Business › How Stable Is The Naira Vs Dollar by jpphilips(op): 2:43pm On Dec 08, 2009
how stable is the naira?
what basic economic parameter defines it's stability especially when compared with the dollar?
Are there sometimes of the year when normal economic activities tend to push it up or down?
when is the demand for the dollars highest and vice versa?

i will appreciate good responses

I really appreciate the objective analysis by most of those that have commented. I used to drive a 2002 Toyota Corolla but for the past 10 months, i have been driving a brand new 2008 Kia Cerato and i have not had any regrets! It has simply been wonderful! Its the economic situation that is making us to be crazy about Tokunbos. A friend mine who drives a 2008 Toyota Corolla drove my car for a few hours and commented "this car makes perfect sense". A tokunbo car SHOULD not/CANNOT be compared to a brand new. Its like comparing sleep and , !

i just think your friend was speaking ironically

If i get you correctly, you're saying that servicing your car should be covered by the warranty? Dude!

yes,
something like that, i am glad you got my point though your reference abinitio is quite noted,

if you have parts in your vehicle that i must change say every two or three months(or after covering a said mileage)
how then do you expect me to beat my chest and say my CAR has a warranty cover,
i quite understand that these car manufacturers are businessmen but sometimes their modus operand i are over flogged by consumers

common sense tells me that if you cant make an oil filter that can stand 5,000 miles, it is unlikely that you can make Air filter that can stand 10yrs
then if my warranty covers air filter for 1yr, i expect same for oil filter.

all i can say is that kia cerato and Toyota camry are not mates in any ramification
i enjoyed the furore for a while but at a point, i got confused at the bone of contention,
is it about comparing the companies that made them or about the product or about the age?
i seem a little lost though i can try and force myself out of that imbroglio

at poster,

if i am not mistaken, is the cerato not the flag carrier for the Kia's 1.6l engines?
how come you are juxtaposing it with a camry? do a little research yourself
about Age, are you looking at the wears and tears accrued with time or are you looking at the economic side of it.

if a brand new kia cerato(1.6l) sells for >2m like someone said above,
and i know that a 2.4l camry of 2006 sells for almost same, common sense tells me to find out whether or not the camry has fault. if it doesn't
shikena!! i will definitely go for the camry
reason is because, the camry has more features,in terms of entertainment, comfort and safety which the cerato may not have
or you want to talk about space and number of passengers, or you want me to compromise 6cd changer for one because its brand new? powerful engine performance for a drag?
four air bags sometimes 6 for just 2? the count is endless

when i look at those korea cars and their plastic interiors i don't know what i think

i heard pple talk abt fuel efficiency, for christ sake, do u expect a 1.1l picanto to consume same with a 3.5l camry?

if u want to make good comparisons then fetch a toyota Echo and compare with the Kia Rio

the only point i want to make is that cars are graded in terms of their engine capacity and features,

about Age; a 2yr old camry made with steel will always be better than a brand new Kia made with Iron (not literary though, but a little knowledge of strength of materials will help)
another thing to consider is this

a 2.5m cerato of 2009 will worth what in 2011 case you want to sell it off?
and ask urself wot an 06/07 camry will worth come 2011

let me not remind you that an 11yr old camry still sells for btw 1.1m to 1.250m in the fairly used  market depending on the options and grade,

my Advice if you are brand new crazy;

buy a lower brand new toyota or honda, the likes of
Yaris, city,Avenza,Echo etc than aspiring for a 4.5m camry
you might be suprised the price difference wont be much with your dear cerato, also stay away from these south Africa brand news in Nigeria, they are as good as those korea junks

