overhypedsteve: omo men. I grew up seeing my dad, stamp a confidential watermark on most of his documents, and sometimes this docs are just simple official docs and do not matter much, but they are attended to with the utmost confidentiality, even when they where sent to Israel for a course back in 1998, all we knew was that dad went for holy pilgrimage. I ve never found a single piece of official documentation in his room even after he retired, they are either burnt when not needed or kept in the bank. But here we are, seeing such a seriously confidential info that holds the key to achieving our national security agenda being displayed on the internet, all in the name of opposition.
It has nothing to do with opposition. You people don't get it.

ntyce: How did the military get too complacent to release such sensitive info?
Sahara Reporters ain't no NTA.
Its mission is to report news and get traffic same as any major news corp.
The onus is for the source to ensure safety of such info.
Ask any good journalist, the goal is always to be the first to break the news, which SH is very good at.
What the govt needs to do is to get the mole that leaks such info and punish such accordingly.
But SH has done nothing wrong.
Wikileaks did same and were applauded outside of the USA.
Thank you. People don't get it.

Education › Re: Any Valid Arguments For The "My Discipline Is More Difficult Than Yours" Issue by JuanDeDios: 8:31am On Sep 11, 2014
This touches on the matter of multiple intelligences. (See the theory of multiple intelligences propounded by Howard Gardner, a psychology prof at Harvard.) I know a guy who made 2.2 in engineering who would easily have made a 2.1 or even first class if he had studied chemistry, sociology or international relations. On the other hand, I know a guy who made 2.2 in engineering who would have made third class if he studied law or English.

Generally, there are multiple intelligences and people tend to be gifted in different areas. That’s why Einstein said if you judge a fish by its ability to climb trees you’d classify it a failure. However, there are people who tend to be intelligent across a few areas – in their WASSCE they would make As in English, Maths, Geography, French and on like that.

I would say engineering is practically tougher than law. Law is practically tougher than geography or international relations. Geography or international relations is practically tougher than sociology. But engineering and sociology are in different areas of study entirely and require different intelligences so you can find someone who does well in engineering and poorly in sociology. It depends on the individual’s area of strength.
Health › Re: Nigerians Don't Suffer Depression, Really? by JuanDeDios: 8:19am On Sep 11, 2014
Excelboi: Depression is real and I have suffered from it twice. I just got over the second episode about a week ago. I'm currently on medication and everything is totally normal now. If you are feeling depressed, you need to see a psychiatrist and you maybe put on meds. Pity and hope doesn't work with depression, sometimes you can't fight it alone, you have to seek a professional help.
If you sense that you don't like doing what you like doing before, getting sad over a particular incident for a long period of time, sleeping too little or sleeping a lot, crying without helping it, then there is a possibility you are suffering from depression. The illness doesn't look face, it can affect infant, adolescent and adults and no matter how rich you are, it can attack you. An example is a case of an American celebrity who died some few weeks back. Depression led him to suicide. So try not to get shy and seek for help. And most importantly, it's not everyone you should tell that you have depression. They may make it worse.
Some people get over it through therapy, while some others are put on prozac and cognitive therapy to fight it. Sometimes exercise help. If you need advise and help on how to combat it, you can speak up here and may ask for my contact, feel free.
I'd like a psychiatrist's contact. Thanks.

It's neither good nor bad. It's just the way the world operates - deal with it. Now, where did I say the airforce man isn't worth a comment? Maybe they don't have a policy of commenting on individual officers. The Army didn't comment on Adeboye until the press started calling. Stop mixing things up.

Curlieweed: The laws against the free cultivation and consumption of cannabis have no basis in logic or even common sense. We will continue ignoring these archaic and illogical laws until our government and elected representatives do the right thing and throw them into the dust heap of history.

Redundant laws like these not only restrict individual rights but because they're routinely ignored by otherwise law abiding citizens contribute to making people "hardened" and blasé towards keeping other societally beneficial laws.

Just legalize it!
Strangest thing is the seeming consensus on the issue. The West said drugs are bad and declared a "war" and the rest of the world followed suit! The "war on drugs" is the most senseless and wasteful endeavour embarked upon by mankind in the modern era. I hope this gathers momentum and change comes eventually.
Agriculture › Re: FG Set To Ban Hides And Skin “ponmon” by JuanDeDios: 6:12pm On Sep 09, 2014
Obiagelli: Heard this 2yrs ago. Ban the damn thing already. We should be producing and exporting leather instead of eating kpomo that has been smoked with burning tyres.
I too want us to produce leather but this is a bad idea.

