miisy: ... BUT, I STILL LOVE HIM! (Written by Oyekunle Lizzy Oyebola)
(Auntie Nancy offers Chloe a neatly peeled orange on a small saucer but the latter collects it sharply and drops it on the stool beside her with a bang)
AUNTIE NANCY: (Frowns) What is wrong this time sister? You need more money or your CGPA dropped from 4.9 to 4.89?...which one o, my worry worry baby sis?
CHLOE: (Sighs) Its Kelvin sis... Its Kelvin
AUNTIE: (Eats her orange) What about him this time?
CHLOE: (Sobs) January 12th, Kelvin said I looked like a frog without any apology and he was not interested in me anymore. I begged him and he said he would manage to go on.
AUNTIE: (Looks aghast as she drops the orange) What!
CHLOE: January ended well until February 14 when he called to tell me he doesn't have a val gift for me because its an anniversary for lovers and he doesn't feel he had ever loved me. He dropped the call and I called back to tell him to forget about any gift and let us continue our love!
AUNTIE: (Shakes her head) Hmmmm
CHLOE: On March 15, my birthday, I decided to celebrate with my friends in the department and invited him. About an hour to the celebration, I called to ask about his whereabouts, he said he wasn't going to attend because he learnt that I invited some guys to the get together. He said he can't stand other guys talking about me and until I ordered all guys to go would he come.
AUNTIE: (Shaking her legs seriously, her lips pursed) And you did?
CHLOE: (Holds her head in her hands) Of course I did! I had to do all to keep my man! Now, I have lost all my male friends
AUNTIE: (Nods vigorously and smiles, her lips shaking) Continue
CHLOE: April 24, we met inside a bank premises. He was with his female friend. I smiled and rushed to greet him but he walked past me. I was embarrassed. I called him when I....
AUNTIE: (Pulls at her skirt) You still called?.... Ah!
CHLOE: (Sobs) Yes auntie, I did! He said he was sorry but that he was just embarrassed at the way I was dressed. But auntie, I was wearing the same cloth I wore the day he proposed to me. The same dress he had admired greatly
AUNTIE: (Shakes her head still) Hmmm, so exactly what has he done today June 23rd?
CHLOE: (Starts to cry heavily, pulling at her silky hair) If not because I am sure he is God’s will for me. If not because I am sure he is God’s will for my life and that this is just happening as a storm that I know it will surely pass, if not because....
AUNTIE: (Hisses silently, still shaking her head) What did he do now?... C'est fini!
CHLOE: (unbuttons her blouse and turns her back to her aunt) He beat me to stupor and threw me out of his house!
AUNTIE: (Stands up slowly) Ah!... The Lord my God!... The Lord my Lord!... Ah! But what was a christian sister doing in the house of her fiance all alone?
CHLOE: (Buttons her blouse again) He insisted that I come! He said it would be over if I didn't come. He said he was led of the Holy Spirit that I should come. I had to obey the Holy Spirit!
AUNTIETears gather in her eyes) Yeh... Ah!... Oluwa mi oooooo! Which Holy Spirit?.. Ah, obviously not my Comforter!
CHLOE: He said he was led to search my body because the Holy Spirit told him I have evil marks on my body. I refused blatantly but he pulled at my clothes for a long time but when I bit at his shoulder, he started to beat me, called me a LovePeddler and pushed me out of his house.
AUNTIE: (Tears strolling down her face) So, what do you want from me? Why are you telling me this?
CHLOE: (Moves to her aunt and holds her hands, sniffing wetly) I want you to help me call him. Help me tell him that it was the work of the devil that allowed me to bite him. I also want you to join me in prayers to ask God to change him
AUNTIE: (Bites her lips) Ah, my Father!... This girl is just sharp for nothing! First class student for nothing!... Ah... Chloe! (Starts to cry as she falls on her knees)
CHLOE: (Looks shocked) Auntie, is anything the matter? Kelvin isn’t that bad o. He is just a chloeric!.. He even speaks in tongue. Let's just pray that God will go and show Himself strong in his weaknesses!... I love him... I love him still!
AUNTIE: (Looks into her face, shakes her head and rises to her feet, sniffing wetly) Let's go to his house now.
CHLOE: (Smiles as she wipes her face) Are you for real?
AUNTIE: (Picks her hand bag) Let's go!
(They walked out through the door and walked to the park. Auntie removes the tarpaulin from the Highlander jeep and opens the door. Chloe remains outside, looking shocked)
AUNTIE: Chloe, come in and let's go please
CHLOE: When you have about four good cars here, why are you going inside the one that is faulty?
AUNTIE: (Looks shocked) Faulty?... (She starts the car and the sound is loud enough to wake the dead. Chloe covers her ears)
CHLOE: (Shouts) We can't go with this car, auntie. Turn off the ignition! (She covers her ears)
AUNTIE: (Comes down from the car) Why?
CHLOE: Isn't it obvious that this car is faulty aunty?
AUNTIE: I just feel led to take this car. Its just its silencer that is faulty. I trust God to touch it!
