Nigeria’s elite combat units are coming out of the shadows and taking the fight to the country’s enemies. In the past few months, there has been a noticeable rise in their combat activities across the country.
Special operations are usually clad in secrecy, for operational security (Opsec) reasons, and most battlefield activities do not find their way into the public domain.
It is that cloak of mystery, which makes them effective, and no country discloses information about its Special Forces, Nigeria inclusive.
Nigerian Navy SBS (NNSBS) during a training exercise. Nigeria continues to struggle with insecurity, claiming the lives of tens of thousands and displacing millions due to armed banditry, kidnapping, Boko Haram, and the Islamic State.
The West African country operates a multi-tiered special operations forces; with the Navy’s Special Boat Service (NNSBS) in Tier 1, the Army’s 72 Special Forces Battalion, and Air Force’ QRF “Panthers” in Tier 2 respectively, and by comparison, the Armed Forces Special Forces (AFSF) are the Tier 3 operators.
keep2silent: Yes half useful because its not useless, but it cannot defeat current threats to secure Nigeria, we remain at war for ever, unless we do big procurement of vehicles best-fit for purpose. Nigerian Army 12.7mm HMG announced by NAHQ as our official main weapon VS Bandit & ISWAP 12.7mm HMG exactly same main weapon, is a fooolish game that will never end.
RCWS long existed since half century when Bradley IFV prototype came 50 years ago, NA refuses to do right.
To shun away 25mm RCWS vehicle six-seater, betrays all of us citizens who entrust official power to Abuja privileged few Naija VIPs.
By drinking engine oil and talking about their sisters nudity....na question ooh...But are you alright?
WesternOligarch: This is actually how cultists are initiated Sha......Kemi may be mad but her sources are usually right.... problem is that Nigerians hate the truth.
That itself is a failure of systems in Nigeria. So we can safely say the FG has failed in securing Nigeria
iblawi: The people in the NW don't want peace abi na people in NE?
Everybody want peace in their surroundings but some criminal elements will always exist in every society. That's the same reason every society have police force or some form of security.
Under normal conditions, the police handles issues of banditry, kidnapping, even Groups like IPOB. They happen in a lot of countries and you won't see military around. We don't really need the army in most of these engagements but our story different. The Nigerian army is gradually becoming a police force.
Doesn't look too badly off. The starboard list is ONLY a couple of degrees but STILL....
As of now there are US, Japanese,Philipino, Indonesian and even Indian naval forces checking the Chinese in the SCS. A reliable commentator swears the latter lost an air battle with Taiwan a couple of months ago. All these platforms in a crowded space plus political tensions means ISHYT can go South anytime anyhow- what better way to make a point than to damage a sub with a UUV and proclaim;"who me?" How many of you think this is coincidence? Raise your hands !
After going through the Algerian pics and after getting over the shock effects i want to ask if we can just give them the titile Aare Onakakanfo gbogbo Africa!!! I'm still in shock though....We need to investigate if they are truly Africans
lionel4power: Hey is it true that Algeria has placed order for 24 Wing Loong II?
Middle East media are reporting about it but I haven't seen any solid proof.
And this looks like full force to you....I only blame the stupid incompetent SE Governors who are nothing more than charlatans. It seems we are cursed with bad leadership in the SE...We need a Wike or Amaechi style Governor in each of the SE states to curb this nonsense...UGM my arse
DubaiLandLord2: Unknown Gunmen Storm Onitsha In Full Force As People Hail Them.
DubaiLandLord: The Defence Headquarters on Sunday stated that a military chopper did not shoot boat passengers but “illegal oil bunkerers’” carrying refined oil products in the Bonny Island of Rivers State last Thursday.
Some Rivers boat operators last Thursday alleged that a military chopper opened fire on them while travelling from Port Harcourt to Bonny Island, injuring them in the process. They had claimed that the combat helicopter attacked their local wooden boat loaded with foodstuffs.