outside these

get your self a three or two years fairly used with good record and low mileage

the choice is yours

That's strange because warranties should normally cover ALL mechanical faults. I've activated a warranty before and even though the staff were making funny statements about paying some stuffs, I stood my ground and paid nothing.
Well, i guess you activated that waranty on electronics or something else not really cars
the last time i checked, hyundai motors in Naija still charges about 5k plus for first servicing which includes; change of oil and filter
NB for a brand new car under warranty
Family › Re: Would You Quit Your Job If Hubby Insists? by jpphilips(m): 3:38pm On Nov 17, 2009
Yinka is a banker while his wife, Funsho, is a journalist. By virtue of their jobs, the two of them close late . They’ve been married happily for two years before trouble reared its head in their home. That was when the children started coming. Yinka suddenly realized that his wife must come back home early to take care of their two children as their housemaid has given notice of her leaving at the end of the month.

The pressure is on Funsho at home and her office as her editor is always on her neck to deliver. Now the bombshell Yinka wants her to quit her lucrative job, and by implication, her budding career to take care of her children. This is a job that took her several years of job-hunting to secure. She was not sure the job would be waiting for her when she decides to return. She is at a crossroads.

Many men are asking their wives to quit their jobs to take care of the children and for other reasons that range from perceived infidelity at the office and health grounds. If you were in this situation, what would you choose? Your home or your job?

Fellow Nairalanders, what's your view on this? Meanwhile here is what a number of wives interviewed had to say on this. Excerpts:

GBEMI .A
I don’t think any man can say that without a cause, no. For a man to tell me or his wife to quit her job means he must be suspecting foul play. It is only when a woman cheats on her husband and the husband on the other hand knows that he can advise her to quit her job and become a full time housewife, or on health grounds, or whether to be able to give more attention to her children.
If nothing of these happened, it means the man is trying to shoulder the entire burden in the home, and I think it is not advisable for such a woman to quit her job. The man might die at anytime and what would happen after his demise? The family will have to start from the scratch.

MRS. FRIDAY
It depends on his reasons. If his reasons are not selfish, I think I would accept it.
First, I think the reasons which could make me quit my job will have to be poor health and demands of my family. I think there is a particular stage in our female children’s lives, especially when they are getting matured in life that requires attention.
Secondly, for me to quit my job, I think my husband should be financially strong to cater for the family, because when the wife stops working, the entire burden rests on the man alone and sometimes it could be too heavy on him. That is why it is good for the wife to also be supportive in terms of finance.

GOLD
It is not always advisable for a woman to quit her job in order to be a full time housewife, because the burden of running the home will be one sided. In other words, it will not be balanced and this of course, would be too much on the man.
Challenges don’t knock on your doors, they come when you least expect. If the husband alone should shoulder the burden, you can guess what would happen.
For example, if the man suddenly dies and the wife does not work, how do you think the wife will survive? No matter the investment the husband had before he died, if nothing is done to service a car, what happens to the car? It will break down.
There is no successful man that sleeps at home and expects a great boom in his wealth or assets. So, a family that would survive the test of time should be up and doing.
The wife should necessarily not be a civil servant, no. She could have a shop in front of the house or supply goods to people to eke a living.

MRS. CONSTANCE NWOKE
First, I would say no. I would first explain to him why I wouldn’t quit my job. Although, sometimes it is good to stay at home and look after the children.
I think if my work does not take more of my time… if perhaps it is the type that is between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., well, I think there is no need quitting the job. But if it is one that keeps me out late, then, I have no alternative than to quit.
One important thing is that my neighbours could start gossiping that I don’t work. They would start calling me names and say that you are the lazy type, you are not considerate, and that you are milking your husband dry .

COMFORT O.
I think I know that women, no matter their educational qualifications, end up in the kitchen. Indirectly, the woman would definitely cook or serve her husband food, it does not mean she will forever remain in the kitchen or sleeping in the kitchen. Women who value their homes would not want their husbands snatched from them.
If I have a good job that can supplement my husband’s income, I don’t think there should be any reason to quit.
Although some men tell their wives to quit their jobs out of selfishness, this applies to the jealous men who would always monitor their wives everywhere they go, read her text messages and would always want to know their callers.
But I can say that any man who does that is prone to hypertension and nothing more. Nothing positive comes out of such things; they are the types of men who tell their wives to quit their jobs without substantial reason(s).
Every man should, at least appreciate his wife’s efforts to complement his efforts in the family. For me, I don’t think it is possible because I cannot allow my certificates to be a waste.