CHLOE: (Shocked) What! Auntie, is everything okay?
AUNTIE: (Starts to cry) Its this car I love. Come and lets pray for it. It must work! Its the first car my husband bought for me and I love it! If the silencer doesn’t stop malfunctioning, I am not going to go anywhere. Let's pray please
CHLOE: (Stops suddenly) Auntie... (stammers) Exactly what are you... Erm... Are you... (bursts out crying)
AUNTIE: (Looks shocked too) Why are you crying for the poor car? Please, lets pray for it. Lets heal it of its sickness. All the other cars present are okay but its the one I want. The brake is bad but its the one, it killed my first daughter, but its the one (starts to cry) it made my husband’s right leg shorter than the left but its the one I want. Its the one! Its been banned from even plying the road but my love for it!... Oh! (She cries on)
CHLOE: (Sits on the floor) Oh Lord!....Oh my! Oh my God! Is that the picture of me?....oh Lord!...Ah.... I have been foolish...(Wails).... Oh Lord!
AUNTIE: (Moves to sit on the floor beside her) You don’t have peace in your courtship, peace is ruled out in your marriage definitely!
CHLOE: (Cries on) Ah!
AUNTIE: He beats you using the name of the Holy Spirit during courtship, that's a red light!... In marriage, there would be disaster! There would be causalities!
CHLOE: (Cries harder) Its just... Its just,... But I love him!... I do!
AUNTIE: (Pats her back) Its not love! Love sees clearly! He is using you! You are infatuated about him! He can kill you but you want to stay put!...you want to endure the marriage when God wants you to enjoy it!
CHLOE: (Blows her nose into a hanky) I am not sure I can survive without him!
AUNTIE: (Looks shocked, her hands crossed) Chloe, Kelvin is an angry man, he is not born again, leave the tongues and the lies he is saying in the name of the Lord, he is a jealous guy capable of telling you to even cut ties with your parents after marriage! He is wicked! He is a sex-driven beast as well! He isn’t proud of you! He is not in love with you! If he loves you, he wouldn't call you a toad or frog or whatever! He would apologize when wrong.
CHLOE: (Rests against her chest) Aunty, what should I I do?
AUNTIE: (She stands and walks to the car, draws back the tarpaulin) We have to return the tarpaulin first of all and then call daddy to ask him what car he is releasing for you to use. You will pick the car and unlike this one, they are washed thoroughly and you can start your smooth drive.
CHLOE: Breaking up with Kelvin...
AUNTIE: Break up before he breaks you!
CHLOE:... and then going back to God for a fresh beginning you mean?
AUNTIE: (Claps her hands) Correct!
CHLOE: We have been together now for five years aunt (Sobs)
AUNTIE: No matter how far one is on the wrong path, its not too late to turn back darling. Its not! Turn back before you turn black!
CHLOE: (Cries aloud, her veins very visible) Ah!...I never knew I had been foolish Baba mi ooooo....Forgive my foolishness Lord! Console me Lord!
(Auntie holds her back, dials Kelvin's number and puts the phone close to her ears)
AUNTIE: (In a loud voice) Kelvin is on the line, break up now forever!....
CHLOE: (Looks into her face pitifully as tears rolled down her face) Can I?... (she whispers)
CHLOE: (Frowns a bit, shaking) I break up with you in Jesus' precious name!
KELVIN: (Laughs) How many times have you said so before? Can you survive without me? You think you can?
CHLOE: (Shakes her head aggressively, standing up) I have been foolish to remain with such an hypocrite as you! I am a queen! I must have let my guard down for an ingrate like you! I must have been really blind to think it was you...
KELVIN: Chloe, who is teaching you to face me? Who?
CHLOE: I have woken up Kelvin!... I am no more in a drunken slumber! I have been infatuated, right but not anymore! It ends today! Why should I remain with someone who makes me feel less when God makes me great! Why should I be beaten blue black when my Savior is unbeatable? Why should I waste my emotions on someone who doesn't worth it? Why should I be unequally yoked with an unbeliever?
KELVIN: What!... Are you....
CHLOE: Stop there! You have no right to talk back at me anymore. Its a break up for real this time!.. Bye!
KELVIN: Chloe... Wait... Chloe.. Wait!....
CHLOE: (Pants hard as she removes her sim card and breaks it) I can’t be made to ride on horses and stoop so low to begging for a ride on bicycle!... No!
AUNTIE: (Watches on in awe, smiling, she starts clapping with glee) That’s the spirit darling!. That's the spirit!
CHLOE: (Pauses as she looks at her aunt) I feel somehow...(Drops her shoulders) I feel great that I finally spoke out, but....(Pouts sadly) I also feel.... empty!
AUNTIE: (Hugs her) You will heal darling! You will heal, love. You will!
Yes you will heal ladies! Check your relationship connection again! Yes you will heal guys! Check your relationship connection again! Ask God again! His will is sweet! Never would he want a bad car for you! #Be_free!

Ah! @Laudate, it' been a long time. Hope you're good?
