You dont need ten years to transform a state if you are judiciously using the available funds for its purpose. It only takes a non corrupt mind to do justice
The Governor Akwa Ibom State has opened the eyes of a lot of Nigerians to the con, some of his colleagues deploy in other to jettison genuine development and agitation all in the name of guaranteeing the Governor's fixed deducted amount monthly. The Governor of Akwa Ibom State went as far as saying he was prepared to pay N50,000 Naira to the lowest paid worker in his state. It shows the level of greed permeating within confines of this gentlemen's club, many of these selfish men are Governors for self aggrandizement. They are the one killing the country.

Twy you have said it all. Children are brought up to give unquestioning respect to elders and chieftains, even siblings who may only be 5 years older. Age and position suddenly become  tools for possible manipulation and oppression.
The age thing is a psychological bondage in the Nigerian psyche. Elders can do no wrong, in Yoruba there is an adage " omo de to ba mowo we a ba agba jeun" literally meaning in English “if a kid knows how to wash his hands properly he/she would eat with the elders from the same bowl”. Obviously a kid would not start eating the meat in the soup until the elder gives him/her the green light

Can this Governor Junketing all over the place, and I am talking of the Oshun State Governor who has less than N200 Million left after paying the minimum rate, stop travelling abroad. I know tickets are not cheap, and I can bet my last kobo if he ever travels economy class, this kind of travelling expenses not only contribute towards the abysmal pauperization of the people and the populace, it also smacks of wholesome negligence, wastage, abandonment and extreme absenteeism to say the least.

The maladministration in Oshun State is becoming distasteful even to party faithful, I hope light would be seen at the end of the tunnel that would justify all these junketing. Many people are watching what the Governor is doing with an eagle eye; there would be no room for him to manoeuvre if and when the wheat is separated from the chaffs I sincerely hope he knows what he is doing. I pray Aregbesola’s reign in Oshun State would not be another business as usual celebration of Mediocrity already he seems and I may be wrong to be swaying towards mediocrity.

Fani Kayode should have made his dough from the Nigeria state as usual, I just hope he has not spend it all on that Igbo girl friend of his, looking at a crystal ball I can conveniently say his career in politics is effectively over. If he has not invested wisely by the time he is IBB's age he would be dead broke I can assure you that.

There is a fundermental problem with policing in Nigeria. How does operations sometimes last over one hour in some instances and yet the culprits get away without been apprenhed. There needs to be an overhaul of the system. Mr. President Hafiz Rigim sitting his arse in Abuja and policing the whole nation is not working. The State CP are more or less sitting ducks and cannon fodders, their men are worst than sittings ducks, the whole policing is in disarray.

Is "abject poverty" likely to be solved in just 4 or 8 years? How much did you actually expect to get done in that period of time? Rome wasn't built in a day as they say.

Truth be told, there is really only so much a governor can really do to solve a problem like poverty.
Abject poverty can be solved if those Governors we keep on harping about commute the funds available to them to the real purpose of which is local level infrastructural development which in itself would enhance and improve the human depravation so common in our rural areas and even in our cities. Poverty alleviation through mechanised farming should be encouraged and be the first bus stop for any Governor who is not ingenious enough.

I know you are a die hard ACN supporter, you are the type of people this thread is actually targeting, blind loyalty yet nothing to show. In the said ‘programme’ I could not miss the clearly obvious wet and green terrain of Edo State, there is enough rain in that state than meet the eyes?

Why those poor malnourished people are not engage in commercial farming I don’t understand? I don’t get it, what is ACN’s ultimate objective, I get the feeling and impression the Governors just trawl along on a daily basis, they are not focus, they have no comprehensive plans for their various states and communities which they should painstakingly follow to the letter, my assumptions and believe is some of this Governors, each day just wake up and report to their various offices not too sure what would bequeath them at the end of the day, it is like they are on auto-tune, zombies, we need more focal people who would have a sense of purpose and urgency.

Both ACN and PDP have failed or are failing the states in the SW, by 2015 we should be looking for a third way, rather than consolidating mediocrity. undecided

Now you are asking good questions. Notice I said Senate(the Nigerian people)

If Nigeria was truly practicing federalism and representative democracy, changing the constitution to institute state police will be the up to the Senate, but in Nigeria with our almost one party system. The Senate represents a small elite mostly from the same party. So there you are.
As to state paying civil servants or funding their operations you know the reasons for that, you are definitely not ignorant of the cap in hand state allocation system, resource control, right to tax and collect revenue including Port ( sea, land and air) right to establish power stations and other revenue generating utilities, right to determine state wages based on state income and revenue.

