Mental issues, yes but not poverty. A thousand eyes cannot equal a mother's pair of eyes. Some parents will give their child to stay with not because they are poor but may want the child to grow in a different environment. My girl's parents are not in anyway poor. That is why returning her this Xmas is not an issue to me but she has to complete this term. Nothing can be fairer than that.
Inability to provide adequate care and nurturing caused by extreme poverty is actually one of the major reasons why parents give up their kids for adoption. These actions are taken without sentiments but with the best interest of the child at heart. There are of course other reasons like I stated earlier.

And I am speaking in general terms and not specific to your case, there will always be outliers.

We can officially close the thread now. It has been an interesting one although some posts were misunderstood.

No child deserves to be taken away from the parents in all fairness.
I don't quite agree with the emboldened though. Some kids deserve to be taken away from their parents for varying reasons and that's why we have foster homes and legalized adoption process globally.

Reasons could be poverty, mental and health issues, abuses, instability in homes or cases where mothers willingly give up their children for adoption for no particular reason.

It's all about where a child will get the best care and it doesn't necessarily have to be with the parents.

something else we are not taking into consideration regarding this discussion is cultural and geographical differences.

Labour is not cheap and readily available in the west, so those who live here do everything ourselves. The hubby's are more hands on and we find ways to make life easier for us, however in Nigeria there are more hands available, be it relatives and house helps and so they get to do most of the housework

I have a 12 year old too and she cannot carry a bucket of water talk less of wash a car and that is because there is no need to. So if she comes to your house, she will cry 24/7 grin
But I see where you are coming from because your daughter is able to do it, so you will expect any 12 year old to do it and you genuinely mean no harm.

I will be honest here and say that Nigeria life doesn't make it easy. i wash my car probably 8 times a year here why the cars in Nigeria have to be cleaned everyday, and everything in Nigeria takes that much more effort to do
I havent got a problem with having house-helps, but not kids and for them to be treated fairly and well as they are human beings too.
fair points! And it affects everything else

In the UK, I spend hours loosening and washing my hair before going to make it, something I deeply hate to do but in Naija, I would not even dream of loosening one strand talkless of touching the whole braids. Not when mama Emeka's salon outside my house will loosen and wash the dirty stinking hair tongue for N500 pere (just over a pound shocked shocked). But the minimum wage in both countries also differ greatly, so there is some balance at the end of the day.

I had visions of the school that baby posted up there
Fair enough
I understand the not connecting - you were busy counting sales money of yesterday tongue

I know there is a lot of misinformation on NL but where one is personally affected, one has to take extra steps to research further. The same phobia mothers on the pregnancy thread used to have about going to public hospitals for ANC and immunization, thank God for onegai and co now educating us on why government hospitals might actually be the best bet for these services.

If I remember rightly, Lagos State converted all its school to millennium school during Fashola's time. Some things are generally not as portrayed here. Outliers are made to look like the norm.

@glossy quick question
I didn't realise that there are public boarding schools. I thought that they were all day schools.
Are these in Lagos?
Do you pay for boarding or is it free?
Thanks
Enough tearoses

Lagos State Government colleges have boarding facilities - Kanko(hope I spelt right) and a host of others are primarily boarding schools. Even Federal government colleges are classified as publics secondary schools naa

It's not free oo at least in my days

Morning All, its my birthday 2day.... Yippee..... This time last yr I got the most fantastic bday pressie from God and i didn't know.

Went to see a Dr cos i had some rashes all over my body and he told me it was an allergic reaction and prescribed Antihistamines for it.... Hmmmmm.

The alagbos in my hse asked me to rub bitter leaf water on my body and my cuzins recommended that i drank it to wash out whatever it is i was reacting to. I was desperate to get over the episode cos of the itchiness so I considered drinking the bitter leaf water.

Just before i drank it, I decided to do a PT( i wasn't TTC'n but didn't mind getting preg) Lo and behold i got a BFP and dat was d cause of the reaction. Thank God i didn't drink the bitter leaf water grin.

I pray to God for anoda fantastic pressie dis yr and pray that God answers all TTC with their BFPs and May all pushing mama's have a safe delivery.

Some1 pls gimme a bday mate.

Wishing ya'all a fab day

grin grin grin na wa o

OP, as much as I'll say it's not easy dealing with children, it's also not good to go overboard in correcting them. Your wife and yourself sound like two extreme personalities so I am sure she is also frustrated that you are not helping out in correcting and disciplining the kids. Both of you have to make adjustment and find a common ground.

Pls call her and tell her you are willing to be more hands on with the kids while also reminding her of the need for her to chill with them. The discussion won't yield any fruit if you make her believe she is the only one at fault.

EducationRe: PICS Look At What We Killed In Our Hostel by Kimoni: 8:40am On Nov 25, 2015
ValerianSteel:
Killers.

What's this craze of Nigerians killing anything they see?

How does this precious animal pose a threat to those that killed it?

They killed it plus destroyed the future of its eggs.

There's a serious threat against animals in this country, every unidentifiable creeping, crawling, flying creature is up for kill,it's a very barbaric act that needs to be stopped. The other day it was snake,a few months back,a rare species of ocelot was murdered, today, this is killed and it's yet to be laid eggs destroyed as well.

We need a serious Animal Protection/Conservation Authority to handle this growing menace.Nigerians are endangering many animals on daily basis with how they kill them.
The initiative has to start from a higher authority. Government in conjunction with NGOs and other interested organizations. Not much can be achieved by the masses on their own. There has to be a structure and process attached to animal conservation.

