Odunayaw: Are you new to nairaland mate? We have different set of people, a few are given to kak spewing. The antipathy isn't a general thing no? Precisely because I have been lurking here for a long time, I know the antipathy isn't a general thing. That's why I very carefully didn't tar everyone with the same brush, but very deliberately said "some people". Now, I've observed the chest-puffing nonsense which deserves to be ignored; but I'm bewildered when people who didn't partake in such - and from I expect better - excrete same. When people who've always evinced a better informed perspective suddenly spew uninformed rubbish, one is entitled to ask for the reasoning behind the opinion, no? I'd rather be called naive than establish people's motivations. P.S. [kak spewing]: we'll make a Saffa out of you yet! |

Can someone please explain to me the antagonism against South Africa, expressed by some in this thread? I follow about 30 military sites around the world - mostly based in countries which buy SA defence hardware - and all run all sorts of stories about SA. But it is mostly here that I read uninformed antipathy.
For example: Nigeria bought about 40 REVA APCs and neglected to include on-going and future maintenance and spare parts in the final contract. Those vehicles have been run to the ground. Ordinarily the fault would be abscribed to the buyer, but I've seen instances where the manufacturer is being blamed.
Never mind that REVA APCs are still going and performing superbly in Yemen, Iraq, Somalia, Egypt, Thailand, UAE, Iraqi Kurdistan, Equatorial Guinea and various US police SWAT teams.
So what's the carping really about? |

kikuyu1: Its still useful imo, but the Mwari is more of an anti poaching/ border security platform than true tactical AC with its limited payload. Six hard points (1 200kg) on the Mwari vs five (1 500kg) on the Tucano, for example. Am not indulging in the folly of straight comparisons; just illustrating my befuddlement at limited payload. |

Odunayaw: We can set up like Brigade/Battalion recon teams/platoons. They'd recon routes up at least 25km from the base, doing as many 7 days in the field.
However, for the known danger lands, I wonder why they're not using SF guys to shift the balance. A 2month 'small offensive' of SF doing harassing attacks in the enemy's rear. Keeping them unbalanced Redolent of the FireForce concept developed and put to devastating effect in my part of our continent. I gather you're a scholar of militaria and therefore au fait with the tactic. |

kikuyu1: Finally, the first cleansheet twin turbo attack plane since the OV 10 came out in the late 60s.
The TAV,Tactical Air Vehicle is the product of Icarus Aerospace,an outfit established only in 2016 in Quebec.

Ofc,this is all on paper. If it were me I'd have a pair of double barrelled 23mm on each wing capable of -5 degree depression and a centreline turret mounted double barrelled 30mm,180 degree capable slaved to a gymbal mounted electro optical sight. All in all a nice package, though I see nothing on price which should be 10-12 mn$. I can't think why this didn't come out sooner!
Edit: I'd have gone for a side by side cockpit. Easier cross communication under the stress of live fire. Btw,nemesis8u, are your HAL guys too tied up do their own indig version? In a WORLD of COIN and LICs this is just what the doctor ordered! Fyi max speed is almost 700 kph! Hard to hit in a low level pass with a BMG.
Compare with OV 10 with a centreline turret upon which I'd stick a 30mm recoil mitigation measures permitting . Is it just me or..... Pains me that Paramount wasted 2 years in court shenanigans and now this Icarus will eat Mwari's lunch! |

nemesis8u:

What has denel got to do here
Mahindra had a JV named DLSI with BAE systems which developed the above MPV (2010)
At that time BAE systems had a South African subsidiary known as Land Systems OMC (2004) and later renamed as BAE Systems Land Systems South Africa who provided consultancy/technology as per BAE systems work share in the DLSI JV. Testing was done at their facilities in SA. Plus some components were sourced at that time from BAE systems SA.
Later Mahindra bought out the shares of BAE systems in the DLSI JV along with the rights (2013) , much before BAE systems sold OMC to denel (2015).
And also denel was blacklisted till 2018. Thought Denel also got the rights when they bought back Land Systems SA. Wasn't aware Mahindra also bought the rights when buying out BAE. |

The major problem with "discussions" on this thread is because proper definitions haven't been settled. People throw around concepts and talk past each other. |