However, in a statement published on DHQ Facebook page, the Director, Defence Information, Benjamin Sawyerr, said that the injured persons were oil thieves.
The statement titled, ‘Re: Military Chopper Fires At Cargo Boat On Bonny River’, partly reads, “The Air Component of the Joint Task Force Operation Delta State received reports from ground troops who were on clearance operations but encountered resistance at the point of encounter.
“On receiving the report, a combat helicopter was dispatched to provide close air support mission along the Cawthorne Channel.
“The helicopter encountered an illegal oil bunkerers’ boat popularly called ‘Cotonou Boat’. The boat, which was being escorted by two speedboats, was suspected to be carrying illegally refined oil products in large drums along the Channel in the direction of OPDS patrol boats.
“On sighting the boat, warning shots were fired to dissuade the crew from hostile action. The crew fired back at the helicopter and the boat was engaged accordingly.
“The two speedboats detached from the convoy at high speed, leaving the ‘Cotonou Boat,’ which was neutralised.
“The helicopter later went after the two speedboats but was unable to track it. The suspects are still at large and a manhunt has been sent out to apprehend them.”
However, while the DHQ failed to post photos showing the “neutralised Cotonou Boat” or “illegally refined oil products in large drums” to substantiate its claim, photos sent by our Rivers State Correspondent, Dennis Naku, who visited the scene of the incident on Thursday and spoke with the victims, show that the passenger boats had food items, with blood splattered all over them.
When contacted via telephone on Monday morning, Sawyerr confirmed the DHQ statement to our correspondent, adding that the “Cotonou Boat” was sunk and there were no photos of the incident.
Of recent, the Nigerian Military has been accused of bombing innocent Nigerians, including soldiers, due to alleged miscalculations.
In April 2021, over 20 soldiers on ground were allegedly slain in Mainok, Borno State, when a Nigerian Air Force fighter jet responding to attacks on a military camp by Boko Haram insurgents bombed the military camp based on a wrong coordinate.
NAF spokesman, Edward Gabkwet, had said that the incident was under investigation.
See photos of the attacked Rivers passenger boats as forwarded by our correspondent who visited the scene:

You are so stupid that you don't know what a typo is if u see one...Another fool belittling African solutions!!! We have lots of u brain washed Africans who believe they cannot do anything by themselves unless Uncle Sam does it....Like your Brother in Aso Rock
GeneralFarouq: What I cannot believe is an African writing the word "write' as "right", He needn't waste his time engaging you too
I can't belive an African would right this...So i won't bother engaging you in a discussion
Jimi24: Nonsense. Barlow is an old, generally uneducated man now getting senile. He is looking for money. Boko Haram is not a force that anybody can defeat except the Nigerian Army. It is a self healing force that is astute at hibernating. Nigerian Army should and will finish their jobs.
Truthshots2: People in the southeast have this incredible misconception that the southsouth belongs to them. Some fools like beegeagle seem to believe that the southsouth is a base for southeastern militancy. You guys need to stop linking us southsouth to the southeast, we are two different peoples in two different regions. When you are talking about the southeast, there is no need to include the Southsouth in that talk !
The southsouth is a region in it's own right, not a property belonging to the southeast or to any other region.
It is very irritating to constantly see people from other regions claiming to speak for the southsouth as if the southsouth was a conquered people ! We are not a conquered people !
Blueelf: We don;t have SF and I have said it times without number on other threads. Those guys masquerading as SF after 3 - 4 months "rush rush" training are not SF. SF soldiers take at least 6 - 9 months to train (at least because in some countries, it takes 2 years). Besides, our SF are poorly funded (only the NAF tries in this regard) but the NA SF is an eyesore.
