Pretending to know what you don't and making things as you go is the name of the game. . . Back in the days the ancient men that created the religions and gave us the concept of the soul all thought that reasoning, emotions and thoughts all come from the heart based on the simple fact that when you are anxious, tensed, angry or agitated you heart beats faster . . .They didn't know that the human brain is responsible for thought, reasoning and emotions and controls all functions of the body both voluntary and involuntary. . . .

embarassed embarassed  I just shake my head at the things I come across on this forum and I really wonderin what  planet some of these posters are living,

I remember that economics was a compulsory course in junior secondary school . I remember that economics deals primarily with wealth: how it is created and how it distributed and managed. From a simple study of secondary school economics it becomes obvious to a thinking person that wealthy nations produce more wealthy individuals and not visa versa. Also , that natons become wealthy based on how efficiently they organise and allocate both their natural and human resources. Period. I dont remember reading about who is a child of god and who not a child of god. Unless the laws of economics have changed,  there are no "Hail marys" about economics and the prosperity of nations and individuals.
For anyone who is old enough to remember, there was a time when a mid level civil servant, christian, muslim, religious or not, could afford to build a house, drive a car and train his children to any educational level. This was in the sixties and seventies. Since the early 80s  our economy tanked and our standard of living have followed in the same direction ever since.
Eversince, the means of producing wealth and prosperity have gradually faded from our landscape as factories and warehouses have long given way to mega churches(what an Irony). and ofcourse, everyone shouted halleluya.
I'm sure the Op has not made the connection between closed factories and increasing poverty.
People need to understand that There is nothing personal about poverty. According to yesterdays news, 80% of Nigerians are poor and there is nothing to corrolate this state of affairs with anyones religious belief.
Obviously, our past leaders have not done a good job of efficiently allocating and managing our vast natural and human resources.l
There are more poor people in poor countries. That is just common sense. Thats is why people from poor countries migrate to richer countries so that they too can have an opportunity to be comfortable or rich.
This idea of personalizing one's poor economic situation is just one of those gimmiks employed to exploit the vulnerable among us.
If you want to improve ur financial or economic situation, then get a skill. a markatable skill.
Stop the deciet and delusions.
Word brother. . .WORD!

This is one is for both sides and their arguements about Abraham's two sons. It seemed the "apostle formerly known as Saul" thought the story was an allegory too.

Galatians 4 21-31
Slave versus free
21 Tell me—those of you who want to be under the Law—don’t you listen to the Law? 22 It’s written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and one by the free woman. 23 The son by the slave woman was conceived the normal way, but the son by the free woman was conceived through a promise. 24 These things are an allegory: the women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, which gives birth to slave children; this is Hagar. 25 Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and she corresponds to the present-day Jerusalem, because the city is in slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother. 27 It’s written:
Is Paul or who ever wrote the story saying that the Abraham and his sons story is an allegory?. . .Some people will come here and be talking about the Abraham , Ishmael and Issac story as if they were there. . . .Delusion at its finest. . .

The more you know.

The jews already regard it as an allegory and the Catholics who stole the story even accept their "version" is an allegory. So what are we good old black folks waiting for? We have our heads buried in the sand and we willl continue to bleat about "original sin" and being "under grace" and not "under the law" and Jesus saving us from an allegory.

We are so smart!!!
The way some deluded Africans go about breaking the story, you will think they know what they are saying, some will even tell you that the jews that OWN the stories and traditions are wrong and do not know what they are talking about. . . .

You should have done your homework before posting such a very general description of the issues mentioned.
I did and that was why i started the topic. . . .

First off Torah and mainly orthodox Jews believe in the same story of creation as is succinctly laid out in the book of Genesis, while the Talmudic Jews and Kaba Jews may have different interpretations.
You just ran off tangent as usual without addressing anything that was raised. . . .No body is talking about the creation story, that is your own making. . .The bottom line is that the jews regardless of the sect they belong to do not share the same views of the garden of eden story with the christians. . .While the christians associate the story with the fall of man the jews do not. . .So my question remains valid, whose view of holds precedence that of the jews or christians?. . .

Also not all Christians believe in original sin, a small number of Christians along with Jews reject the concept of original sin. I personally believe in original sin , in that we are all born with a tendency to sin and without the atonement of Christ we are lost. We need a new birth to be free from sin.
Irrelevant, the conventional christian view of the eden story= fall of man, jews do not agree with that even though its from the same book. . .Jews do not believe in original sin and fall of man, while a large percentage of christians do. Whose interpretation should hold precedence? The Jewish view or the Christian one? Remember the parallel interpretations come from the same book and same stories. . .