MRS. ADIGUN
I don’t think I would quit irrespective of what his reasons could be.
One, he should have thought of what would be beneficial to both of us, not his own interest alone.
If he is considerate enough, I think he should have known that it is good to always balance an equation. It is like a car that has three tyres; there is no way it would be balanced on the road.
No matter how rich a man could be, he should allow his wife to have something to support the family with. There are always times people run out of cash. Sometimes, our husbands are not paid early enough. In that case, it is the wife that supports the family pending the time the man is paid.We have seen homes where the wife is the breadwinner because the husband’s take home is nothing to talk about. Amidst this, there is understanding and joy.
So tell me, if such woman does not work, what would happen to the family?

MRS. BUKKY AJOSE
I won’t do that for any reason. God forbid! If I decide to take to his advice, what happens if, God forbids, he dies suddenly? Where would I get money to cater for the family? There are in-laws who send their daughters-in-law packing immediately after the death of their son. They would not allow her take anything out of the house, not minding the children their son had before he died. Some of them send both the children and their mother packing.
So, when my husband tells me to quit my job and become a full-time housewife, what would become of me and my responsibilities to the family? What would I be doing sitting at home all day?

MRS. AINA SANYAOLU
I don’t think it is possible for my husband to tell me to quit my job because when men need something from a woman they start pretending and immediately they get it, they would change their attitude towards you. God forbid, if he dies, and does not have anything on ground to cater for the family, where would I run to?
As a mother and a good wife, there are things one should do for the children, for example, assisting in terms of finances, but what happens when you suddenly stop working?

i think Mrs Constance Nwoke does not even know why she wakes up by six o'clock and comes back by seven pm as the case maybe.
did u see the highlighted texts above? these pretentious social criminals all contribute to their family upkeep, may i ask by what percentage?
because the last time i checked 90% of Nigerian women spend all their income on clothes, they are the reason why Nolly wood producers sell off those embarrassment they call movies and Ebony magazine on the other hand.

when you say contribute, i look at a reasonable split as the case may be. the only 10% are the ones that are left with no option, cos the the hubby aint earning well,
pay their hubby's well, they join the 90%

bottom line is, if i work and take care of the family basics and my wife leaves home for eternity only to have only shoes, clothes and jewelries to show for it while the children rots
i dont think that farce of a job is worth it
lest i forget, Madam Re branding that has meandered through political heights, did you hear that the house in her village was built by her or perhaps she couldn't afford it?

Politics › Re: MEND Say No More Ceasefire: by jpphilips(m): 9:41am On Nov 03, 2009
There is nothing inherently wrong with one Nigeria.

But there is everything wrong with one Nigeria when large tracts of the Southern population are feeling increasing alienated and marginalised.
The ND problem revolves around our federal structure. Rather than discuss the ND problem with MEND, who have gotten together a team of World class representatives (including Akhigbe and Soyinka), the FG has gone down the wrong path of threats, bribery (amnesty) and false propaganda.
We are told to blame our "leaders", as if we even know how FG implants like Ibori ever became our "leaders" (someone please tell me when we "voted" fairly). Aside from MEND and its ethnic affiliates, the ND has no voice.

We all love the idealistic one Nigeria concept, but very man, woman and child from the ND is deeply upset and there is no outlet. The Nigerian mentality is to push the smaller guy about, but anybody who knows the ND knows that folk here simply don't get pushed about; unlike in some regions, you can't threaten someone "I will slap you" if you aren't immediately ready and capable of carrying it out; we just don't think in that way and that is where the rest of the country gets this crisis so wrong. We are really tired and pushed to the wall. All the while, our people are killed like mere cockroaches by those who claim to be "fellow Nigerians", all for oil that does not serve either Nigeria or the ND; it is all stolen by ex-generals and the ruling class.