Listed above are just a few of the rights fully or Partially denied the states by the FG, it is not easy to run, budget, and plan your government with that kind of handicap. Do not forget that the power to maintain law order and appoint or hire law enforcement officers( a major component of economic development) also resides with the FG.

So, that is the situation my bro.  The same problem exist between the states and LG too, this centralized control enforced by our past military mis-adventurers should have been jettisoned, but your elites are too busy making money from the chaos to bother.

They will not give up easily. That is why I will never support non-radical leaders in Nigeria.
All what you are saying is theoretical and disjointed it would probably get lost in translation  in Nigeria, we have seen a 2-1 in English who cannot speak English how do you expect our law officers and Senate  members to know the true meaning of 'federalism', as erudite as I am,  I am at loss with your argument how much men who spend the bulk of their time 'peppersouping' and 'big stouting' to borrow Obahiagbon's words.  undecided
Politics › Re: Re- State Police Contradiction Extraordinary And Plenipotentiary by KnowAll(op): 7:29pm On Aug 25, 2011
Very True, Apart from Lagos no other state can produce their own revenue internally. "They are nearly all entirely dependent on federally collected revenue for their stipends and overheads. At the end, they have nothing to spend on development. In effect, The creation of more states now could be read as underwriting an asset transfer from servicing the development needs of the country to funding the tastes of an add-on new elite in the beneficiary territories." Basically, many states in Nigeria are not meant to be states. They have no means of generating revenue and the allocation they receive are mostly spent on salaries living little to nothing for development or for a police force. Does Nigeria really need 36 states?

I know I'm now trolling but If a state like Ebonyi spends 70% [example] of her budget in salaries why can she merge with Enugu? Now Instead of only receiving 30% of the budget for development she will now receive 100% of the budget since they have no governor or civil servants to pay. But of course since she is now merge with Enugu she will probably have to share some of her exciting allocations with enugu. So at the end of the day Enugu may receive 30% more to her budget while the "ebonyi area" receive 70% of the former state Ebonyi's allocation. Every one wins and there is less bureaucracy and a higher budget to fund development such as roads, schools or even a police force.

Just my 2 Kobo
I 'gbadun'(enjoy literary and support) that comment, it is not easy to convince to KnowALL but on this occasion u sure hit the nail on the head. kudos cool
Politics › Re: Re- State Police Contradiction Extraordinary And Plenipotentiary by KnowAll(op): 7:10pm On Aug 25, 2011
I already addressed that concern. That was the point of my first post.

Again, if you remove state police command and control from under the FG, it is reasonable to expect that the current funding or budget allocation for them will follow them to their states, cities or LG. Nor be so?
But we still have Federal Police, why would the Feds cut her operation and give it to the states, the states are the ones clamouring for it, it is almost a do or die thing for some states yet they cannot pay their civil servants the difference between the current minimum rate and the new rate of N18,000.00. huh
Politics › Re: Re- State Police Contradiction Extraordinary And Plenipotentiary by KnowAll(op): 6:58pm On Aug 25, 2011
There is no need to banish federal police sir!

The American system we practice for the most part has a strong Federal police and law enforcement arm  (FBI, DEA, US marshals and others) while maintaining a strong and effective city, county and in many cases small state police marshals -all independent of the federal and existing together

Let us avoid that False Dichotomy. Both can exist together, one should not kill the other.
That is not the issue on this thread, the point is where are the states going to get the funding from. Oshun State for example has only N200 million left after paying the minimum wage of N18,000.00. abi the Governor dey lie  undecided

I'm sure you can come up with a better argument against state police. This one is weak shiiiit. Sorry

If The senate(Nigerian people) can take state police control and responsibilities away from the FG, it is only reasonable to assume that the current budgetary allocation for them will go to the state too.

In any case, true federalism demands that state police and more money go to the state. End of story.

I actually prefer local government police or city police. State police is not a strong enough reform for me
There is no reasons why Federal Police should be banish because most Federal States not ALL has both State and Federal Police. If a state cannot top up the pay of their current civil servant how on earth can they fund a Police force. They should just drop the idea, they cannot pay probably N5000.00 more a month to their current civil servants and yet they are talking of state police. Do you what know what the internal generated revenue of many of these States are, and you are talking of true Federalism, 95% of the states at the moment cannot bring home the revenue they are presently collecting from the feds.

