ikwerre people have told you they are not Igbos. Let them be. If you can go into ikwerre land especially obioakpor and sit among them to tell them that they are Igbos to their faces rather than online muses, come back here and give your testimony. I think its for the Ikwerre people to go and sort out which Ikwerre is Igbo and which Ikwerre isnt Igbo. If an Ikwerre man like former Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi can come out on national tv to tell everyone that he is an Igbo man. If an Ikwerre man and Secretary General of Ohanaeze, Uche Okwukwu, tells the world he is a proud Igbo man, and If well known Ikwerres in the entertainment industry like Duncan Okechukwu(Duncan Mighty), Monalisa Chinda and Tonto Dike can all say they are Igbos then it is for the Ikwerre's to point out which Ikwerre is Igbo and which isnt.

You can't determine for Ikwerres or any group of people what their identity should be, this is arrogance taken too far.



The Igbos- Ikwerres relationship have similarities in all parts of the world.

Have you seen Idomas coming online to always insist that Igedes are Idomas?

Have you seen Kanuris always coming online to insist that Mangawa are Kanuris?

How many times do you see Yorubas coming online to insist that Ogori-Mangogos must accept the Yoruba ethnic tag?

Do Ijaws always come online to claim Ogbia must accept Ijaw identity?

All these people decide for themselves where they belong and most easily accept the ethnic affiliations voluntarily with a minority sub-groups claiming otherwise.

I have seen one of my ex-students whose Surname is Ogunmola and whose family speak Yoruba Language naturally without learning it but said they aren't Yoruba and also not Ebira but simply on their own as Ogori-Mangogo.

In other words, if the Ngwa man chooses himself as Ngwa and not Igbo, he stops being Igbo. If the Nsukka man decides to identify as Nsukka and not Igbo, he stops being Igbo. Any community can choose when and when not to be Igbo just by rejecting being Igbo.

If my community rejects being Igbo and identify as Japanese, everyone should respect their right to be Japanese. Lol

It will not be strange because even though we think Ikwerre is Igbo, they don;t think they are. So, such association is meant to unite both sides that are not united at the moment. Even if Ikwerres agree to be Igbo, being Igbo will come naturally to them because they've drifted for too long. I'm neither referring to culture or traditional but more with socialization.

If being Igbo is all about who sees himself as Igbo and who does not, then what it means that anybody can be Igbo any time they want, and stop being Igbo any time they also want.

What it means is that an Hausa man from Kano can get up one day and say he now sees himself as Igbo, therefore he must be, because he sees himself as one. It also means that an Igbo man from Imo can get up one day and decide he is now Yoruba as sees he now sees himself as one.

In essence, what you see your self as is what you are. If I see myself as Japanese, then thats what I am.

Is that really where Nigeria's problem started from? The Jos massacre of 1945, the Kano killings of 1953, violence in the Western Region 1962, the census crisis of 1964, operation wetie of 1965 to mention but a few.

He is also a member of Association of Ikwerre people with Igbo kindred. If Ikwerre is Igbo, will it not be ridiculous that such association exists? Like having association of Ibadan people with Yoruba kindred , or the Association of Nnewi people with Igbo Kindred.

So what is the difference between someone from Umuahia and some from Diobu in Ikwerre? They both speak Igbo and have Igbo surnames. If the only difference is denial then what it means that tribe based on acceptance or denial. In other words, if the Umuahia people decide tomorrow that they are not Igbo, then that means they are not. If the Ngwa man of Abia, the Nsukka man of Enugu, the Ezza man of Ebonyi all decide that they are not Igbo, then they are not because the only thing that separates them from Ikwerre is denial.

Being Igbo is not based on denial or acceptance, its all about your ancestral language and ancestral surname. Ikwerre people are just as Igbo as anybody else.

Somebody speaks Igbo as his ancestral language and has an Igbo surname. The person turns around and says he is not Igbo. When you ask him why he is not Igbo, he will say that his ancestors migrated from Bini, Igala, Nupe etc. When you ask him, "why are you not claiming to be Bini, Igala or Nupe", he will say nothing. When you ask how come his ancestors dropped their language and surnames and adopted Igbo, he will say nothing

When you ask him why his Bini, Igala or Nupe ancestors chose to give the place the settled Igbo names, he has no answer.

I laugh when Ikwerres say they are a 'distinct ethnic group". How can you be distinct when it is Igbo you are speaking and have Igbo surnames? What is there to differentiate you from someone from Umuahia?

When you look well you find out that all the denial is just based on economic and political considerations.
