CultureRe: How Are You - Is It A Rude Form Of Greeting? by kokoye(op): 1:54pm On May 15, 2013
A few years ago, some lady from another African country responded to my greeting by saying "Are you behaving yourself?"

I was surprised and asked why she asked that..since we were not that close and i'd never 'misbehaved' in front of her. She said it was just a simple form of greeting. I jokingly told her not to greet typical Nigerians like that next time cos they might not take it lightly. LOL

I think it's just english language.

what about 'how do you do?' ..do you respond with a slap? grin

Ogas at the top!!

What our culture will do to us..

We wont take advice from a younger person...an advice that may save our lives

We wont take a job simply because the director is young enough to be our child

We wont accept things from a leftie

We borrow money to do funeral for the dead...we didnt even care about them when alive

Our leaders commit atrocities and we cant call them out.

....Maybe we need to put some part of this culture in check
CultureRe: How Are You - Is It A Rude Form Of Greeting? by kokoye(op): 6:02pm On May 14, 2013
Wow...these reponses are very revealing,

I said 'Good morning, how are you' to an obviously younger guy (his eldest brother calls me 'uncle') in church 2 days ago and he didnt answer me.

So obviously, even younger Nigerians take offense. Has nothing to do with age..but culture.

Na wah.

blackmale: then if you re from yoruba as you ve said,, then am sure you will not greet your uncle with'' BA WO NI''.... or your older brother, i guess they wont like tht from you

^^^

Maybe you need to calm down.

I dont go around asking people how they are (even though there's nothing wrong with it).

Is there anything wrong with "Hi, how are you"...or "good morning, how are you?"

It has nothing to do with culture..it is just the 'Oga at the top' mentality like someone said earlier.

I dont know what tribe you are from what in yoruba, 'how are you' is the exact same thing as 'bawoni o' - i bet you noone takes offence at 'bawoni'.

Think about it.

CultureHow Are You - Is It A Rude Form Of Greeting? by kokoye(op): 2:09pm On May 14, 2013
I noticed our people dont take the greeting "how are you" very nicely. When you greet them and say "how are you", most would feel you are being disrespectful. I have experienced this several times - someone actually told me he wasnt a kid when I greeted him that way...and a few did not even respond.

When I say 'how are you' to someone, I'm just checking on them..and I expect the same kind of greeting in return.

Am I alone in this ...and why do you think 'our' people feel disrespected with such a greeting?

- Men dont have mentural period issues

- Men can work very late hours

- Men tend to have more control their emotions

- Most women cant stand female bosses...men dont care

...etc....

Blame the 'system'

Why is it so easy for ladies to forgive infidelity ..is it because they cant do without men ..or they feel incomplete without one?
