Christianity Etc › Re: Prayer For President Musa Yaradua Of Nigeria by mazaje(m): 10:47pm On Nov 29, 2009
Marlbron:
Skyone,

Tudor and Mazj have a valid point. The Bible instructs Christians not to take drugs but to submit for prayer. That is the standard. If for some reason you do not meet this, then you have not started your journey to Christianity. You are a paper christian. That is, a Christian without the Holy Spirit, or an empty Christian. Can the holy spirit dwell in an impure house? Drugs dirty the abode of the holy spirit.  Paul was afflicted with a disease or a long time, but instead prayed to God.

Tudor, Mazj

There are Christians that would rather die than take drugs, they rely completely on God. I gues there are non-christians that would not take drugs too!
Many have tried the prayer path and ended up DEAD or their medical condition got worse. . . .Here is a story of a girl whose parents relied on payers instead of seeking medical help for their daughter and she ended up dead. . . . Untreated diabetes kills girl and the parents choose prayer instead of medical care

Olabowale,

Muslims also go for prayers from Christians, even your imans. Whats the big deal?
This is FALSE. . .If you have any credible example pls bring it on. . . .

@m_nwankwo Thanks so much for your reply, Very very interesting I must say. . . .

I will just point to some parts of your post where there seems to be some disagreements amongst scientist with regards to your postulations because I personally do not agree with them too(I might be wrong though). . . . .
A flat EEG in lay terms means that there is no recordable brain activity. If consciousness is tied to the brain, it means that one who has no brain activity either due to brain death, or medically induced coma will not be counscious and thus will not be able to report what happened during the time of no recordable brain activity, that is flat EEG.If however a person or patient with flat EEG is able to report scientifically verifiable incident during the time he shows no recordable brain activity, then that strongly questions the hypothesis that consciousness lies in the brain
This wikipedia article on Brain Death has some quite telling phrases.

"Note that brain electrical activity can stop completely, or drop to such a low level as to be undetectable with most equipment. This includes a flat EEG during deep anaesthesia or cardiac arrest. To preclude these states being defined as brain death, the term refers only to the permanent cessation of electrical activity."

The articles suggests that there seems to be some brain activity even when there is a Flat EEG but the activity is too low and most equipment are unable to detect them because to my understanding a flat EEG does not mean that the brain cells are dead right? Cesation of brain activity is only death in so far as it is permanent. Just like cesation of heart beat is only death in so far as it is permanent to my understanding. . . . .

With regards to NDE here is an interesting read from this website. . . .

"Near-death" experiences appear to result from a stressed brain--such as anoxia [Lack of oxygen--Ed.] in a cardia arrest. Clincally, the person fails rapidly and during probably the recovery, the stressed brain essentially makes things up. It cannot process stimuli properly.

How do we know this? We can recreate the conditions. The brain will make up things to fill gaps--confabulate in a sense. A person coming out of a stress will confabulate--and the events seem very real. "But wait, the guy said he was floating above the stretcher and heard exactly what the doctors, nurses, priests, and undertakers were saying!" Well, have you ever had a third person dream? You watch yourself? The brain can do that. Also, as you "come to" you process information not at all well. You can remember some parts, not others, and, frankly, make up details. The popular stories of "near death"--like "alien abductions"--provide you a frame work on which to attach events to create the story. Finally, just as a dream can distort the period of time you think has passed, the same can occur in the "near death" experience.

What you have been doing is stretch truth, evade particular references, and go limp in the face of issues that question your obdurate assertions feigned as the interpretation of those verses of Scripture. I had a good laugh at the one where you tried to use the shed blood of Abel to establish the age of the cosmos! grin That was classic! Is there any wonder then that you really have no clue what you're arguing as regards the age of the universe?
Hi Tudor,

I mean if winiret will change his present views on consciousness if he finds compelling scientific evidence where a person reports an out of body experience when his or her brain shows no brain activity as determined by an EEG machine or other equipments used to monitor brain activity. That means that the out of body experience happened during the time the person or patient shows no demonstable brain activity. This wiki article may be helpful.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electroencephalography

Best wishes
Most of these claims are subjective but out of body experience have been debunked according to this article from the BBC website. . . .