LMAO... You cracked me up with your reference to a mature older man like me as a "naughty boy."
Yup, it's been 4 years since this thread was created and elections have taken place again in that state. This thread is really hilarious and serves as a reminder of the sequence of events.

PAQ: Wow, i have learnt something. Nice one. You should put this up on their review pages on imdb, rotten tomatoes or netflix. This will educate alot of people.... Even the producers and actors of same movie.
@PAC,
I'm glad you learned from my post. I've just finished reading Naptu2's fantastic feedback of today which referenced my post on the Sugar Hill movie in his classic NL diary: "It begins with me."
I'd like you to also read his post of today where he used the keyword or phrase "confirmation bias" to explain some historical reasons why some tensions exist between Africans and African-Americans.
I agree with you about posting my review on those movie rating Websites. I also planned since 2019 to post reviews on YouTube and elsewhere online. A young Nigerian lady of Yoruba descent who lives in Canada and teaches Yoruba online in her spare time also made a fantastic YouTube video in 2019 explaining the etymology or origins and usage of the word Akata.
Even the first post I made to you is already indexed in the top 10 results on Google.
Conclusion: In the final analysis, I strongly think that filing defamation suits by Nigerians in especially the U.S. against those movie producers, book writers and online media platforms (like podcasts, YouTube posts, etc) that have been foolishly misleading people about the meaning of Akata, and it's use as a metaphor, would bring more sanity, love and respect between Nigerians/Africans and African-Americans.
1. Gangs of London 2. Survivors Remorse 3. Gringo 4. Sahara 5. Mr Johnson 6. Phat girlz 7. X-men origins 8. Lost 9. Critical assignment 10. The Bourne Identity 11. Sugar Hill
The OP is a learner!
An insightful list!
The movie, "Sugar Hill" which featured my main man Wesley Snipes was a classic for me when I first saw it in 1994, but the annoying and clearly defamatory thing is that the Yoruba word Akata was incorrectly refered to as "cotton picker."
[Akata is NOT a derogatory word but means a black Panther or large wild cat as published in the first Yoruba dictionary in the 1800s, and has been used for several decades as a prestigious metaphor to refer to Yorubas and other Africans who have traveled to the Western world for education, and have imbibed Western values and accents, etc, after living there for years. Africans in the Diaspora are metaphorically "Akata" as opposed to Africans on the Continent who in Yoruba are metaphorically "Ologbo" or domestic/house cat].
*Akatas or panthers/wild cats live far away in the wild jungle. (The wild jungle refers to the Western world, i.e., UK, U.S.).
*Ologbos or house cats live in domestic households (The domestic household here refers to Continental Africa/Africans).
Yorubas, Asantis, Efiks, Hausas, Zulus, and indeed many African ethnicities use metaphors in day-to-day conversations. The Iroko trees, panthers, lions, rocks, mountains, etc, are some of the metaphors that are used to describe human beings and their attributes of dependability, strength, bravery, respect, body size. Even the English people use metaphors in their language!
We can now see how some of these fictional Hollywood movies have stereotyped Nigerians, Haitians, Africans, etc, by focussing on misrepresentations and negatives.
NOTE: The second picture below is the Akata scene showing the 2 men who played the role of members of a Nigerian drug cartel in the 1994 Wesley Snipes' "Sugar Hill" movie. This is the scene where Wesley Snipes' African-American buddy (wearing the red jacket in the first and third pictures below) WRONGLY told him that Akata means "cotton picker" and being called "cotton picker" in America is offensive to African-Americans.
P.S. @Naptu2 would be interested in this. Obrigado... Cheers.
OYINBOGOJU: Wesley Snipes has been released from a federal prison in Pennsylvania.
Snipes was convicted in 2008 on tax charges. He was released Tuesday and placed under home confinement. A Bureau of Corrections spokeswoman said Friday he'll be overseen by the New York Community Corrections Office until July 19.
Snipes has appeared in dozens of films, from "White Men Can't Jump" and "Demolition Man" in the early 1990s to the "Blade" trilogy. He entered the McKean prison in December 2010 to begin a three-year sentence for failure to file income tax returns.
Snipes belonged to a group that challenged the government's right to collect taxes. Prosecutors say he failed to file returns for at least a decade and owed millions of dollars in back taxes.
Snipes had appealed in an Atlanta court, saying he didn't get a fair trial.
Throwback:
Failure to file income tax returns for many years is a criminal offence in any sane country!
Hackportal: Popular Nigerian Cross-dresser Bobrisky is trending after his former Personal Assistant (PA) Oye Kyme, is pregnant and many have assumed Bobrisky is responsible for the pregnancy.
While sharing the photos of her bump on Instagram Minutes ago, Oye Kyme wrote “Guess or tag the father” and many Nigerians have stormed the comment section to tag Idris Okuneye aka Bobrisky.
Ivorian oye Kyme, trended on social media in May, 2021 after she tattooed Bobrisky’s name on her laps. Bobrisky then decided to fly her into Nigeria and make her his PA. A position she occupied for only 3 months before their relationship went sour.