In summary , your title is totally 'misroad' in that it is based on the fallacy that all Jews treat the bible as allegories and that Christians hold the same view of original sin.

get your facts right !!
Where exactly did i state that all jews treat the bible as allegories, i said they have no problems treating some of the stories as allegory while many christians do not. . . .
Christianity Etc › Authoritative View Of The Old Testament by mazaje(op): 5:50pm On Feb 15, 2012
Whose view of the old testament should be considered authoritative, that of the christians or jew? I say this because the two religions have very different views of the old testament. For example, the jews see the garden of eden story as man’s elevation to a moral sense and awareness, while christians  on the other hand see the eden story as the fall of man. Jews do not recognize and believe the original sin hypothesis while christians do and that is a great difference since both of them read from the same book.

I notice that jews do not completely regard the whole old testament as historical, they have no problem stating that some of the stories are allegories and not historical, but christians don't usually share that view. . .

Whose interpretation should be authoritative and hold precedence? That of the jews or Christians?

Uyi Iredia:
.

* Christians also encourage hard-work. You should be aware of Christian advocacy groups like SNG & CAN, charities, orphanages, micro-finance initiatives, community development initiatives & educational establishments by Christians. Do not dare make the asinine claim that this is not 'active Christianity'. Keep in mind that you have to show how Christianity actively encourages poverty, especially given my counter-arguments that Christian bodies undertake poverty-alleviation schemes.
Firstly the SNG is NOT a christian advocacy group. . .What are the christian micro finance initiatives and what exactly are their impact on the lives of the average christian Nigerian? How many people have such christian initiatives lifted out of poverty? Majority of christian based educational institutions in Nigeria like high schools and universities are NOT affordable to the average Nigerians even at that they still perform and rank below the federal university on all rankings that have been published despite the exorbitant prices they charge. I agree, there are christian initiatives but their impact is very minimal or completely absent in some cases and not felt by the people. . .Compare the money that these christian charities give out to the monies the churches take and and you will see the GREAT difference. . . .People are encouraged to give to churches in Nigeria more than anything. Last time I was dragged to church by my family members cos it was a thanks giving service and I was shocked at what I was hearing. . .

* You distort the Christian's position. Here it is: Prayer & Hard-work lead to success. Even at that, The Bible does not in any way pretend that people can't be successful without prayer. In Ecclesiastes, King Solomon talks of the sun shining on both believers & unbelievers. I suggest you read that book in the Bible. Apart from the mention of God, you should glean something from it. Also note, that Christians also believe in collectively striving to solve problems. Some of the aforesaid activities involve various denominations working to gather.
The Nigerian Christian position is PRAYERS ALONE in most cases, that is why you MOSTLY hear about break throughs, through offering of tithes, seed sowing fasting and and prayers. . . .Its very common practice in Nigerian churches to hear about seed sowing, paying of tithes as the magic bullet to financial success. . .If Nigerians on the avarage believe in prayers more than hard work, their statements on average confirms this. . .When something happens they first thing that comes out of their mouths is lets pray for this or that. . . You don't hear about steps that are to be taken to solve problems. . .The bible talks about prayers and hard work in some places and also talks about prayers and faith alone in other places. In the words of Jesus if you pray and believe what ever you ask for will be given to you. . .It didn't say pray and work hard, it saysjust pray and believe and what ever you ask for will be given to you. . . .So don't even start with the bible because its a book written by so many different people with different ideas and conception of who God is to them. . . .

* Your last statement is a based on the distortion mentioned above and hence is a non-starter. What Christians do is bring money from the proceeds of the start-up businesses as thanksgiving or reserve a portion of money meant for start-up businesses as an offering. BTW, you blatantly ignore the (sometimes extremist) religious practices in better-placed nations like Kuwait & Israel. Why don't you assert that the dominant religions there are responsible for the wealth of such nations ?
Many christians in Nigeria use money that is supposed to go towards the betterment of their lives to their various churches. . .Its only a person that is living in denial that will deny that fact. . . .I never said religion is the only problem we have in Nigeria, but the type of religion we practice in the country is killing the country at the same rate with corruption and tribalism and that is the fact. . . . Extremist religious practice is NOT encouraged in Israel because about 40% of the population is atheist, and a greater percentage are secular extremist are very few and have no impact on the country as a whole. . . .Kuwait is a homogeneous country when it comes to religion and tribe so their case is quite different. . . .