The way things are going, at some point the ND will form an army; it is beginning to look more definite with each passing day. All that needs doing, is stop Warri and PH functioning and the country will cease to function; then you can say bye bye to Nigeria.

The clock is ticking.

Romance › Re: Between Virginity And Manners In Chosing A Wife by jpphilips(m): 12:07pm On Sep 01, 2009
This thread makes me laugh;

it reminds me of a friend i met sometime in Nigeria, this guy told me that where he comes from in Anambra State, there is this ritual that the Men use their semen to make money, the ritual is a spiritual dimension targeted at using the semen as a conduit to get to generations unborn, because its spiritual, when eventually they get married, the doctors cant really see anything, all the tests will prove them to be okay, but in the end the family remains childless,

at the end of our meeting, i pondered over his story but never thought that a reasonable girl will fall for such crap until i remembered the ''virgins''

young man, u have so much sentimental attachment with this girl not becos you love her but u re thrilled with the fact that at her age, she is still a virgin dats y it seems so much a big deal to you,

Let me ask you another question, have you ever dis virgined a girl in your lifetime?
of course i can guess your answer, when u were stuck with her for 11yrs only God knows if u aint a virgin your self,

the day u will disvirgin a girl then you will understand y pple here tell u its all hype, psychologically, u re entering dat marriage with high expectations and trust me u will surely be disappointed,

let us get down to common sense; these are girls that are created with equal number of hormones like their counterparts, coexist in the same society, the next question is y re they not like the other girls?

second question; can i cope with the reason y they re who they are?

do you think it is easy for them as the weaker vessels to retain their virginity till such age while we the stronger in most cases cannot retain, it wont be out of place to say that they have a stronger counter force to say NO irrespective of the circumstance, which ever it is
i bet you my friend you cant cope,

in my opinion, those girls re not Normal, they re not your everyday girls, they are not Adventurous, dont mind them when they say, if we get married, we will have lots of sex
then ask her what happened to the restraining force that kept her for 28yrs, mere marriage cant remove that, ie when you hear experienced people tell you they re never good in bed even in marriage
reason;
they are not adventurous and they are not thrilled by what is new, the only reason she will have sex with you even in marriage is procreation any thing outside that you re on your own, its a psychological issue

During my early years, i was opportune to do a practice on clinical psychology and my patients then were one of a kind, at a point i wanted to write a book about a psychological disease called virginity

during one of my sessions, there was this couple that the wife always denies him sex, or sometimes would want to trade it for favors, so when they told me their story, i tried counseling them, but i realized something, the lady in question has something she thinks abt herself

outside the irrational things she says like ''if u wanna send me packing then keep me the way i was when u married me''
words like '' you think im like any other girl you pick on the road'' and a lot of bullish stuffs that i perceived is making her think she is superior to her husband because of her sexual canopy

i decided to take them on separate sessions to my greatest chagrin i realized the lady in question is a Narcissist, though i nearly misconstrued it with pride
it was at this verge that i asked the question and she said of course YES with so much pride in her eyes

then i ran a scan through my mind and found out that the force behind that social anomaly is Narcissism and phobia.

then i understood why someone will want to trade her sexual disposition.
dats wen you hear words like

''no sex before marriage''

psychologically speaking,

she sees it that she is coming with a big stuff as such, you should make a big move to earn it.and the contest continues even after marriage, in the end you, will definitely loose control of your home to cheap sexual blackmail for peace to reign.
or she is so scared that she cant compromise if the union is not justified meaning; she is trading her virginity for marriage,

before you marry this girl, ask your self the ff questions

CAN I COPE WITH EXTREME NARCISSISM?