The cross-dresser’s PA shared videos and photos accusing Bobrisky of beating her for not calling his hair stylist on time. She made other shocking accusations against Bobrisky, all of which he denied.
Kyme also alleged that during her time with Bobrisky as PA, she used to help him shave the hair on his chest, wear him his fake butt and also his diapers.
See the Screen shot of her post below;
As at the time of filling this report, Bobrisky is yet to comment on these speculations.
Aquariann: First of all, you have to reroof your building with stronger woods. Then secondly as the new wood are being nailed in place, the carpenter using a paint brush applies condemned engine oil on the wood.
That is like painting the planks black using condemned engine oil. This should last a lifetime as the hydrocarbon present in the oil will never wear off making the wood uninhabitable for the termites.
Don't bother about people saying fumigate (some just dey sell market) because after a while the effect of the fumigation wears off and insects are all over the place again.
This is how it's done in the town I grew up in.
Interesting...
Solignum is another product to use for wood coating.
Eriokanmi: Sad! I suspect sabotage....purely an orchestrated act. Same contractors engaged in the UK and South African edifices which still stand strong were also employed to handle the ikoyi building project so as to maintain same quality standards. Incidentally, the collapse took place while they were all having a crucial meeting in the building. The Italian partner who was there at the time also was vast in building projects in other countries in the west. From the works of Cappa and D'Alberto, an Italian construction giants who had been with us for nearly a century, we could attest to Italian quality standards when it comes to high-rise building construction.
I hope the governor will be able to spread the nets of intelligence around and come out with a veritable report else, in our very eyes in Lagos, more will still happen and we'd blame it on use of substandard materials or compromise. Terrorists are superb in their plans.
Just like you @Eriokanmi, I'm still stunned because since 1997, the Mayflower School, Ikenne and British-educated 55-year-old 'Femi Osibona has a pedigree of buying up lands and erecting solid multi-storey buildings in the UK, U.S.A, South Africa, Nigeria. I mean this gentleman was a dogged and savvy NGN billionare businessman.
The U.S. and China have incidentally had skyscraper collapses in 2021. Miami had a partial collapse of a 12-storey building on June 24 with 98 people losing their lives!
Just a little error in construction or sabotage can bring down a high-rise. I still remember how in the early 1990s, the U.S. Army first Gulf War veteran, Timothy McVeigh used fertiliser explosives packed in a rented vehicle to destroy the Alfred Murray Centre building. While watching the breaking news and live updates on CNN, we all though it was an Islamist terror attack on American soil!

TheFinance101: Asset classes can be seen as a collection of financial products with common characteristics like risk, returns, liquidity, and various other parameters. Having different assets in your portfolio allows you to take advantage of the different strengths of each class. While all assets have their pros and cons, a basic knowledge of these assets will help you understand how to invest better.
Assets put money in your pocket. The more assets you have making money for you, the richer you get. If you have an investment portfolio or intend to build one, these are 5 asset classes you should consider:
1. CASH They include liquid funds, saving accounts, online wallets, hard cash, money market instruments and certificates of deposit (CDs). Cash provides a safe haven for funds when markets are rocky or looking overvalued. It offers liquidity and most cash deals offer higher returns (Peer to peer lending). They are an important part of an investment portfolio because their high liquidity makes it easy for you to readily seize opportunities. Unlike stocks and other assets, cash equivalents must have a determined market price that doesn’t fluctuate. The downside of cash and its equivalents is, interest from banks doesn’t keep up with inflation.
2. STOCKS Stocks are a collection of shares (units of ownership of a company). The company divides its capital into equal parts, which it can then sell as shares. Owning stocks in different companies can help you build your portfolio, protect your money from inflation, and maximize income from your investments if you consider a long-term perspective. The downside just like any investment is it comes with risks. The stock market is volatile and best suited to long-term investing.
3. BONDS Bonds are a debt instrument or an IOU. They contribute an element of stability to any diversified portfolio. Bonds are a safe and conservative investment that offers relatively low volatility, high liquidity and a measure of legal protection. When you invest in bonds, you lend money to the bond issuer (corporations, local/ federal Governments). You lend them the money for a specified period of time known as the bond term. They in turn pay you interest at a specified interest rate. The downside is a lower rate of return.
4. REAL ESTATE Real estate is the most common type of tangible assets that people own. It offers passive income and long-term wealth. You can create regular income and cash flow, protect against inflation and build equity for the future with real estate investment opportunities (REIT’s – Real Estate Investment Trusts, rental properties – residential, commercial, industrial, retail e.t.c). The major drawback is it requires a lot of upfront capital and you lose liquidity.
