The answers,

1. Michael Crichton
2. Charles Dickens
3. Barbara Cartland
4. Clive Cussler
5. Umberto Eco
6. Thomas Harris
7. Dean Koontz
8. Sidney Sheldon
Oh man. The other authors completely threw me. I like that. But I'm not a Barbara Cartland fan. Willowy witless beauties overwhelmed by darkly handsome aristocrats who freely dispense satanic leers and cruel, punishing kisses. Or is that M&B? Not sure. But don't go near those.

I do not know much about the biography of Dickens, but do you know any other book you might have studied in school that has a young character who asks for more (other than Oliver Twist)? If there is such other book, then it might be that other author and I would have been wrong to say Dickens [but I doubt I am].
I wasn't referring to your post. You likely got it right. I was wondering if the author's an aristocrat as mentioned in the puzzle. What does it matter sef? The guy don quench. Wondered how his stories fare today. Some of his characters are so idealised they make you grit your teeth. When he manages to give you a happy ending, you know it's BS but you don't give a rat's twisted tail. And it's SO nice for poor Oliver to get what he deserves.

Saw that smirk in Wanted. She isn't the greatest actress of all time and I'm not really a fan- she's done too many silly movies for me to take her seriously , but she's a humanist, which is more than I can say for a lot of these powerful but self-absorbed celebrities. It's nice to see actors like her so committed to issues and causes.
LiteratureRe: The Literature Fun Thread - Stephen King Fans! Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid by MadMax1(f): 5:31pm On Oct 08, 2008
Was Charles Dickens an aristocrat? Naw. I faintly recall reading that his background to Oliver Twist was furnished by his own WorkHouse experiences when his very poor father was sent to debtor's prison over a ridiculous amount. It was a trauma he never forgot and quite got over, poor chile.

Not enough to guess the answers,V, but methinks number 1 is Michael Crichton, 6 is Thomas Harris and  7 is Dean Koontz. I'm not sure I can place him second to anyone. Yes, I loved The Stand and The Dark Tower Series (Wizard and Glass, the fourth instalment, is simply breathtaking). King is to modern horror writing what Asimov was to science fiction.  But Koontz's stories are truly extraordinary. I can't say who the better writer is.

But the most horrific book I have ever read, has to be The Dark by  James Herbert. King does not even come close to this guy. I read the book in my teens and it almost gave me a complex!

More clues,V.
TV/MoviesRe: What Series Are You Watching Now? by MadMax1(f): 4:28pm On Oct 07, 2008
CSI on DVD. The first season was merely okay. The incriminating evidence lay about a little too easy for me. But the second season is blowing me away. Greater depth to the characters, the plot more intense and often deeply psychological, and sometimes there are no easy answers. Loved the character of Lady Heather in the S&M call girl murder.
Loved the theme music by THE WHO: Who are you. Already bought Season 3.

Having a great time.

TV/MoviesRe: Which Movie Character Would You Play? by MadMax1(f): 4:05pm On Oct 07, 2008
You and I have unfinished business,

Kiddo (The Bride)/Uma Thurman- KILL BILL

Juliette Binoche or Kristin Scott Thomas in THE ENGLISH PATIENT: I get to sleep with Naveen Andrews or Ralph Fiennes.

Julian Moore in ASSASSINS: I get near Antonio Banderas, who is, so far, the most dangerously sexy assassin I've ever seen.

Any female in THE LAST SAMURAI:A chance for a party with Ken Watannabe and Shin.

Sex on the brain.

Would love to play Nicole Kidman in THE HOURS. Admired the quiet desperation and intensity of her character. Or her Satine in MOULIN ROUGE. Any female in AMERICAN BEAUTY. Ja
Christianity EtcRe: Falling Under Anointing - Hoax, Real Or Hypnosis? by MadMax1(f): 5:00pm On Sep 29, 2008
I've never fallen under 'the annointing'. But believe me I have been in places where I discerned the presence of God, well someone, to an extraordinary degree.
So I know there is an 'annointing' or a 'mantle'. But falling under it? Never happened to me. I guess those who fall have long been conditioned to do so, and might actually have some sort of 'experience', cooked up by their religiously overwrought and overwhelmed psyches.

Finally saw The Dark Knight.
Ledger wasn't menacing at first.
And then, quite suddenly, he was.
Is his performance at par with the miracle he wrought in Brokeback Mountain? Not by a long shot. Should it be nominated for an Oscar? Perhaps. Should he win? No.
But- What a villain.