We'll get there! Hopefully

in some families, success= curse and that is probably why the successful sister is staying away.

for all one knows, she might not even be as well off as her foes are imagining.
My thots exactly. Just because she is a pharmacist does not mean she is now "Dangote".

OP, pls call your sister and speak with her yourself. And don't carry this attitude in your discussion. You never know what she might also be passing through.
FamilyRe: This Is What My House Help Did To Me by Kimoni: 8:15am On Nov 25, 2015
@favoredgal - yeah it's a big risk but I try to do all the necessary checks and take maximum precautions. Not to talk of the prayers for guidance. But have you also seen videos of abuses at the crèche - there is this spiral video of a younger boy caught by CCTV punching and kicking a baby. Very gross to watch.

In all, one just has to choose the most comfortable and convenient option and make it work for you. Whichever option chosen, there are pros and cons attached.
FamilyRe: This Is What My House Help Did To Me by Kimoni: 8:06am On Nov 25, 2015

Don't get me wrong I'm not passing any judgement o! I'm extremely fortunate to have my mom, my dad and my husbands family close to me

If I didn't however, she will be in crèche already and I will pay for 'after school' all near my office, that way we go and come back together. She is starting school in jan when baby no 2 comes and that's my plan by God's grace

Before I conceived her it was a roller coaster ride of tears, fears and prayers. Can't take any chances
Lol...I was asking just for curiosity sake really though I also wanted to establish that you were just lucky to have your support system around, many aren't that fortunate.

I tried the crèche option at a point but it didn't work. I was sometimes required to close late or travel like the OP, so I was left with little or no choice than to hire an experienced help. Even when I closed early, subjecting my infant to long hours of traffic daily was not a good choice for moi.

In all, that's why mothers are gold. It's a very trying period everywhere on earth for mothers with infants and it becomes even more difficult when you have to juggle that role with a career. The good thing is, it's just a phase that would pass away before we even realise.

We'll all get to that stage when all the kids would be out of the house either in boarding schools, universities or married. Then the second round of honeymoon with our hubbies will commence.

Everything in life is a phase that we must embrace and overcome as they come.

[size=4pt]Good morning favoredgal, did you just say Atinuke is on the way?? smiley

Yes you can, but you have to take every single powder. Why dont you break it into tiny sizes and swallow. Or better still take it at night, you are less likely to vomit then. You can also ditch pregnacare and use all the components separately eg folic acid, bcomplex, vit c etc. You can also wrap the pregnacare in eba/ any swallow. You can take it with juice too or even ogi.
Pele. This phase will soon pass. Hold on

Points has been made and lessons learnt on this issue. Inasmuch as I don't want to prolong issues on this thread, I want more clarification on this "professional nanny" of a thing.

Please what make them professional? Do they undergo training as done in the US? How can we engage them? Pls don't tell me OLX.

I need to know and maybe one or two people here. Genuine info & not usual NL bashing.
Lol...it's not a formal training most times although I have seen one or two institutions that say they offer professional nanny trainings but I wasn't convinced about them.

The professional training in Nigeris is more about experience i.e someone who has worked previously with kids. The interview questions asked before she starts will bring it to light if she/he is truly experienced and loves the job or at least can tolerate kids. In other cases, they could also be mothers/widows who need to earn some income by taking care of other people's kids.

See, I kept laughing at her ignorance. Maybe she wants me to start paying for malpractice too. I did my research before putting her there.

She spoke about 'closing early and be useful'.... Chai... If 3.30 is close early, then.... I reserve my comment. You can tell the IQ of a person from their posts.

And d poster that spoke about her dropping my son at school. My boy rather goes to school very early so that she's in school too before 7.30.

I ignored unreasonable comments like hers, acidosis' and of course madam of senseless posters'.

I have picked the very useful ones and moved on.

You are an FCA, wow. I doubt the likes of her know what that means... you are an achiever.

Thanks Ojugunrege. You were once in my shoes.
There is nothing wrong with public schools if that is what you can afford. I know thousands of people who passed through public schools and are outstanding in their respective fields today, at least Lagos I know.

Pls hire an adult henceforth, someone who is old enough to face you and negotiate her terms. Source them from an agency with a good reputation amongst your friends or colleagues and get someone who is happy doing the job and not forced to work.

Like Nihilist said, bringing in a child from her poor parents to a better environment is supposed to be a win-win situation for both the adopted and biological mothers, especially in a country with a high inequality index like Nigeria; unfortunately, this privilege has been abused by many and it is now easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a family to convince the world they are indeed treating these wards right. But that doesn't mean there are no success stories, of course there are. It's just a case of too many bad eggs...

If you are convinced yourself within you that you treated her right, pls move on and learn from this experience. Nobody can pass the guilty verdict on you if you indeed treated her right.

Your daughter appears smarter than you are, she knows your weaknesses and is able to adequately leverage on it to achieve her objective while you, as mother and adult do not even recognize your child, how much more knowing what she is capable of.

Why would you keep something as grievous as a family rape to yourself just because you don't want to scatter the family? Which mother does that undecided And why will your daughter get you to promise not to tell her dad she got pregnant and aborted and you will also succumb undecided Didn't you say she was raped?

Infact, the more I break this story into pieces, the more convinced I am it's a fake story. Bye blogger!