In a market economy, demand, supply and prices interact to balance out the market. If there are functional tanneries collecting skins and offering good money, the farmers would rather sell to them than roast it for pomo - a kid of six would know this. This would create scarcity and the price of pomo would go up and those who insist on eating the the stuff would still have it but would have to pay more. When this happens fewer people would be eating pomo. Nobody offered the farmers "dollars" and they insisted on roasting the stuff for pittance. I think this is another poorly thought out policy by a government that has not brought in the tanneries and dollars but wants to institute a ban first.

masonkz: You guys are part of what's wrong with our Academic system. Why not remove the pride and just accept the correction? or at least let someone else learn that "staff" is actually the correct way of spelling it? Instead of putting him down that way.

Later everyone will start screaming at the failure rate of our secondary school students, when we actually indirectly encourage them to fail.
The problem I have with most correcters of grammar is this - they usually have poor of knowledge of what they set out to do since they don't appreciate the fine distinctions and registers of English grammar. They're usually cripples pretending to be strikers.

While I will concede that staffs may not be acceptable by some in strict formal writing, it is perfectly okay to use in informal writing such as we do here. I can use staffs in a thesis and get away with it - remember I said only some holdouts will question it - since it is widely accepted in contemporary usage.

Now, grammar is dynamic. Thus, while you will find dictionaries that agree with you, I can assure you that in another edition of the same dictionary in another 10 years you will see staffs.

*
Now, again, all this is beside the point. This thread was opened to highlight an important malaise ailing our society. Nitpicking grammar on it seems quite foolish to me. There are countless threads in Nairaland where they do grammar. If you're concerned about secondary school failure rates and think staffs might be responsible or be a contributory factor you can open a thread and staff it to explain that staff not staffs is correct grammar - if I see the thread I will come in (as a non-staff) and offer my insights as to why you may not be absolutely right.

Nigerian soldiers are turning back fleeing residents of Mubi in Adamawa State as they engage Boko Haram insurgents in an attempt to regain the town.

The soldiers are also said to be engaging in a fierce battle with members of the sect all through Sunday night and Monday morning to regain full control of Michika.

Fighter jets are bombing the hideouts of the insurgents while foot soldiers battle their locations around Michika local government area secretariat.

Executive Director of Stefanos, Mr. Mark Lipdo, quoting military sources in the battle field, said that the military are turning back Nigerians running out of Mubi in reaction to the news of insurgents approaching Mubi town.

A curfew is now in place to enable the military restore order as reports say that the military are gaining ground over the insurgents.

Politics › Military Reclaims Bama After Battle With B’ Haram by JuanDeDios(op): 3:12pm On Sep 08, 2014
Military reclaims Bama after battle with B’ Haram
• Fight rages in Gwoza, Gambouru, Wulgo
• Jonathan leaves for Chad over to terrorism, others

AFTER a fierce battle, the nation’s military has reclaimed Bama town, Borno State from the terror group Boko Haram.
Boko Haram captured the area last Monday. But after aerial bombardments by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF)’s fighter jets, the military has reclaimed Bama. Sources confirmed this yesterday in Maiduguri, the state capital.
A military source said that the aerial bombardments were meant to destroy Boko Haram’s weapons and installations in the border town.
He said: “Our tactical aerial attacks to reclaim this town have been effective and yielding the desired results. This will enable the fleeing residents and villagers to return within the shortest period of time.”

But a source who was taking refuge in Maiduguri lamented the cost of the battle as it “took a heavy toll on civilian lives and property as the insurgents were said to be embedded with residents, allegedly used as human shields.”
On how Bama was reclaimed, the military source said: “The first attacks didn’t really make the expected impact but the second round of bombardments really injured those Boko Haram boys, which is why they are retreating now. They are now deeper into Bama, while our people are advancing and gaining territory. The Boko Haram boys are right now retreating.

“We are now dislodging them. You know, the air force has intensified its efforts; it brought F-7 and different kinds of aircraft. They really bombarded them.”

Another military source confirmed the advances of the armed forces in the battle of Bama but cautioned that it was no time for celebration yet, as the operation was still ongoing in several parts of the state.
He said the situation was “still very volatile” in Gwoza, Gambouru, Wulgo and one or two towns in northern Borno, were far from being liberated from the terrorists’ takeover in the last three months.
“We don’t want to say anything official but there are still fights going on in different places and on different scales, especially by air. This is a critical and unusual time,” the senior military officer said.
He also explained that apart from the aerial campaign in Bama, NAF had been effective in support of the ground forces with the launch of air attacks with different aircraft types, including helicopter gunships.

