Rohr: Libya Will Be Tougher In Sfax, But Eagles Are Hungry For Another Win October 15, 2018 10:57 pm https://y7r7y5g7.stackpathcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/IMG_20181011_56585-650x696.jpg By Adeboye Amosu: Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr, believes his team will face a difficult battle against the Mediterranean Knights of Libya in Tuesday’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture at the Stade Taïeb Mhiri, Sfax, but assures his charges are well motivated to beat their opponent, Completesportsnigeria.com reports. Rohr’s charges thrashed the North Africans 4-0 at the Akwa Ibom International Stadium, Uyo on Saturday with Odion Ighalo grabbing a hat-trick and Samuel Kalu netting the other goal for the West Africans. The win improved the Super Eagles’ chances of making a return to Africa’s biggest soccer competition after failing to qualify for the last two editions. The Libyans made the Super Eagles work hard for their victory despite the scoreline and created two goal-scoring chances in the first half. And Rohr expects their opponent to prove a nut to crack in the encounter despite the emphatic victory recorded against them in Uyo. “Tomorrow’s game will be tougher than the last one. It’s always difficult to play the same team twice in three days and win both games, but we’re just as motivated and hungry for victory as we were on Saturday,” Rohr stated in a Tweet poster on Super Eagles’ Twitter handle on Monday evening. —CSN |

Dean Smith signed former Steve Bruce favourite Moses Odubajo this summer https://tbrfootball-com.cdn.ampproject.org/i/s/tbrfootball.com/static/uploads/2018/10/GettyImages-1044738964.jpg Dean Smith signed former Steve Bruce favourite Moses Odubajo this summer BRENTFORD, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 02: Maxime Colin of Birmingham City battles with Moses Odubajo of Brentford during the Sky Bet Championship match between Brentford and Birmingham City at Griffin Park on October 2, 2018 in Brentford, England. (Photo by Bryn Lennon/Getty Images) Aston Villa have appointed Dean Smith as their new manager. The 47-year-old, a lifelong Villa fan, has left his role at Brentford in order to take the job with John Terry his assistant. It comes after Aston Villa sacked Steve Bruce. The club had suffered a poor start to the season and Bruce’s position among the fanbase at Aston Villa had become untenable. Smith will now be tasked with taking the club toward a promotion push after the international break. This summer, Smith interestingly signed a player that Bruce is very fond of. Moses Odubajo spent two seasons playing under Bruce at Hull CIty. The former Villa boss snapped him up for a reported £3.5 million in August 2015 from Brentford. He went on to be the club’s starting right-back as Bruce guided the Tigers to promotion from the Championship in 2015-16 Bruce left soon after due a disagreement with the club’s board. Odubajo had an even worse summer. He suffered a dislocated kneecap and ligament damage during the 2016 pre-season and spent most of the next two years on the sidelines. This summer, he left Hull at the end of his contract to continue his career elsewhere. In fact, Bruce was linked with bringing him to Aston Villa in a reunion, as reported by the Hull Daily Mail. But Odubajo headed back to Brentford, with Smith signing him to a one-year deal with the option of an extension. He returned to action in September but only played three games for Smith before he decided to take the role at Aston Villa. Now, Smith is at Aston Villa, it will be interesting to see if Odubajo to Villa Park rumours materialise yet again. —tbrFootball |

NGR 4-0 LBY: Five Hot Talking Points 1. Ighalo back with the goods: Just as pressure keeps mounting on the Changchun Yatai forward anytime he's called up to the national team, he made good of the occasion against Libya. He scored a fantastic hat-trick, becoming the first Nigerian to do so since Nnamdi Oduamadi in 2013. It might now be four goals in his last two appearances for the Super Eagles, but in truth, Ighalo was largely poor on the day, looking for needless penalties when he should have scored and lacking composure in front of goal. 2. The Iwobi show: It hardly needs to be emphasised that the Arsenal star is at his best whenever he plays the number 10 role. That was how Rohr employed him against the Mediterranean Knights in Uyo, and he proved to be the real deal with his passing always initiating attacking moves. One of which resulted in an Ighalo goal and another, almost a maiden goal for left full-back Jamilu Collins. It is the hope now that Rohr realises that there is no one better suited for that role than Iwobi. 3. Kalu is still hot: The Bordeaux man enjoyed a fine debut against a lowly Seychelles side, but this tie against Libya was always going to be a big test. It proved to be the case, as he was found wanting all game, needlessly aiming for goal when he should have passed to a teammate. Fans grew uneasy as he continued to feature on the pitch, but the former Gent winger wrapped up the evening with a curling shot from outside the 18-yard area that took viewers off their seats. 4. Bad Uyo pitch: The game was initially billed to be played in Kaduna, but poor pitch conditions meant it was moved to Uyo. It proved to be little improvement, with the playing surface an eyesore to spectators. Although the Godswill Akpabio Stadium has been the permanent home of the Super Eagles for quite a while now, the turf keeps deteriorating due to poor maintenance. It might not be worthy to be played on again if standards don't improve. 5. Poor refereeing: Ighalo might have been the centre of attraction in Uyo, but it's hard to leave out centre referee Jean-Jacques Ndala Ngambo, who made a number questionable decisions especially in not awarding the Libyans what appeared to be a couple of clear-cut penalties, which irked the North Africans. Perhaps if he hadn't erred, Nigeria wouldn't have enjoyed such a comfortable victory, and the 1982 Afcon champions will be hoping to make amends in the return leg. —goal |

Rohr on Kalu and VicMo: ''He is playing better and better. He did very well. Playing in Nigeria for the first time in an important match like this he did well. I saw him play for Bordeaux and he’s was very good. ''There’s little more work for him to do in replacing Victor Moses. The door is still open for him to come back . If he’s fit, why not. Victor loves his fatherland that I know.'' Source: ANS |

Nigeria's comprehensive win over Libya not perfect - Gernot Rohr Tolu Olasoji Deputy Editor Nigeria 21:15 Despite thumping Libya 4-0 in Saturday's 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifiers, Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr insists that his team were less perfect. An early goal from Odion Ighalo from the penalty spot put the Super Eagles ahead but the Mediterranean Knights tested their resilience as they held on to their one-goal lead into the first-half break. Rohr's men ran rampage after the interval with Ighalo getting two more goals before Samuel Kalu wrapped up the victory with a sumptuous debut effort. But the German handler was wary of the team's deficiencies which he said must be corrected before the second leg of the fixture in three days time. “This result does not mean we had a perfect game today,” Rohr said after the game. “We had problems defensively especially in the first half and before we play Libya again in three days, we must improve on our weak areas.” The win saw Nigeria move into the second spot [six points] in Group E standings with South Africa at the summit after a resounding 6-0 victory over Seychelles. And Libya now occupy the third spot in the log. —goal |
