shore from long distance away. Budget for guide weapons is already fully provided and will be delivered 2017-2018. (F) Over 30 new aeroplanes: 5 ch drones, 12 mi35, 12 superb tuscano, 3 jf17 are ordered fully equipped to deal with any level of external aggression against Nigerian armed forces from any African country. That is how it is written in the documents submitted to justify military spending on budgets 2016, 2017, draft 2018.
Looking at the above and also looking at the current insurgency war experience that tested the Nigerian military more than any other African country, exposing weaknesses that have been fully corrected in a few years, I will say your opinion is wrong concerning Nigerian armed forces versus any opponent in Africa, excluding the Mediterranean Arabs as the officers say. No sensible country will over-estimate itself against a currently battle tested country. Almost every Nigerian soldier has tasted real war today, but almost every South African soldier has not seen war since he was born. Shooting practice at home is a thousand times easier than real shooting war. 1. South Africa fought is WW1,WW2,Korean war,Border War(1960-1988), these are real wars against real countries, not against a rebel group like boko harm......so how does Nigeria have more experience? a) You are not, refer to pic1 b) Again you are not refer to pic2 c) The JF17s Nigeria possibly are getting is the Block 2 variant, only the Block 3 will come with AESA radar..........There's not even a block 3 prototype yet d) You would still lack real warships, a Replenishment ship is not a warship! e) USA blocked the sale for Super Tucano and there has been no further news on your JF17s......Which should of arrived last year according to Henry 2) And? Training+Equipment beats experience......Look at what happened when American soldiers who never fought a war took on the battle hardened Iraqi forces during the Gulf war!! they pummeled them!!

ActivateKruger: I'm a believer of our own products HOWEVER I don't believe the Rooivalk would ever sell outside South Africa. See, buying a machine like the Rooivalk goes beyond "Wow this machine is great", there's plenty of politics to consider.... South Africa is an AFRICAN country so I don't think the world is prepared to invest the future of their air defence (even partially) to an African country. We're still not there. The Rooivalk would've won several export orders if it wasn't for Eurocopter(Airbus), nothing to do with us being African, and most importantly the Rooivalk isn't an Air defence system!! Also Finland, which if im not mistaken is a Western country and they invested in the Umkhonto SAM which they use for air defence.....So yes the West is and already has invested in South African air defence products. The whole world recognizes the Rooivalk as one of thee best AHs on the market.....But as you said politics play an even bigger role than the quality of the product! |

tdayof: I think I'll agree with you for the first time. I thought you said to put rooivalk in production over a dozen of order will be needed. Actually its 70 units.....Sounds a lot, but Denel seem very optimistic. SAAF would need a further 15-20 Rooivalk as stated by the Defence review, Nigeria also around 10-20 units, Egypt might also be a potential customer after the US delayed its Apache deliveries that might be another 40 units, Poland,India and Brazil are also interested. |

Nok234: as you can see in the majority of NAF videos it is always ISR planes that locate boko first, the only reason is endurance a plane like this one can stay more longer in the air, imagine that our ISR planes can fire ... this what gunship are about it is a ISR that fire with a 30 mm with some bombs etc Firstly all the ISR equipment you speak off have been replace by.....guess what.....guns hence the name gunship. Secondly Gunships when armed without BVR missiles , rely on visual target acquisition, which means it has to fly really low like....7000ft low, thus if its sunny it would make one massive target. Thus for obvious reasons a isr aircraft can never be a gunship...its basically the opposite of each other. A Gunship preforms the exact same role as an Attack/ helicopter-gunship....Close Air-support. Much rather invest in 5 Rooivalk than 1 gunship. Added benefit you could actually use the Rooivalk in day time without being shot down. Now I'm not saying gunships are not useful...they are in fact awesome pieces of hardware if used correctly, and the amount of lead that could be laid down by one of those beasts like the Ac130 is simply mind boggling ....but are ridiculously expensive, and simply not affordable in Nigeria's case, also when operating them in day time you would also need escorts to protect them! |

Iblawi1: Rooivalk didn't get buyers because South African Air Force ordered just 11 or 12. It will really be difficult to get others to buy if you are not ready to buy minimum of 40.
Nigeria can join the project in the future when economy bounces back(hopefully next year) and we might need more helicopters with time but Merlin missile i doubt we would even think of it at this stage. We only bought 12 because that's all we could afford, remember SAAF also funded the entire R&d which acquaints to $40 mil per Aircraft. Apparently there are quite a number of countries interested in the Rooivalk mk2 including SAAF, but to open the production line a minimum of 70 units have to be ordered to make it economically feasable for Denel and more affordable for potential customers. Also i agree with regards to the marlin missile |
Foreign Affairs › Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by jl115: 1:47pm On Nov 22, 2016 |
TERAZA: Tell me why cant Nigeria hop in on SA's Marlin BVR missile development, as it would create a lot of skills in Nigeria and free it up from importing such systems.
The Marlin will be both a 5th gen BVR missile and a medium SAM system. Nigeria just don't have the technological advancement to add any benefit to the Marlin project at all at this moment...and I say this with all due respect. It will be another A-Darter saga.....all Brazil did was finance the A-Darter developmen, technically they added fokol, the physical development was done by SA alone, and thanks to their fvck up economy they might not even order any missiles in the near future....luckily SAAF has ordered the A-Darter and deliveries will commence at the end of next year. Also the Nigerian economy is in an even worse place than ours, so I doubt they would even be able to afford financing the Marlin development! But what I'm hopeful for is a Nigerian-South African Rooivalk mk2 collaboration in the future. |