CAN I COPE WITH HER SEX PHOBIA?

cos those are the two main reasons why the are still virgins at 28 and make no mistakes, these reasons never disappear even in marriage, if you ask me, u seem like someone who cares about sex, without mincing words, she aint your type, look else where,

Virginity is just a physical state that u wont know when it disappears on your first nite(ie if she will let you) grin grin its all about societal perception, just the same way the white girls cry at Michael jackson's concert and in Africa they think well, he is a good dancer Making his money grin grin

A woman's worth is not rated under her sexual canopy, its just that our today's women have run out of ideas to add value to themselves other than a piece of meat with tension stress less than 1.00102nm grin grin what a shame we bought the trend,

i have a million and one instances to make you understand that you are about to make a mistake of your life,

make no mistakes again, never you think that a virgin in marriage will never cheat, cheating has no connection with marriage whatsoever, ask your self, the girls that cheat, were they not once virgins? in other words, if you marry her, dis virgin her and give her reasons to cheat, she is up on it, the same way you can marry a non virgin, gives her reason to stay and she sticks with you.

My advise; the only virgin that is worthy of marriage are the ones that never told you they are virgins in the first place,or make assertions that insinuates it but somehow, they were able to wade you off sex for personal reasons, some could be upbringing some could be religion in this case, u will see for yourself that she has a great deal of respect for God in all ramifications not only on sexual matters(cos she can as well use it as a front), any thing short my dear, ''BAGGAGE AT OWNERS RISK''

seems the thread is too long to accommodate my post, but while going through others i came up with this ;

Why would a sensible man want to marry a childish fantasizing wife at her age?
why would a man derive fulfillment from someone living in some Disney land?
why would a man wish to associate by any means with someone with Hollywood mentality?
You know one funny thing about BIG MEN PIKIN? they always have a lot of growing up to do even @ old age. though i feel it is not your friend but you, but in anycase

you/your friend has a lot of growing up to do

so as she prepares to become a married lady, she has not made contact with reality, how does the 24k gold guarantee her happiness in that marriage, material things re mostly appreciated when it comes as a gift, if she scores high in the marriage, the guy may be so thrilled to even give her more.

anyways
why pay more to marry a cartoon watching wife when i know the same religion that permits her to make demands permits me to marry more women. grin grin

@ rasputtin

since you have decided to baptize your leaders collaborators and that justifies their freedom,
common sense (though not common these days) tells me that is is easier to kidnap Peter odili to pay 50bn naira Ransom and use it to complete the dualization of east -west Road to challenging the federal government to a dual that will end with the formation of JTF.

@ jomogbomo2

you still have time to educate him on those jamb figures

i felt sorry for him when i saw that part of his post perhaps he doesn't know that every UME center in Diobu and Mile one has toll gates and he forgot in a hurry that JAMB officials pay community settlement before invigilation.

the likes of beaf, rasputtin and co are very far away from the delta

You left the Odilis, the iboris and co and went to Kidnap the Briggs, sometimes i wonder the Academic Qualifications of these so called MEND

do they present CV's at all during recruitment? grin grin just thinking aloud

This is all claptrap. I have given several reasons why Odili and them cannot be touched at this stage. The last time anyone tried to go against Odili, we saw what happened in Okrika. Odili simply purchased greater firepower. Infact someone like Odili can turn the militants who carry out operations on behalf of MEND against themselves.
well, well, well, i never knew the Bravado of the niger Deltans can turn out so comical grin grin grin grin i cant help laughing
he cannot be touched because, ''he can turn the militants against themselves''(according to you)
as such he deserves a Niger Delta pardon grin grin grin grin grin
and you call this sham Revolution?
SPDC,Chevron,Mobil, Agip, now deserves to suffer abi, the Foreigners etc

please Explain to the house the aims and objectives of the so called Niger Delta Struggle? so we can form a list of people that will be touched and vice versa