He said: “We are very deeply involved. You know what we are having here is a joint operation of the services, even though the navy may not be involved right now because of the terrain.
“First and foremost, apart from the airlift, we are equally supporting the ground forces; in most of the cases we even take the initiative. In modern warfare, the air force normally does the first dirty job, clear the road for the army to do the mop-up operations.
“Like I said, all our platforms are participating fully here. We have Alpha Jets, we have F7, Beechcraft, Mi35, which are the gunships, and then all our transport planes: C-130, the G TripleT. So we are participating fully and playing a significant role in that place.”

But a military intelligence source in Maiduguri said yesterday: “Gwoza is still a no-go area, I must tell you the truth, the town is firmly in hands of the Boko Haram terrorists. We are currently focusing on Bama before advancing to other areas in northern and southern parts of Borno State.”
Sources within the military blamed some of the difficulties being encountered in the fight against Boko Haram on what they termed indiscriminate retirement of experienced officers.
“Our capital city of Maiduguri is today facing a heavy influx of refugees from the local government areas in Borno. Borno citizens have been forced to take refuge in parts of Gombe and Adamawa states mainly on account of man’s inhumanity to fellow man in the gratuitous name of religion. These acts are absolutely condemnable in the strongest of terms,” said the military officer.

Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno in his statewide broadcast on Saturday said that in the history of the state since the 19th century, the latest insurgency was “not the first threat to our existence as a people. We had faced and survived threats in years past and we shall survive this by God’s willing.
“We are confident of victory through a reinforcement of our armed forces and the collective will of all of us, citizens, who are committed to defeating the Boko Haram scourge.”
In continuation of the government’s efforts to forge a stronger alliance against terrorism with Nigeria’s neighbours, President Goodluck Jonathan leaves Abuja today for Njamena, the Chadian capital.

While in Chad, Jonathan is expected to hold talks with his host President Idriss Deby to discuss how to further actualise parts of the agreements for greater cooperation against insurgents and terrorists reached by Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroun at a meeting in Paris earlier this year.
A statement by the Special Adviser, Media and Publicity to the President, Reuben Abati, in Abuja yesterday said the talks in Ndjamena with Deby, who is also the current Chairman of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council followed their discussions in Nairobi last week on the sidelines of the council’s summit.
“Their talks are expected to lead to the strengthening of the Paris Accord on joint border patrols, intelligence sharing and the prevention of the illicit movement of terrorists, criminals, arms and ammunition across shared borders.

“Before returning to Abuja on Tuesday, Jonathan, who would be accompanied by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Mohammed Sambo Dasuki (rtd); the Minister of Communication Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, and the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Nurudeen Mohammed and the Director General of the National Space Research and Development Agency, (NASRDA), Prof. Sheidu Mohammed, would be a special guest of honour at an international conference on Information Technology and Communication (ICT) holding in Ndjamena on the same day.
Meanwhile, the national leader of Accord party (AP) and former Governor Rashidi Ladoja of Oyo State yesterday declared that having exhausted all negotiation options, the Federal Government was set to overrun the Boko Haram insurgents at all costs.
The AP chieftain expressed confidence that the Boko Haram group would not be able to overrun the country.

Ladoja spoke in Ibadan after receiving the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, who paid him a condolence visit at his Bodija residence over the death of his mother, Alhaja Alimat Ladoja.
As a member of the just-concluded national conference held in Abuja, Ladoja said the delegates recommended to Jonathan to negotiate with the terrorists but that if this failed, he should confront them with all the military might of the government.
“I believe that President Jonathan has started making good the recommendation. He told us that he had concluded negotiation processes with the Boko Haram. Since these failed, the second option is now the alternative. You can see that demonstrated in the recent ruthless attack on the insurgents when they wanted to take over Bama.

“Boko Haram cannot overrun the country. Security matters are not discussed on the pages of newspapers. Nigeria is not a small country that can be taken over by insurgents just like that. The Federal Government is not helpless as being insinuated. I believe strongly that the attacks by the Boko Haram would soon be over. I trust the military. I trust them that they will live up to expectation”, Ladoja said.
http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/lead-story/178156-military-reclaims-bama-after-battle-with-b-haram

Sorry, but I have my doubts about this method.

Boko Haram stays in camps and travels in long convoys - that is when we should be bombing them. When they are embedded with civilians you need ground troops with close aerial support of helicopter gunships. The Air Force can support with smart bombs (if we have smart bombs) for use on specific targets - generalised bombing of neigbbourhoods in a Nigerian city is a no-no.

But all-in-all, I wish our troops well and hope this madness ends soon.
