zendy: Oh please,Awolowo was parading himself as the leader of the Yoruba people and probably rightfully was. The only thing standing in his way of pulling the west out of Nigeria where a few thousand illiterate soldiers in Ikeja Barrak led by Gowon and Murutala who were more or less surrounded by the majority Yorubas. I will never know why a man like Awolowo who knew how northern soldiers and civilians alike were murdering easterners in such gruesome ways as decapitations and disembowelment could turn around and think "people capable of such depravity are just exactly the right people for the Yorubas to be in the same nation" Was this man thinking straight at the time? He could have gone underground and made a declaration urging the Yoruba people to seize Lagos ,arrest Gowon and Murutala and declare the Oduduwa nation. Instead,he did what all the other leaders of the time except Ojukwu did. He accepted Northern domination. As for my saying that the typical Yoruba man cannot be trusted,we Igbos and Yorubas share the same sentiments about each other,it's nothing new.
Beautiful. Awolowo made a blundering mistake not to take Oduduwa people out of Nigeria. The Northern leaders couldn't have handled a Lagos take over
Jonathan might be a clueless wreck but buhari is a skilful carefree thief and Islamist enemy of the South His only ambition is to looth Nigeria some more
Yh maybe all tribes in Africa had things written one way or the other but nt history.
I haven't come across any book on history of Africa with any African writting system Wat I know of are calculations, basic instructions and ritual stuff In Yoruba society All these cults have their markings which serve as coded writing system on wood, ivory and plain divination boards but nothing like a piece on history, all history is told orally
ROSSIKE: Ever heard of the Timbuktu manuscripts? It comprises 700,000 manuscripts written by black Africans from as early as the 11th century. Other manuscripts exist on the continent. Kindly retract your ignorant comment.
And in what language is the Timbuktu manuscript written? Arabic- hence after being influenced by Arabs and probably forced to tale a false tale So still this is no evidence by the Op's logic which you greatly support Btw the Malian written records speak of slavery
thoth: You should read my earlier posts to understand my stand, i think the OP made a mistake by not defining slavery in the context which his arguments were presented, but if we are to cull our definition entirely from the European assault on continental Africa and therefore our conclusions formed thereof then i can say that slavery does not exist before the advent of Europeans.
Still u nt clear.
Did slavery exist in Africa before Europeans came or not? That's wat I ask ur opinion on nt all this long yarns u posting
thoth: my stance since creation of this thread is to observe and hopefully could learn and get new infomation from many whom are more enlightened on this particular issue ,but their are grave assumptions which cannot just be allowed to slide or else we will be trapped in that same quagmire which we are seeking to be free of. First our forefathers were not barbarians, they built great societies and such cannot possibly play the role the Europeans ascribed to them. Secondly slavery in African terms is different from slavery in European terms so it is important that the two never be considered the same and for clarity sake;factoring what the term "slavery" has come to mean(Entirely European concept) it is acceptable to say that MOST of Africa never practiced slavery and the concept is entirely European.
thirdly, that slavery in the real European context would have never been known in Africa if we never had any contact with Europeans , no market exists without a demand (2nd statement still applies), syllogically Slavery, the market, the sustainance was entirely a European creation and such systems never existed before the advent of Europeans.
now tell me among all the references you made that which did not agree with at least two of the above statements and by extension the OP.
So you don't deny slavery in Africa u jst oppose the European kind of slavery?
GenBuhari: All you have said, you got from history books written for you by the European historians.
All said about the Ooni descending from slaves is also meaningless without written historical records from our ancestors to verify this was before the arrival of the white man.
Sorry but oral history cannot be deemed reliable. Anybody could claim they heard anything also it does not record the dates of events. nothing passed down orally is verifiable evidence. That is why it is meaningless
Then by ur logic sub Saharan Africa has no history because any historical material u find predating white man is oral So if u have a problem with written history, which began say 20th century by blacks on their ethnic groups and also have a problem with oral history from cults like Ifa and Ogboni then nothing can satisfy u nt even archaeological findings cus you would say it was planted recently
You have hatred for caucasians, hatred is good but u letting it take away ur sense of reason and human sanity which is very bad
You.only making a fool of the black race, funny you might be a white shiit lickee trying to embarrass black people indirectly cus ur comments are outright insults to the blacks since you ur implied we have no history
malvisguy212: God did not created man to be religeous,God created a being that wuld express love for each other, and to worship him, christians is like a nickname giving to someone that behave as christ.God did not mention the name christian in his mouth,it is the people ,when they saw the good behaviour of the disciple,it remind them of jesus christ, so they nickname the disciples christians. God just want a relationship with us that why he created man. Christianity is not a religion.in all religieon, salvation is attain by human effort, but in christianity,it is the free gift of God"it is finish" the work has been done, your own is to believe and be saved.
stop saying God, jst say Jehovah so we know what God you talking about clearly
GenBuhari: Yes really! Provide the ancient historical records of our ancestors to prove your point! Do not forget Africans have had hundreds of years of Europeans controlling the history we teach in our schools so oral traditions are very meaningless. Can you present "oral tradition" as evidence in a court of law? have you heard of "chinese whispers"?
