Six female Christian teenagers, who disguised with hijabs as Muslims, and an alleged male agent of human traffickers, Innocent Godfrey, 20, have been arrested by the police in Edo State. The teenagers: Success Okogbowa, 17, Gift Osabuohien, 18, Endurance Edigho, 18, Gift Edigho, 17, Oghayero, 19, and Happiness Oliver, 16, and Godfrey were billed to travel to Cote d’Ivoire and Libya. Edo Commissioner of Police, Phillip Ogbadu, yesterday at the state’s police headquarters in Benin paraded the victims of human trafficking and their agent. Ogbadu disclosed that the teenagers were intercepted on Thursday by the police at Isihor check point in Benin, on the ever- busy Benin-Lagos Road. He noted that the victims, who were from Delta, Edo and Enugu states, but all residing in Edo state, were recruited for the journey by Godfrey’s elder sister. Edo police commissioner revealed that men of the command were able to intercept the teenagers and their agent, following intelligence report. He said: “It is a case of human trafficking. They will be handed over to officials of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), for rehabilitation.” Godfrey disclosed that the teenagers’ journey was arranged by her unnamed elder sister, for someone in Libya. He said: “I am not the one conveying them. I am going to Libya, while they are going to Cote d’Ivoire. We were arrested by the police at the check point in Isihor. I am not the one trafficking the girls. The person that is trafficking them is in Libya and he paid money to sponsor the girls.” One of the teenagers, Endurance Edigho, disclosed that they were recruited by Godfrey’s elder sister, at a birthday party of one of their friends. Edigho said: “She (Godfrey’s elder sister) asked if I would like to travel out of Nigeria and that the available works are cleaning, house help and prostitution. I told her that I would prefer being a house help and she asked me to join them. We went to the house of the person that would take us on the journey and we stayed there for three days. We were arrested on Thursday at the police check- point. On searching our vehicle by policemen, they found Indian hemp with one of the boys in the vehicle and took us to the police station.” https://thenationonlineng.net/human-trafficking-police-rescue-six-christian-teenagers-in-hijab-male-agent/ mynd44 oam4j lalasticlala seun |

Shortly before the Eid-el-Kabir festival celebration in July, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) in Nigeria published a report announcing that an estimated 8.7 million people in North-east Nigeria would need some form of humanitarian assistance in 2021. The report added that about 6.4 million of this figure are targeted to receive aid as part of the UN and partners’ humanitarian response plan. But it said that as of June 17, the plan was less than 20 per cent funded. It was in response to similar challenges, among other reasons, that a Malaysian charity organisation, Yayasan Budi Ihsan Malaysia (YBIM), instituted a humanitarian intervention programme for the underprivileged families during Eid-el-Kabir festival in the country in 2021. A Nigeria-based humanitarian group- As- Safa Educational Foundation, has, therefore, commended YBIM for what it described as its support towards lifting poor Nigerian Muslim homes during the just concluded festival. The group, in an appreciation message to the charity organisation, and signed by the secretary of the celebration committee, Salami Mutiu, a PhD holder and lecturer in a Malaysian university, said a total of 4,000 heads of cattle and 2,000 goats were shared to the underprivileged communities across 15 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to mark the celebration in July. The statement added that the humanitarian programme is part of its contributions towards extending the joy of the festival to more homes. The group noted that due to various reasons including insecurity and the accompanying economic challenges, many families in the country are unable to feed without assistance. The statement added that it is in fulfilment of the teachings of Islam to give the havenots that the intervention was introduced and thanked the donor for sustaining the programme. The statement reads in part: “With the blessings of Allah SWT. We are very thankful to Yayasan Budi Ihsan Malaysia for being able to organise this meaningful, humanitarian, yearly Kembara Qurban (sacrificial programme) in celebration of Eid- ul-Adha. “This year, 4,000 heads of cows, and 2,000 goats were slaughtered in. The meat was distributed to about 1.1 million Muslim families in Nigeria across Borno, Bauchi, Taraba, Gombe, Kaduna, Abuja, Kwara, Osun, Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti and Lagos States. “This year marks the second year running we collaborated with As-Safa Educational Foundation in Nigeria based on its sincerity, trustworthiness and honesty in helping to reach the needy and underprivileged Muslims living in hardship especially the underprivileged orphans and the homeless. We really hope and pray to Allah SWT that this program will continue in many more years to come.” The group said the intervention would also further foster ties between Nigeria and the Asian country. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/477927-group-hails-malaysian-organisation-for-lifting-nigerian-muslims-with-4000-cattle.html mynd44 oam4j lalasticlala seun |

