PoliticsUs Raising Epa Standards - A Great Concern For Nigeria's Oil Dependent Economy! by Lax75(op): 5:07am On May 20, 2009
[b]From Reuters May 19th, 2009>

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090520/bs_nm/us_obama_emissions_11

Obama said the standards, announced at a White House ceremony attended by auto industry and union leaders, would reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil and give five years of cost certainty to an industry battling to survive.

"The status quo is no longer acceptable," Obama said in an announcement that will pressure carmakers to transform and modernize the industry to produce more efficient vehicles.

"We have done little to increase fuel efficiency of America's cars and trucks for decades," he said, calling the standards the start of a transition to a clean energy economy.

Obama has made fighting climate change a priority, and lawmakers in Congress have begun wrangling over a historic bill many hope will provide broader guidelines for controlling greenhouse gas emissions.

Growing public support for efforts to battle climate change and the weakened state of the U.S. auto industry, which is staying afloat through federal bailouts and restructuring at the government's direction, gave Obama a window of opportunity to impose the rules.

Criticism of Obama's announcement was limited, and focused on the higher production costs, the safety concerns created by producing lighter cars and fears from some observers about increasing government involvement in the industry.

"The government is now designing our cars. It's out  partners in oil trade of the hands of vehicle manufacturers," said auto industry consultant Larry Rinek.

Under the new standards, U.S. passenger vehicles and light trucks must average 35.5 miles per gallon (6.62 litres/100km) by 2016. The current law, approved by the Bush administration, requires a similar gain by 2020.

Obama said the new standards would save 1.8 billion barrels of oil over the lifetime of the program -- the equivalent of taking 58 million cars off the road for a year.

Personally, I think this is a serious wake up call for Nigeria!! If we haven't learned anything from the drastic drop in the price of oil, then we are in bigger trouble. This is a no brainer. The US along with other western giants are looking for ways to cut down their dependency on the Arab nations. This has been their archiles heel for a long time and an obstacle in their “war on terrorism.” The emission standards is only part of a bigger plan to cut down on demand for oil. This will affect Nigeria's revenue in the near future and our 90% oil-GDP economy will really be in for it. It is high time we really take our "pre-oil boom" resources more seriously as we are blessed with abundant resources apart from oil. States need to independently look inward and look for ways to generate revenue and not be 100% dependent on a federal budget that is almost 100% dependent on oil.
This is something to take extremely seriously!

Your thoughts.

First off, Nigerians are not lazy , try paying Nigerians per hour, and you'll find yourself begging them to go home. Afterall, how many other nationals out here in London work more hours than Nigerians?

Thank you! I don't know where people get this notion that nigerians are lazy. We are a very smart and resourceful people.

For you to take enough time out to come online and post about this guy, you yourself get time. I guess you can prevent AIDS from spreading round the entire globe by doing something to stop this guy right? I would mind your business if I were you. How do you know his wife is not getting her groove on by the side with another guy too? The world is a crazy place like you said and because you are not in the same bed with him and his wife, you have no business in their business.

Personally, I think you are curious. Personally, I think you probably put your ear to the door when this guy is getting it on. I also doubt that your man (if you truly have one) is laying it down on you good because if he did, you would care less about your neighbor's biz.

RomanceRe: Can Naija Guys Abroad Trust Girls In Nigeria To Be Faithful? by Lax75(m): 6:30pm On May 15, 2009
I wouldn't do it as a guy. I'd rather just stick to naija girls here.
RomanceRe: Can Naija Guys Abroad Trust Girls In Nigeria To Be Faithful? by Lax75(m): 7:47pm On May 14, 2009
I have never understood the long distance relationship thing. Especially international long distance. MOST especially with girls/guys in naija. There are some success stories no doubt, but I have heard of some horror stories. When it's bad, it is REALLY bad. Personally, I wouldnt do it. And neither would I advise Naija girls in diaspora to do it. Face it, the situation in Naija is one that gives opportunists a stupid excuse to do "what they have to do" sometimes. I have a cousin who married someone who lives in London. Turns out that the guy happened to pregnate a couple of other chicks while he was in london and she lived in Naija.  So she has a baby for him, and so do two other women in London.

I'm not saying this is the case with all Diaspora-Naija relationships, but sometimes you can slim down your chances of catastrophes/drama by avoiding this kind of relationship.

I would rather just find me a naija sister within the same country at least.

