GAZZUZZ: Kashif, you still have not said what type of fluid you used.
When clutches start slipping, best bet is to replace transmission. Its a nigerian thing, rebuilding has no guarantees.
Meanwhile I ask again, what fluid did you use? Visco 2000? Are you serious? It was filled with Toyota WS ATF. That is the recommended fluid by Toyota. Unless you buy a new transmission, there is no guarantee either. Nobody sells a working transmission if the car is not accidented. I tested the solenoids with him, and saw that the four linears are out of resistance range. I had doubts, but when I learnt he has changed the fibre, some confidence was restored. I would rather go for a rebuild if the dude knows his onions, unless I have the money for a brand new transmission. |

mayor2013: Go and buy another transmission. From your story you have a bad maintenance record for your transmission. For you to have a burnt smell from the oil you must have had the fibre burnt and sludges too. Those sludges still had the fibres grip well but as soon as the oil was drain the sludges couldn't hold on to the fibre. You can as well run a scan. But be prepared to buy another transmission. If I were your mechanic immediately I check the nature of your transmission oil would have told you same thing am saying. Am very sure you have never serviced that transmission right from whenever you bought the ride I don't know how you rushed into this conclusion, with the info I provided. Well, the car is just five months with me, and I know when to change transmission oil. I noticed the burnt fluid when I checked it in the morning before driving back from the east. I understand the fibre has already been changed, and there was no sludge. The repair tech said the only problem are the linear solenoids. |

Carrying full tank does not keep your car healthy in any way. Just make sure you do not get to reserve. I top up at 1/4.
For me, always carrying full thank reduces fuel economy because it is extra load. I drive as light as possible. If travelling, I go full tank though. |
Car Talk › Rav4 2007 V6 Transmission Problem by Kashif(op): 1:50pm On Jan 16, 2015 |
Guys, I asked my mechanic to flush my Rav4 V6 transmission, and the trans now malfunctions.
Shifts well but slips on 4-5. The technician says its the solenoid switches but I really do not agree. My reason - there has been a swap but the issue remains. The fluid was burnt, hence my reason for a flush. There was no issue after the flush until the filter was replaced. This problem now is an improvement from slippage on 2-3, and erratic shifting. According to him, the replaced solenoids were responsible for the improvement. If so, why does it not fully cure the trans? I have seen him rebuild transmissions but I tend to disagree with this.
I have read someone who had failed solenoids on same trans, but replacing them did not solve it, though his issues were more than mine. A rebuild, and later, reset of the trans ECM settled it.
Since the fluid was burnt, could there be some underlying problems? I don't want to throw money away buying wrong parts. Any ideas?
Thanks. |

IdaraCHODB: A car is a major investment, if the vehicle breakdowns in the middle of nowhere, the expense and inconvenience can be high. You asked a good question, so that your decision will be rational. So I am going to see if I can help you lay the facts and help you come to a conclusion! When was your vehicle manufactured? What was the applicable Dexron standard then? If your vehicle were manufactured today, would the manufacturer uses an outdated/withdrawn Dexron standard (assuming it did not join the bandwagon of creating its own fluid for its own type of car)? What is the meaning of backward-compatible? If you needed to replace an ECM would you get the old part (which has the same part number as the failed part) or the updated part (which has an incremented part no)? Anywhere, this is the most authoritative source I can point to http://www.archivedsites.com/techlink/2009/05/ Just remember that the licenses for Dexron III were withdrawn as far back as 2005 or 2005 and so anything can claim to be Dexron III, there is no check, unlike Dexron VI. BUT THEN THINGS AREN'T ALWAYS BLACK AND WHITE, WE HAVE GOT GREY SO READ THE FOLLOWING AS WELL! http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=3090111 Particularly 04SE's comments and jadnhm's as well http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=3014880#Post3014880 Hope I have been useful! WebMania: Hey, I don't agree with you there. I'm also waiting for shipments from Dec 1st, 8th, and 15th to arrive. This is the first time I'm shipping with Chinosxl, and I don't think he's doing badly at all. At least not yet. About responding to mails, I've had course to interact with different businesses in the US, both small and large organisations. And based on my own interaction with Chinosxl, I don't think he's doing badly in comparison with the other businesses, both big and small. In fact, I think he's doing well. And, by businesses, this includes Apple and Microsoft. I do not intend to argue, or derail this thread, but his rate of response has considerably, and understandably, reduced. He may still be doing well (by your standard), but you can't compare it to when he started. Reading through this thread is enough indication. Right now, he needs more hands, no doubt. |

Car Talk › Re: Can Anyone Explain 'bushing' In Automobile, Please? by Kashif(m): 9:26am On Nov 15, 2014 |
lomomike: Judging from Nigerian mechanic's language, bushings refers to rubber mounts for engine, gearbox, propeller shafts, rubber components on suspensions, and rubber hangs for exhausts. Bushing is not Nigerian mechanic's language. It is universally standard. You will even find it in manuals. And, you are right about the definition. |

Yesterday, a man narrated how his neighbour sowed his family's means of livelihood to their church. The pastor asked them to sow what is very dear, and would shake them. He had to give up his commercial truck. He acted in good fate.
However, when he got home and tried explaining to his wife, all hell was let lose! The wife gives and sows too but, this is very different for her. The man could not tell her where their next meal would come from. In the end, he realised he may have overreacted.
To cut the story short, he went back to the church the following day and asked for his truck back. The church leadership were stunned, but the man explained his predicament. He was told to wait because the truck had been deployed to haul some blocks for their construction work. When it came back, it was handed over to him. Thank God he still had his original document.
True life story; happened in Lagos. |

Car Talk › Re: Brand New Ford Focus 2014 Transmission Overheating by Kashif(m): 4:16pm On Nov 14, 2014 |
CityNG: Hogwash. Your comparison of a modern car to a complex airliner is unsound. Depressing your clutch in a manual is a safety feature and very common. Having to learn how to drive a car in a particular is just another failure from Ford. This has nothing to do with reading a manual. You should never have to read a manual for something as mundane as this. Go tell it to the marines, Mr sound! |
Car Talk › Re: Brand New Ford Focus 2014 Transmission Overheating by Kashif(m): 9:48am On Nov 14, 2014 |
CityNG: You can beg all you want but I stand with my original comment. Where you stand is up to you. There are modern manual trans cars that you can only start their engines at full clutch. Why is that? Manual transmissins are known to select in different ways. Where will you find these info if not from your manual or someone tells you? Do you go flying a Boeing 777 because you have a million miles under your belt flying 737, claiming that 777 is modern? No! Not holding brief for Ford but, read your manual, you will always learn something new. They may have come up with a crappy transmission, but they have instructed you on how to use it. But no, 'they must be traditional or no deal'. Good luck! |