5. COMMODITIES Commodities offer an inflation hedge unmatched by other asset classes and the prospect of improved risk-adjusted returns. It benefits investors during economic uncertainties. They are riskier forms of investments with opportunities to make huge profits. Another downside of commodities is that they are susceptible to weather and regulatory risks. Commodities can be divided into four sectors;
Your portfolio is considered balanced when it includes investments spread across various assets. Diversifying your portfolio is ideal because it helps to reduce risk while maximizing returns. Assets all have their advantages and disadvantages. Consider your risk tolerance and financial goals before opting for any investment option.
www.overwood.ng focuses mainly on the safety of your funds and providing you with safe high-yield investment options to help you build long-term wealth.
TheFinance101: As the festive season approaches, one of the most experienced challenges with personal finances is excessive spending. To attain financial freedom, you need to find the balance between your earning, spending, savings, and investment routine. A journey towards financial freedom requires being consistent with managing your finances effectively. This article focuses on five basic steps you can take to carefully cut down on excessive spending.
Avoid Impulse Spending Impulse spending is a spending habit that can leave you poor. It is simply an unplanned purchase that is not in your budget. It can be as minute as re-subscribing your monthly data plan to buying a new gadget. When overspending happens frequently, your finances can suffer but when you consciously stick to your budget, you’ll most likely have more money to save and invest in the long run.
Stick to Your Budget The essence of having a budget is to spend on the most prioritized needs. When you spend outside of your budget, you are gradually robbing yourself of other necessities. Create a plan for your spending that you can actually stick to so you can take control of your money. To stick to your budget is to simply tell your money where to go at any given time.
Stop Using Your Credit Card A credit card allows you to buy things you did not prepare the liquid cash for at the moment. Having your credit card with you often can lead to overspending. Credit works well when balances are paid off each month, but it can be disastrous when poorly managed. The best practice for avoiding credit card fees and interest is to not spend money until you save enough to cover the purchase.
Automate Periodic Investments The best way to build your wealth and avoid excessive spending is with automation. It helps you manage your spending habits by ensuring you're contributing towards your goals first before spending. Learning how to automate savings may even help you achieve your financial goals faster.
Avoid Money Pits When you’re trying to become financially stable, you need to look out for money pits. These are the things that look like a good idea at the moment but eventually produce bigger expenses. Money pits can take away from your savings, or even worse, lead to debt. Focus on keeping your money in your own hands. Spend it how you want, save and invest it when you can, and try to lose as little as possible.
Final Thoughts Learning how to stop spending money is hard, but it is possible. It takes time and dedication to stop overspending and to reform your spending habits. Recognize what prompts you to spend too much and put safeguards to curb it before it hurts your financial well-being.
Great post!
In addition:
1. Avoid investing in what you have NO idea about.
bukatyne: Well, our beliefs on the rest is different.
@bold: hahahahaha
I would rather go places and experiences than just food
Ah! Lol... That'll be just fine.
Bukatyne, you must be a real lover of adventure and leisure travel. I'm certain that pre-Covid, YOU would have jetted out to a resort in say the Seychelles, S/Africa or Maui in Hawaii... basking in the early morning sun on the beach front with the cool smell of pristine air hugging the entire body.
Dayum... I know that feeling.
However, I heard and read that Inagbe Resort, Lagos owned by the Ooni of Ife, and Lufasi Park in Lekki founded by Desmond Majekodumi are top-notch alternatives though.
In Nigeria, I've been on leisure trips to La Campagne Tropicana, and the stupendously breathtaking Obudu Resort. I was literally inside real clouds at a temperate, high altitude in Obudu.
I love the sound of this mantra sa... "Save, Spend, and Rest."
bukatyne: I would rather save up all through the year and splurge.
One needs to mentally, socially and emotionally relax during holidays to recharge for the next year's grind.
If you don't earn so much, biko save from January to December so you can relassss on your level.
Even God rested on the 7th day.
Everyone needs periodic breaks to refresh.
Which 7th day rest? That's one of the many biblical allegories or "midrash" in Jewish theology. God or the Divine exists beyond "space and time" and does not need any resting.
On the other hand Bukatyne, you're absolutely spot on about saving up, spending, then getting refreshed at the end of each yearly cycle.
Okay, so get ready to let your guards down and "splurge" on chunks of chocs, cocktail drinks, cup cakes, pina colada, etc, this December, knowing full well that "antacids" would come to the rescue.
ebuka1511: Thank you my brother, the issue here is purely quality control. I recently had an experience with a friend who went to Steel Village in PH to purchase some rods for his construction project. On his list were various lengths of rods he will need to buy. My friend not wanting to be short-changed by the engineer decided to buy his material himself so I tugged along.
Within the steel village, when we made enquiry for 16mm, 12mm, and 10mm rods, low and behold what we were shown were 14mm,10mm and 8mm in places of 16, 12 and 10mm. The friend is not so technical when it comes to issues like this, I now had to call his attention to the quality of the rods, alas, when I now informed the sellers that these grades of steel were below the actual steel, they all came out to say it is the Economy, it is affecting everything even quality of many products. At the end of the, we actually got our listed rod at the right quality but at a far higher price. This is the state of the country. Had I not been with my friend and he made his purchases and left if tomorrow something happens and the building collapse, we all start shouting Engineers, but in actual fact, the strength of materials used was far below standards.
