Politics / Praise The Lord! Caroline Johnson Is Back! by kech(f): 1:16am On Oct 08, 2009

http://lindaikeji..com/2009/10/caroline-johnsons-message-to-all.html

Caroline Johnson, the lady diagnosed with Leukaemia I featured on my blog many weeks back, is back in Nigeria after undergoing treatment in India. To everyone who helped, with money, with prayers and by spreading the news around, I say thank you on her behalf. Though still recuperating, Caroline found strength to write a letter to everyone. read it below.*

Dear all,
HE KEPT HIS WORD…

This is Caroline Johnson and am happy to write this letter. Firstly, I would like to let you know that Jesus Christ really lives and I thank God for seeing me through.

I sympathize with those out there going through this because I have been there; I know what it is to be helpless, hopeless and sick. My prayer is that our good Lord will rise up on your case as he did with mine.

I am inspired and glad to write you all and with sincere appreciation deep down within me, I would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to every one who has been a part of my medical trip to India and above all your Prayers.

I arrived safely from India and I am in good health. Before I left as you must have read, I was diagnosed with LEUKEMIA (cancer of the blood) and with CENTRAL NERVOUS complication and breakdown to the point that I could no longer walk, loss of hearing and loss of vision and at a point I started having seizures. But today, no single LEUKEMIC CELL (cancer cell) can be found in me! PRAISE GOD!

Though I have scars and still on physiotherapy due to a foot drop, I know that my Lord will perfect that which He has started. I will be going back to India in a couple of months for further check up.

In as much as I would like to thank every one personally which I know may not be possible, you can reach me on my e-mail caroline@savecarolinejohnson.com and on my yahoo messenger cece_za@yahoo.com my face book Caroline Johnson. I will personally respond to every email I get to read.

Once again, thank you very much, the good lord will bless you, keep you, uplift you and continue to show you mercy.

Before I conclude, I thank God for giving me a second chance to be what He wants me to be, the mother to my wonderful children and wife to my ever supportive, loving and caring husband.

Thank you very much and God bless you all.

Caroline Johnson (a.k.a Uju Heavens Gate)

not to pour cold water on your yarns but u can't force me to treat gunshot victims,it is my right to decide as a medical doctor who i want to render care to,so although it may not be ethical it definitely cannot be illegal. enough of jungle legislation pls

Matrim honey, it is not your right anything. Maybe if you are a doctor in Naija, you can do anything you want because no one cares.  I cannot speak for other countries but in the US your license will be either be suspended, revoked or you'll go to jail. You cannot play ten-ten with people's lives here. A place where you DARE NOT pass an accident victim on the road if you are a Doctor or nurse. If you don't want to do your job as a medical doctor especially when you are qualified to do so, that's dangerous. Technically, you are a hazard to the field.

After 10 years, we find a spark in the brain cell of hundreds of morons, that pack into the legislative chambers, to correct the policy prescribed by a supermoron.

Someone actually sat down and formulated a policy that states that an individual dying of gunshot wound that obviously will need rapid medical intervention should first seek out the police force, explain to them the circumstances of his wounds, get a note from them and then take a journey back to the hospital before he is treated.

Retarded souls!!!

My dear, you just took the words out of my mouth. The same way some idiot woke up one bright and sunny morning probably after having nightmares of scantily clad girls, drove to work, sat her butt down and decided to concoct and pass an "indecent dressing" bill. That's what one gets when we have a bunch of Mega-morons in government.

Okay, let's assume this is real. How does one allow someone who cannot even write a coherent sentence apply for him/her? OP, you came here to sell your services and you can't even do it right. Look at the grammar in your post. If you can make such grammatical errors in such a small sentence, what will you do to my application? Or you guys think English doesn't matter? Bad English in Application letters and Resumes is a big turn off ooo. If you don't know, ask somebody.

@Kech, "Pls dont blame me ok. cos u jumped to conclusion without basis. thats not very professional of u. i am only switching job ok. if the pay is good. so its not a do or die affair. i hope u get".

@fizzybaba. i appreciate your input. its very insightful.

Goodluck to all nairalanders.