The Dark Knight is about the choices a hero must make, and shows how those choices can sometimes issue from the darkness in the psyche of every human being, even a hero's. Grim and multi-layered, the movie elevates the superhero genre. It's not Best Picture Material but it's one heck of an action movie. Darkly satisfying.

FamilyRe: Ever Lost Someone As Dear As Family? Come Light A Candle For Them Here by MadMax1(f):
I light candles and envelope the universe in light for my youngest brother. You were one of the funniest, weirdest and warmest human beings it's been my privilege to know and adore, and I miss you so much I cannot tell you. I miss your inventive cheating, our talks and your dreams, and your craziness, and your stubborness and your wacky humour and your conceit over your good looks and your unbelieveable niceness. It was your deep and unusual compassion for others that undergirded our bond, and today and always I wonder why I didn't go instead of you. I wish I could have. I love you so much. I miss you so much. We all do. You left us all heartbroken.

RomanceRe: Should I Let Go Of Him? by MadMax1(f): 5:31pm On Sep 24, 2008
Oh Nance, I'm heartbroken. This guy doesn't love you, but since he's your first it's going to be the battle of your life to actually let him go. You might decide you will, until he comes over and your heart melts and you lie to yourself that he really loves you, and you stay with him. Till he breaks your heart. And he will, Nancy. Leave now, while you're in a position of strength. It will be terribly hard, the hardest thing you've ever done, but have a game plan. Surround yourself with friends and activities. You'll think of him, and you'll want to call him, but gradually, you'll forget him, and then you'll start wondering what you ever saw in him. I've never had a bad experience with guys, and actually have more of them as friends than females because they're so focussed and life is more than marriage and babies and the latest stuff, but I do have girlfriends who've been in bad relationships and I learnt from them. NEVER date a man who lies to you. However hurtful, the truth is always best. You deserve a relationship of mutual respect and trust and emotional integrity. Attempt great things with your life, and it will attract the most incredible men. Believe me,the right one will come along. Let the liar go, Nance.
RomanceRe: Is it True That Ladies From Divorced Parent Are Not Submissive And Reliable? by MadMax1(f): 5:19pm On Sep 24, 2008
So he came up against some silly prejudices. Most parents have them. Some will warn you to stay away from certain tribes and you wonder wth? It's up to your friend to gently show his parents divorce and submissivemess, whatever that means, are not related. Poor girl. She must've been so upset, and unnecessarily too.
RomanceRe: Im In Love With My Step- Brother: What Should I Do? by MadMax1(f): 5:07pm On Sep 24, 2008
I don't know how old both of you are. It would really say a lot. We sometimes don't choose who we fall for. It just happens. But there's something willful and very knowing about you and your post. If you go into this it's because you want to. Your parents are married. You might want to set aside your infatuation and think about the long-term consequences of this. You're related by marriage, but not by blood, so I don't think it's incest. But it's disturbing that, given that the world is full of wonderful men, you had to choose this one. And you did choose this. We've all had crushes on cool  cousins and other relatives. But that doesn't mean we follow through on those feelings and encourage them, like you did. With time, those feelings pass. And how would your parents feel about it anyways? Will it damage their relationship with you and with each other? Weigh the consequences. If you decide gratifying your infatuation- and it's very powerful, that- is worth risking anything for, go right ahead.

Your thing for Watanabe? Your thing? Take your hands off my man! I, most reluctantly, dash you Johhny Depp- he's so intense- but Watanabe: NOOOO!!!!!! Got any nice pics of Johhny? He's madly talented, isn't he? He's everything.  Vanessa Paradis is officially the Luckiest Woman on Earth.

Dees ees odd. I had a brief thing for Day Lewis in the Last of the Mohicans too! Okay, my slutty self kept gravitating between him and his strong silent type Indian brother, just like I keep gravitating between Watanabe and Shin Koyamada in The Last Samurai. I'm in love with the 'father' and infatuated with the 'son'- he's so adorable, so male and so strong and yet so child-like and so likeable. Delicious males all.

Jim is the mole. He's a sellout, in cahoots with his wife. He's marketing the NOC list, which lists the real names and aliases of every agent in the world, to the highest bidder. Kittridge is an IMF department head who  thinks the mole is Ethan because he's the only one who appears to have survived a wipe out of all his team members. To find the real mole, Ethan steals the real NOC list- the one with Jim is fake- on the condition that the buyer makes certain he and the mole meet at the drop-off point: a train. They do meet, and it's Jim. But he's met Jim earlier and seen through the ruse, and has arranged for IMF members, including Kittridge, to be on the train to apprehend Jim.
He says goodbye to IMF in a way, but on the plane he is apparently presented with yet another mission.  The darned movie is pretty straightforward.
