Culture › Re: Is Badmus A Yoruba Name? by JuanDeDios(op): 11:25am On Nov 20, 2014
2prexios:
Coker, Cole and Dasilva are all Saro names.

These names are from southern America (Brazil) brought back by Sierra-Leonian-Yorubas returning (to Lagos and Abeokuta) after the abolition of slave trade.

The Cokers are to be found among the Egbas. One of the patriarch of the Coker family was an Islamic scholar among the Egbas in the 19th century or so.

Another reputable Saro in Ogun state with colonial authority was Seriki Abass.

A story around that name (coker) is this:

Coker and another Yoruba scholar were vying to become chief imam of Egba or so.

So it is said that Coker ask if the man is truly an Egba man going by the apparent Ibadan/Oyo tribal mark on his cheeks?

His contender ask him in return to explain if the name Coker is anyway traceable to a Yoruba root.

that's what I've learn somewhere.
Thank you.

I knew names like Smith, Williams, Da Costa, Da Silva, Cole, etc., were mostly brought in by returnee slaves and are English and Portuguese names. Coker puzzled me because it doesn't sound Potoki and I have never heard of a non-Yoruba person who bears it. If anybody knows the name's origin I'd appreciate it. Is it English or Portuguese or Dutch or Indonesian?

what kinds of questions are these? huh

I would have thought that was obvious. Ok, let me explain it for you.

Different languages take different tones and these names don't sound Yoruba. They don't even sound Niger-Congo. In fact, they sound English. Yet it appears only Yoruba people are seen or heard to bear them. Hence I'm wondering if they're Yoruba names or not. Thank you.

So Badmus is from Gbadamosi. Interesting. Sounds like pure Anglicisation. I wonder if them old folks in the villages will recognise it.

Can you help me with this one? Coker - is it a Yoruba name? Thank you.

@Op,I wish your mum soonest recovery. On a different note, what you saw was not peculiar to the hospital you mentioned but cuts across all the tertiary health institutions across the nation. This is what the NMA has been fighting to stem, the sorry state of our health institutions.Alas doctors were called different derogatory names. The citizens of this country have to stand up and do something fast otherwise things will get worse.
This may be misleading. While public hospitals are generally not in good shape, this one takes the cup. I was at LASUTH (aka Ikeja General Hospital) last week for voluntary HIV testing. I spent exactly forty minutes in the premises before leaving with my result. Granted, the VCT is paid for by the US government, but most of the facilities used belong to LASUTH. When I went there for my eye there was a lot of time wasting but all these I hear about paying to sh#t, paying to fuel generator, falling roofs and weed overgrowing sitting areas are entirely new. Ogun State should sit up.

Morally speaking, what is the difference between CJTF and BH if Pow's head are to be severed to prove a point. Rather, BH prisoners could be paraded in public and summary secret execution carried out. Beheading is primitive and barbaric.
Morally speaking - and legally speaking - your recommendation is even more insidious. When you start letting security agents get away with secret executions you're in Stalin's Russia and nobody is safe.

Should this not be in place FIRST before making any attempt to ban okadas? Why put the cart before the horse? In fact, will okadas not die a natural death (without the need for an outright ban) if the various state governments implement "intelligent" and efficient transport systems?
Exactly.

In my view the widespread use of motorcycles for commercial public transportation is neither good nor desirable. But banning okada in the face of the present realities makes no sense. Fashola and the other copy-cat governors were simply insensitive. In a sane system he would complete his “blue line” and put in place functional bus and taxi systems first. I guess everyone wants to be “action governor” before anything else. Oshiomhole even banned tricycles! I’ve seen list of achievements reeled out by governors and many of them actually list the banning of okada as a prominent achievement.

I'm just trying to show you the obvious bias in BBC reportage, not denying the "professional" Ebola scourge reporting.
There is no bias. Anyway I don't expect someone who thinks it's the media's remit to praise his country and who mistakes a reportage of the WHO's certification of Nigeria followed by a detailed story on Nigeria's success against Ebola for praise to understand what professional news reporting is all about.

While they dilly dally because they haven't a single how to stop Boko Haram they engage in this free for all Shenanigans to deceive the foolish Nigerian multitude.

Imagine president Barack Obama negotiating a cease fire with Taliban, Al-Queda, Islamic Jihad, ISIS and co.
Exactly.

Even where you negotiate like the Gaza situation, once Hamas broke the ceasefire by firing a single shot that did not injure a fly, there was an immediate response. Here Nigerians are being beheaded while Badeh drinks champagn in his office celebrating a "ceasefire" and the military is
saying they will not go on the offensive but will retaliate if fired upon. In a serious country Badeh would be in serious trouble by now.

It would appear that the BH guys simply went out to ridicule the military and Badeh fell for it. Shame.

Smh
Sorry, did I misread the thread? It's about Boko Haram and not Ebola, and so your post is apt and I should respond to it, right?
Politics › Re: B B C Finally Praises Nigeria For Defeating Ebola Virus by JuanDeDios: 8:15am On Oct 20, 2014
The BBC has reported the whole Ebola outbreak professionally like a good media outfit should. I don't know when praising anyone became a part of their remit or why anyone would feel his country needs their praise.

Is it safe to buy used phones? What are my options?

1. I need a big screen phone so I can read on the go.

3. I don't want a Tecno.
4. My budget is small.

What can I do? What are my options?

I don't know a lot about phones.

It is irresponsible for the Nigerian government to tax citizens, only to waste the money on themselves and their cronies. This is highly unacceptable.
Fair point.

But tax defaulters have no moral high ground since every one benefits from government amenities like roads (god and bad), subsidized hospitals and cheap university education - it is just that we don't benefit as much as we should. In any case, that is not the point Pastor Oyedepo is making. He wants special treatment because (1) He helps the poor (2) He's working for God (3) He built his own power installations and boreholes. His argument doesn't stand up.

No, not quite yet. I suggest you look at the criteria used for this ranking, try to understand it, and then consider all the variables. China is still far far behind the US. One can write a whole book on that.