Are you for real? Do you really want to get a job? My dear, don't get sensitive. There's no judging here. No one cares whether you switched professions or not. The problem is that you FORGOT the job you want to switch to. I know you can find that out by checking your e-mail, but what if you were in a situation where you couldn't check your email and they had called you to come for the test immediately. What would you have told them or written down? It is a bit irresponsible. I know the procedure of screening applicants. In professional offices, no one has time for people who come in to look for ANY job. You must be specific.  When I said you should put yourself together before going for the interview, I meant it. I meant gather your thoughts about EVERYTHING your job entails in the company you are applying for. A lot of people don't know that before they go for interviews/tests at a company, they need to research on the company, what it does, the duties of the particular position they are applying for IN THAT COMPANY and how they can contribute to the growth of the company. If you had done that, there is NO WAY you could have forgotten. People just apply for jobs, forget about it and wait until they are called for interviews. This is the main reason why people fail them. They are unprepared!!!

People forget things, people make mistakes, I agree, but just take corrections and learn from it. This is not a time to prove anything because there is nothing that can excuse forgetting a job you applied for. Even if you applied for 10 different jobs at 10 different companies, you should remember them. It shows that you are responsible and that you know what you actually want. Forgive me if I sound harsh but I'm just a bit irritated. I just want you to realize that the job market out there is very harsh. They have no time for sentiments and mistakes. This may seem like it's not a big deal but it's mistakes like these that cost people potential jobs. So like I said, don't get sensitive.

For everyone else going for the tests. Research, Research, Research!! Do a research on the company, what they do, what the post you applied for entails (as regards to the company itself) and how you can contribute to the success of the company in your own little way!! You can read your GMAT or GRE or JAMB or whatever you think is necessary for the test, but always remember that there are probably going to be other applicants as smart as you are. They won't accept everybody so you need to distinguish yourself from the pack. Don't depend on the test scores alone. 100% will not get you the job if you don't know anything about the company or what you want to do there. (Unless you are going through the "back door" lipsrsealed )

I completely disagree. That discipline, I believe he learnt from his environment and its who he is.
I have noticed that as irresponsible and loud as the yoruba's are, a yoruba's man's priority in life is to send his children to school by hook or crook, and to makesure whenever there's a celebration to be had, he borrows the right amount of money. Gradually I see the ibos and hausas picking on the education road. Theres nothign special about a man working hard in nigeria to send his children to university. It is everybody'S story.
As for the hard working part, I think the ibos work very hard and with more education and refinement, could contribute a great deal to the direction nigeria is taking.
@Onlytruth, I dont think other Nigerians are the one's to recognise any attributes the Ibo's have. I think the Ibo's owe it to themselves first and foremost to clear up their own house before anything can be done.

Ok I wasn't going to reply to this but, are you for real? Come on now, this statement is definitely delusional. You need to look up the stats of university entrants and graduates in Nigeria. I think the problem is the Igbos have as many successful graduates as there are successful "illiterates" like many will like to call them. In other words, the probability that you'll come accross a successful igbo man/woman who is either educated or "illiterate" is almost 50/50.
Note: I'm just speaking for the Igbo tribe, I don't know about others. Also, my comment has nothing to do with the Original post.
Politics / Re: Grace Ushang’s Death And The Indecent Dressing Bill by kech(f): 6:56pm On Oct 04, 2009
This is insult upon injury. First, she was raped because she was putting on a uniform to serve this country. Secondly the bloddy DG of NYSC has the effontry to say corpers should  “take their personal security seriously because whatever we provided is not enough. They must learn to be security-conscious.”  shocked shocked shocked I'm at loss for words. I can only sympathize with the girl's family. The girl did not deserve to die this way. I remember when I was about to serve. This was in the wake of the Zamfara crisis.  My parents did all they could to get me to serve in Lagos. Yes, I worked it! I'm not ashamed. I remember telling my parents that if they posted me to the north, there was NO WAY I was going. NYSC be damned. I had friends who put off going for NYSC until they got posted to the Southern parts where they felt was ok.

It's ironic because when I was in camp, there were graduates from up north who didn't like the fact that they got posted to Lagos. They were so stubborn some of them didn't want to wear the NYSC uniform correctly because of some "religion issues".  I remember one girl saying "What is all this? Why did they post us here? They should have just left us at our place."  The Camp commandant actually cut them some slack out of respect of their religion. People from up there should learn to return this favour.  A lot of people didn't ask to be posted to the North, it just happened. I think they should just scrap this NYSC thing if they cannot ensure the safety and welfare of graduates.