* I see ! You are blind to the fact that Christians & Muslims came out en masse to protest the fuel subsidy. You ignore religionists like Tunde Bakare, Gani Fawehinmi, Femi Falana, Festus Keyamo, even the Abami-Eda himself (i.e Fela). Now, did religion preclude their fight against corruption, each in his own unique way ? I submit to you that you'll ignore this question or present the canard that their actions stemmed despite religion.
What has the fact that Nigerians came out to protest an insensitive move that will destroy their lives and send them more into poverty got to do with religion?. . .Christians and muslims came out to fight for their survival which was something they had to do. . . .Where were the religious leaders during the fuel subsidy saga, most where in the churches and mosques telling people to pray for the leaders. . . .

Your bias once again blinds you. Here's how. You ignore that there are inter-faith marriages in the country; this is particularly common in Lagos as exemplified by the (immediate past & present) 'first couple' of Lagos. Fashola is a Muslim while his wife is a Christian; same went for BAT & his wife. You clearly gloss over the problems tribalism cause and go on to list the problems of religion (which I emboldened) which somehow boils down to the actions of Christians and what the Koran said.
Pls what is the percentage of inter faith marriages in Nigeria? It is still an anomaly and considered an abomination by MOST Nigerians, very few people inter marry across religious lines. . .You talk about inter marriages but fail to talk about people that have severed relationships with their family for converting to other religions or for even intermarrying across religious line. . .Its very common all over Nigeria on both sides. . .

I will be only to happy to school you on how religion played a role in stabilizing the polity of the pre-colonial Edos; I also wonder whether you ignore how Dan Fodio used Islam as a basis of uniting the Northerners, they may be 'backwards' but even Southerners envy the union of the Northerners (especially as exemplified by the Hausas).
And religion is presently about to destroy the country, no?. . . .BH is a religious movement that wants to force their religion on the whole country, which might eventual led to the destruction of the nation as we know if it not properly managed, no?. . . .

I hope you're familiar with the No True Scotsman fallacy. In this case, 'no-good religion' fallacy. How do you make the said fallacy ? I present a counter-example to your claim that religion causes problems (e.g tribalism). You admit it, then go on to highlight  the problems of religion. It is actions like this which convince me of my posit that Atheism is a religion. Just so you (and other Nairalanders) know I have modified that posit.
Religion is NOT the only problem Nigeria is facing, we have very high level of corruption, tribalism, lack of patriotism greed and insensitivity to one another as Nigerians, but the problem that religion is causing is at par with corruption and tribalism. The type of passive religion practiced in Nigeria that believes that God will slove al the problems the nation is facing is killing the country and making the people lazy and complacent. . .Let me give you an example. . .Many Nigerian muslims pledge more allegiance to Saudi Arabia than to Nigeria as such when America invaded a muslim nation some years ago riots broke out in some northern parts of Nigeria and christians were killed by muslims and their properties looted and destroyed. . .

Okay. I would be in a better position to critique what is said once I watch the video. However, I would address the emboldened statement. A more accurate statement to make is this: Religious fanaticism is what is destroying the country. I am ad arguendo ignoring the fact that there are other factors. But to make the claim that religion destroys the country is flawed in 2 ways:

i) It is based on a misunderstanding on the concept of religion which is not solely reducible to a belief in deities or sacred texts. Religion is much broader than that.

ii) It fails to properly make what is being meant. Certainly, Akintoba can't say Taoism, Buddhism or FSM is destroying the country, and yet, these are religions aren't they. To correct such, I presented a better way of articulating his point. Atheists are certainly not the only ones who reason.
Sure, a lot of the greatest minds in the world today and in the past are religious people. . .You can never see me making the argument that atheist are more intelligent than religious people. Now to the point about fanaticism, the average Nigerian christian or muslim is a fanatic. . .The average Nigerian christian sees the muslims as a joke tha does not deserve any kind of legetimacy or someone that deserves to be mocked or ridiculed for his/her beliefs. . .The average Nigerian muslims see the christians as some one that is lost accursed and deserves to die and suffer for belonging to the wrong religion. . . .Only a person that is living in denial will deny this fact. . . .
Christianity Etc › Re: Looking For Atheists In Nigeria? Here's One. by mazaje(m): 8:36pm On Feb 12, 2012
Uyi Iredia:
How is Christianity directly related to poverty in Nigeria ? Are you willing to attribute the wealth of UAE, Kuwait & Israel to religion ? I ask these questions because it appears a double standard applies: ignore contexts where religion exists in a generally comfortable society and naively attribute evils to religion.
Let me tell you how. . . .The kind of passive christianity that is practiced in Nigeria that always encourage prayers and superstitious magic instead of hard work, commitment, dedication and patriotism as the only way out of the mess the country finds it self in is greatly responsible for the poverty that plagues the country,  about 80 percent of church goers in the country are poor, when the go to church they are NEVER encouraged to reason, think, work hard, and strive to solve all their problems themselves collectively as humans, instead they are told to pray for peace, blessings and wealth, pray for cure for sickness and diseases etc. . . .The mentality of prayers as a solution to all problems breeds laziness and complacency. . .That exactly is what is happening in Nigeria. Many people are just to complacent, they feel they have God and with the type of christianity practiced in Nigeria that encourages them to have faith instead of reason the country and the people suffer. . .Money that is supposed to be used to start up personal businesses are given to pastors as offerings, first fruits, tithes etc. . .