Because the Mobee family want to make money from tourism they can say whatever they want. Forget their relics, let them produce authentic historical records that show that they kept slaves before the arrival of the first white man.
The accounts of the Africans who were shipped can only be relevant if these account are from the first few shipments of Africans i.e from around the 15th Century. Because if they were from after Africa had been conquered, you cannot say a colonised people can freely sell slaves to their colonial masters.
Who is telling lies? I am simply saying that version of history we have been told must be rejected unless it is coming from our own authentic ancient historical records.
Who allows their enemy to write their history for them?
If you have any authentic source of ancient African historical records kept by our ancestors then drop the link here and let us check it out.
Oral history is meaningless. you fool in ur bid to make blacks look good and ridicule caucasians u jst embarrassed the entire sub-Saharan Africa that strives on orally told history to preserve our legacy and heritage
If oral history is meaningless then what evidence do u have that Africans weren't active slave traders? Ur own history? Lol these racists have started again...thinking they making the black race better by bashing caucasians with lies..you no better than the white man you so accuse of treachery
As a Yoruba man, I can tell u the Ooni is descended from a slave woman owned by Oduduwa's household even Odu Ifa speaks of this...there's ur authentic history there of a period when Caucasians only dreamt of West Africa
Pls ignore this ^^^ probably had too much to drink
this is basic fact for a man who has lived almost all his life in Lagos. Lagos is a home state to many people, some of my best friends...from Ikorodu to downtown Eko it's like saying California is no mans land or London is no mans land
Such ignorant illiterates particular Igbos with an agenda
malvisguy212: you can be a good person, but you cant interpret good for God,bible say the wisdom of God which passes all understanding shall abide in you, this mean God wisdom is more than your understanding.
Christianity is not a religion.
Another sweet pointer to the atheist argument: Good is objective, wat is good for ur God, Jehovah is bad for the Islamic God Allah and so other religions Bottomline you going to all hells except the Christian one
In other words the Christian God...here's the very point of many atheist argument
Bigotry is the gift of religion, from there comes hate and disunity and finally betrayal and outright downfall of nations This happened to Oyo, Persia, Ethiopia, Benin, Congo Learn from history
Why would God use someone like you to minster to atheists?
Many of the atheists here are far more intelligent than you (judging by posts/arguments/philosophical threads) and so, why should they just accept your preaching on good faith?
How are you different from an illiterate trying to convince an educated man that a pagan god will strike him with thunder?
UyiIredia: All that genius from a person who adopted a purposeless worldview. Purposeless because atheism inevitably denies the basis of purpose in humans: the spirit (or mind). In any case, I can begin to understand Ingersoll's gripe with the church. I had grievances of my own too. But his atheism, I can't because between the universe and life (esp humans) in it the question of God's existence shouldn't even be debated.
Ganjafama: One day you'll look back and regret all this trash you're spewing. One thing I believe is the fact that satan is evil himself, and evil is wrong. Worshipping satan is spiritually wrong because he's evil.
How can you be sure satan is evil? What evil did he commit in the story bookBible
MetaPhysical: NOTE TO PREXIOS When opening topics for discussion will you kindly indicate if its for intellectual deep dive or just to banter words on the surface.
Macof, please go back to reading Homer and leave Yoruba topics alone. You are educated but you lack insight and the depth of understanding needed to discuss Yoruba culture and customs, arts and myths.
This topic is not for textbook scholars. OP is asking a question that you can never find in any classroom or online materials. It will take people who have understanding of the root words contained in Y-O-R-U-B-A to get to bottom if it, and if you cannot connect the link between Agboniregun and Aborigene, I doubt very much you can make headway with what OP is requesting.
Excuse yourself from this topic my friend!
Lol this is jst a simple thing. you have a belief like a religion that "Yoruba" is from Yoruba language against the general public without proof...you speak Yoruba don't u? So why nt tell us the meaning already and save us the trouble?
I see, so you are the almighty authority on Yoruba arts, culture and myths yet you don't know Agboniregun
Fulaman198: Everything you said here is completely wrong. We migrated from Northwest Africa, not Northeast. There is nothing Afro-Asiatic about us that is oyibo man nonsense.