When will these people realize that the because of religion fanatics, some places in the North are hazards to Corpers. It's just like after the Zamfara crisis, they wickedly posted graduates there and some of them got killed when some riot broke out later in the year. Common sense should have told them to hold off on that state for a while to see how situations unfold. Bloody Idiots!
Politics / Grace Ushang’s Death And The Indecent Dressing Bill by kech(f): 6:26pm On Oct 04, 2009
By Asma’u Joda & Iheoma Obibi
Grace Ushang was a young Nigerian woman who had every right to expect a bright future. Now she is dead merely because she was female. On the day that Nigeria celebrated its 49th Independence Anniversary on 1 October 2009, NEXT Newspaper reported that Ms. Ushang from Obudu in Cross River State, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in Maiduguri, Borno State, was raped to death by some men still at large, who, according to the story, “took offence because she was wearing her Khaki trousers – the official uniform of the youth corpers.”

The cavalier brutality of this morbid tale of criminal vigilante action is compounded by the official response to it. The Director-General of the NYSC reportedly travelled to Maiduguri ostensibly to discuss this crime with the State’s law enforcement authorities. Rather than denounce this for the crime that it is and reassure our young graduates on national service that their wellbeing preoccupies the highest levels of decision making, the Director-General merely advised Youth Corpers to “take their personal security seriously because whatever we provided is not enough. They must learn to be security-conscious.” Pray, how?

The compounded crimes that killed Grace Ushang painfully return our attention to the pervasiveness of violence against women in Nigeria and the growing resort to vigilante action to police vague notions of feminine propriety and decency. In 2008, the Chairperson of the Nigerian Senate’s Committee on Women, Senator Ufot Ekaette introduced a bill in the Senate to prohibit so called “indecent dressing”. At the public hearing on the Bill in July 2008, there was a consensus that its provisions portended great danger for the safety and security of Nigerian women. The Bill proposes to grant intolerably dangerous powers of arrest and invasion of the most intimate privacies of the woman’s body imaginable to both police officers and ordinary citizens to undertake vigilante action against women they merely perceive to be “indecently dressed”.

Senator Ekaette’s Bill covers any female above 14 years wearing a dress that exposes “her breast, laps, belly and waist… and any part of her body from two inches below her shoulders downwards to the knee” (such as the much-admired Fulani milk maid). Also liable to become a criminal if this Bill were to become law is any person dressed in “transparent” fabric (such as Lace) as well as men who expose any part of their bodies between the waist and the knee (such as men relieving themselves by the roadside). All these people and more would presumably attract arrest from zealous policemen. If this Bill becomes law, there will not be enough prisons or mortuaries in Nigeria for its victims. It will licence vigilante violence against women, leading to fatalities like the fate that befell Grace Ushang.

Grace Ushang’s story demonstrates the fallacy of the justifications for laws like the Senator Ekaette’s Indecent Dressing Bill. Those who wish to commit crimes of sexual violence need no excuse. They must be treated like the predators they are. If a woman, like Grace Ushang, dressed in regulation clothing prescribed by the Federal Republic of Nigeria is considered to be so indecently dressed as to be put to death by the most vile acts of violence imaginable, how do we guarantee the safety and security of Nigerian women in the uniformed services, such as the Armed Forces, Police, Prisons Service, and Immigration?

The killing of Grace Ushang is part of a pattern of violence against women that deserves urgent attention across borders in this year of the 30th Anniversary of the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). In some countries of Sahelian and East Africa and the Middle East, women who survive rape get put to death for allegedly bringing dis-honour to their families. Or are charged with zina (adultery) as they “have made love”; as any form of sexual intercourse consensual or non consensual, can be translated to mean “love making”.

Only recently in Sudan, Lubna Hussein, a former employee of the United Nations, along with 12 other Sudanese women, were charged with the offence of dressing indecently for wearing trousers. Sudanese law prohibits ‘dressing indecently’ in public. Absurd? Yes, certainly, by Nigerian standards, where no person bats an eyelid at the sight of women in jeans, or in offices, clad in trouser suits – or so we thought until Grace Ushang was raped to death. Sudan’s laws, however, criminalise a woman’s dressing, prescribing lashing and an unlimited fine for any woman ‘in public’ dressed like a ‘man’.

Lubna resigned her employment at the UN, which would have granted her immunity from trial, to compel the courts to take a stand on an issue she feels (quite rightly) should be a matter of public concern, because they impact directly on her human dignity, freedom of choice and privacy. By her action, Lubna placed Sudanese ‘justice’ in the global spotlight and should, hopefully, trigger change in policy and law in that country.