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6960612.stm (very interesting read I must say)

This article explains how they've recreated these experiences and empirically tested them . . . . . .So basically if a person is having a near-death experience he/she is not "seeing the other side". The person's brain is just being fried (you are a biologist so I know you posses greater knowledge of all these things better than me.)

Most situations like this can be attributed to neurological, psychological or even chemical events according to your peers . It's not evidence for a soul or that there is another part of the body that is responsible to consciousness as you seem to suggest in one of your replies to wirinet  at all. It's just that our bodies (and brains) aren't nearly as fine-tuned as a lot of people seem to believe IMO. . . .
@Wirinet,

You may wish to consider some scientific investigation on near death experience. The wikepedia article below  will be a good guide. Follow up the articles cited as references to this wiki article especially reference 64.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near-death_experience

Find below a peer reviewed article on Near Death Experience in survivors of cardiac arrest. The article is published in a leading medial journal LANCET. The link  to the pdf of the article is shown below:

Finally, if you find scientific evidence of out of body experience in patients or individauls with flat EEG, will that change your view that consciousness is tied to the brain/nervous system? Best wishes.
I will like you to explain the highlighted part of your post pls. . . .Here is what I got from a site that I frequent about the NDE. . . .

1. Death is not a clear line; on one side alive, on the other completely dead.

Death happens in stages as individual cells no longer retain integrity for a variety of reasons, often because of oxygen starvation from organ failure or trauma that prevents the blood from circulating.  Parts of us are dying and new cells are being made all the time.

2. Organ transplants.  Even when 'we' cease to be, parts of us are still coherent, allowing organ transplants.  There is even a method of blood extraction from corpses that is used occasionally.

3. All of our thoughts while we are alive are contained in a structure of neurons.  This can be seen in a variety of well documented cases from Phineas Gage through to the impacts of severing the corpus colosum and the impacts of traumas such as strokes and alzheimers as well as the structures found that map nerves to a variety of tasks and thoughts.

4. When people start to die, the brain is frequently one of the last organs to be starved of oxygen.

5. The 'tunnel of light' is caused by the visual cortex losing oxygen and the remaining parts of the brain attempting to deal with that.  The same 'tunnel' can be simulated.  Pilots experience this when they use a centrifuge under high G forces for training or to test new gear.  Both these are documented and can be duplicated with the proper equipment and/or circumstances.

6. People who live after being through this oxygen starvation tell stories based on their brain's attempt to deal with the stress.  They talk about 'flash backs', they talk about 'stepping outside' of themselves and seeing themselves.  The same thing the pilots in the centrifuges report.

7. The more time the brain or any organ is starved, the more damage.

8. People don't act any differently from more damage (that brings them closer to complete death and thus an 'afterlife') then other victims of brain damage.

9. When people 'come back' from 'the dead' their bodies have not suffered complete cell death; they weren't completely dead.

10. When cell death is complete, there is no place for 'us' to stand; there is no way to 'see the other side' and return to talk about it.

11. Think back to #3.  Now, with that in mind, where do 'we' go if our brains suffer a stroke or other damage?  Are there surpluses of souls hanging around, waiting for brain damage before they can be inserted into a live body?

More lies from the religionist just to strengthen his ridiculous beliefs and make him sleep at night while accepting LIES that have NO basis in reality. . . .The knowledge of science comes through extensive and painstaking research no because some imaginary god that exist only in people's imaginations "permits" anything through science. . .The whole notion is very funny because science has to work so painstakingly to uncover medical cures and other things that help mankind as a whole, . . . Yet once we have the discoveries available they get embraced by theists as some kind of god-given good, and get deployed in theist-run hospitals and charities organizations as if they are their god's work. Theist consumers of modern medicine often call their treatments miracles even when the causes of their cures are completely explained by the application of medical science. Do Christians truly believe in the bible and what it teaches? Why then are they spending billions in hospitals and in pharmacies?By the way why would god make it so hard to discover ways to help sick people and save lives if the knowledge of science is permitted by your god as you falsely and ridiculously claimed?? . . . . . . Why will medical science be better in the future than it is now?

