Car Talk / Re: Pls Help: Car Engine Turns Off And Dies When Car Is Put In Drive Or Reverse. by Kashif(m): 10:08pm On Jun 11, 2018
onilanre:
My Toyota Camry 2007 vehicle starts up fine, engine idles regularly, in neutral the engine can be revved up with no problem. When car is put into drive or reverse, the engine sputters and then seizes up and dies. Check engine light comes on after car engine dies. My car mileage is 118500k, automatic transmission.

Torque converter clutch is staying applied. Raise the two front tyres off the ground and see what happens. How did this start?
Car Talk / Re: What Car Type Can A Family Man With An Income Of 110k Per Month Maintain? by Kashif(m): 7:35am On Jun 10, 2018
OP, It won't be easy to own a car as a family of three that earn 110k/month. Rent, feeding, medicals, school fees, utility, extended family etc, are there too.

Cost of automobile ownership is not all about fuel and servicing. Be aware of engine and transmission cost as anything can happen. To avoid costly repairs, you must give it sublime care, which won't be cheap. Also remember you will need to replace tyres at some point.

Not discouraging you, just trying to expand your awareness. Best of luck.

Your choice of car is not bad though.

Car Talk / Re: As A Car Mechanic, What Is The Most Strange Faults You Have Found On An Car? by Kashif(m): 5:01pm On Jun 03, 2018
I see many complaints about rodent attacks.

WD40 works in keeping them away. Spray on the wires periodically. I heard original Irish Spring soap works too. There is another powder, whose name I can't remember now. It's downside though is for the very next guy that works in the engine bay, and happens to get it to his eyes, or that precious tool between the legs! grin

Not a dirty MAF, try driving the Rav4 2GR, it's a sprinter without Lag. Clearly a Mapping issue.

I agree with you 100% It races just like a bat from hell! It is even more demonic if fitted with a low stall TC.

I have driven Siennas with same engine, and came to same conclusion - mapping! The first one even sent me chasing my tail, trying to figure out what could be wrong with its performance. grin

@radautoworks, With the way you guys are going, I have no doubt you will do well, especially in that axis.

Last Tuesday, I needed to buy a new radiator for a Toyota Sienna, and my mechanic directed me to a shop in Ladipo. Because I was not expecting such elegant building to be selling auto parts, I missed it twice!

Eventually called the owner and he told me that was indeed the building. I was ushered into a posh compound with security. These guys sell parts off standard PC inventory - Toyota only, and people were just coming in - mechanics, owners, resellers

Don't worry about patronage, because it will come. Just maintain good standard. Kudos!

Second pic shows a rubber and full metal vvt pipes. First pic shows location of vvt pipe (upper left of picture, from top cylinder to block), and oil cooler pipe (lower right of picture).

Thanks for the clarification. I will assume the vvt pipe has higher risk, due to higher pressure. It's the one that kills the engine most when it does happen.

Toyota's 6peed Transmission is also lazy making it worse
Always trying to select higher gears. Better mpg. But slow response. Very short ratio like a diesel

I dont think the 6 speeds are lazy. They shift according to your throttle input. Its 1:1 happens in 4th gear.

Ten years is 20million without interests
That should give at least 2-3million annual interest which is close to what our guy was living on before grin

exactly!! and someone planning to buy a reg used 02 camry cannot pay more than 10k for off-site inspection. so it's more like a trade off..... how many people are willing to buy the range and how many are buying the Camry. so for a premium service such as the one op is offering, he has to limit his portfolio to the high-end individuals and if he wants to revolutionalize Nigerian he might have a separate structure that will take care of other low and middle cadre requests.

but wait, catering for only high end individuals will result in very little traffic but mega deals per engagement and prolonged turnover

catering for lower cadres will result in faster turnovers, more profit, heavy traffic etc
but this would also involve stocking inferior parts which will negate the original intent of the biz as emphasized by op in her opening speech.

oh well, I'm sure op has taken into cognizance all these points before now and has a well thought out plan to mitigate all risks involved

I don't think what the OP is offering is premium service; I see it as standard instead.

There are people who are willing to pay for standard services, as long as they are getting value for money. For many of these people, the most important question for them is "can you fix it?" They will avoid you if you sound cheap. Counterfeit is a big problem in Nigeria. Most of the things you buy off the market are fake, and might even break before you leave the market! Even those who stock genuine products keep them away, until you say you want the original. Personally, I have learnt to spend only if I can get value for money.

Coming to the Camry analogy, if you have spent 15k+labour three times on a fake part in a year, won't you be better off spending 40k once on genuine part? I laugh when people argue that tokumbo is better than new. It is because they dont/cant find the genuine parts. Once, I asked my mechanic to change my brake pads because I was travelling. By the time I got to my destination, my wheels where covered in black powder, and my parking brake handle was upright on engagement!

As a mechanic, rather than work for 10 bargain hunters for 10k each, wont you rather work for 5 people who know value, for 20k each, or even less? You are better organised, less hassle, and lower overhead. This is because if you are a professional, you will always deliver standard service, no matter if it is a 1996 Mazda, or a 2018 BMW. In the 80-20 rule, wont it be nice if 80% of your revenue come from 20% of your customers?

Somebody here mentioned that so many car owners don't have the financial capacity to own automobiles. Some will want you to come to their house for 5k! grin

Yes we will and as time goes on by January, we will also be rebuilding transmissions with 6 month to one year warranties. We just have to see what mix we are getting to bring in the right transmission kits.

Good!

Will be worthwhile investing in TC rebuilding, if its within your means.

Can't be in business 15 years and be a quack though I get your concern. Also can't get Nigeria as a territory without a proven track record

Not in any way inferring that you are quack. Just saying that as much as Nigeria car owners are frustrated, it is not all rosy for others either. Difference is that you are able to get your money back (most times) if the job is not delivered over there. In US for instance, dealerships can cut off a head to cure headache.

Car Talk / Re: Rx 300 Gear Box Advice Needed by Kashif(m): 10:36pm On May 13, 2018
From your explanation, you obviously have a hard part failure. Maybe planetary, drum, torque converter, final drive, etc.

You can buy the transmission without the rear differential part and reuse yours. Don't go front wheel.

With metallic debris in your sump, I advise you replace the radiator also, since you may not have the means to flush the cooler line.

Nice Move OP.

Many cars are parked because owners have given up. Some people are willing to pay, but the expertise is not available. Most parts are fake, down to oils!

I have seen quack mechanics abroad too though.

Will you sell auto transmission parts?