We may not yet have a law that determines what a woman (or man) can wear but there can be no tolerance of the growing tendency towards vigilante enforcement of notions of indecency. Sudan and Nigeria have similar lawmakers it seems. Surely, someone sat down and determined for Sudan, in his opinion, what is permissible as a woman’s choice of dress, and garnered Parliamentary support for his personal belief that wearing trousers was an abomination that should be penalized. In the same manner, some persons in the Nigerian Senate are unilaterally and arbitrarily attempting to decide for Nigerians what should be the acceptable form or mode of ‘dressing’ for women. No account has been taken of the diversity and the culture in both countries, or even of the fact that in African rural settings, women routinely expose much more, without giving a thought to it being ‘indecent’. Nor has there been any reckoning of the effect that this will have on the safety of women.

As Sudan struggles with the implications of its indecent dressing laws, and its courts struggle to find ways around it, Nigeria’s own lawmakers appear bent on imposing these retrograde and potentially explosive laws over here. While they are looking for ways to move forward, our legislators seem determined to throw us back into the past.

Our lawmakers should focus on passing measures that promote human dignity, preclude discrimination, and guarantee human wellbeing. Instead of a law on indecent dressing, they can accord priority to enacting a law to protect all Nigerian women from the wanton violence and ensure that all perpetrators of such violence are brought to justice. As a first step, the Senate should vote down the Indecent Dressing Bill and firmly close any further arguments on it. In its place, and in memory of Grace Ushang, we need a federal law on violence against women. That would be an appropriate way to commemorate the tragedy of her senseless killing.

Interesting topic. Reminds me of my uncle (a medical doctor) who wanted my sister to marry his friend who is a NeuroSurgeon. My sister of course had other plans and got engaged to someone else. My uncle never got off her case and told whoever that cared to know that my sister turned down a neurosurgeon.
Ironically, my uncle came into my city cos he wanted to drop off his son who was starting off College. He then "introduced " me to another of his friends whom I later got to find out is the younger brother of the "Neurosurgeon". Guess what his profession was? A Neurosurgeon too!!! He is from a family of all boys and a girl and they are ALL doctors/Surgeons. THEY HAVE 3 NEUROSURGEONS IN THE FAMILY!!  shocked shocked He seemed nice but, there was no connection between us, Kai!!! angry angry Unfortunately I can't bring myself to have anything to do with anyone I'm not attracted to. Oh well .  undecided undecided
My uncle has definitely given up on us. Him go say these girls be mumu.  grin grin

This happened to a friend of mine who attended her ex-boyfriend's wedding. She was filled wit tears almost making it public, thanks to another friend Who went wit her.
So can you attend your Exes wedding? On what grounds? What will you and will you not do at the venue?,

I don't get it. She's definitely a sucker for punishment. I can only attend my ex's wedding only if I'm also in a serious and happy relationship. You all need to understand that no matter how "cool" you and your ex is after break-up, if one person is still single, there are always going to be thoughts of "what-if's". "What if I made a mistake? What if we could have tried to work things out? What if we had communicated more?" The only way people REALLY move on if they meet someone AND FALL IN LOVE AGAIN, because people go out with others and still think about their exes.

Going to an ex's wedding is risky. You can never trust your emotions not to give you away. Like I said earlier, if the other party is not also in a serious and happy relationship, there is a high possiblility that he/she may get sensitive. A lot of people attend their ex's weddings not because they want to, but because their ex's asked them to and because they want to save face and show everyone that there are no hard feelings. If you are really ok with it, fine. If you don't want to or are not sure, just sit your butt at home. This one no be to form bravado. Let people say what they like. Remember that there's going to be pressure on you at the wedding cos some nosy people will make it their duty to monitor your expressions/behaviour throughout the wedding. It happens. People are that grimy.

NOTE: This does not apply to relationships that were ended due to violence

I am very proud of you all.  Even though we fight and bicker at our differences most of the time, it's good to know that we still can come together and be each other's keeper when it matters the most. If you want to start an argument or war, just write a story about her. That chic is an automatic web traffic puller.   grin grin For those who want to play down this girl's fame, come on, give it up. Like I said earlier, Oprah was right on the money. Which actor/actress in the whole of AFRICA can you mention is more popular than Genevieve IN AFRICA? I'm talking about from the grassroots to the elites. Someone whom whenever her name is mentioned , brings about both good and bad reactions. This girl is LOVED by many and HATED by many. No other African actor has that kind of effect on people. Even Charlize Theron from SA that won an Oscar (bless her heart, I love her to death) IS NOT more famous than Genevieve is IN AFRICA!. Go to the most remote places in Africa and ask them who Charlize Theron is and they will ask you if that is a kind of fruit. It's not beans. wink

We get it, Oprah is not God, but that's not the point. The point is Genevieve was recognized and it is a BIG DEAL whether you want to believe it or not.  If we didn't think so, then we wouldn't be so angry when Oprah made those comments about Naija. People make derogatory comments about Naija all the time but why did Oprahs's comment get to us more? Because we know her stance in the society, the kind of weight her show pulls and the impending effect it had/may have had on our image. So lets all stop deceiving ourselves when understanding the kind of impact her show will/may have on Genevieve. A lot of entertainers here in the US will give their arms and legs to be on Oprah NOT because of Oprah herself, but because her show is the greatest avenue to advertise themselves and their services to the world. The exposure on that show for entertainers is unparalleled. That is WORD!