I remember telling them that many collapsing structures most times are as a result of their activities, compromising with the quality of materials on sale to inexperienced buyers. The stated quantity of material needed for a building project is bought, however, the quality is far below standard quality. Check out many consumer products like your normal satchel peak milk, the 1g sachet, same thing, weight far below 1g and then the quality of the milk is also far below normal quality yet, the price is on a daily increase, look around you, its also happening with other consumer products and unfortunately in the building industry, it is very fatal when projects like this fail.
To me, prices can be increased but let the quality of the product not be tampered with.
May God help the trapped victims and keep them safe.
This is deep!
Thanks for sharing this with everyone. I remember that in 2019, a multi-storey building under construction collapsed in the same Port Harcourt taking the lives of many construction workers including the supervisor on site.
I think undercover people with spycams can be used to nail these criminals who sell inferior building materials. A minimum of capital punishment is the key to dealing with these shylocks!
Newboss: Software performs theoretical evaluation. The issue could even be from the software that you're talking about. The software works with the values that it was given. The state of the land on which the building was constructed is a very important variable. Software can tell you that something is correct, whereas it's very wrong.
If you give the software a wrong value, it may give you the wrong result or the correct result, depending on the variation in input value. It's all garbage in garbage out.
The owner of a building should be on site as much as possible. Nigerian workers cannot be trusted with resources. Some will even steal rods, bags of cement, etc, and tell you that they were not enough.
Urggh! Finally making my first online comment on this huge tragedy.
This Ikoyi building collapsed like a pack of Cream Crackers and it's amazing that 9 people were able to survive this as of today... and 38 folks passed on.
This is a FINAL wake up call for ruthlessness in dealing with every stage of building construction in Nigeria and worldwide. TQM must be brutally enforced... from the building materials to the fully erected buildings!
Miami in Florida had a partial collapse of an already fully occupied high-rise apartment with loss of lives a few months ago in 2021. Other buildings have collapsed around the world sans earthquakes.
My deep condolence goes out to the families of EVERYONE in that building. The pain is deep, but time will heal the pain and wounds.

ahnie: I am a legit street business CEO (An akarapreneur)
@ahnie, nice thread. Is that "sexy" rice combo an Isoko delicacy or what?
1. A street CEO? You mean you own a robust and profitable akara business in town?
2. Second, I'm curious... is your spouse from Asaba or any of the Anioma towns in Delta North? What attracted both of you to each other despite your different ethnicities?
3. Last but not least... You've got a neatly tiled, minimalist kitchen and sparkling utensils! I love it when a woman is able to guide the entire family to maintain a neat residencial space.
DivineR: I came across this article and find it useful. Ladies take time to digest.
We live in a politically correct world right? In other words, it doesn’t matter how soon you sleep with a man, right? Wrong.
But, not for the reasons you think. Not because men have double standards. But for your happiness and relationship success.
Men will ‘categorize’ women in to either one of two categories, whether we like it or not. They still do it. You are either a ‘just for a good time’ girl, or wife material. This doesn’t mean that men are right, or that this is a good way or categorizing women; it’s just what commonly happens, on a surface level, and you need to be aware of it.
Pre-framing your relationship with a Man And, the sooner you sleep with a man without building ATTRACTION first, the harder it is going to be to develop a committed relationship with him. Why? Because the beginning stages of a relationship or courtship are when the FUTURE of a relationship is pre-framed.
What I mean is; if you sleep with a man early, it’s highly likely that he will only see you as someone he sleeps with, not someone he marries; and he might be more likely to keep expecting that. When it’s done, it’s hard to change the original ‘terms’ you created for the relationship at the start. There’s a reason for this, and it has to do with how men are built; how their brains are wired, but I won’t go in to that stuff here.
Is this fair? Not at all. It’s downright painful at times, for a woman to be in this position, or to make such a move and then find herself in a position she never intended to be in, but it’s how it is.
I don’t believe in holding back sex out of fear that he will run. That decision is coming from the totally wrong place. And more importantly, I don’t believe in feeling guilty over sleeping with a man too early. Neither of these two things are in the least bit relevant, or useful in your life. We’re aiming for happiness and passion in your love life, not feelings of guilt or just becoming overly controlling about what the “right” decision is.
So what is best for you as a woman, is to start off with awareness of how men think in this area, and then make the right decisions for your own life, through true awareness.
When it comes to men and your choice of when to sleep with a man, you need to be aware of only these two important things:
1) Men want to have sex, but they actually NEED is to feel attraction. That is what they are looking for, underneath the many cries for sex, sex, sex.
So, sex is rarely what they really want. As a woman, its your job to remember that, for your own happiness, and not expect men to tell you that.
Because too many women do not know this, and then they don’t know what else to give a man, so they feel pressured to have sex with him (which they do), and then the man leaves, which is very hurtful the day after, when you are left feeling used.
2) If there is not enough attraction between you and a man, he will be more likely to push for sex, and with much more urgency.
