A giant has fallen. WO1 Trevor Ian Floyd was one of the Dirty Dozen - the originals chosen to be the very first SA Special Forces operators all those decades ago.

shadowprimezero:Your question should be, what on earth is the Mozambican government doing? SADC works this way: the affected country evokes the mutual assistance protocol. Mozambique's government, for whatever reason, hasn't done so. They first denied the seriousness of the issue; then employed Russian PMC Wagner, who got their arses handed to them; and now have employed Zimbabwean/RSA PMC Dyck Advisory Group. |

Seen via Twitter: I found this in the internet. It's a VT4 turret without it's armor modules installed + armor module on the floor. Armor is not very thick it seems, also these mounting holes in turret shows backplate is also not thickhttps://mobile.twitter.com/DRatka1/status/1257351442857431040

More food for thought from the always excellent Peccavi. Some take-aways on the so-called Super Camp strategy: The Super Camp concept appears to have improved the survivability of Nigerian bases by concentrating forces in better defended locations. There is clearly a difficult balance between leaving troops in poorly defended positions to be overrun or protecting troops in larger camps but conceding ground to the enemy. Losing troops unnecessarily is clearly unsustainable, but the British Army’s experience of Platoon Houses in Helmand Province, Afghanistan has shown that well trained, well led troops with good fire support and logistics can defend small, far flung bases. In Nigeria’s case the Super Camp concept can only be a short term stop gap (if the Government ever truly wishes to eliminate Boko Haram); until the hinterlands are reoccupied with better planned, defended and resourced bases and/or deploying, highly mobile, flexible and heavily armed troops to dominate the ground. ...the enemy’s ability to move major forces from the Lake Chad area into central southern and eastern Borno speaks to their greater freedom of movement, which is most likely a consequence of the withdrawal of friendly forces into Super Camps. Whilst these camps afford greater protection to friendly forces, it abandons the civilian population to the enemy and allows them the freedom to move, manoeuvre, attack and sustain themselves over a wide swath of land.Read the whole thing here: https://peccaviconsulting./2020/02/13/boko-haram-iswaps-christmas-2019-offensive/ |

jln115:The Gazelle is registered in South Africa and belongs to the private security company Dyck Advisory Group, (DAG) based in South Africa and owned by former Zimbabwean military colonel Lionel Dyck. Col Dyck has a long history in Mozambique, having previously helped the government fight RENAMO back in the 80s. DAG has drployed the following air assets to Moz: -2 Gazelle gunships; -1 Bell UH I “Huey”; -1 Bell 406 Long Ranger; -1 Diamond DA42; and -1 Cessna Caravan. Apparently the Russian PMC Wagner has withdrawn after getting their arses kicked. |
East African country receiving armed Cessna Caravans H3 Solutions is delivering three armed Cessna 208 aircraft to a customer in Africa, which will fit them with laser-guided rocket launchers.Kenya |
kikuyu1:And the current mods to the R1, which came after short shorts and the bush wars? On point about the Tavors! |
There are cycles in military deployment. Whether army, navy or air force etc, every asset is deployed in cycles. 1 in the field; 1 in training; 1 in maintenance (r&r in the case of people) and 1 in reserve. One can provision for 3 and forgo the reserve at a pinch, but it's not optimal. No decent military will disregard this axiom and hope to survive. So, if a commander has 3 or 6 Mi35 and commits all to the field, inevitably he will have none in the field. |

Streamlined logistics is still something a lot of militaries on our continent can't or won't get right, for various reasons. The elegant simplicity of standardising on 1 truck to perform multiple functions has so many innumerable benefits, it's a no brainer.