Does it matter anything to you who wrote the Bible?  Will it make any difference to you if I say that the Creator God inscribed the decalogue in tables of stone as a witness of His signature?  This is part of what He wrote with His own Finger "For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it."  Would that make any sense to you since you have made up your mind to swallow the lies and assumption of fallible man's philosophy as your own source of authority?
Where you there when any god was using his finger to write on a piece of stone or do you just blindly accept the stories that were written by other men WITHOUT ANY EVIDENCE AT ALL?. . .By the way WHERE IS THE STONE?. . . Where is the stone that yahweh used his finger to write on?. . .Is it not the same man that wrote EVERYTHING in the bible? When you have any evidence for any god writing anything or inspiring any body to write down anything then I will begin to accept that you are sane with all these ridiculous and very pitiful assertions of yours. . . .

God does not need to appear to me personally for me to believe and have faith in His Word.  If I had been alive 2.000 years ago and living in Israel I would have seen God personally as He walked the face of this earth in the Person of Jesus Christ.  But thanks be to God that there is more blessing in believing His infallible Words than if I had seen Him then and not believed.  Believing is seeing and not the other way round.  Taste and see that the Lord is good.
Again, god created the entire world and the only place he can come and let people know about him is a little obscured place in the middle east eh?. . .I have news for you, if you were living in Arabia in the 6th centuary AD you would have seen allah's last prophet in person. . . . Christianity Etc › Re: Where Was God During The Rwandan Genocide ? by mazaje(m): 3:23pm On Nov 26, 2009
Deep Sight:
May I step in here.

In this post, I will abandon every attempt to reason, as there has been an abundance of reasoning already, and this has not served to communicate any understanding to those who are yearning for it, in questioning the presence and purposes of GOD.

In this post: I will merely communicate what I believe the truth is, because I perceive that at a point we must per force tire of endless arguments, which in themselves only betray our desperate thirst for the truth.

So I will set it forth: it is neither an argument nor do I invite any arguments in response to it – it is simply that which I believe some here may need to know and understand in order to rest their questions.

Almighty God is a very remote being: the primordial and original meaning of pure existence which we can never approach or comprehend. God simply is the compound of all self-existing laws, and those laws determine what occurs in reality, good, or bad.

So remote and distant from us is GOD, that it may even be said that he did not directly construct this material universe. Rays of energy flowing from him, and immersed already in pre-existing non-material realms coalesced to form this material realm.

We humans who populate this realm are accordingly very remote from the pure perfection of God – thus we are not perfect beings, but developing beings. Everything around you attests to this fact: the fact that we are developing still, learning still, growing still every moment in every way.

We are actually spirit-germs that used to be little sparks of light emanating from the energy of the ultimate oneness – God. Each spark contained within itself either sufficient energy to emanate a desire for consciousness or not.

That bubbling desire within each spark drives the spark down towards the world of matter, where it can become conscious and experience existence and thereby grow into a mature and conscious being. Thus no person should say that he did not ask to be created – deep truth is that before our birth, we each, as spirit-sparks, did bear a desire to come into the world.

Thus once you understand that your advent in the world is for the purpose of spiritual growth and consciousness, you will see that it is actually absolutely necessary that each being must go through all manner of experiences, both good and evil, in its journey towards becoming a strong, complete, and rounded conscious spirit being. That is why we are in a place such as this, where good and evil thrive, and this place is called the world.

In the world, every manner of thing will occur, and the underlying purpose of these things is a drive towards growth. You will all agree that bad experiences will make any wild creature more vigilant, stronger, wiser, etc. Indeed, as the saying goes – experience is the best teacher.

Now as many ancient cultures and religions have sensed, man does not become fully developed in one lifetime. He proceeds through a succession of many lifetimes, until he captures a state that mirrors the perfection of God, from whom his original but unconscious spark proceeded. In Buddhist cultures that state is called Nirvana, without reference to God, and in Christian or Islamic Cultures that state is called heaven, or paradise – because it is the state of perfection, which is what our spiritual experience in the world is driving towards.

Any body who reflects closely on the fact that he was not always in this world, but entered at a point in time, and will die at a point in time, must realise clearly that he or she is coming from somewhere and is going somewhere. It is really very simple indeed.