If you want to be a High Value, High Status woman, you need to realize that if you are not focusing on building attraction with men, you will find yourself having slept with men, but most of them would have run; only because there was not enough attraction.
Is the Question: How Soon is too soon to sleep with a man? To be frank: the question is not WHEN should you sleep with a man, or how SOON is too soon to sleep with a man. The question is: how much attraction is there between you and the man that you are dating?
That’s the simple secret to men: Attraction. It’s not sex. After all, if it was sex, why would men actually turn DOWN offers of sex from hookers? I was recently in Singapore, and mistakenly ended up in a hotel in the red light district after a mistake in booking a hotel (a long story) and to my dismay, for the two nights I was there, every morning and evening I would look out the window, and witness many young women approaching men with offers of sex (at a price of course), and a majority of men turned down the offers for sex.
Most single men can afford a night with a hooker, especially in parts of Asia where I was, yet I personally witnessed one man after another, turning young women’s offers for sex away.
Men must just want sex, right?
No.
Men want to feel attraction.
What if YOU want casual sex with a man? So, what if YOU just want to sleep with a man, you ask? Well, that’s up to you. That’s your decision. Perhaps, if you have already decided that a man is not marriage material, that you want to just have casual sex with him. That’s your choice. But you DO have to be aware that, even though this might seem safe and convenient, what you are doing, effectively, is tarnishing your own ‘associations’ with sex by settling for what’s comfortable and convenient at the time. A 5/10 experience.
At our core, what we want, is not just some sex, or just a good time. We want something deeper, something infinitely passionate, something that makes us feel alive. The longer you go with just a sex friend, rather than opening your heart and being vulnerable to the right man, and the longer you have sex with someone you are NOT passionate about and would NOT die for, the more you imprint associations in to your brain of mediocre, ‘ok’, experiences, and that in turn effects the energy that you put out in to the world, to another man who may be worth spending the rest of your life with.
So what is the solution? This is the solution: keep your focus where it benefits you and your future relationship the most: focus on creating attraction with men. Then, everything else will fall in place naturally, and it will all feel ‘right’ to you.
Become that woman who is irresistibly attractive, playful, fun and fascinating, so that men are more interested in committing themselves to you than just having sex with you.
The situation is right when a man is compelled to keep contacting you even when you haven’t had sex.
And this is ESPECIALLY true for a man whom you want to spend the rest of your life with. Attraction is the truly valuable experience that a man wants, not just sex. If you want to become an expert at doing that with men, join Attraction Control Monthly.
Attraction and passion FIRST; then sex. Once there is enough attraction, sex will happen at the right time completely NATURALLY, without you having to beat yourself up with guilt over ‘sleeping with him too soon’ or laying awake at night wondering when is the ‘right’ time. It’s for your own future and benefit.
And when you prioritize the feelings of Attraction between you and a man, you let the tension build up slowly, and everything will be a much better experience for both of you.
Now over to you: what are your thoughts on sex with men? How soon is too soon and what recommendations do you have for other women who are unsure about when they should and shouldn’t have sex with a man?
libby01: We all know it is the normal affair for a woman to officially change her surname to her husband’s name after the wedding.
In some cases, the woman goes as far as changing her state of origin to her husband’s.
So you hear things like, “I am Delta by blood, Yoruba by marriage.”
However, with the rapid change in our social stances and the cry of gender equality getting stronger by the day, a lot of married women do not change their surnames these days and some single ladies have expressed their stance not to change their surnames after marriage.
This may be seen as rebellion of some sort, chaos to a perfect order of living or simply unnecessary but the reasons behind this is perfectly logical.
The reasons for women choosing not to change their surnames vary:
1. Identity: Some women feel it is not worth the stress.
One married woman said, “Everyone knows me as Ms. T. Y. Changing my name and having all my documents bear Mrs T. Z. is totally unnecessary to me. What if an old contact wants to reach out to me and can’t find me by my original name? Abeg, I cannot jare. Besides, if it is not an issue in my home. My husband and the kids bear his surname. I bear my own. Everybody is fine.”
2. Equality: A woman changing her surname after marriage is one of the manifestations of gender superiority.
It shows that the man’s identity is far more important than the woman’s and this should not be as man and woman both need each other to coexist.
3. Culture: History has shown us that in most African cultures in precolonial times, the woman always retained her family identity.
chimjoshjuan: Governor Nasir El-Rufai has revealed his plans of sending a delegation to tell the Republic of Niger to start using the Kaduna Inland Dry Port instead of using the seaports in Lagos State.El-Rufai who revealed that he will tell Niger to start using Kaduna port and not Lagos while speaking on Tuesday on sidelines of the ceremony for the commencement of cargo delivery by rail to the Kaduna Inland Dry Port, said;
“We are very grateful today’s event has opened a new vista of commercial opportunities, not only for northern businessmen but even for our neighbouring countries. I intend to send a delegation to the Republic of Niger to sensitise the government of that country on the opportunities of receiving their goods in Kaduna instead of Lagos and having to truck them, as well as any of their exports from Kaduna port to any part of the world.