The Lagos State House of Assembly, has amended the state Pension Law for former governors and other political office holders, reducing their benefits and emoluments by 50 per cent. The House approved the recommendations sequel to the presentation of the report by the Chairman, House Committee on Establishment, Training and Pension, Yinka Ogundimu, during plenary. Mr Ogundimu, representing Agege II, said the committee reduced their benefits and other emoluments by 50 per cent, based on the present economic situation of the state. The lawmaker added that it had expunged the provision of houses in Abuja and Lagos for former governors, as stipulated in an earlier law operated by the state. He said that the committee report presented to the House further showed a reduction in the number of vehicles to be made available to former governors and their deputies. The speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, however, suggested that the former governors should get two vehicles (a car and a van) instead of the three recommended by the committee. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/ssouth-west/477820-lagos-assembly-slashes-pension-for-tinubu-fashola-other-ex-governors-by-50.html?fb mynd44 oam4j lalasticlala seun |

An inspector attached to Orsu Police station in Imo Police was killed on Thursday during a heavy bombardment during a gun duel with hoodlums. The hoodlums, who stormed the police station around 9.35pm, threw explosives and petrol bombs on the roofs of the police station, causing a fire outbreak which damaged vehicles parked in the station. Imo Police spokesman, CSP Michael Abattam, in a statement on Friday said three of the bandits were also killed in the crossfire. He said: “The command’s tactical teams on ground engaged the bandits in a gun duel. And due to the superior firepower of the police, the bandits were subdued. “Three of the bandits were neutralised and their guns, one pump action gun, and two locally-made double barrel pistols were recovered while others escaped into the bush with bullet wounds. Unfortunately, a police inspector lost his life in the attack.” He appealed to Orsu community to assist the police with credible information that will lead to the arrest of the escaped bandits and to report any person seen with or treating bullet wounds. He also advised hospitals to report any person who comes to them for treatment of bullet wounds. https://thenationonlineng.net/hoodlums-kill-police-inspector-bomb-station-in-imo/ mynd44 oam4j lalasticlala seun |

Violence against women plus children is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today remains largely unreported due to the impunity, silence, stigma and shame surrounding it. Sex violence is becoming so rampant and the government has to do something about it i think castration would 've been the better options for defaulters. Lalasticlala mynd44 |
The United States of America has invested the sum of $15 million in the fight against Gender-based violence (GBV) in Nigeria. This was announced by the Deputy Chief of Mission, US Embassy, Kathleen FitzGibbon, while presenting a keynote address during the “MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership Activity Launch” on Tuesday in Abuja. “This $15 million investment will strengthen Gender- based violence response mechanisms, help communities transform discriminatory gender and social norms that continue to subordinate women and make them vulnerable, and uphold and defend women’s health and human rights. “It will amplify women’s voices and agency and reduce their vulnerability to violence,” FitzGibbon said. The “MOMENTUM country and global leadership activity”, administered by the U.S. Agency for International Development, will work to increase access to services for survivors of Gender-based violence in Sokoto and Ebonyi states, she said. “Over the next five years, USAID will work with government and institutions to address primary contributors to maternal mortality and morbidity through the prevention and mitigation of the consequences of violence against women and girls and drivers of early and forced child marriage,” FitzGibbon added. Prof Yemi Osibanjo, Nigeria’s Vice President, who officially launched the programme, said the government would continue to condemn Gender-Based Violence (GBV), “so long as it continues to impact negatively on survivors, victims, families, broader society and economies of Nations.” He said President Mohammadu Buhari had directed the Inspector- General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, to deal with all perpetrators of GBV in furtherance of the declaration of Zero tolerance to Rape and other Gender-Based Violence.https://dailytrust.com/us-donates-15m-to-fight-gender-based-violence-in-nigeria mynd44 oam4j lalasticlala seun |

The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a worse turn with the resignation of seven national officers of the opposition party. The party’s National Organising Secretary, Colonel Austin Akobundu (retd), confirmed the resignation on Tuesday but did not go into details. Uche Secondus, National Chairman of the party, whose tenure ends in December, has been under intense pressure to step down. The National Chairman even fell out with Nyesom Wike, his benefactor, who criticised him publicly. Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State had made efforts to reconcile the duo but it is unclear if that yielded the desired result. Before the misunderstanding with Wike, Kassim Afegbua, a PDP chieftain from Edo State, had called on Secondus to step down over his handling of the party affairs. He had accused him of corruption and even filed a suit against him. Secondus had also sued Afegbua for defamation. The PDP has been hit by a wave of defections, especially of some of its governors in the last three months. Governors David Umahi (Ebonyi), Ben Ayade (Cross River), and Bello Matawalle (Zamfara) had left the party for the All Progressives Congress (APC). This made some of the party members to lose confidence in the leadership of Secondus. In July, a member of the House of Representatives, Rimamnde Shawulu, asked Secondus to resign for failing to halt the flow of defections. Kola Ologbondiyan, spokesman of the opposition party, was not available for comments as of the time this report was filed.https://dailytrust.com/pdp-crisis-worsens-as-7-national-officers-resign mynd44 oam4j lalasticlala seun |