My 2 cents.
CareerCorporate Nigeria Vs Corporate America: Share your experiences please by Lax75(op): 6:55pm On May 12, 2009
I am one of many who is getting ready to relocate back home and I just wanted to get a feel for what the corporate life is like in Nigeria, compared with that here in the US. Wanted some information on how those in nigeria view diasporans who come back to work along with them, bosses, work hours, any technical challenges, are a lot of the processes manual or automated, etc.

Those who have relocated, do you prefer corporate nigeria? Whyso.

Thanks

Also, is there a demand for Financial Analysts in Nigeria? Those who do Analysis, Reporting, Forecasting, Budgeting and Building of Financial Models.

For those that date the broke thug out boys you are absolutely correct.

So let me put it differently. . . . .99.9% of all Nigerian males in America throw the money at the women here to get thier attention (unless of course they have someone like me whispering in thier ear not to do it).

The truth is that most black women know where the easy money is. And we know that we can get it just on a hope a prayer that the man might get a whiff of the punnie. Most can be played for as long as 6 months before they start cutting the money in demand for goods. By that time we have moved on to the next sucker.

Dont mistake my truth and think that I dislike Nigerian men, just the opp. is true. I love my man and would not trade him. And had not for the circumstances that brought us together I would have never found out how wonderful Nigerian love can be.

Trust me I have played my fair share of Nigerian males.
Ok, I guess I can also say that 99.9% of African American women date nothing but thugged out baby boys and throw their money at them.

Interesting,

So far from everyone's input:

(1) Power issues - energy infrastructure
(2) Telecommunications issues - Telecom infrastructure
(3) Lack of proper town planning
(4) Poor work ethics
(5) Political issues

Yep, these are enough to scare foreign investors off from our shores. Pity, because if you think about it, in terms of outsourcing "services" it would have been nice if manufacturers like Nike, Reebok etc could set up factories in Nigeria and we could all see "made in nigeria" on their products. We are actually closer to the US than the Asian countries (from the east coast anyways).

So much money we are losing from this opportunity cost.
PoliticsRe: Is Nigeria Realy All About Corruption, Bad Governance, Yahoo Yahoo, 419, Drugs: by Lax75(m): 10:50pm On May 09, 2009
Nigeria is not a failed state. Until Nigerians actually become extint, its not a failed state. There is hope just like there was for Ghana. People would always compare Nigeria to Developed countries all the time but lets be realistic here. Let's crawl before we walk here. Let's compare apples to apples. Ghana, a little over a decade ago was no where near its current success. Yes, we have all these obstacles in Nigeria, but we also have many brilliant minds too. Nigerians are a bunch of smart, determined, creative people, who are admired by those who explicitly admit to these qualities, and implicitly by those who always bash us out of envy. That being said, we just need to re-focus our God given resources and chanel them towards success.

We are VERY blessed and our blessings are either mismanaged, embezzeled or looted by those who know we are blessed (the West). There is so much we can do, with the right infrastructure and leadership in place, besides selling crude oil. So much!! Tourism, outsourcing of labor from the west, agriculture, etc are all sleeping. Waiting to be exploited and "optimized."

So my answer is that there is more to Nigeria than corruption, yahoo, 419 etc, Here in the US, I don't have a single Nigerian friend who doesnt have at least an undergraduate degree. Most have advanced degrees and work as professionals in good companies. Many akata friends of mine have even made comments like "damn all y'all Nigerians are always doing something!" They got some hardcore respect for us.

My 2 cents

Omo this guy na fire oooo! But you know, this is what will bring we, as black people, to a state where we can actually advance. African Americans standing up for their mother land and vice versa.

Go on brother Farra!

Hey, I think you're generalizing too much. Yeah, African American girls have issues, but not all of them. The ones I know never get to show me their angry side. It strictly depends on how you met her (your African American babe) brother.
I'm glad you don't generalize, unlike peeps like Sistawoman who happens to know ALL Nigerian men on this planet or at least in the US.

No that is not true.

In america the only people throwing money at the women are Nigerian Males.

Most couples in American (both black) come to the table at about the same level to work together. The males dont just throw money at the females here unless of course the male is Nigerian.

I dont mean to hurt anyone just telling the truth.
huh?? huh

You must have met ALL Nigerian men in America for you to come to that conclusion. I can easily sit here and come to a conclusion that AA women love to throw money at their "thugged out baby boys." I have dated a number of AA chicks who dated nothing but these "baby boys" before meeting me and yet I don't conclude that ALL AA women like to throw money at their "tyrones" or "thugged out couch bums."