You can ship your goods directly from Kaduna to any part of the world and you can also import goods from any part of the world directly to Kaduna without your containers or any of your goods being opened up for inspection in Lagos.”
wirinet: The SS has many seaports, it's just not being utilised.
The SE cannot have a sea port simply because there are no seas in the SE. What can be built are river ports. Building river ports to the SE is a bit complicated. You need permission from communities down the delta to dredge the river. Abacha had problems with Ijaw communities when he attempted to dredge the river to onitsha. Furthermore, the river would need periodic maintenance, ie periodic dredging and removing of debis from the river to allow ships sail through easily. The tiny stretch of water between the ocean and Apapa ports undergoes constant dredging. You need a long term serious maintainable plan to operate and maintain a river port deep inland.
Well said! Best response so far.
However ALL the ports in the SS region are river ports NOT sea ports, because they are located along rivers and not the sea/ocean.
Are you thinking of buying tarpaulin fish pond for your fish farm?
I have compiled some of the common size dimensions (in feet) and their fish-holding capacities that you should consider, depending on the size of the land upon which you want to set up your pond.
The dimensions are of the length, width and height, with height being constant at 4 feet.
Information on the sizes stated below were gotten from Benuwatts Company Limited, the only company I would personally advice you to trust when buying tarpaulin fish ponds.
15x15x4 feet Reinforced Tarpaulin for One thousand (1000) Table Size Catfish Capacity: if you are looking to farm up to one thousand table size fishes (catfish is used as reference), then you should consider going for this size.
However, it is always advisable to have two or even three ponds when starting out in order to have the opportunity to sort (or separate) your fishes based on their sizes. Else the shoot outs (the fishes that quickly grow bigger than others) will begin to feed on the others.
So, instead of buying just one large 1000-capacity tarpaulin to house all your fishes from fingerlings/juvenile to table size, you should buy two or three smaller tarpaulins so that you can sort into the other tarpaulin ponds as the fingerlings/juveniles grow. Mind you, the more space the fishes have to swim around, the better the results you will get in terms of size and weight of the fishes within a set period of time. At the time of this write up, this size of reinforced tarpaulin costs between N64,000 – N70,000 on Benuwatts website, aside ongoing promos.
Other smaller sizes include: 10x15x4 feet Reinforced Tarpaulin for Six Hundred and Sixty Seven (667) Table Size Catfish Capacity: At the time of this write up, this size of reinforced tarpaulin costs between N55,000 – N59,000 on Benuwatts website, aside ongoing promos.
12x12x4 feet Reinforced Tarpaulin for Six Hundred and Forty (640) Table Size Catfish Capacity: At the time of this write up, this size of reinforced tarpaulin costs between N54,000 – 58,000 on Benuwatts website, aside ongoing promos.
10x12x4 feet Reinforced Tarpaulin for Five Hundred and Thirty Three (533) Table Size Catfish Capacity: At the time of this write up, this size of reinforced tarpaulin costs between N51,000 – N54,000 on Benuwatts website, aside ongoing promos.
10x10x4 feet Reinforced Tarpaulin for Four Hundred and Forty Five (445) Table Size Catfish Capacity: At the time of this write up, this size of reinforced tarpaulin costs between N46,000 – N50,000 on Benuwatts website, aside ongoing promos.
7x10x4 feet Reinforced Tarpaulin for Three Hundred and Eleven (311) Table Size Catfish Capacity: At the time of this write up, this size of reinforced tarpaulin costs between N45,000 – N47,000 on Benuwatts website, aside ongoing promos.
6x8x4 feet Reinforced Tarpaulin for Two Hundred and Thirteen (213) Table Size Catfish Capacity: At the time of this write up, this size of reinforced tarpaulin costs between N42,000 – N45,000 on Benuwatts website, aside ongoing promos.
5x8x4 feet Reinforced Tarpaulin for One Hundred and Seventy Eight (178) Table Size Catfish Capacity: At the time of this write up, this size of reinforced tarpaulin costs between N38,000 – N42,000 on Benuwatts website, aside ongoing promos.
4x10x4 feet Reinforced Tarpaulin for One Hundred and Seventy Eight (178) Table Size Catfish Capacity: At the time of this write up, this size of reinforced tarpaulin costs between N38,000 – N42,000 on Benuwatts website, aside ongoing promos.
4x6x4 feet Reinforced Tarpaulin for One Hundred and Seven(107) Table Size Catfish Capacity: At the time of this write up, this size of reinforced tarpaulin costs between N36,000 – N40,000 on Benuwatts website, aside ongoing promos.
Please kindly note that the prices quoted above are for the tarpaulins only. Customers will still need to buy preferred frame material (galvanized pipes, metal, wood, bamboo, etc.) locally to set up their fish ponds.
Buying the genuine reinforced tarpaulin from Benuwatts and setting it up yourself (with the help of local welders/carpenters) is called a DIY (Do-It-Yourself) approach and it saves customers between 15-25K compared to when smaller tarpaulin vendors are hired to do the complete set up.