Instead of people fighting for their rights from the very corrupt and insensitive political elites people are encouraged to be passive and told to pray for the country and commit their leaders into the hands of God to touch them and change them. . .That has not worked and will NEVER work. . .As long as this type of passive christianity continues, it will continue to drag the nation behind. . . .Every thing that Nigerians need to do MUST be done by NIgerians themselves, NO God can ever bring peace to NIgeria, NO God can ever make Nigeria great, Nigerians will have to do that themselves. . . .A lot of Nigerian christains believe that prayers is what will bring peace and development to the nation because of the type of passive chriatianity that is practiced there. . . .

I'll give one thing that segregates even more than religion: Tribalism. Have you also considered that atheism also breaks possible relationships. I have witnessed and can cite on request a thread in RD.Net where atheists did show a bias in which marital partners they could choose. Be careful that you do not say in a society in which only atheism pervades such won't be the case. It would be wrong on 2 counts: i) other factors such as race and economic class also cause divisions ii) the case could be equally be made that if a belief system e.g Bahai Faith were likewise dominant such rifts along religious lines could cease.
Sure, tribalism is a great problem in Nigeria. . .But religion is also destroying the country on the same level as tribalism if not more. . . Many Nigerians can not tolerate the fact that some people belong to another religion, many feel their religions are superior and all others completely lack legitimacy, after all the bible says that whoever that does not believe in its stories and creed is condemned already, many christians look at non christians as condemned people and treat them as such because their word of God says so. . .The koran states that Allah does not like the unbelievers and many muslims are happy to treat non muslims as the enemies of Allah because the koran says so. . .

tbaba1234:
The evidences are coming, just keep reading.
Evidences or question begging?

The cause or creator for the universe must be one for several reasons.  I will present the following 2 arguments:

1. Logic necessitates that if there were more than one God who created the universe it would be in chaos and there would not be the level of order we find in the cosmos. This is because God by definition is the being that has an unlimited imposing will, if there were two or more Gods that would mean that they would have a competition of wills and that would result in chaos and disorder. However you may argue that they can agree to have the same will or each have their own domain, but that would mean that their wills are now limited and passive, which would mean they are not Gods anymore by definition!
Absolutely false. . . . .You only made the claimed but have failed to show how true this statement is and you have also failed to provide any evidence for this claim. . . .You gave an example using a car, but we know that cars are made by many different people, many people come together to create a car and a car is not in chaos. . .there is order and arrangement in a car. . . .If we are to go by your analogy of the car as something that that can not come into existence by it self but requires many creators, then the same can be said of the universe. . .how does the coming to together of many entities to create the universe make their wills limited?. . .What if they decided to create it as a game or something of entertainment for themselves? You are yet to provide any evidence for your assertion a simple loaded assertion without evidence will NOT suffice. . .Remember you are the one making the claim so you MUST come up with evidence. . . .Many religions the world over have no problem believing in a pantheon of Gods and to them their wills are NOT limited and passive and they still remain Gods to them. .  .A God like yours that requires human worship and praise also mean that his will is limited and hence can not be God by definition, no?. . .

2. The cause of the universe must be unique, as the Qur’an says “There is nothing like Him”. If the cause of the universe was not unique that would mean there are some similarities between the cause of the universe and the universe itself. How does this relate to the oneness of God? Well if there were more than one cause for the universe that would mean they are not unique anymore.
Him?. . .Evidence that the force behind the universe is a male entity is WHAT?. . . .AGAIN You have not shown that there is only one cause to the existence of the universe you only made the claim of of thin air in order to agree with the traditions posed by ancient men who thought the mountains were made to peg down the earth and stop it from convulsing. . . .Many entities different from the universe could come up and create the universe and still remain completely unique to the universe. . .