For this reason one must realize that even children who are caught in a conflict, and suffer therein, have a spiritual location and purpose therein, and they proceed out of the world perhaps in violence to the next realm and the next level of their experiencing in growing gradually towards Nirvana, or perfection. In this regard, man has always realized in various cultures and religions that the effects of that thing called Karma, also have a role to play. Jesus captured the teaching of Karma, when he stated – “whatsoever a man sows, the same shall he reap.” Now the effects of the threads of Karma stretch beyond each lifetime, and determine to a good extent the next life. For this reason, no human being can ever state with any degree of accuracy that he understands any event, be it war or a natural disaster, or the compound effects of such events, and how such events figure in the grand scheme of mankind’s spiritual growth. This is why the OP of this thread has got it horribly wrong.

God, being the compound of all self-existing laws, does not intervene in anything to create “good” situations or “evil” situations. Our adjustment and individual actions in the world create those situations based on the self existing laws, such as gravity - and spiritual gravity.

As I said before, this is not an argument, and I will not be defending it in argumentative terms. But I feel it will be helpful for Mr. Atheists and Tudor to try to understand these realities.

Over and out.
Will you allow your god to come and speak to people himself? All these people that go around lying to themselves and others pretending to know what their variuous gods needs, wants and even thinks are PURELY DELUDED. . .Deeepsight I really agree with Davidylan when he says you are confused. . .you are the most confused person here on the NL religion section. . . When christianity fits your delusion you run to it accepting it and its dogma. . .when Buddaism rocks you boat you spew its dogman about karma and other things it talks about. . .your own delusion is to go around stealing people's ideas and placing it into your own non existent god. . .a god whom you have failed to define. . .keep on deluding yourself. . .

Your ignorance again is even getting more dreadful, listen your foundation is inadequate to grasp the validity and power of prayer, so stop wandering of how prayer could heal the sick.
What exactly is the validity and power of prayer? Nigeria is the most PRAYERFUL country I know(And I have been to quite a lot of countries) yet it has one of the lowest life expectancy(as a result of sickness and premature death) of all the countries I have visited. . .So what exactly is the validity of prayers you are talking about? You should expect Nigerians to be less sick or suffer less from sickness than people living in finland, sweden, denmark, norway, belgium, japan, greece etc. . . but that is not the case. . . the sick people in Nigeria suffer more despite all their prayers. . . .go to the government hospitals here in helsinki they are mostly empty. . .go visit a government hospital in lagos you will see people receiving medication on wheel chairs. . . .If prayers work for anything you should expect Nigerians to recover the fastest from their sicknesses or not to fall sick at all since they are the most prayerful bunch I know. . . .By the way how does prayer heal the sick? I have had 2 personal relatives of mine who relied on prayers and ended up DEAD because they could not afford to travel abroad and seek better medical treatment. . . so they relied on prayer since that was the only option left and it FAILED. . .

Did any god appear to you and tell you personally that yar'adua is doomed or on the wrong side of salvation?. . .Yar'a dua knows VERY well that prayer is USELESS that is why he is presently in Saudi Arabia seeeking medical help from the hands of competent doctors instead of wishing and relying on prayers that have no importance and have NEVER sloved any problem at all. . . .If prayers work for anything those that believe in the myth will not be spening time and money in hospitals. . .why go to hospital and take medication when you can pray and be magically healed? huh huh. . . deluded people. . . .
Its a valid answer nontheless. Howbout this for a corollary. . . . Christians rave on about God being responsible for all good things but in times of wars, natural disasters and plagues they rant about"free will". . .how sad is that?
This ridiculous free will argument is pointless. .  .does a 3 year old that was inflicted with lukemia excercise the use of his/her free will? What about a baby born with a weak heart that fails?. . . .are these afflictions that millions of innocent children face all over the world all a result of their "free will"? huh huh

What is all these talk about god not being responsible for evil? The bible clearly says that the biblegod is responsible for all the evil that happens around. . . .

Amos 3:6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?

I do not believe that any god of man made religion is responsible for any evil we see around(Humans are responsible for all the evil we see around) but the bible god clearly admits that he is responsible for all the evil we see around from the above passage. . . . .