Sizzorkay: Nothing surprising about it. we gotta ask ourselves why some Nigerians should care about cops being killed or govt buildings getting burnt to the ground. When those govts barely function, provides zero basic services for the people, then what incentive does the people have to protect officials they see as corrupt embezzlers who could care less about the people. your average Nigerian doesn't respect the police, why should they, all they see are criminals in uniform who chase cars to demand for bribes. If the govt is responsive to the needs of the people and actually provide basic services, the people will protect them and support them, but mostly in rural areas, that's not the case. So why are we surprised seeing residents welcoming terrorists etc.
Everything needed for this is already available in-house...
SuperSixSeven: The only feasible solution i see in this current situation would be to build a Commando Force as the spear tip of the NA - a force that really earns it special forces status modeled similar to the Afghan Army Commandos. This takes years and a significant investment in training and equipment but anyway we cannot except this war to end soon. For training and mission planning we would of course need foreign assistance from western allies and even financial support to acquire state of the equipment.
I mentioned it earlier and some people shut me up....This is the time for this administration to bury their pride and whatever shame might come and return Eeben Barlow and crew back to Nigeria...A word is enough for the wise!!!
kabe1: We need PMCs from South-Africa, security has gone completely out of hand.
We need to bury our heads in the sand, and do the right thing.
Nothing is stable, I don't support giving the military more money, we should have a separate agency which is responsible for procurement and servicing of military equipment in the open.
The military has proven to be very incompetent.
We are just like the Iraqi army, but at least Iraq army have the feared Golden Dawn Division (Special Forces unit).
In Nigeria we had 72 MSF, we had AFSF effective units that were shut down because of politics and utter foolishness.
Paramount launches N-Raven long range swarming UAV system
Written by defenceWeb -22nd Feb 2021
Paramount Advanced Technologies (PAT) has launched a long-range precision strike swarming unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system called N-Raven.
Announced during the IDEX trade show in the United Arab Emirates on 22 February, Paramount said the N-Raven family of autonomous, multi-mission aerial vehicles featuring next generation ‘swarm’ technologies to accomplish numerous missions with pinpoint precision.
The N-Raven family has been designed for technology transfer and portable manufacture from within partner countries, the company said. “In doing so, the N-Raven addresses a myriad of mission requirements, including ‘future warfighter engagements’ where intelligent ‘swarming technologies’ combined with multiple munition loitering and attack operations have been proven to ensure mission survivability.”
Operational units can launch the N-Raven UAV from multiple land-based, naval, and airborne platforms. The UAVs can strike both static and moving targets.
The 41 kg N-Raven has a cruise speed of approximately 180 km/hr and a loitering endurance time of approximately two hours. N-Raven swarm loitering munitions offer a variety of sensors with each being capable of carrying a 10–15 kg payloads up to a range of 250 km.
The system provides detection, identification, location, and reportage (DILR) against various targets.
“Equivalent to positioning multiple personnel on the ground in often austere, high-risk environments, the N-Raven is designed to saturate an area with Electro-Optical/Infra-Red (EO/IR), Semi-Active Laser sensor-driven target identification and tracking technologies to provide a rapid, data-rich picture of activity,” Paramount said.
A field simulator is optionally available which connects to the system’s control unit, allowing the N-Raven crew to rehearse each mission before launch. The UAV’s recording capabilities allow for a full debrief and ensure a positive learning curve for the end-user’s personnel.
Paramount said it developed the N-Raven as a robust yet cost-effective technology solution, utilising proven commercial components and experience gained from the company’s long legacy in the development of UAV systems, including the Meteorite.
Lee Connelly, CEO of Paramount Advanced technologies, stated, “We continue to research, design and innovate new technologies that remove military personnel from the front lines, minimise collateral damage and exposure of friendly forces. At the same time providing surveillance and engagement support, and helping armed forces around the world garner greater intelligence and mission success.
“We are accordingly very excited to launch the N-Raven unmanned aerial vehicle at IDEX, and showcase its diverse capabilities in addressing the battlefield challenges of 2021 and beyond”.