But come ooo. Why can't she get paid $1M? because she's Nigerian? Like Aloy said, some naija people either don't know their worth or try to cheapen themselves. If you are cheap, others are not!!! I don't know how true the amount quoted is but until we hear otherwise stop making assumptions. For those hoping that she was paid 1 million NAIRA, I seriously doubt it. Its obvious that genevieve is a force to reckon with. No wonder the comments keep flowing. She obviously attracts alot of attention otherwise you would simply have ignored the thread and waka pass. But no, you were struck again by this girl whose achievement knows no bounds. In your littleness and inferiority complex, you cannot comprehend why despite all verbal attacks, contoversy and media mis-information about this STAR, she continues to make waves.

So in your smallness and defeated state of mind, you resort to writing unkind remarks about her appearance on Oprah's show. Face the truth, she has added another first to her many firsts. As a commentator said yesterday " Genevieve sat down in her home in Nigeria and Oprah came knocking" Have you noticed that things which say or do, it can't unbless her.
most actresses struggle for Genevieve achieves effortlessly? That's because she is blessed and no matter what you haters

Your opinion of genevieve are entirely yours and yours alone. It probably will begin and perish on Nairaland. Genevieve fortunatley may never get to know it in her lifetime. Being on Oprah may mean nothing to you haters, but mark my words, this is just the beginning of a new chapter in her lfe.

The more you try to bring her down, the more she lifts the bar higher. There is a force behind her unending success and thats the BLESSING of God that maketh rich and addeth no sorrows with it. Thats why her achievements are so remarkable because by strenght shall no man prevail.

You too can be a winnner and be celebrated only if you first celebrate others. For what you do not like can NEVER come to you. The sky is too big for everyone to shine and Genny is LIVING HER LIFE ON PURPOSE. she is doing what she knows best and getting paid for what she loves.

How about you? are YOU LIVING YOUR LIFE ON PURPOSE? Or are you in the wrong profession? You can still make changes. So do that and quit hating.

Those who hate never find love.

God bless you Vanni. You couldn't have said it better. Someone once said "Jealousy is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die". You can NEVER curse who God has blessed. You'll just end up getting hurt. The girl is probably somewhere praising God and making more money, some are here fuming, having sleepless nights, wishing her bad, plotting her demise and  getting high blood pressure thereby reducing their life span.  lipsrsealed lipsrsealed You are hurting yourselves ooooooo. Give up! It's of no use. All those claiming she's a snob, why won't she snob you? I would too. Eh, leave her alone. She's a snob and God is still blessing her. Only God knows the heart of men. Count your own blessings and thank God for other's so that God will keep blessing you! This is one way people block themselves from getting good things.

Na wa oooooo!! Why must every Nairaland thread end in tribalism angry You guys should stop this please. For those doubting the amout they are paying her, well, you may be right but that is not the issue. The fact is that out of everyone she was chosen to represent the brand. Why can't we all be happy for her without bitching.  angry It doesnt make a difference if she's ugly or she bleaches or she has ugly legs like some say. The company still picked her and not YOU!! Stop hating.

McDoe:

She used to be pretty looking. But age is telling on her seriously. On her choice as face of Nokia AFRICA, I thought there use to be a process of selection, or has it been changed?

McDoe, it's not the modelling competition NOKIA FACE OF AFRICA. She's becoming a face of the Nokia brand in Africa. It's more like an endorsement just like the Glo contract she had.

The year is almost coming to an end but the blessings seem to be pouring in non stop for Rita.

Just a few months after she became one of Globacom's ambassadors, olofofos are whispering that she has just been elected as the face of Nokia Africa and was paid over one million dollars for a 6 month contract.

Hear, ''Rita will be promoting Nokias new product which is Nokia N97 in Africa. There will soon be a press conference to announce it. Rita is really excited about this Nokia deal, the blessings are too much that's why it would be easy to count all of her teeth if you tried as she cant stop smiling''.

Congratulations Rita, our forefathers say ''he who eats alone suffers from diarrhoea''.