Whole load of HOGWASH!. . . . . .

tbaba1234:
This is why the issue of scriptural authenticity is important. The problem with Zoroastrianism is that there is nothing really left of the actual writings and sayings of Zoroaster. The liturgy remains, and some ideas of the basic theology, but his actual words are more or less lost. The problems with Biblical authenticity are
well known even to honest Christian and Jewish scholars. Here is an area where the Quran, the main scripture of Islam, is really outstanding. There is very little controversy over the authenticity of the Quranic text. In fact, one could pick up a copy of the Quran from any mosque anywhere in the world, and one could
compare these with manuscripts dating to within thirty years after the death of the Prophet Mohammed and you would find the text unchanged except for the style of writing and certain marks placed to aid pronunciation. This is quite remarkable for a text just over 1400 years old. Not only is there an excellent record of written preservation, but the Quran has a remarkable history of oral preservation as well. Muslims claim other scriptures have been changed, lost and distorted in various ways, but the Creator (whose word the Quran is) has promised to preserve the Quran because it is the last revelation from the Creator for humanity and thus Mohammed is the final messenger. Although Muslims themselves are human and fallible, and as such do not necessarily represent the true face of the religion, the Quran, and example and teachings of the Prophet remain intact for people to be able to find out what the God's guidance really is.
This where the fallacy all begins, every other religion and its scriptures are false, only islam and its scriptures are true. . .Pls tell me how do YOU know that the authors of the koran were NOT lying?. . .What credible evidence do you have to show that every thing that they wrote or claimed are true? What HISTORICAL EVIDENCE and SOURCES do you have to show outside the koran that all the prophets of the koran existed in reality?. . .I have seen people like davidylan completely destroy your superficial arguments most of the time and laugh. . . . .

PLEASE what evidence do you have to show that the entity behind the universe assuming such an entity exist is a single entity and speaks Arabic?. . .WHERE is your evidence for this ridiculous assertion?. . . . .

Ok, then you are not worth my time responding to, go watch the video in totality, then you would clearly understand what he was talking about. I think you only succeeded in proving yourself a wanabe atheist, one who does not want to read, nor want to hear only interested in making jest! unless i am wrong.
You are wrong, I really wanted to watch the video and I know very well that religion like every other thing has its good and bad sides. . I was completely uninterested when I noticed that his very first point was very false. He falsely stated that religion brought clothing to the people of Ireland and northern europe. Once I heard that I stopped watching, but will watch it now since am free. . .

lol @ Mazaje.

As much as I would not like this to be a us vs them (athiest vs theist), I realised you did conform to my call anyway by stating indoctrination as a result of the lady's action.

However, please permit me to dis-agree a bit. I say a bit because I do agree indoctrination might have had  a bigger effect relating to her action but I am tempted to say that a non-indoctrinated person might have done the same as well. Putting into thought that this person may possess the same level of stupidity and yet not be indoctrinated in any belief system.

To make it more simple, stupidity knows no race, religion or creed. It is simple a phenomenom and anybody, religious or not, can still possess the ability to be silly. I hope you get my drift.
Sure, I agree with your position, but i still believe that it is much easier for a person that is indoctrinated to perform stupid acts than a person that hasn't been indoctrinated. . . .

It is more gladdening that you could not refute the numerous point he rose, the real substance of his point, rather you stay here laughing at your total ineptitude to refute brilliant points he raised. He said " £9000 for a degree was brought by secular ideology not religion, religion gave free education
He did not make ANY reasonable point, I just listened to the first point about dressing and stopped the video. . . .What education has islam brought to man kind?. . .How has the education that islam brought helped humanity in any way?. . . Electricity, computers, cars, airplanes, modern medicine, anthropology just to mention a few are all a result of secular education and have helped humanity tremendously, PLEASE state ONE product of islamic education that can match any of these. . . .Islam gave free education and how has the free education that islam gave benefited humanity?. . . .

.   .   ." these are real hard facts that all man enjoyed were clearly fostered and started by religion, Honesty is indeed asking to much from people these days. Religion
Electricity, modern medicine, democracy, cars, sports, movies, alcohol etc where all started by which religion?. . .Which of these started with Islam?. . . . . grin

- Islam literally brought knowledge to mankind, not atheism which has not brought what is desired.
Which knowledge has islam brought to mankind, and how is it that many men have survived and prospered without any knowledge of islam and the alleged education it brought?. . . .Which knowledge has islam brought to mankind that can be equated to say mathematics or biology?. . .

Till date you could harldy bringing any tangible points to the table with regards to state atheism etc. in the thread  https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-723007.64.html#msg8852025
I have never advocated for state atheism neither have  I ever stated that atheism has brought knowledge to humanity, you on the other hand have stated that your own brand of religion called islam has brought knowledge to humanity , lets see how you defend this outlandish and ridiculous claim. .  .