Fulani language (Pular/Fulfulde) is 90% similar to Serer language and 75% similar to Wolof.
Many aboriginal groups in the Sahel like the Zarma/Dendi/Songhai which are all the same group with different names or the Nilotic people in Southern Sudan like the Dinka and Nuer all have similar cultures to us the Fulani. However, there are differences as well. Islam is a main component to some Fulani clans, to some clans it is not. The Mbororo'en Fulani don't want anything to do with Islam, as a result they practise the most traditional Fulani culture today which is purely and completely African. No outside influence whatsoever.
Don't a very large population of fulani clans have Berber afro, asiatic ancestry from Northwest Africa? This Niger-congo stuff is not pure jare
MetaPhysical: You dont understand Hausa language, can't even decode and break Yoruba to its roots in Hausa language but yet you maintain Yoruba was donated from Hausa language.
Can you then explain the disparity in naming of neighbouring peoples with BA and why Oyo was skipped and given YO.?
Even Hausa call himself BAHAUSHE, in the order and protocol of naming people.
So if Hausa is the origin of YORUBA, don't you owe some explanation here?
Says the man who claims to understand Yoruba language but can't decode a word he claims to be Yoruba Claim claim claim Enough of this...an intelligent theory is welcome but then carrying ur theory all around with such aggression without any basis only gets u to make a fool of urself
I don't owe any explanation because this is general knowledge which you know of, it's u bringing up something new that needs to Iexplain I read you also have another one That Yoruba means Europa so now we are Europeans?
Between Agboniregun and Aborigene, who donated the name to the other?
When an English person call people Aborigenes, does this mean Agboniregun never existed as a name amongst Yorubas?
Does Clapperton publishing Yoruba to refer to Oyo people mean the word YORUBA never existed amongst the Oyo people prior to that?
Wtf is this? Wat has Agboniregun got to do with this?
Agboniregun was the chief of Oketase(the holy community of Ifa Practise world wide) during oduduwa's reign where did u get ur aborigine/Agboniregun link from?
So any two words that mean absolutely nothing alike automatically become cognates and etymologically linked.because they sound alike?
ROSSIKE: More than likely it's both, ie there was an aboriginal group from which Yorubas, other ethnic groups and ancient Egyptians sprang, and also that groups of ancient migrants from dynastic (or post dynastic) Egypt settled in Yorubaland and elsewhere in the West African forest regions following political upheavals. There is fulsome testimony of this in Yoruba oral history, and there are certain practices shared by both groups suggesting more recent contact after the initial dispersals.
Well your theory seems intelligent and probable but as for saying there are testimonies in Yoruba oral history, that's jst bull There's no reference to migration from Egypt in any Yoruba tale And the similar practices you speak of where those practiced in pre-dynastic upper Egypt...nothing recent is of spectacular similarities Don't add lies
2prexios: Hello macof pal, tis been a while chatting with you, cute intellectual. Alright no bribing: please check where Oyo was before Aole, record has it that its 50 miles? to present site {will update this later} its across the Niger. Yoruba is not an Hausa word: Clapperton got Yarba from sultan Bello, then he got Yorrouba? tranversing Yorubaland with Denham and Richard Lander in 1825. Because a man can answer a question on the street of Oyo about the name Yoruba does not make them an authority. At Ado, we have ABIYO (a bi yo: Oyo camp) so I dont worship Oyo or Ife.
50miles from where? Definitely if you want answers about Oyo ur best bet is to speak to an Oyo man who was born and trained in the traditions I haven't seen anybody say "Yoruba" is originally a word from Yoruba language before this thread
People all over the world get to be known by the names others call them...so there's nothing degrading in a Hausa turned Yoruba origin of our ethnic nomenclature
another funny thing is, it might not be Hausa but Bariba, nupe or Kanuri language. All that is sure is that it came from some northern people- which everyone these days tag as Hausa
2prexios: On point meta, its like saying 'look to Arewa to decode Oyo'. Why not look to Oyo instead? Cos you already have element of 'Yo' serving as prefix and sufix both in Yoruba and Oyo. Ancient Yoruba says 'a gbede gb'eyo' to mean a very versatile person on the job, but agbede-gbeyo literally means 'one who understand codes and Eyo tongue'. So which is Ede, which is EYO? The term Oyo is like landmark to measure the frontiers of old Yoruba as starting out at old Oyo (Niger state) to Eyo (Lagos).
Look to oyo you say? no Oyo man would tell u anything different from this "the name Yoruba was derived from wat the Hausa speakers called the Oyo empire"
no one said "oyo" so don't twist things here. Oyo was coined by Oranmiyan himself But we talking "Yoruba"
Old Oyo-ile was in Oyo state along the boarders of Kwara state not Niger state