T
hank goodness Ibadan was the seat of then western regional government in Nigeria and still the capital of Oyo State. It does not take a genius to decipher what would have become the state of town of Lagos if not for federal capital. A good look at Abeokwuta should tell the whole truthful story.
Federal presence has being absent  in Lagos for 22 years, if during that period Lagos had bad administrators that place would have being un-liveable. Ogun and Oyo State had bad administrators in the last 12 years, if we had someone like Awolowo ruling Oyo State who made Lagos play second fiddle to Ibadan in the early days, all what Lagos had Ibadan had. Ibadan was a cutting edge city for anything modernity in those days. You name it, stadia, first TV Stations, CBD with a cluster of HIGH RISE all built by Awolowo, it would take a miracle to reverse the decadence that have hit that city after more than 30 years of neglect.

@OP

The reason, among others, is individuals such as you who waste bandwidth in praises of Fashola who is the governor of town which served as the seat of federal government of Nigeria.
I am a big anti Fashola guy, and the only reason I do that is I want him to improve on the 35% I have given him, one thing I know thus, they are listening Government in Lagos, the Makoko waterside that I criticise severely some months ago is about to be cleared off. Secondly that argument that Lagos was once a Federal Capital does not wash any more, if we had a useless Governor in Lagos State, Lagos would be locked down by and probably would have been the most gridlocked city in the world. Thank God for Fashola's initiative and foresight. The Feds have not invested a penny in that city since IBB ran for his dear life in 1991.

The States cannot pay the minimum wage of N18,000.00 yet they are clamouring for State Police, where would the money to pay, train and equip the state police come from, when most of the States are saying paying the difference between the current minimum rate and the new minimum rate of N18,000.00 would make them broke. In fact Osun State went as far as given us figures, insisting that only N200 million would be left in the coffer of the state if  they pay N18,000.00 minimum rate.

Railways: The Nigerian Railway Act forbids private individuals and companies from operating any form of rail transport and vests all control in the hands of the Nigerian Railways Authority, a moribund, corrupt and generally under-performing authority.
Lagos state is building a form of rail transport, so your assertion the FG has an exclusive right to that purvey is wrong.

No it does not mean that, both set of countries have different priorities. Gaddafi made it a cardinal developmental point, but our recent leaders have a different view since they can always buy generators and dig bore holes behind their houses. When I was growing up all the houses I lived between 1970 and 1975 in Kano City had hot water tubs and light was constant, so the pains we have today are negligence of our recent crops of leaders starting from IBB obviously they had a different priority.

The technology behind the supply of these basic necessities of life is about 300 years old, in case of water and about 200 years old in case of electricity. The absence of this services in Nigeria is an indictment on our leaders, Our leaders today have been emboldened in recent times when compared with what happened in the early days of our Republic, when 10%centers was the golden rule to outright theft where contracts going into billion of dollars would be awarded without an iota or a grain of sand shifted to the site.

This trend began with IBB sorry to say. If Félix Houphouët Boigny
of Cote de Voire can wake up one day and build the largest church in the world, I see no reasons why our Government cannot wake up one week and supply her citizens with these basic services. However this comes at a price, if they provide this service it would hit the ‘projected revenue stream’ or mis-appropriated revenue our leaders have pencilled down for themselves over a 4 year period.

The fact is electricity and water is not a priority in Nigeria, if it were, you would have it tomorrow.

Why Do We Glorify Mediocrity In Nigeria

I watched the program on how Edo Girls are lured into prostitution in Europe and what I saw of Benin City and Edo State in general has a lot to be desired. I am not too sure whether my eyes have become accustomed to more sane pictures and flicks of develop cities around that I found the pictures and stream of Benin and Edo State miserable, unpalatable and really  backwardly.  I thought to myself the girls are probably running away from abject poverty, environmental degradation and penury.

There was a scene where they went to a village, the roads where awful, the lady showing the journalist around said contract for the road has being awarded but the Chairman of the LG had absconded with the money, the people in the village looked dreary, gaunt and unhealthy in their mud houses.

So all this news that Adam Oshiomole is an action Governor where is that coming from now, let us stop praising mediocrity. Our Governors have being abroad and they see how those societies are set up, they should copy good things not that sham they keep on feeding us with.

How did he graduate? this is the question we should be asking, his school should also withdraw his certificate.
The creditability of the school he got the certificate from plus those lecturers in the department has to be questioned. But then the guy might have suffered something similar to ‘stage fright’ that is he just froze when he was interviewed thereby compounding his problems.
